A hitchhiker's guide to first-order elliptic boundary value problems

To empower the mathematical hitchhiker wishing to use operator methods in geometry and topology, we present this user's guide to first-order elliptic boundary value problems. Existence, regularity, and Fredholmness are discussed for general first-order elliptic operators on manifolds with compact boundary. The focus is on a very general class of elliptic boundary conditions, which contain those that are pseudo-local as a special case, yielding the relative index theorem. A new characterisation of a subclass of elliptic boundary conditions is also given.

First-order elliptic boundary value problems on manifolds with non-compact boundary

We consider first-order elliptic differential operators acting on vector bundles over smooth manifolds with smooth boundary, which is permitted to be noncompact. Under very mild assumptions, we obtain a regularity theory for sections in the maximal domain. Under additional geometric assumptions, and assumptions on an adapted boundary operator, we obtain a trace theorem on the maximal domain. This allows us to systematically study both local and nonlocal boundary conditions. In particular, the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition occurs as a special case. Furthermore, we study contexts which induce semi-Fredholm and Fredholm extensions.

Geometric singularities and Hodge theory

We consider smooth vector bundles over smooth manifolds equipped with non-smooth geometric data. For nilpotent differential operators acting on these bundles, we show that the kernels of induced Hodge-Dirac-type operators remain isomorphic under uniform perturbations of the geometric data. We consider applications of this to the Hodge-Dirac operator on differential forms induced by so-called rough Riemannian metrics, which can be of only measurable coefficient in regularity, on both compact and non-compact settings. As a consequence, we show that the kernel of the associated non-smooth Hodge-Dirac operator with respect to a rough Riemannian metric remains isomorphic to smooth and singular cohomology when the underlying manifold is compact.

The space of rough Riemannian metrics

On a smooth connected manifold, we consider all possible locally elliptic and locally bounded measurable coefficient Riemannian metrics called rough Riemannian metrics. We equip this set with an extended metric which is connected if and only if the manifold is compact. We prove that this is a complete length extended metric space and the components on which the distance is finite are path-connected. Moreover, we identify the closure of smooth metrics in this space to be continuous metrics.

The relative index theorem for general first-order elliptic operators

The relative index theorem is proved for general first-order elliptic operators that are complete and coercive at infinity over measured manifolds. This extends the original result by Gromov-Lawson for generalised Dirac operators as well as the result of Bär-Ballmann for Dirac-type operators. The theorem is seen through the point of view of boundary value problems, using the graphical decomposition of elliptically regular boundary conditions for general first-order elliptic operators due to Bär-Bandara. Splitting, decomposition and the Phi-relative index theorem are proved on route to the relative index theorem.

Realisations of elliptic operators on compact manifolds with boundary

This paper investigates realisations of elliptic differential operators of general order on manifolds with boundary following the approach of Bär-Ballmann to first order elliptic operators. The space of possible boundary values of elements in the maximal domain is described as a Hilbert space densely sandwiched between two mixed order Sobolev spaces. The description uses Calderón projectors which, in the first order case, is equivalent to results of Bär-Bandara using spectral projectors of an adapted boundary operator. Boundary conditions that induce Fredholm as well as regular realisations, and those that admit higher order regularity, are characterised. In addition, results concerning spectral theory, homotopy invariance of the Fredholm index, and well-posedness for higher order elliptic boundary value problems are proven.

Boundary value problems for general first-order elliptic differential operators

We study boundary value problems for first-order elliptic differential operators on manifolds with compact boundary. The adapted boundary operator need not be selfadjoint and the boundary condition need not be pseudo-local. We show the equivalence of various characterisations of elliptic boundary conditions and demonstrate how the boundary conditions traditionally considered in the literature fit in our framework. The regularity of the solutions up to the boundary is proven. We show that imposing elliptic boundary conditions yields a Fredholm operator if the manifold is compact. We provide examples which are conveniently treated by our methods.

Functional calculus and harmonic analysis in geometry

In this short survey article, we showcase a number of non-trivial geometric problems that have recently been resolved by marrying methods from functional calculus and real-variable harmonic analysis. We give a brief description of these methods as well as their interplay. This is a succinct survey that hopes to inspire geometers and analysts alike to study these methods so that they can be further developed to be potentially applied to a broader range of questions.

Riesz continuity of the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator under perturbations of local boundary conditions

On a smooth complete Riemannian spin manifold with smooth compact boundary, we demonstrate that the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator $\mathrm{D}_{\mathcal B}$ in $\mathrm{L}^{2}$ depends Riesz continuously on $\mathrm{L}^{\infty}$ perturbations of local boundary conditions ${\mathcal B}$. The Lipschitz bound for the map ${\mathcal B} \to {\mathrm{D}}_{\mathcal B}(1 + {\mathrm{D}}_{\mathcal B}^2)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ depends on Lipschitz smoothness and ellipticity of ${\mathcal B}$ and bounds on Ricci curvature and its first derivatives as well as a lower bound on injectivity radius. More generally, we prove perturbation estimates for functional calculi of elliptic operators on manifolds with local boundary conditions.

Eigenvalue asymptotics for weighted Laplace equations on rough Riemannian manifolds with boundary

Our topological setting is a smooth compact manifold of dimension two or higher with smooth boundary. Although this underlying topological structure is smooth, the Riemannian metric tensor is only assumed to be bounded and measurable. This is known as a rough Riemannian manifold. For a large class of boundary conditions we demonstrate a Weyl law for the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian associated to a rough metric. Moreover, we obtain eigenvalue asymptotics for weighted Laplace equations associated to a rough metric. Of particular novelty is that the weight function is not assumed to be of fixed sign, and thus the eigenvalues may be both positive and negative. Key ingredients in the proofs were demonstrated by Birman and Solomjak nearly fifty years ago in their seminal work on eigenvalue asymptotics. In addition to determining the eigenvalue asymptotics in the rough Riemannian manifold setting for weighted Laplace equations, we also wish to promote their achievements which may have further applications to modern problems.

Heat kernels and regularity for rough metrics on smooth manifolds

We consider rough metrics on smooth manifolds and corresponding Laplacians induced by such metrics. We demonstrate that globally continuous heat kernels exist and are Hölder continuous locally in space and time. This is done via local parabolic Harnack estimates for weak solutions of operators in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients in weighted Sobolev spaces.

Riesz continuity of the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator under perturbations of the metric

We prove that the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator ${\mathrm D}_{\mathrm g}$ in ${\mathrm L}^2$ depends Riesz continuously on ${\mathrm L}^{\infty}$ perturbations of complete metrics ${\mathrm g}$ on a smooth manifold. The Lipschitz bound for the map ${\mathrm g} \to {\mathrm D}_{\mathrm g}(1 + {\mathrm D}_{\mathrm g}^2)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ depends on bounds on Ricci curvature and its first derivatives as well as a lower bound on injectivity radius. Our proof uses harmonic analysis techniques related to Calderón's first commutator and the Kato square root problem. We also show perturbation results for more general functions of general Dirac-type operators on vector bundles.

Essential self-adjointness of powers of first-order differential operators on non-compact manifolds with low-regularity metrics

We consider first-order differential operators with locally bounded measurable coefficients on vector bundles with measurable coefficient metrics. Under a mild set of assumptions, we demonstrate the equivalence between the essential self-adjointness of such operators to a negligible boundary property. When the operator possesses higher regularity coefficients, we show that higher powers are essentially self-adjoint if and only if this condition is satisfied. In the case that the low-regularity Riemannian metric induces a complete length space, we demonstrate essential self-adjointness of the operator and its higher powers up to the regularity of its coefficients. We also present applications to Dirac operators on Dirac bundles when the metric is non-smooth.

Geometric singularities and a flow tangent to the Ricci flow

We consider a geometric flow introduced by Gigli and Mantegazza which, in the case of smooth compact manifolds with smooth metrics, is tangen- tial to the Ricci flow almost-everywhere along geodesics. To study spaces with geometric singularities, we consider this flow in the context of smooth manifolds with rough metrics with sufficiently regular heat kernels. On an appropriate non- singular open region, we provide a family of metric tensors evolving in time and provide a regularity theory for this flow in terms of the regularity of the heat kernel. When the rough metric induces a metric measure space satisfying a Riemannian Curvature Dimension condition, we demonstrate that the distance induced by the flow is identical to the evolving distance metric defined by Gigli and Mantegazza on appropriate admissible points. Consequently, we demonstrate that a smooth compact manifold with a finite number of geometric conical singularities remains a smooth manifold with a smooth metric away from the cone points for all future times. Moreover, we show that the distance induced by the evolving metric tensor agrees with the flow of RCD(K, N) spaces defined by Gigli-Mantegazza.

Self-adjointness of the Gaffney Laplacian on vector bundles

We study the Gaffney Laplacian on a vector bundle equipped with a compatible metric and connection over a Riemannian manifold that is possibly geodesically incomplete. Under the hypothesis that the Cauchy boundary is polar, we demonstrate the self-adjointness of this Laplacian. Furthermore, we show that negligible boundary is a necessary and sufficient condition for the self-adjointness of this operator.

Continuity of solutions to space-varying pointwise linear elliptic equations

We consider pointwise linear elliptic equations of the form $\mathrm{L}_x u_x = η_x$ on a smooth compact manifold where the operators $\mathrm{L}_x$ are in divergence form with real, bounded, measurable coefficients that vary in the space variable $x$. We establish $\mathrm{L}^{2}$-continuity of the solutions at $x$ whenever the coefficients of $\mathrm{L}_x$ are $\mathrm{L}^{\infty}$-continuous at $x$ and the initial datum is $\mathrm{L}^{2}$-continuous at $x$. This is obtained by reducing the continuity of solutions to a homogeneous Kato square root problem. As an application, we consider a time evolving family of metrics $\mathrm{g}_t$ that is tangential to the Ricci flow almost-everywhere along geodesics when starting with a smooth initial metric. Under the assumption that our initial metric is a rough metric on $\mathcal{M}$ with a $\mathrm{C}^{1}$ heat kernel on a "non-singular" nonempty open subset $\mathcal{N}$, we show that $x \mapsto \mathrm{g}_t(x)$ is continuous whenever $x \in \mathcal{N}$.

The Kato square root problem on vector bundles with generalised bounded geometry

We consider smooth, complete Riemannian manifolds which are exponentially locally doubling. Under a uniform Ricci curvature bound and a uniform lower bound on injectivity radius, we prove a Kato square root estimate for certain coercive operators over the bundle of finite rank tensors. These results are obtained as a special case of similar estimates on smooth vector bundles satisfying a criterion which we call generalised bounded geometry. We prove this by establishing quadratic estimates for perturbations of Dirac type operators on such bundles under an appropriate set of assumptions.

Rough metrics on manifolds and quadratic estimates

We study the persistence of quadratic estimates related to the Kato square root problem across a change of metric on smooth manifolds by defining a class of Riemannian-like metrics that are permitted to be of low regularity and degenerate on sets of measure zero. We also demonstrate how to transmit quadratic estimates between manifolds which are homeomorphic and locally bi-Lipschitz. As a consequence, we demonstrate the invariance of the Kato square root problem under Lipschitz transformations of the space and obtain solutions to this problem on functions and forms on compact manifolds with a continuous metric. Furthermore, we show that a lower bound on the injectivity radius is not a necessary condition to solve the Kato square root problem.
