Universality of sine-kernel for Wigner matrices with a small Gaussian perturbation

We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identically distributed entries (Wigner matrices). We assume that the distribution of the entries have a Gaussian component with variance $N^{-3/4+β}$ for some positive $β>0$. We prove that the local eigenvalue statistics follows the universal Dyson sine kernel.

Universality of Wigner Random Matrices

We consider $N\times N$ symmetric or hermitian random matrices with independent, identically distributed entries where the probability distribution for each matrix element is given by a measure $ν$ with a subexponential decay. We prove that the local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for these matrices coincide with those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), respectively, in the limit $N\to \infty$. Our approach is based on the study of the Dyson Brownian motion via a related new dynamics, the local relaxation flow. We also show that the Wigner semicircle law holds locally on the smallest possible scales and we prove that eigenvectors are fully delocalized and eigenvalues repel each other on arbitrarily small scales.

Bulk Universality for Wigner Matrices

We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian Wigner random matrices $H$ where the probability density for each matrix element is given by the density $ν(x)= e^{- U(x)}$. We prove that the eigenvalue statistics in the bulk is given by Dyson sine kernel provided that $U \in C^6(\RR)$ with at most polynomially growing derivatives and $ν(x) \le C e^{- C |x|}$ for $x$ large. The proof is based upon an approximate time reversal of the Dyson Brownian motion combined with the convergence of the eigenvalue density to the Wigner semicircle law on short scales.

Wegner estimate and level repulsion for Wigner random matrices

We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identically distributed entries (Wigner matrices). The matrices are normalized so that the average spacing between consecutive eigenvalues is of order $1/N$. Under suitable assumptions on the distribution of the single matrix element, we first prove that, away from the spectral edges, the empirical density of eigenvalues concentrates around the Wigner semicircle law on energy scales $η\gg N^{-1}$. This result establishes the semicircle law on the optimal scale and it removes a logarithmic factor from our previous result \cite{ESY2}. We then show a Wegner estimate, i.e. that the averaged density of states is bounded. Finally, we prove that the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix repel each other, in agreement with the universality conjecture.

Rigorous Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with a Large Interaction Potential

Consider a system of $N$ bosons in three dimensions interacting via a repulsive short range pair potential $N^2V(N(x_i-x_j))$, where $\bx=(x_1, >..., x_N)$ denotes the positions of the particles. Let $H_N$ denote the Hamiltonian of the system and let $ψ_{N,t}$ be the solution to the Schrödinger equation. Suppose that the initial data $ψ_{N,0}$ satisfies the energy condition \[ < ψ_{N,0}, H_N ψ_{N,0} > \leq C N >. \] and that the one-particle density matrix converges to a projection as $N \to \infty$. Then, we prove that the $k$-particle density matrices of $ψ_{N,t}$ factorize in the limit $N \to \infty$. Moreover, the one particle orbital wave function solves the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a cubic non-linear Schrödinger equation with the coupling constant proportional to the scattering length of the potential $V$. In \cite{ESY}, we proved the same statement under the condition that the interaction potential $V$ is sufficiently small; in the present work we develop a new approach that requires no restriction on the size of the potential.

Ground state energy of large atoms in a self-generated magnetic field

We consider a large atom with nuclear charge $Z$ described by non-relativistic quantum mechanics with classical or quantized electromagnetic field. We prove that the absolute ground state energy, allowing for minimizing over all possible self-generated electromagnetic fields, is given by the non-magnetic Thomas-Fermi theory to leading order in the simultaneous $Z\to \infty$, $\al\to 0$ limit if $Z\al^2\leq κ$ for some universal $κ$, where $\al$ is the fine structure constant.

The ground state energy of a low density Bose gas: a second order upper bound

Consider $N$ bosons in a finite box $Λ= [0,L]^3\subset \bR^3$ interacting via a two-body nonnegative soft potential $V= λ\tilde V$ with $\tilde V$ fixed and $λ>0$ small. We will take the limit $L, N \to \infty$ by keeping the density $\varrho= N/L^{3}$ fixed and small. We construct a variational state which gives an upper bound on the ground state energy per particle $\e$ $$ \e \le 4π\varrho a \Big [1+ \frac{128}{15\sqrtπ}(\varrho a^3)^{1/2}S_λ\Big ] + O(\varrho^2|\log\varrho|), \quad {as $\varrho\to 0$} $$ with a constant satisfying $$ 1\leq S_λ\leq 1+Cλ. $$ Here $a$ is the scattering length of $V$ and thus depends on $λ$. In comparison, the prediction by Lee-Yang \cite{LYang} and Lee-Huang-Yang \cite{LHY} asserts that $S_λ=1$ independent of $λ$.

Local semicircle law and complete delocalization for Wigner random matrices

We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identical distributed entries. The matrix is normalized so that the average spacing between consecutive eigenvalues is of order 1/N. Under suitable assumptions on the distribution of the single matrix element, we prove that, away from the spectral edges, the density of eigenvalues concentrates around the Wigner semicircle law on energy scales $η\gg N^{-1} (\log N)^8$. Up to the logarithmic factor, this is the smallest energy scale for which the semicircle law may be valid. We also prove that for all eigenvalues away from the spectral edges, the $\ell^\infty$-norm of the corresponding eigenvectors is of order $O(N^{-1/2})$, modulo logarithmic corrections. The upper bound $O(N^{-1/2})$ implies that every eigenvector is completely delocalized, i.e., the maximum size of the components of the eigenvector is of the same order as their average size. In the Appendix, we include a lemma by J. Bourgain which removes one of our assumptions on the distribution of the matrix elements.

Dynamical formation of correlations in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider the evolution of $N$ bosons interacting with a repulsive short range pair potential in three dimensions. The potential is scaled according to the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling, i.e. it is given by $N^2V(N(x_i-x_j))$. We monitor the behavior of the solution to the $N$-particle Schrödinger equation in a spatial window where two particles are close to each other. We prove that within this window a short scale interparticle structure emerges dynamically. The local correlation between the particles is given by the two-body zero energy scattering mode. This is the characteristic structure that was expected to form within a very short initial time layer and to persist for all later times, on the basis of the validity of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the evolution of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The zero energy scattering mode emerges after an initial time layer where all higher energy modes disperse out of the spatial window. We can prove the persistence of this structure up to sufficiently small times before three-particle correlations could develop.

Quantum Dynamics with Mean Field Interactions: a New Approach

We propose a new approach for the study of the time evolution of a factorized $N$-particle bosonic wave function with respect to a mean-field dynamics with a bounded interaction potential. The new technique, which is based on the control of the growth of the correlations among the particles, leads to quantitative bounds on the difference between the many-particle Schrödinger dynamics and the one-particle nonlinear Hartree dynamics. In particular the one-particle density matrix associated with the solution to the $N$-particle Schrödinger equation is shown to converge to the projection onto the one-dimensional subspace spanned by the solution to the Hartree equation with a speed of convergence of order 1/N for all fixed times.

Rate of decoherence for an electron weakly coupled to a phonon gas

We study the dynamics of an electron weakly coupled to a phonon gas. The initial state of the electron is the superposition of two spatially localized distant bumps moving towards each other, and the phonons are in a thermal state. We investigate the dynamics of the system in the kinetic regime and show that the time evolution makes the non-diagonal terms of the density matrix of the electron decay, destroying the interference between the two bumps. We show that such a damping effect is exponential in time, and the related decay rate is proportional to the total scattering cross section of the electron-phonon interaction.

Quantum diffusion of the random Schrodinger evolution in the scaling limit

We consider random Schrödinger equations on $\bR^d$ for $d\ge 3$ with a homogeneous Anderson-Poisson type random potential. Denote by $λ$ the coupling constant and $ψ_t$ the solution with initial data $ψ_0$. The space and time variables scale as $x\sim λ^{-2 -κ/2}, t \sim λ^{-2 -κ}$ with $0< κ< κ_0(d)$. We prove that, in the limit $λ\to 0$, the expectation of the Wigner distribution of $ψ_t$ converges weakly to the solution of a heat equation in the space variable $x$ for arbitrary $L^2$ initial data. The proof is based on analyzing the phase cancellations of multiple scatterings on the random potential by expanding the propagator into a sum of Feynman graphs. In this paper we consider the non-recollision graphs and prove that the amplitude of the {\it non-ladder} diagrams is smaller than their "naive size" by an extra $λ^c$ factor {\em per non-(anti)ladder vertex} for some $c > 0$. This is the first rigorous result showing that the improvement over the naive estimates on the Feynman graphs grows as a power of the small parameter with the exponent depending linearly on the number of vertices. This estimate allows us to prove the convergence of the perturbation series.

Quantum diffusion for the Anderson model in the scaling limit

We consider random Schrödinger equations on $\bZ^d$ for $d\ge 3$ with identically distributed random potential. Denote by $λ$ the coupling constant and $ψ_t$ the solution with initial data $ψ_0$. The space and time variables scale as $x\sim λ^{-2 -κ/2}, t \sim λ^{-2 -κ}$ with $0< κ< κ_0(d)$. We prove that, in the limit $λ\to 0$, the expectation of the Wigner distribution of $ψ_t$ converges weakly to a solution of a heat equation in the space variable $x$ for arbitrary $L^2$ initial data. The diffusion coefficient is uniquely determined by the kinetic energy associated to the momentum $v$. This work is an extension to the lattice case of our previous result in the continuum \cite{ESYI}, \cite{ESYII}. Due to the non-convexity of the level surfaces of the dispersion relation, the estimates of several Feynman graphs are more involved.

Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation for the Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensate

Suppose that the initial data $ψ_{N,0}$ satisfies the energy condition \[ < ψ_{N,0}, H_N^k ψ_{N,0} > \leq C^k N^k \] for $k=1,2,... $. We also assume that the $k$-particle density matrices of the initial state are asymptotically factorized as $N\to\infty$. We prove that the $k$-particle density matrices of $ψ_{N,t}$ are also asymptotically factorized and the one particle orbital wave function solves the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a cubic non-linear Schrödinger equation with the coupling constant given by the scattering length of the potential $V$. We also prove the same conclusion if the energy condition holds only for $k=1$ but the factorization of $ψ_{N,0}$ is assumed in a stronger sense.

Rigorous Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

The time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation describes the dynamics of initially trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. We present a rigorous proof of this fact starting from a many-body bosonic Schroedinger equation with a short scale repulsive interaction in the dilute limit. Our proof shows the persistence of an explicit short scale correlation structure in the condensate.

Quantum diffusion of the random Schrodinger evolution in the scaling limit II. The recollision diagrams

The proof is based on a rigorous analysis of Feynman diagrams. In the companion paper the analysis of the non-repetition diagrams was presented. In this paper we complete the proof by estimating the recollision diagrams and showing that the main terms, i.e. the ladder diagrams with renormalized propagator, converge to the heat equation.

Decay of the Fourier transform of surfaces with vanishing curvature

We prove $L^p$-bounds on the Fourier transform of measures $μ$ supported on two dimensional surfaces. Our method allows to consider surfaces whose Gauss curvature vanishes on a one-dimensional submanifold. Under a certain non-degeneracy condition, we prove that $\whμ\in L^{4+β}$, $β>0$, and we give a logarithmically divergent bound on the $L^4$-norm. We use this latter bound to estimate almost singular integrals involving the dispersion relation, $e(p)= \sum_1^3 [1-\cos p_j]$, of the discrete Laplace operator on the cubic lattice. We briefly explain our motivation for this bound originating in the theory of random Schrödinger operators.
