Spin-polarized zero-bias peak from a single magnetic impurity at an s-wave superconductor: first-principles study

Magnetic impurities at surfaces of superconductors can induce bound states referred to as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states within superconducting gaps. Understanding of YSR states with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) plays a pivotal role in studies of Majorana zero modes. Spin polarization of a zero-bias peak (ZBP) is used to determine its topological nature. Here we investigate the YSR states of single magnetic impurities at the surface of Pb using the fully relativistic first-principles simulations including band structure of Pb and five 3$d$ orbitals of the impurity in the superconducting state. We show that for single Fe and Co impurities, strong SOC can induce a ZBP with rotation of the impurity magnetic moment and that the ZBP has large spin polarization in contrast to effective model studies. Conditions for a ZBP from a single magnetic impurity are discussed. Our results are relevant to longer atomic chains considering their canting and noncollinear magnetism.

Spin-spiral formalism based on the multiple scattering Green's function technique with applications to ultrathin magnetic films and multilayers

Based on the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function technique we present a computational scheme for calculating the electronic structure of layered systems with homogeneous spin-spiral magnetic state. From the self-consistent non-relativistic calculations the total energy of the spin-spiral states is determined as a function of the wave vector, while a relativistic extension of the formalism in first order of the spin-orbit coupling gives an access to the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. We demonstrate that the newly developed method properly describes the magnetic ground state of a Mn monolayer on W(001) and that of a Co monolayer on Pt(111). The obtained spin-spiral energies are mapped to a classical spin model, the parameters of which are compared to those calculated directly from the relativistic torque method. In case of the Co/Pt(111) system we find that the isotropic interaction between the Co atoms is reduced and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is increased when capped by a Ru layer. In addition, we perform spin-spiral calculations on Ir/Fe/Co/Pt and Ir/Co/Fe/Pt multilayer systems and find a spin-spiral ground state with very long wavelength due to the frustrated isotropic couplings between the Fe atoms, whereas the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strongly depends on the sequence of the Fe and Co layers.

Inducing skyrmions in ultrathin Fe films by hydrogen exposure

Magnetic skyrmions are localized nanometer-sized spin configurations with particle_like properties, which are envisioned to be used as bits in next_generation information technology. An essential step towards future skyrmion-based applications is to engineer key magnetic parameters for developing and stabilizing individual magnetic skyrmions. Here we demonstrate the tuning of the non_collinear magnetic state of an Fe double layer on an Ir111 substrate by loading the sample with atomic hydrogen. By using spin_polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover that the hydrogenated system supports the formation of skyrmions in external magnetic fields, while the pristine Fe double layer does not. Based on ab initio calculations, we attribute this effect to the tuning of the Heisenberg exchange and the Dzyaloshinsky_Moriya interactions due to hydrogenation. In addition to interface engineering, hydrogenation of thin magnetic films offers a unique pathway to design and optimize the skyrmionic states in low_dimensional magnetic materials.

Interfacial exchange interactions and magnetism of Ni2MnAl/Fe bilayers

Based on a multi-scale calculations, combining ab-initio methods with spin dynamics simulations, we perform a detailed study of the magnetic behavior of Ni2MnAl/Fe bilayers. Our simulations show that such a bilayer exhibits a small exchange bias effect when the Ni2MnAl Heusler alloy is in a disordered B2 phase. Additionally, we present an effective way to control the magnetic structure of the Ni2MnAl antiferromagnet, in the pseudo-ordered B2-I as well as the disordered B2 phases, via a spin-flop coupling to the Fe layer.

Modeling ultrafast all-optical switching in synthetic ferrimagnets

Based on numerical simulations, we demonstrate thermally induced magnetic switching in synthetic ferrimagnets composed of multilayers of rare-earth and transition metals. Our findings show that deterministic magnetization reversal occurs above a certain threshold temperature if the ratio of transition metal atoms to rare-earth atoms is sufficiently large. Surprisingly, the total thickness of the multilayer system has little effect on the occurence of switching. We further provide a simple argument to explain the temperature dependence of the reversal process.

Antiferromagnetism in Ru2MnZ (Z=Sn, Sb, Ge, Si) full Heusler alloys: effects of magnetic frustration and chemical disorder

We present systematic theoretical investigations to explore the microscopic mechanisms leading to the formation of antiferromagnetism in Ru2MnZ (Z= Sn,Sb,Ge,Si) full Heusler alloys. Our study is based on first-principles calculations of inter-atomic Mn-Mn exchange interactions to set up a suitable Heisenberg spin-model and on subsequent Monte-Carlo simulations of the magnetic properties at finite temperature. The exchange interactions are derived from the paramagnetic state, while a realistic account of long-range chemical disorder is made in the framework of the Coherent Potential Approximation. We find that in case of the highly ordered alloys (Z=Sn and Sb) the exchange interactions derived from the perfectly ordered L21 structure lead to Néel temperatures in excellent agreement with the experiments, whereas, in particular, in case of Si the consideration of chemical disorder is essential to reproduce the experimental Néel temperatures. Our numerical results suggest that improving a heat treatment of the samples to suppress the intermixing between the Mn and Si atoms, the Néel temperature of the Si-based alloys can potentially be increased by more than 30%. Furthermore, we show that in strongly disordered Ru2MnSi alloys a distinct change in the antiferromagnetic ordering occurs.

A route towards finding large magnetic anisotropy in nano-composites: application to a W$_{1-x}$Re$_x$/Fe multilayer

We suggest here a novel nano-laminate, 5[Fe]/2[W$_x$Re$_{1-x}$] (x=0.6-0.8), with enhanced magnetic hardness in combination with a large saturation moment. The calculated magnetic anisotropy of this material reaches values of 5.3-7.0 MJ/m$^3$, depending on alloying conditions. We also propose a recipe in how to identify other novel magnetic materials, such as nano-laminates and multilayers, with large magnetic anisotropy in combination with a high saturation moment.

Reversible enhancement of the magnetism of ultrathin Co films by H adsorption

By means of ab initio calculations, we have investigated the effect of H adsorption in the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of ultrathin Co films on Ru(0001). Our calculations predict that H occupies hollow sites preserving the two-dimensional 3-fold symmetry. The formation of a complete H overlayer leads to a very stable surface with strong H-Co bonds. H tends to suppress surface features, in particular, the enhancement of the magnetic moments of the bare film. The H-induced effects are mostly confined to the Co atoms bonded to H, independent of the H coverage or of the thickness and the structure of the Co film. However, for partial H coverages a significant increase occurs in the magnetic moment for the surface Co atoms not bonded to H, leading to a net enhancement of surface magnetism.

Coinage-metal capping effects on the spin-reorientations of Co/Ru(0001)

Thin films of Co/Ru(0001) are known to exhibit an unusual spin reorientation transition (SRT) coupled to the completion of Co atomic layers for Co thicknesses under 4 layers. By means of spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, we follow in real space the magnetization orientation during the growth of atomically thick capping layers on Co/Ru(0001). Capping with coinage-metal (Cu, Ag, Au) elements modifies the SRT depending on the Co and overlayer thickness and on the overlayer material, resulting in an expanded range of structures with high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The origin of the SRT can be explained in terms of ab-initio calculations of the layer-resolved contributions to the magnetic anisotropy energy. Besides the changes in the SRT introduced by the capping, a quantitative enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy is identified. A detailed analysis of the interplay between strain and purely electronic effects allows us to identify the conditions that lead to a high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in thin hcp Co films.

Imaging Spin Reorientation Transitions in Consecutive Atomic Co layers

By means of spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM) we show that the magnetic easy-axis of one to three atomic-layer thick cobalt films on ruthenium crystals changes its orientation twice during deposition: one-monolayer and three-monolayer thick films are magnetized in-plane, while two-monolayer films are magnetized out-of-plane, with a Curie temperature well above room temperature. Fully-relativistic calculations based on the Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (SKKR) method demonstrate that only for two-monolayer cobalt films the interplay between strain, surface and interface effects leads to perpendicular magnetization.

Exotic Kondo effect from magnetic trimers

Motivated by the recent experiments of Jamneala {\em et al.} [T. Jamnaela {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 256804 (2001)], by combining {\em ab-initio} and renormalization group methods, we study the strongly correlated state of a Cr trimer deposited on gold. Internal orbital fluctuations of the trimer lead to huge increase of $T_K$ compared to the single ion Kondo temperature explaining the experimental observation of a zero-bias anomaly for the trimers. The strongly correlated state seems to belong to a new, yet hardly explored class of non--Fermi liquid fixed points.

Evaluation of the optical conductivity tensor in terms of contour integrations

For the case of finite life-time broadening the standard Kubo-formula for the optical conductivity tensor is rederived in terms of Green's functions by using contour integrations, whereby finite temperatures are accounted for by using the Fermi-Dirac distribution function. For zero life-time broadening, the present formalism is related to expressions well-known in the literature. Numerical aspects of how to calculate the corresponding contour integrals are also outlined.
