Static self-gravitating elastic bodies in Einstein gravity

We prove that given a stress-free elastic body there exists, for sufficiently small values of the gravitational constant, a unique static solution of the Einstein equations coupled to the equations of relativistic elasticity. The solution constructed is a small deformation of the relaxed configuration. This result yields the first proof of existence of static solutions of the Einstein equations without symmetries.

Rotating elastic bodies in Einstein gravity

We prove that, given a stress-free, axially symmetric elastic body, there exists, for sufficiently small values of the gravitational constant and of the angular frequency, a unique stationary axisymmetric solution to the Einstein equations coupled to the equations of relativistic elasticity with the body performing rigid rotations around the symmetry axis at the given angular frequency.

Apparent and average acceleration of the Universe

In this paper we consider the relation between the volume deceleration parameter obtained within the Buchert averaging scheme and the deceleration parameter derived from the supernova observation. This work was motivated by recent findings that showed that there are models which despite $Λ=0$ have volume deceleration parameter $q^{vol} < 0$. This opens the possibility that backreaction and averaging effects may be used as an interesting alternative explanation to the dark energy phenomenon. We have calculated $q^{vol}$ in some Lemaître--Tolman models. For those models which are chosen to be realistic and which fit the supernova data, we find that $q^{vol} > 0$, while those models which we have been able to find which exhibit $q^{vol} < 0$ turn out to be unrealistic. This indicates that care must be exercised in relating the deceleration parameter to observations.

Report on GRG18, Session A3, Mathematical Studies of the Field Equations

In this report I will give a summary of some of the main topics covered in Session A3, mathematical studies of the field equations, at GRG18, Sydney. Unfortunately, due to length constraints, some of the topics covered at the session will be very briefly mentioned or left out altogether. The summary is mainly based on extended abstracts submitted by the speakers and some of those who presented posters at the session. I would like to thank all participants for their contributions and help with this summary.

The area of horizons and the trapped region

This paper considers some fundamental questions concerning marginally trapped surfaces, or apparent horizons, in Cauchy data sets for the Einstein equation. An area estimate for outermost marginally trapped surfaces is proved. The proof makes use of an existence result for marginal surfaces, in the presence of barriers, curvature estimates, together with a novel surgery construction for marginal surfaces. These results are applied to characterize the boundary of the trapped region.

Stability of marginally outer trapped surfaces and existence of marginally outer trapped tubes

The present work extends our short communication Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 111102 (2005). For smooth marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTS) in a smooth spacetime we define stability with respect to variations along arbitrary vectors v normal to the MOTS. After giving some introductory material about linear non self-adjoint elliptic operators, we introduce the stability operator L_v and we characterize stable MOTS in terms of sign conditions on the principal eigenvalue of L_v. The main result shows that given a strictly stable MOTS S contained in one leaf of a given reference foliation in a spacetime, there is an open marginally outer trapped tube (MOTT), adapted to the reference foliation, which contains S. We give conditions under which the MOTT can be completed. Finally, we show that under standard energy conditions on the spacetime, the MOTT must be either locally achronal, spacelike or null.

Rigidity and Positivity of Mass for Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds

The Witten spinorial argument has been adapted in several works over the years to prove positivity of mass in the asymptotically AdS and asymptotically hyperbolic settings in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper we prove a scalar curvature rigidity result and a positive mass theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds that do not require a spin assumption. The positive mass theorem is reduced to the rigidity case by a deformation construction near the conformal boundary. The proof of the rigidity result is based on a study of minimizers of the BPS brane action.

Cosmological time versus CMC time II: the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter cases

This paper continues the investigation of constant mean curvature (CMC) time functions in maximal globally hyperbolic spatially compact spacetimes of constant sectional curvature, which was started in math.DG/0604486. In that paper, the case of flat spacetimes was considered, and in the present paper, the remaining cases of negative curvature (i.e. anti-de Sitter) spacetimes and postitive curvature (i.e. de Sitter) spacetimes is dealt with. As in the flat case, the existence of CMC time functions is obtained by using the level sets of the cosmological time function as barriers. A major part of the work consists of proving the required curvature estimates for these level sets. The nonzero curvature case presents significant new difficulties, in part due to the fact that the topological structure of nonzero constant curvature spacetimes is much richer than that of the flat spacetimes. Further, the timelike convergence condition fails for de Sitter spacetimes, and hence uniqueness for CMC hypersurfaces fails in general. We characterize those de Sitter spacetimes which admit CMC time functions (which are automatically unique), as well as those which admit CMC foliations but no CMC time function.

Curvature estimates for stable marginally trapped surfaces

We derive integral and sup-estimates for the curvature of stably marginally outer trapped surfaces in a sliced space-time. The estimates bound the shear of a marginally outer trapped surface in terms of the intrinsic and extrinsic curvature of a slice containing the surface. These estimates are well adapted to situations of physical insterest, such as dynamical horizons.

On the relation between mathematical and numerical relativity

The large scale binary black hole effort in numerical relativity has led to an increasing distinction between numerical and mathematical relativity. This note discusses this situation and gives some examples of succesful interactions between numerical and mathematical methods is general relativity.

Cosmological time versus CMC time I: Flat spacetimes

This paper gives a new proof that maximal, globally hyperbolic, flat spacetimes of dimension $n\geq 3$ with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces are globally foliated by Cauchy hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature, and that such spacetimes admit a globally defined constant mean curvature time function precisely when they are causally incomplete. The proof, which is based on using the level sets of the cosmological time function as barriers, is conceptually simple and will provide the basis for future work on constant mean curvature time functions in general constant curvature spacetimes, as well for an analysis of the asymptotics of constant mean foliations.

The global existence problem in general relativity

We survey some known facts and open questions concerning the global properties of 3+1 dimensional spacetimes containing a compact Cauchy surface. We consider spacetimes with an $\ell$-dimensional Lie algebra of space-like Killing fields. For each $\ell \leq 3$, we give some basic results and conjectures on global existence and cosmic censorship.

Eternal acceleration from M-theory

The dimensional reduction of $D$-dimensional spacetimes arising in string/M-theory, to the conformal Einstein frame, may give rise to cosmologies with accelerated expansion. Through a complete analysis of the dynamics of doubly warped product spacetimes, in terms of scale invariant variables, it is demonstrated that for $D \geq 10$, eternally accelerating 4-dimensional $κ= -1$ Friedmann cosmologies arise from dimensional reduction on an internal space with negative Einstein geometry.

Local existence of dynamical and trapping horizons

Given a spacelike foliation of a spacetime and a marginally outer trapped surface S on some initial leaf, we prove that under a suitable stability condition S is contained in a ``horizon'', i.e. a smooth 3-surface foliated by marginally outer trapped slices which lie in the leaves of the given foliation. We also show that under rather weak energy conditions this horizon must be either achronal or spacelike everywhere. Furthermore, we discuss the relation between ``bounding'' and ``stability'' properties of marginally outer trapped surfaces.

Asymptotic silence of generic cosmological singularities

In this letter we investigate the nature of generic cosmological singularities using the framework developed by Uggla et al. We do so by studying the past asymptotic dynamics of general vacuum G2 cosmologies, models that are expected to capture the singular behavior of generic cosmologies with no symmetries at all. In particular, our results indicate that asymptotic silence holds, i.e., that particle horizons along all timelines shrink to zero for generic solutions. Moreover, we provide evidence that spatial derivatives become dynamically insignificant along generic timelines, and that the evolution into the past along such timelines is governed by an asymptotic dynamical system which is associated with an invariant set -- the silent boundary. We also identify an attracting subset on the silent boundary that organizes the oscillatory dynamics of generic timelines in the singular regime. In addition, we discuss the dynamics associated with recurring spike formation.
