Phase transitions in the pseudogap Anderson and Kondo models: Critical dimensions, renormalization group, and local-moment criticality

The pseudogap Kondo problem, describing quantum impurities coupled to fermionic quasiparticles with a pseudogap density of states, rho(omega) ~ |omega|^r, shows a rich zero-temperature phase diagram, with different screened and free moment phases and associated transitions. We analyze both the particle-hole symmetric and asymmetric cases using renormalization group techniques. In the vicinity of r=0, which plays the role of a lower-critical dimension, an expansion in the Kondo coupling is appropriate. In contrast, r=1 is the upper-critical dimension in the absence of particle-hole symmetry, and here insight can be gained using an expansion in the hybridization strength of the Anderson model. As a by-product, we show that the particle-hole symmetric strong-coupling fixed point for r<1 is described by a resonant level model, and corresponds to an intermediate-coupling fixed point in the renormalization group language. Interestingly, the value r=1/2 plays the role of a second lower-critical dimension in the particle-hole symmetric case, and there we can make progress by a novel expansion performed around a resonant level model. The different expansions allow a complete description of all critical fixed points of the models and can be used to compute a variety of properties near criticality, describing universal local-moment fluctuations at these impurity quantum phase transitions.

Critical theories for the pseudogap Kondo problem

We discuss quantum phase transitions in the pseudogap Kondo problem, which describes a magnetic moment coupled to conduction electrons with a power-law density of states, rho(omega) ~ |omega|^r. We show that different perturbative expansions, together with renormalization group techniques, provide effective low-energy field theories for the relevant critical fixed points. In particular, we review expansions near the lower-critical and upper-critical dimensions of the problem, being r=0 and r=1, respectively.

Upper-critical dimension in a quantum impurity model: Critical theory of the asymmetric pseudogap Kondo problem

Impurity moments coupled to fermions with a pseudogap density of states display a quantum phase transition between a screened and a free moment phase upon variation of the Kondo coupling. We describe the universal theory of this transition for the experimentally relevant case of particle-hole asymmetry. The theory takes the form of a crossing between effective singlet and doublet levels, interacting with low-energy fermions. Depending on the pseudogap exponent, this interaction is either relevant or irrelevant under renormalization group transformations, establishing the existence of an upper-critical "dimension" in this impurity problem. Using perturbative renormalization group techniques we compute various critical properties and compare with numerical results.

Coulomb gap in one-dimensional disordered electronic systems

We study a one-dimensional system of spinless electrons in the presence of a long-range Coulomb interaction (LRCI) and a random chemical potential at each site. We first present a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) description of the system. We use the bosonization technique followed by the replica trick to average over the quenched randomness. An expression for the localization length of the system is then obtained using the renormalization group method and also a physical argument. We then find the density of states for different values of the energy; we get different expressions depending on whether the energy is larger than or smaller than the inverse of the localization length. We work in the limit of weak disorder where the localization length is very large; at that length scale, the LRCI has the effect of reducing the interaction parameter K of the TLL to a value much smaller than the noninteracting value of unity.
