Twisted scalar curvature as a moment map

We develop the moment map theory of the twisted scalar curvature of a Kähler metric. Primarily, we introduce a coupled system of equations on a holomorphic submersion intertwining the twisted scalar curvature of a Kähler metric on the base and the fibrewise scalar curvature of a relatively Kähler metric on the total space. This resulting system can be viewed as producing the natural coupled metric geometry of holomorphic submersions, and we show that this system appears canonically as a moment map. The approach generalises to foliations, where we prove similar results.

Analytic K-semistability and local wall-crossing

For a small polarised deformation of a constant scalar curvature Kähler manifold, under some cohomological vanishing conditions, we prove that K-polystability along nearby polarisations implies the existence of a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. In this setting, we reduce K-polystability to the computation of the classical Futaki invariant on the cscK degeneration. Our result holds on specific families and provides local wall-crossing phenomena for the moduli of cscK manifolds when the polarisation varies.

Extremal Kähler metrics on blowups

Consider a compact Kähler manifold which either admits an extremal Kähler metric, or is a small deformation of such a manifold. We show that the blowup of the manifold at a point admits an extremal Kähler metric in Kähler classes making the exceptional divisor sufficiently small if and only if it is relatively K-stable, as predicted by the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture. We also give a geometric interpretation of what relative K-stability means in this case in terms of finite dimensional geometric invariant theory. This gives a complete solution to a problem introduced and solved by Arezzo, Pacard, Singer and Székelyhidi for constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics in dimension at least three.

Constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics and semistable vector bundles

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the projectivisation of a slope semistable vector bundle to admit constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metrics in adiabatic classes, when the base admits a constant scalar curvature metric. More precisely, we introduce a stability condition on vector bundles, which we call adiabatic slope stability, which is a weaker version of K-stability and involves only test configurations arising from subsheaves of the bundle. We prove that, for a simple vector bundle with locally free graded object, adiabatic slope stability is equivalent to the existence of cscK metrics on the projectivisation, which solves a problem that has been open since work of Ross--Thomas. In particular, this shows that the existence of cscK metrics is equivalent to K-stability in this setting. We provide a numerical criterion for the Donaldson-Futaki invariant associated to said test configurations in terms of Chern classes of the vector bundle. This criterion is computable in practice and we present an explicit example satisfying our assumptions which is coming from a vector bundle that does not admit a Hermite-Einstein metric.

$Z$-critical connections and Bridgeland stability conditions

We associate geometric partial differential equations on holomorphic vector bundles to Bridgeland stability conditions. We call solutions to these equations $Z$-critical connections, with $Z$ a central charge. Deformed Hermitian Yang--Mills connections are a special case. We explain how our equations arise naturally through infinite dimensional moment maps. Our main result shows that in the large volume limit, a sufficiently smooth holomorphic vector bundle admits a $Z$-critical connection if and only if it is asymptotically $Z$-stable. Even for the deformed Hermitian Yang--Mills equation, this provides the first examples of solutions in higher rank.

Hermitian Yang-Mills connections on pullback bundles

We investigate hermitian Yang-Mills connections on pullback bundles with respect to adiabatic classes on the total space of holomorphic submersions with connected fibres. Under some technical assumptions on the graded object of a Jordan-Holder filtration, we obtain a necessary and sufficient criterion for when the pullback of a strictly semistable vector bundle will carry an hermitian Yang-Mills connection, in terms of intersection numbers on the base of the submersion. Together with the classical Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau correspondence, we deduce that the pullback of a stable (resp. unstable) bundle remains stable (resp. unstable) for adiabatic classes, and settle the semi-stable case.

On the Futaki invariant of Fano threefolds

We study the zero locus of the Futaki invariant on K-polystable Fano threefolds, seen as a map from the Kähler cone to the dual of the Lie algebra of the reduced automorphism group. We show that, apart from families 3.9, 3.13, 3.19, 3.20, 4.2, 4.4, 4.7 and 5.3 of the Iskovskikh-Mori-Mukai classification of Fano threefolds, the Futaki invariant of such manifolds vanishes identically on their Kähler cone. In all cases, when the Picard rank is greater or equal to two, we exhibit explicit 2-dimensional differentiable families of Kähler classes containing the anti-canonical class and on which the Futaki invariant is identically zero. As a corollary, we deduce the existence of non Kähler-Einstein cscK metrics on all such Fano threefolds.

Extremal metrics on the total space of destabilising test configurations

We construct extremal metrics on the total space of certain destabilising test configurations for strictly semistable Kähler manifolds. This produces infinitely many new examples of manifolds admitting extremal Kähler metrics. It also shows for such metrics a new phenomenon of jumping of the complex structure along fibres.

Uniqueness of optimal symplectic connections

Consider a holomorphic submersion between compact Kähler manifolds, such that each fibre admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. When the fibres admit continuous automorphisms, a choice of fibrewise constant scalar curvature Kähler metric is not unique. An optimal symplectic connection is choice of fibrewise constant scalar curvature Kähler metric satisfying a geometric partial differential equation. The condition generalises the Hermite-Einstein condition for a holomorphic vector bundle, through the induced fibrewise Fubini-Study metric on the associated projectivisation. We prove various foundational analytic results concerning optimal symplectic connections. Our main result proves that optimal symplectic connections are unique, up to the action of the automorphism group of the submersion, when they exist. Thus optimal symplectic connections are canonical relatively Kähler metrics when they exist. In addition, we show that the existence of an optimal symplectic connection forces the automorphism group of the submersion to be reductive, and that an optimal symplectic connection is automatically invariant under a maximal compact subgroup of this automorphism group. We also prove that when a submersion admits an optimal symplectic connection, it achieves the absolute minimum of a natural log norm functional which we define.

Moduli theory, stability of fibrations and optimal symplectic connections

K-polystability is, on the one hand, conjecturally equivalent to the existence of certain canonical Kähler metrics on polarised varieties, and, on the other hand, conjecturally gives the correct notion to form moduli. We introduce a notion of stability for families of K-polystable varieties, extending the classical notion of slope stability of a bundle, viewed as a family of K-polystable varieties via the associated projectivisation. We conjecture that this is the correct condition for forming moduli of fibrations. Our main result relates this stability condition to Kähler geometry: we prove that the existence of an optimal symplectic connection implies semistability of the fibration. An optimal symplectic connection is a choice of fibrewise constant scalar curvature Kähler metric, satisfying a certain geometric partial differential equation. We conjecture that the existence of such a connection is equivalent to polystability of the fibration. We prove a finite dimensional analogue of this conjecture, by describing a GIT problem for fibrations embedded in a fixed projective space, and showing that GIT polystability is equivalent to the existence of a zero of a certain moment map.

Optimal symplectic connections on holomorphic submersions

The main result of this paper gives a new construction of extremal Kähler metrics on the total space of certain holomorphic submersions, giving a vast generalisation and unification of results of Hong, Fine and others. The principal new ingredient is a novel geometric partial differential equation on such fibrations, which we call the optimal symplectic connection equation. We begin with a smooth fibration for which all fibres admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. When the fibres admit automorphisms, such metrics are not unique in general, but rather are unique up to the action of the automorphism group of each fibre. We define an equation which, at least conjecturally, determines a canonical choice of constant scalar curvature Kähler metric on each fibre. When the fibration is a projective bundle, this equation specialises to asking that the hermitian metric determining the fibrewise Fubini-Study metric is Hermite-Einstein. Assuming the existence of an optimal symplectic connection, and the existence of an appropriate twisted extremal metric on the base of the fibration, we show that the total space of the fibration itself admits an extremal metric for certain polarisations making the fibres small.

Hermitian Yang-Mills connections on blowups

Consider a vector bundle over a Kähler manifold which admits a Hermitian Yang-Mills connection. We show that the pullback bundle on the blowup of the Kähler manifold at a collection of points also admits a Hermitian Yang-Mills connection, for Kähler classes on the blowup which make the exceptional divisors small. Our proof uses gluing techniques, and is hence asymptotically explict. This recovers, through the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence, algebro-geometric results due to Buchdahl and Sibley.

Extremal metrics on fibrations

Consider a fibred compact Kähler manifold X endowed with a relatively ample line bundle, such that each fibre admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric and has discrete automorphism group. Assuming the base of the fibration admits a twisted extremal metric where the twisting form is a certain Weil-Petersson type metric, we prove that X admits an extremal metric for polarisations making the fibres small. Thus X admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric if and only if the Futaki invariant vanishes. This extends a result of Fine, who proved this result when the base admits no continuous automorphisms. As consequences of our techniques, we obtain analogues for maps of various fundamental results for varieties: if a map admits a twisted constant scalar curvature Kähler metric metric, then its automorphism group is reductive; a twisted extremal metric is invariant under a maximal compact subgroup of the automorphism group of the map; there is a geometric interpretation for uniqueness of twisted extremal metrics on maps.

Blowing up extremal Poincaré type manifolds

We prove a version of the Arezzo-Pacard-Singer blow-up theorem in the setting of Poincaré type metrics. We apply this to give new examples of extremal Poincaré type metrics. A key feature is an additional obstruction which has no analogue in the compact case. This condition is conjecturally related to ensuring the metrics remain of Poincaré type.

Extremal Kähler Poincaré type metrics on toric varieties

We develop a general theory for the existence of extremal Kähler metrics of Poincaré type in the sense of Auvray, defined on the complement of a toric divisor of a polarized toric variety. In the case when the divisor is smooth, we obtain a list of necessary conditions which must be satisfied for such a metric to exist. Using the explicit methods of Apostolov-Calderbank-Gauduchon together with the computational approach of Sektnan, we show that on a Hirzebruch complex surface the necessary conditions are also sufficient. In particular, on such a complex surface the complement of the infinity section admits an extremal Kähler metric of Poincaré type whereas the complement of a fibre admits a complete ambitoric extremal Kähler metric which is not of Poincaré type.

An investigation of stability on certain toric surfaces

We investigate the relationship between stability and the existence of extremal Kähler metrics on certain toric surfaces. In particular, we consider how log stability depends on weights for toric surfaces whose moment polytope is a quadrilateral. We introduce a space of symplectic potentials for toric manifolds, which induces metrics with mixed Poincaré type and cone angle singularities. For quadrilaterals, we give a computable criterion for stability with 0 weights along two of the edges of the quadrilateral. This in turn implies the existence of a definite log-stable region for generic quadrilaterals. This uses constructions due to Apostolov-Calderbank-Gauduchon and Legendre.
