Unimodality of ranks and a proof of Stanton's conjecture

Recently, much attention has been given to various inequalities among partition functions. For example, Nicolas, {and later DeSavlvo--Pak,} proved that $p(n)$ is eventually log-concave, and Ji--Zang showed that the cranks are eventually unimodal. This has led to a flurry of recent activity generalizing such results in different directions. At the same time, Stanton recently made deep conjectures on the positivity of certain polynomials associated to ranks and cranks of partitions, with the ultimate goal of pointing the way to ``deeper'' structure refining ranks and cranks. These have been shown to be robust in recent works, which have identified further infinite families of such conjectures in the case of colored partitions. In this paper, we employ the Circle Method to prove unimodality for ranks. As a corollary, we prove Stanton's original conjecture. This points to future study of the positive, integral coefficients Stanton conjectured to exist, hinting at new combinatorial structure yet to be uncovered.

Turán inequalities for the plane partition function

Heim, Neuhauser, and Tröger recently established some inequalities for MacMahon's plane partition function $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ that generalize known results for Euler's partition function $p(n)$. They also conjectured that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ is log-concave for all $n\geq 12.$ We prove this conjecture. Moreover, for every $d\geq 1$, we prove their speculation that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ satisfies the degree $d$ Turán inequality for sufficiently large $n$. The case where $d=2$ is the case of log-concavity.

Limiting Betti distributions of Hilbert schemes on $n$ points

Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas recently observed that work of Göttsche, combined with a classical result of Erdős and Lehner on integer partitions, implies that the limiting Betti distribution for the Hilbert schemes $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]}$ on $n$ points, as $n\rightarrow +\infty,$ is a \textit{Gumbel distribution}. In view of this example, they ask for further such Betti distributions. We answer this question for the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes $((\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]})^{T_{α,β}}$ that are cut out by torus actions. We prove that their limiting distributions are also of Gumbel type. To obtain this result, we combine work of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima on these Hilbert schemes with our generalization of the result of Erdős and Lehner, which gives the distribution of the number of parts in partitions that are multiples of a fixed integer $A\geq 2.$ Furthermore, if $p_k(A;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts that are multiples of $A$, then we obtain the asymptotic $$ p_k(A,n)\sim \frac{24^{\frac k2-\frac14}(n-Ak)^{\frac k2-\frac34}}{\sqrt2\left(1-\frac1A\right)^{\frac k2-\frac14}k!A^{k+\frac12}(2π)^k}e^{2π\sqrt{\frac1{6}\left(1-\frac1A\right)(n-Ak)}}, $$ a result which is of independent interest.

Generalized Frobenius partitions, Motzkin paths, and Jacobi forms

We show how Andrews' generating functions for generalized Frobenius partitions can be understood within the theory of Eichler and Zagier as specific coefficients of certain Jacobi forms. This reformulation leads to a recursive process which yields explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions in terms of infinite $q$-products. In particular, we show that specific examples of our result easily reestablish previously known formulas, and we describe new congruences, both conjectural and proven, in additional cases. The modular structure of Jacobi forms indicates that \emph{all} of the coefficients of the forms are of interest. We give a combinatorial definition of these "companion series" and explore their combinatorics via the counting of Motzkin paths.

Infinite families of crank functions, Stanton-type conjectures, and unimodality

Dyson's rank function and the Andrews--Garvan crank function famously give combinatorial witnesses for Ramanujan's partition function congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11. While these functions can be used to show that the corresponding sets of partitions split into 5, 7, or 11 equally sized sets, one may ask how to make the resulting bijections between partitions organized by rank or crank combinatorially explicit. Stanton recently made conjectures which aim to uncover a deeper combinatorial structure along these lines, where it turns out that minor modifications of the rank and crank are required. Here, we prove two of these conjectures. We also provide abstract criteria for quotients of polynomials by certain cyclotomic polynomials to have non-negative coefficients based on unimodality and symmetry. Furthermore, we extend Stanton's conjecture to an infinite family of cranks. This suggests further applications to other combinatorial objects. We also discuss numerical evidence for our conjectures, connections with other analytic conjectures such as the distribution of partition ranks.

L-values of harmonic Maass forms

Bruinier, Funke, and Imamoglu have proved a formula for what can philosophically be called the "central $L$-value" of the modular $j$-invariant. Previously, this had been heuristically suggested by Zagier. Here, we interpret this "$L$-value" as the value of an actual $L$-series, and extend it to all integral arguments and to a large class of harmonic Maass forms which includes all weakly holomorphic cusp forms. The context and relation to previously defined $L$-series for weakly holomorphic and harmonic Maass forms are discussed. These formulas suggest possible arithmetic or geometric meaning of $L$-values in these situations. The key ingredient of the proof is to apply a recent theory of Lee, Raji, and the authors to describe harmonic Maass $L$-functions using test functions.

Polar harmonic Maaß forms and holomorphic projection

Recently, Mertens, Ono, and the third author studied mock modular analogues of Eisenstein series. Their coefficients are given by small divisor functions, and have shadows given by classical Shimura theta functions. Here, we construct a class of small divisor functions $σ^{\text{sm}}_{2,χ}$ and prove that these generate the holomorphic part of polar harmonic (weak) Maaß forms of weight $\frac{3}{2}$. To this end, we essentially compute the holomorphic projection of mixed harmonic Maaß forms in terms of Jacobi polynomials, but without assuming the structure of such forms. Instead, we impose translation invariance and suitable growth conditions on the Fourier coefficients. Specializing to a certain choice of characters, we obtain an identitiy between $σ^{\text{sm}}_{2,\ \text{Id}}$ and Hurwitz class numbers, and ask for more such identities. Moreover, we prove $p$-adic congruences of our small divisor functions when $p$ is an odd prime. If $χ$ is non-trivial we rewrite the generating function of $σ^{\text{sm}}_{2,χ}$ as a linear combination of Appell-Lerch sums and their first two normalized derivatives. Lastly, we offer a connection of our construction to meromorphic Jacobi forms of index $-1$ and false theta functions.

Higher depth mock theta functions and $q$-hypergeometric series

In the theory of harmonic Maass forms and mock modular forms, mock theta functions are distinguished examples which arose from $q$-hypergeometric examples of Ramanujan. Recently, there has been a body of work on higher depth mock modular forms. Here, we introduce distinguished examples of these forms which we call higher depth mock theta functions and develop $q$-hypergeometric expressions for them. We provide three examples of mock theta functions of depth two, each arising by multiplying a classical mock theta function with a certain specialization of a universal mock theta function. In addition, we give their modular completions, and relate each to a $q$-hypergeometric series.

Fractional partitions and conjectures of Chern-Fu-Tang and Heim-Neuhauser

Many papers have studied inequalities for partition functions. Recently, a number of papers have considered mixtures between additive and multiplicative behavior in such inequalities. In particular, Chern-Fu-Tang and Heim-Neuhauser gave conjectures on inequalities for coefficients of powers of the generating partition function. These conjectures were posed in the context of colored partitions and the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula. Here, we study the precise size of differences of products of two such coefficients. This allows us to prove the Chern-Fu-Tang conjecture and to show the Heim-Neuhauser conjecture in a certain range. The explicit error terms provided will also be useful in the future study of partition inequalities. These are laid out in a user-friendly way for the researcher in combinatorics interested in such analytic questions.

Jensen Polynomials for the Riemann Xi Function

We investigate Riemann's xi function $ξ(s):=\frac{1}{2}s(s-1)π^{-\frac{s}{2}}Γ(\frac{s}{2})ζ(s)$ (here $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta function). The Riemann Hypothesis (RH) asserts that if $ξ(s)=0$, then $\mathrm{Re}(s)=\frac{1}{2}$. Pólya proved that RH is equivalent to the hyperbolicity of the Jensen polynomials $J^{d,n}(X)$ constructed from certain Taylor coefficients of $ξ(s)$. For each $d\geq 1$, recent work proves that $J^{d,n}(X)$ is hyperbolic for sufficiently large $n$. Here we make this result effective. Moreover, we show how the low-lying zeros of the derivatives $ξ^{(n)}(s)$ influence the hyperbolicity of $J^{d,n}(X)$.

Mock modular Eisenstein series with Nebentypus

By the theory of Eisenstein series, generating functions of various divisor functions arise as modular forms. It is natural to ask whether further divisor functions arise systematically in the theory of mock modular forms. We establish, using the method of Zagier and Zwegers on holomorphic projection, that this is indeed the case for certain (twisted) "small divisors" summatory functions $σ_ψ^{\mathrm{sm}}(n)$. More precisely, in terms of the weight 2 quasimodular Eisenstein series $E_2(τ)$ and a generic Shimura theta function $θ_ψ(τ)$, we show that there is a constant $α_ψ$ for which $$ \mathcal{E}^{+}_ψ(τ):= α_ψ\cdot\frac{E_2(τ)}{θ_ψ(τ)}+ \frac{1}{θ_ψ(τ)} \sum_{n=1}^\infty σ^{\mathrm{sm}}_ψ(n)q^n $$ is a half integral weight (polar) mock modular form. These include generating functions for combinatorial objects such as the Andrews $spt$-function and the "consecutive parts" partition function. Finally, in analogy with Serre's result that the weight $2$ Eisenstein series is a $p$-adic modular form, we show that these forms possess canonical congruences with modular forms.

The Riemann Hypothesis for period polynomials of Hilbert modular forms

There have been a number of recent works on the theory of period polynomials and their zeros. In particular, zeros of period polynomials have been shown to satisfy a "Riemann Hypothesis" in both classical settings and for cohomological versions extending the classical setting to the case of higher derivatives of $L$-functions. There thus appears to be a general phenomenon behind these phenomena. In this paper, we explore further generalizations by defining a natural analogue for Hilbert modular forms. We then prove that similar Riemann Hypotheses hold in this situation as well.

Central $L$-values of elliptic curves and local polynomials

Here we study the recently introduced notion of a locally harmonic Maass form and its applications to the theory of $L$-functions. In particular, we find finite formulas for certain twisted central $L$-values of a family of elliptic curves in terms of finite sums over canonical binary quadratic forms. This yields vastly simpler formulas related to work of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for such $L$-values, and extends beyond their framework to special non-CM elliptic curves.

Pair correlation for Dedekind zeta functions of abelian extensions

Here we study problems related to the proportions of zeros, especially simple and distinct zeros on the critical line, of Dedekind zeta functions. We obtain new bounds on a counting function that measures the discrepancy of the zeta functions from having all zeros simple. In particular, for quadratic number fields, we deduce that more than 45% of the zeros are distinct. This extends work based on Montgomery's pair correlation approach for the Riemann zeta function. Our optimization problems can be interpreted as interpolants between the pair correlation bound for the Riemann zeta function and the Cohn-Elkies sphere packing bound in dimension 1. We compute the bounds through optimization over Schwartz functions using semidefinite programming and also show how semidefinite programming can be used to optimize over functions with bounded support.

From partitions to Hodge numbers of Hilbert Schemes of Surfaces

We celebrate the 100th anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan's election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, which was largely based on his work with G. H. Hardy on the asymptotic properties of the partition function. After recalling this revolutionary work, marking the birth of the "circle method", we present a contemporary example of its legacy in topology. We deduce the equidistribution of Hodge numbers for Hilbert schemes of suitable smooth projective surfaces.

Periodicities for Taylor coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms

Congruences of Fourier coefficients of modular forms have long been an object of central study. By comparison, the arithmetic of other expansions of modular forms, in particular Taylor expansions around points in the upper-half plane, has been much less studied. Recently, Romik made a conjecture about the periodicity of coefficients around $τ=i$ of the classical Jacobi theta function. Here, we prove this conjecture and generalize the phenomenon observed by Romik to a general class of modular forms of half-integral weight.

A note on Schwartz functions and modular forms

We generalize the recent work of Viazovska by constructing infinite families of Schwartz functions, suitable for Cohn-Elkies style linear programming bounds, using quasi-modular and modular forms. In particular for dimensions $d \equiv 0 \pmod{8}$ we give the constructions that lead to the best sphere packing upper bounds via modular forms. In dimension $8$ and $24$ these exactly match the functions constructed by Viazovska and Cohn, Kumar, Miller, Radchenko, and Viazovska which resolved the sphere packing problem in those dimensions.
