Dirac geometry II: Coherent cohomology

Whatever it is that animates anima and breathes life into higher algebra, this something leaves its trace in the structure of a Dirac ring on the homotopy groups of a commutative algebra in spectra. In the prequel to this paper, we developed the commutative algebra of Dirac rings and defined the category of Dirac schemes. Here, we first embed this category in the larger infinity-category of Dirac stacks, which also contains formal Dirac schemes. We next develop the coherent cohomology of Dirac stacks, which amounts to a functor that to a Dirac stack X assigns a presentably symmetric monoidal stable infinity-category QCoh(X) of quasi-coherent sheaves together with a compatible t-structure. Finally, as applications of the general theory to stable homotopy theory, we use Quillen's theorem on complex cobordism and Milnor's theorem on the dual Steenrod algebra to identify the Dirac stacks corresponding to MU and F_p in terms of their functors of points. In the appendix, we develop a rudimentary theory of accessible presheaves of anima on coaccessible infinity-categories.

Dirac geometry I: Commutative algebra

The homotopy groups of a commutative algebra in spectra form a commutative algebra in the symmetric monoidal category of graded abelian groups. The grading and the Koszul sign rule are remnants of the structure encoded by anima as opposed to sets. The purpose of this paper and its sequel is to develop the geometry built from such algebras. We name this geometry Dirac geometry, since the grading exhibits the hallmarks of spin. Indeed, it is a reflection of the internal structure encoded by anima, and it distinguishes symmetric and anti-symmetric behavior, as does spin. Moreover, the coherent cohomology, which we develop in the sequel admits half-integer Serre twists.

Topological cyclic homology and the Fargues-Fontaine curve

The purpose of this expository paper is to explain how the Fargues-Fontaine curve and its decomposition into a punctured curve and the formal neighborhood of the puncture naturally arise from various forms of topological cyclic homology and maps between them.

Algebraic $K$-theory of planar cuspidal curves

In this paper, we evaluate the algebraic $K$-groups of a planar cuspidal curve over a perfect $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra relative to the cusp point. A conditional calculation of these groups was given earlier by Hesselholt, assuming a conjecture on the structure of certain polytopes. Our calculation here, however, is unconditional and illustrates the advantage of the new setup for topological cyclic homology by Nikolaus-Scholze, which is used throughout. The only input necessary for our calculation is the evaluation by the Buenos Aires Cyclic Homology group and by Larsen of the structure of Hochschild complex of the coordinate ring as a mixed complex, that is, as an object of the infinity category of chain complexes with circle action.

On the K-theory of division algebras over local fields

Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field with finite residue field of characteristic $p$, and let $D$ be a central division algebra over $K$ of finite index $d$. Thirty years ago, Suslin and Yufryakov showed that for all prime numbers $\ell$ different from $p$ and integers $j \geq 1$ , there exists a "reduced norm" isomorphism of $\ell$-adic $K$-groups $\operatorname{Nrd}_{D/K} \colon K_j(D,\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}) \to K_j(K,\mathbb{Z}_{\ell})$ such that $d \cdot \operatorname{Nrd}_{D/K}$ is equal to the norm homomorphism $N_{D/K}$. The purpose of this paper is to prove the analogous result for the $p$-adic $K$-groups. To do so, we employ the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology and show that there exists a "reduced trace" equivalence $\operatorname{Trd}_{A/S} \colon \operatorname{THH}(A\,|\,D,\mathbb{Z}_p) \to \operatorname{THH}(S\,|\,K,\mathbb{Z}_p)$ between two $p$-complete cyclotomic spectra associated with $D$ and $K$, respectively. Interestingly, we show that if $p$ divides $d$, then it is not possible to choose said equivalence such that, as maps of cyclotomic spectra, $d \cdot \operatorname{Trd}_{A/S}$ agrees with the trace $\operatorname{Tr}_{A/S}$, although this is possible as maps of spectra with $\mathbb{T}$-action.

Topological cyclic homology

This survey of topological cyclic homology is a chapter in the Handbook on Homotopy Theory. We give a brief introduction to topological cyclic homology and the cyclotomic trace map following Nikolaus-Scholze, followed by a proof of Bökstedt periodicity that closely resembles Bökstedt's original unpublished proof. We explain the extension of Bökstedt periodicity by Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze from perfect fields to perfectoid rings and use this to give a purely p-adic proof of Bott periodicity. Finally, we evaluate the cofiber of the assembly map in p-adic topological cyclic homology for the cyclic group of order p and a perfectoid ring of coefficients.

Topological Hochschild homology and the Hasse-Weil zeta function

We consider the Tate cohomology of the circle group acting on the topological Hochschild homology of schemes. We show that in the case of a scheme smooth and proper over a finite field, this cohomology theory naturally gives rise to the cohomological interpretation of the Hasse-Weil zeta function by regularized determinants envisioned by Deninger. In this case, the periodicity of the zeta function is reflected by the periodicity of said cohomology theory, whereas neither is periodic in general.

The big de Rham-Witt complex

This paper gives a new and direct construction of the multi-prime big de Rham-Witt complex which is defined for every commutative and unital ring; the original construction by the author and Madsen relied on the adjoint functor theorem and accordingly was very indirect. (The construction given here also corrects the 2-torsion which was not quite correct in the original version.) The new construction is based on the theory of modules and derivations over a lambda-ring which is developed first. The main result in this first part of the paper is that the universal derivation of a lambda-ring is given by the universal derivation of the underlying ring together with an additional structure depending on the lambda-ring structure in question. In the case of the ring of big Witt vectors, this additional structure gives rise to divided Frobenius operators on the module of Kähler differentials. It is the existence of these divided Frobenius operators that makes the new construction of the big de Rham-Witt complex possible. It is further shown that the big de Rham-Witt complex behaves well with respect to étale maps, and finally, the big de Rham-Witt complex of the ring of integers is explicitly evaluated. The latter complex may be interpreted as the complex of differentials along the leaves of a foliation of Spec Z.

On the K-theory of planar cuspical curves and a new family of polytopes

Let k be a regular F_p-algebra, let A = k[x,y]/(x^b - y^a) be the coordinate ring of a planar cuspical curve, and let I = (x,y) be the ideal that defines the cusp point. We give a formula for the relative K-groups K_q(A,I) in terms of the groups of de Rham-Witt forms of the ring k. At present, the validity of the formula depends on a conjecture that concerns the combinatorial structure of a new family of polytopes that we call stunted regular cyclic polytopes. The polytopes in question appear as the intersections of regular cyclic polytopes with (certain) linear subspaces. We verify low-dimensional cases of the conjecture. This leads to unconditional new results on K_2 and K_3 which extend earlier results by Krusemeyer for K_0 and K_1.

Topological Hochschild homology and the Bass trace conjecture

We use the methods of topological Hochschild homology to shed new light on the groups satisfying the Bass trace conjecture. We show that the factorization of the Hattori-Stallings rank map through the Bokstedt-Hsiang-Madsen cyclotomic trace map leads to Linnell's restriction on such groups. As a new consequence of this restriction, we show that the conjecture holds for any group G with the property that every subgroup that is isomorphic to the additive group of rational numbers has nontrivial and central image in some quotient of G.

On a conjecture of Vorst

We prove the following result. Let k be an infinite perfect field of positive characteristic and assume that strong resolution of singularities holds over k. Let R be a localization of a commutative d-dimensional k-algebra of finite type and suppose that R is K_{d+1}-regular. Then R is a regular ring.

On the vanishing of negative K-groups

Let k be an infinite perfect field of positive characteristic p and assume that strong resolution of singularities holds over k. We prove that, if X is a d-dimensional noetherian scheme whose underlying reduced scheme is essentially of finite type over the field k, then the negative K-group K_q(X) vanishes for every q < -d. This partially affirms a conjecture of Weibel.

On the K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras over the integers

We show that the K_{2i}(Z[x]/(x^m),(x)) is finite of order (mi)!(i!)^{m-2} and that K_{2i+1}(Z[x]/(x^m),(x)) is free abelian of rank m-1. This is accomplished by showing that the equivariant homotopy groups of the topological Hochschild spectrum THH(Z) are finite, in odd degrees, and free abelian, in even degrees, and by evaluating their orders and ranks, respectively.

On the relative and bi-relative K-theory of rings of finite characteristic

We prove that the relative K-groups associated with a nilpotent extension of Z/p^N Z-algebras and the bi-relative K-groups associated with a Milnor square of Z/p^N Z-algebras are p-primary torsion groups of bounded exponent. We also show that, in general, the cyclotomic trace map extends from Quillen K-theory to Bass completed non-connective algebraic K-theory.

On the Whitehead spectrum of the circle

The seminal work of Waldhausen, Farrell and Jones, Igusa, and Weiss and Williams shows that the homotopy groups in low degrees of the space of homeomorphisms of a closed Riemannian manifold of negative sectional curvature can be expressed as a functor of the fundamental group of the manifold. To determine this functor, however, it remains to determine the homotopy groups of the topological Whitehead spectrum of the circle. The cyclotomic trace of B okstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen and a theorem of Dundas, in turn, lead to an expression for these homotopy groups in terms of the equivariant homotopy groups of the homotopy fiber of the map from the topological Hochschild T-spectrum of the sphere spectrum to that of the ring of integers induced by the Hurewicz map. We evaluate the latter homotopy groups, and hence, the homotopy groups of the topological Whitehead spectrum of the circle in low degrees. The result extends earlier work by Anderson and Hsiang and by Igusa and complements recent work by Grunewald, Klein, and Macko.

The tower of K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras

Let A a regular F_p-algebra. The relative K-groups K_q(A[x]/(x^m),(x)) and the Nil-groups Nil_q(A[x]/(x^m)) were evaluated earlier by the author and Madsen in terms of the big de Rham-Witt groups of the ring A. In this paper, we evaluate the maps of relative K-groups and Nil-groups induced by the canonical projection from A[x]/(x^m) to A[x]/(x^n). The result depends strongly on the prime p. It generalizes work of Stienstra on the groups in degrees 2 and 3.

Bi-relative algebraic K-theory and topological cyclic homology

It is well-known that algebraic K-theory preserves products of rings. However, in general, algebraic K-theory does not preserve fiber-products of rings, and bi-relative algebraic K-theory measures the deviation. It was proved by Cortinas that, rationally, bi-relative algebraic K-theory and bi-relative cyclic homology agree. In this paper, we show that, with finite coefficients, bi-relative algebraic K-theory and bi-relative topological cyclic homology agree. As an application, we show that for a, possibly singular, curve over a perfect field of positive characteristic p, the cyclotomic trace map induces an isomorphism of the p-adic algebraic K-groups and the p-adic topological cyclic homology groups in non-negative degrees. As a further application, we show that the difference between the p-adic K-groups of the integral group ring of a finite group and the p-adic K-groups of a maximal Z-order in the rational group algebra can be expressed entirely in terms of topological cyclic homology.

On the K-theory of the coordinate axes in the plane

Let k be a regular F_p-algebra, let A = k[x,y]/(xy) be the coordinate ring of the coordinate axes in the affine k-plane, and let I = (x,y) be the ideal that defines the intersection point. We evaluate the relative K-groups K_q(A,I) in terms of the groups of big de Rham-Witt forms of the ring k. The result generalizes previous results for K_1 and K_2 by Dennis and Krusemeyer.
