An alternative non-negative gravitational energy tensor to the Bel-Robinson tensor

The Bel-Robinson tensor $B_{αβμν}$ gives a positive definite gravitational energy in the small sphere limit approximation. However, there is an alternative tensor $V_{αβμν}$ which was proposed recently that offers the same positivity as $B_{αβμν}$ does. These two tensors are a basis for expressions which have the desirable non-negative gravitational energy in the small sphere region limit.

Energy-momentum density in small regions: the classical pseudotensors

The values for the gravitational energy-momentum density, given by the famous classical pseudotensors: Einstein, Papapetrou, Landau-Lifshitz, Bergmann-Thompson, Goldberg, Møller, and Weinberg, in the small region limit are found to lowest non-vanishing order in normal coordinates. All except Møller's have the zeroth order material limit required by the equivalence principle. However for small vacuum regions we find that {\it none} of these classical holonomic pseudotensors satisfies the criterion of being proportional to the Bel-Robinson tensor. Generalizing an earlier work which had identified one case, we found another independent linear combination satisfying this requirement--and hence a one parameter set of linear combinations of the classical pseudotensors with this desirable property.

New positive small vacuum region gravitational energy expressions

We construct an infinite number of new holonomic quasi-local gravitational energy-momentum density pseudotensors with good limits asymptotically and in small regions, both materially and in vacuum. For small vacuum regions they are all a positive multiple of the Bel-Robinson tensor and consequently have positive energy.

Gravitational energy-momentum in small regions according to the tetrad-teleparallel expressions

The gravitational energy-momentum within a small region as determined by two tetrad-teleparallel expressions is evaluated with the aid of an orthonormal frame adapted to Riemann normal coordinates. We find that the gauge current "tensor" does enjoy the highly desired and rare property of being a positive multiple of the Bel-Robinson tensor, whereas Møller's expression does not.

Gravitational energy in small regions for the quasilocal expressions in orthonormal frames

The M$ø$ller tetrad gravitational energy-momentum expression was recently evaluated for a small vacuum region using orthonormal frames adapted to Riemann normal coordinates. However the result was not proportional to the Bel-Robinson tensor $B_{αβμν}$. Treating a modified quasilocal expressions in a similar way, we found one unique combination that gives a multiple of $B_{αβμν}$ which provides a non-negative gravitational energy-momentum in the small sphere approximation. Moreover, in addition to $B_{αβμν}$, we found a certain tensor $S_{αβμν}+K_{αβμν}$ which gives the same "energy-momentum" density in vacuum. Using this tensor combination, we obtained an infinite set of solutions that provides a positive gravitational energy within the same limit.

Gravitational energy in a small region for the modified Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensors

The purpose of the classical Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensors is for determining the gravitational energy. Neither of them can guarantee a positive energy in holonomic frames. In the small sphere approximation, it has been required that the quasilocal expression for the gravitational energy-momentum density should be proportional to the Bel-Robinson tensor $B_{αβμν}$. However, we propose a new tensor $V_{αβμν}$ which is the sum of certain tensors $S_{αβμν}$ and $K_{αβμν}$, it has certain properties so that it gives the same gravitational "energy-momentum" content as $B_{αβμν}$ does. Moreover, we show that a modified Einstein pseudotensor turns out to be one of the Chen-Nester quasilocal expressions, while the modified Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensor becomes the Papapetrou pseudotensor; these two modified pseudotensors have positive gravitational energy in a small region.

On the energy of homogeneous cosmologies

An energy for the homogeneous cosmological models is presented. More specifically, using an appropriate natural prescription, we find the energy within any region with any gravitational source for a large class of gravity theories--namely those with a tetrad description--for all 9 Bianchi types. Our energy is given by the value of the Hamiltonian with homogeneous boundary conditions; this value vanishes for all regions in all Bianchi class A models, and it does not vanish for any class B model. This is so not only for Einstein's general relativity but, moreover, for the whole 3-parameter class of tetrad-teleparallel theories. For the physically favored one parameter subclass, which includes the teleparallel equivalent of Einstein's theory as an important special case, the energy for all class B models is, contrary to expectation, negative.

Gravitational energy from a combination of a tetrad expression and Einstein's pseudotensor

The energy-momentum for a gravitating system can be considered by the tetard teleparalle gauge current in orthonormal frames. Whereas the Einstein pseudotensor used holonomic frames. Tetrad expression itself gives a better result for gravitational energy than Einstein's. Inspired by an idea of Deser, we found a gravitational energy expression which enjoys the positive energy property by combining the tetrad expression and the Einstein pseudotensor, i.e., the connection coefficient has a form appropriate to a suitable intermediate between orthonormal and holonomic frames.

The modification of the Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensrs

Deser et al. proposed a combination of the Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensors such that the second derivatives in vacuum are proportional to the Bel-Robinson tensor. Stimulated by their work, the present paper discuss the gravitational energy-momentum expression which has the same desirable Bel-Robinson tensor property. We find modifications of the Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensors that both give the same coefficient of the Bel-Robinson tensor in vacuum in holonomic frames.

On source coupling and the teleparallel equivalent to GR

Alternatives to the usual general relativity (GR) Riemannian framework include Riemann-Cartan and teleparallel geometry. The ``teleparallel equivalent of GR" (TEGR, aka GR${}_{||}$) has certain virtues, however there have been allegations of serious source coupling limitations. Now it is quite straightforward to show that the coupled dynamical field equations of Einstein's GR with any source can be accurately represented in terms of any other connection, in particular teleparallel geometry. Using an argument similar to one used long ago to show the "effective equivalence" between GR and the Einstein-Cartan theory, we construct the teleparallel action which is equivalent to a given Riemanian one; thereby finding the ``effectively equivalent" coupling principle for all sources, including spinors. No auxiliary field is required. Can one decide which is the real "physical" geometry? Invoking the minimal coupling principle may give a unique answer.

The Energy of Bianchi Type I and II Universes in Teleparallel Gravity

For certain models, the energy of the universe which includes the energy of both the matter and the gravitational fields is obtained by using the quasilocal energy-momentum in teleparallel gravity. It is shown that in the case of the Bianchi type I and II universes, not only the total energy but also the quasilocal energy-momentum for any region vanishes independently of the three dimensionless coupling constants of teleparallel gravity.

Classical pseudotenors and positivity in small regions

We have studied the famous classical pseudotensors in the small region limit, both inside matter and in vacuum. A recent work [Deser et al.1999 CQG 16, 2815] had found one combination of the Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz expressions which yields the Bel-Robinson tensor in vacuum. Using similar methods we found another independent combination of the Bergmann-Thomson, Papapetrou and Weinberg pseudotensors with the same desired property. Moreover we have constructed an infinite number of additional new holonomic pseudotensors satisfying this important positive energy requirement, all seem quite artificial. On the other hand we found that Moller's 1961 tetrad-teleparallel energy-momentum expression naturally has this Bel-Robinson property.

A modification of the Chen-Nester quasilocal expressions

Chen and Nester proposed four boundary expressions for the quasilocal quantities using the covariant Hamiltonian formalism. Based on these four expressions, there is a simple generalization that one can consider, so that a two parameter set of boundary expressions can be constructed. Using these modified expressions, a nice result for gravitational energy-momentum can be obtained in holonomic frames.
