Bochner-Riesz means on the Heisenberg group

We prove new $L^p$ boundedness results for Bochner-Riesz means associated with the spectral decomposition of the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H_n$. Our results hold for a range $1\le p\le p_n$ where $p_n\to 2$ as $n\to\infty$. As shown by the first named author in 1990 a Stein-Tomas type Fourier restriction theorem fails to hold on $\mathbb H_n$ and thus previous results based on the approach by Fefferman and Stein from the Euclidean setting only allowed to cover the cases $p=1$ and $p=\infty$. Our results on Bochner-Riesz means follow from a more general $p$-sensitive spectral multiplier theorem which is the main result of this article. This is obtained as a consequence of $L^p$ estimates for square functions associated with the Heisenberg wave operator.

Spectral multipliers on Métivier groups

We prove an $L^p$-spectral multiplier theorem under the sharp regularity condition $s > d\left|1/p - 1/2\right|$ for sub-Laplacians on Métivier groups. The proof is based on a restriction type estimate which, at first sight, seems to be suboptimal for proving sharp spectral multiplier results, but turns out to be surprisingly effective. This is achieved by exploiting the structural property that for any Métivier group the first layer of any stratification of its Lie algebra is typically much larger than the second layer, a phenomenon closely related to Radon-Hurwitz numbers.

Spectral multipliers on two-step stratified Lie groups with degenerate group structure

Let $L$ be a sub-Laplacian on a two-step stratified Lie group $G$ of topological dimension $d$. We prove new $L^p$-spectral multiplier estimates under the sharp regularity condition $s>d\left|1/p-1/2\right|$ in settings where the group structure of $G$ is degenerate, extending previously known results for the non-degenerate case. Our results include variants of the free two-step nilpotent group on three generators and Heisenberg-Reiter groups. The proof combines restriction type estimates with a detailed analysis of the sub-Riemannian geometry of $G$. A key novelty of our approach is the use of a refined spectral decomposition into caps on the unit sphere in the center of the Lie group.

An $L^p$-spectral multiplier theorem with sharp $p$-specific regularity bound on Heisenberg type groups

We prove an $L^p$-spectral multiplier theorem for sub-Laplacians on Heisenberg type groups under the sharp regularity condition $s>d\left|1/p-1/2\right|$, where $d$ is the topological dimension of the underlying group. Our approach relies on restriction type estimates where the multiplier is additionally truncated along the spectrum of the Laplacian on the center of the group.

A $p$-specific spectral multiplier theorem with sharp regularity bound for Grushin operators

In a recent work, P. Chen and E. M. Ouhabaz proved a $p$-specific $L^p$-spectral multiplier theorem for the Grushin operator acting on $\mathbb{R}^{d_1}\times\mathbb{R}^{d_2}$ which is given by \[ L =-\sum_{j=1}^{d_1} \partial_{x_j}^2 - \bigg( \sum_{j=1}^{d_1} |x_j|^2\bigg) \sum_{k=1}^{d_2}\partial_{y_k}^2. \] Their approach yields an $L^p$-spectral multiplier theorem within the range $1< p\le \min\{ \frac{2d_1}{d_1+2},\frac{2(d_2+1)}{d_2+3} \}$ under a regularity condition on the multiplier which is sharp only when $d_1\ge d_2$. In this paper, we improve on this result by proving $L^p$-boundedness under the expected sharp regularity condition $s>(d_1+d_2)(1/p-1/2)$. Our approach avoids the usage of weighted restriction type estimates which played a key role in the work of P. Chen and E. M. Ouhabaz, and is rather based on a careful analysis of the underlying sub-Riemannian geometry and restriction type estimates where the multiplier is truncated along the spectrum.
