Quantum geometric scattering of a Dirac particle by a Berry curvature domain wall

We investigate the scattering of a three-dimensional massless Dirac particle through a domain wall separating two regions with identical energy spectra but distinct Berry curvature dipoles. We demonstrate that the quantum geometric mismatch induces partial reflection and transmission despite identical incident and refracted momenta. These results highlight the role of engineered quantum geometric interfaces as key tools to control Dirac particle scattering.

Scattering of a Dirac particle by a Berry phase domain wall

Massless Dirac particles are characterized by an effective pseudospin-momentum locking, which is the origin of the peculiar scattering properties of Dirac particles through potential barriers. This pseudospin-momentum locking also governs the quantum geometric properties (such as the Berry phase and Berry curvature) of Dirac particles. In the present work, we demonstrate that a domain wall separating two regions with distinct quantum geometric properties can serve as an alternative to potential barriers. Specifically, using the three-band $\alpha-T_3$ model of two-dimensional Dirac particles, we show that a Berry phase domain wall results in partial reflection and transmission of the Dirac particles, despite the fact that the incident and refracted momenta are identical.

Twisted bilayer graphene reveals its flat bands under spin pumping

The salient property of the electronic band structure of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), at the so-called magic angle (MA), is the emergence of flat bands around the charge neutrality point. These bands are associated with the observed superconducting phases and the correlated insulating states. Scanning tunneling microscopy combined with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy are usually used to visualize the flatness of the band structure of TBG at the MA. Here, we theoretically argue that spin pumping (SP) provides a direct probe of the flat bands of TBG and an accurate determination of the MA. We consider a junction separating a ferromagnetic insulator and a heterostructure of TBG adjacent to a monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide. We show that the Gilbert damping of the ferromagnetic resonance experiment, through this junction, depends on the twist angle of TBG, and exhibits a sharp drop at the MA. We discuss the experimental realization of our results which open the way to a twist switchable spintronics in twisted van der Waals heterostructures.

Kohn anomaly of optical zone boundary phonons in uniaxial strained graphene: role of the electronic band structure

One of the unique properties of graphene is its extremely high mechanical strength. Several studies have shown that the mechanical failure of graphene sheet under a tensile strain is due to the enhancement of the Kohn anomaly of the zone boundary transverse optical phonon modes. In this work, we derive an analytical expression of the Kohn anomaly parameter $α_{\vec{K}}$ of these phonons in graphene deformed by a uniaxial strain along the armchair direction. We show that, the tilt of Dirac cones, induced by the strain, contributes to the enhancement of the Kohn anomaly under a tensile deformation and gives rise to a dominant contribution of the so-called {\it outer} intervalley mediated phonon processes. Moreover, the Kohn anomaly is found to be anisotropic with respect to the phonon wave vectors around the K point. This anisotropy may be at the origin of the light polarization dependence of the Raman 2D band of the strained graphene. Our results uncover, not only, the role of the Kohn anomaly in the anisotropic mechanical failure of the graphene sheet, under strains applied along the armchair and zigzag directions, but shed also light on the doping induced strengthening of strained graphene.
