Projective Symmetry and Its Breaking in Quadratic Metric-Affine Gravity

We investigate generalized projective symmetry and its breaking in four-dimensional parity-even metric-affine gravity, considering an action linear in curvature and at most quadratic in torsion and nonmetricity. We derive the action of the generalized projective transformation on the irreducible components of the affine geometry and determine the coupling relations defining the axial, metric-trace, and fully projectively invariant theories. Complete invariance reduces the $12$ gravitational coefficients to a five-parameter family and generates four vectorial Noether identities for the connection equations. Projective invariance makes the connection operator singular, thus we develop a symmetry-adapted method for solving its vacuum field equations. We then analyze couplings to Dirac, electromagnetic, and complex Klein-Gordon fields. Locally exact axial-projective transformations correspond to chiral rotations for massless fermions at the classical level, while a combination of covectors acts as an Abelian connection linking a locally exact vector-projective representative to scalar $U(1)$ symmetry. Standard Maxwell theory is independent of the affine connection, whereas a torsion-dependent Maxwell-like extension can preserve both electromagnetic and projective invariance through compensating Stückelberg fields. Exact gravitational projective invariance makes the corresponding connection directions nondynamical and forces matter currents sourcing them to vanish. Controlled explicit breaking lifts these zero modes and converts them into auxiliary fields. Thus, projective symmetry provides a unified principle for identifying affine gauge modes, constraining matter couplings, and relating symmetry breaking in the gravitational sector to effective matter interactions.

Scalar field with nonminimal couplings to metric-affine geometry

We study a scalar field nonminimally coupled to metric-affine gravity within actions linear in the affine curvature and containing all independent parity-even and parity-odd terms quadratic in torsion and nonmetricity, including mixed contractions. We also include Nieh-Yan-like derivative couplings between the scalar-field derivative and the four torsion and nonmetricity vectors. We derive the connection, metric, and scalar-field equations and, since the connection equation is algebraic, eliminate the independent connection on the generic nondegenerate branch to obtain an equivalent metric scalar-tensor theory in which the non-Riemannian interactions are encoded in an effective kinetic function. We classify several sectors and find that the pure quadratic nonmetricity and pure quadratic torsion sectors separately leave the Einstein-frame kinetic function unchanged relative to the simplest metric-affine scalar-tensor model, whereas their simultaneous presence, the derivative couplings, and generic mixed torsion-nonmetricity interactions can modify it. In the derivative-coupling sector, projective consistency imposes a relation among the couplings. We then consider polynomial coupling functions and study the resulting canonical field redefinition and Einstein-frame potentials. In particular, we illustrate how derivative and mixed torsion--nonmetricity couplings reshape quadratic and quartic potentials in canonical-field space, and show that a quadratic Jordan-frame potential can be mapped, for a suitable choice of derivative and nonminimal couplings, into a natural-inflation potential after canonical normalization. Finally, we separately impose the cosmological principle, determine the reduced combinations of quadratic couplings and the scalar field hypermomentum, and obtain the corresponding modified cosmological equations in the simplest sectors.

Temperature effects on white dwarfs in modified gravity

In this article we analyze the effects of a finite temperature equation of state on the equilibrium structure of white dwarfs in massive Brans-Dicke theory as well as the symmetron and dilaton screening mechanisms. We compute and present the numerically obtained mass-radius relation, effective gravitational constant as well as radial profiles of the scalar field, pressure and metric within the star. We show that assuming a non-zero temperature effectively results in a larger radius while leaving the total mass of the star essentially unchanged, and discuss the interplay between the effective gravitational constant, central density, and radius of the star.

Inflation with Nieh-Yan-like terms in metric-affine gravity

We study single-field slow-roll inflation in metric-affine gravity with a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the non-Riemannian Ricci scalar and to the divergences of the torsion and nonmetricity vectors, a structure that generalizes the well-known Nieh-Yan term. By imposing projective coherence of the matter sector and solving the connection field equations, we integrate out torsion and nonmetricity and obtain an equivalent Einstein-frame formulation in which the metric-affine couplings are encoded in a modified kinetic function and potential. For the choice of coupling functions $\mathcal{A}(ϕ) = M_P^2 + ξϕ^2$ to the non-Riemannian Ricci scalar, $\mathcal{C}_i(ϕ) = ξ_i ϕ$ to the Nieh-Yan-like terms and a monomial Jordan-frame potential $\mathcal{V} \propto ϕ^k$, we show that in the limit of a large positive effective Nieh-Yan-like coupling $\barξ$ the canonical field satisfies $χ\sim ϕ^2$, the Jordan-frame field values during inflation become sub-Planckian, and the Einstein-frame potential reduces to $U \sim χ^{k/2}$. We compute the slow-roll predictions numerically for quartic and quadratic Jordan-frame potentials and compare them with the current CMB constraints from Planck, BICEP/Keck, ACT, and SPT. We find that intermediate values of $\barξ$ can restore the compatibility of non-minimally coupled Palatini inflation with observations: in the quartic case, the model predicts a tensor-to-scalar ratio within reach of next-generation CMB experiments for $\barξ\lesssim10^4$, while in the quadratic case the coupling cures the $η$-problem arising for $ξ\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ and yields viable predictions for $10^{-2}\lesssim\barξ\lesssim 10^2$. In the negative $\barξ$ regime, the model does not improve upon standard Palatini inflation, though it can still produce distinct, testable predictions.

Frame invariant diffusive formulation of scalar-tensor gravity

Thermodynamics provides a useful interpretation of scalar-tensor gravity, in which the effective imperfect fluid admitted by the nonminimal coupling features a temperature that is associated with the departure from general relativity. However, in this construction, certain thermodynamical quantities are defined with respect to a particular conformal frame. In the present work, we show that the originally proposed effective temperature assigned to nonminimally coupled scalar field theories is not frame invariant, and can thus be arbitrarily tuned by a change of frame. This raises the question of whether temperature can be viewed as an intrinsic property of a scalar-tensor theory rather than a particular representation of it. Working instead with the frame invariant formulation of scalar-tensor gravity, we find that the frame invariant effective fluid is perfect with identically vanishing temperature. The departure from general relativity is then governed not by temperature, but rather by a frame invariant chemical potential, similar to minimal theories. Therefore, general relativity can be interpreted as a state of diffusive equilibrium for any scalar-tensor theory, regardless of whether it is minimal or nonminimal.

Friedmann cosmology with fluids and hyperfluids

We discuss flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric-affine cosmology where the metric and connection as well as the matter energy-momentum and hypermomentum all obey the symmetry of spatial homogeneity and isotropy. In particular, we outline a scenario where a dark dust fluid carries spin hypermomentum which makes its effective equation of state dynamical and might relate to the DESI DR2 data.

Global Portraits of Inflation in Nonsingular Variables

In the phase space perspective, scalar field slow roll inflation is described by a heteroclinic orbit from a saddle type fixed point to a final attractive point. In many models the saddle point resides in the scalar field asymptotics, and thus for a comprehensive view of the dynamics a global phase portrait is necessary. For this task, in the literature one mostly encounters dynamical variables that either render the initial or the final state singular, thus obscuring the full picture. In this work we construct a hybrid set of variables which allow the depiction of both the initial and final states distinctly in nonsingular manner. To illustrate the method, we apply these variables to portray various interesting types of scalar field inflationary models like metric Higgs inflation, metric Starobinsky inflation, pole inflation, and a nonminimal Palatini model.

Friedmann cosmology with hyperfluids of constant equation of state

We discuss some aspects of cosmology in metric-affine theories of gravity where metric and affine connection are independent variables. Such constructions, apart from the usual energy-momentum tensor, have an additional source, that of hypermomentum. Working with the cosmological principle assumption, we investigate the dynamics of the hypermomentum's degrees of freedom. In particular, we focus on the case where these degrees of freedom are proportional to the matter density and discuss the cosmological evolution depending on their associated indexes.

Friedmann cosmology with hyperfluids

In metric-affine gravity, both the gravitational and matter actions depend not just on the metric, but also on the independent affine connection. Thus matter can be modeled as a hyperfluid, characterized by both the energy-momentum and hypermomentum tensors. The latter is defined as the variation of the matter action with respect to the connection and it encodes extra (micro)properties of particles. For a homogeneous and isotropic universe, it was recently shown that the generic cosmological hypermomentum possesses five degrees of freedom: one in dilation, two in shear, and two in spin part. The aim of the current work is to present the first systematic study of the implications of this perfect hyperfluid on the universe with Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric. We adopt a simple model with non-Riemannian Einstein-Hilbert gravitational action plus arbitrary hyperfluid matter, and solve analytically the cosmological equations for single and multiple component hypermomentum contributions using different assumptions about the equation of state. It is remarkable, that in a number of cases the forms of the time evolution of the Hubble function and energy density still coincide with their general relativity counterparts, only the respective indexes $\mathrm{w}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ and $\mathrm{w}_ρ$ start to differ due to the hypermomentum corrections. The results and insights we obtained are very general and can assist in constructing interesting models to resolve the issues in standard cosmology.

Exploring the stability of $f(Q)$ cosmology near general relativity limit with different connections

In this work, we study cosmological spacetime configurations in $f(Q)$ gravity with nonvanishing symmetric teleparallel connections. It is known that the spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic connections can be classified into three sets. Focusing on two of those, we explore the stability of cosmological background evolution near the general relativity regime across radiation, matter, dark energy, and geometric dark energy dominated eras. Our results show that for the standard connection set 1 the general relativity regime can be realized in two ways and both exhibit stable behavior throughout all evolutionary epochs. Conversely, for the alternative connection set 2 the trivial general relativity limit is stable, while the nontrivial option exhibits stability during the radiation era and marginal stability during the matter era, but for the dark energy and geometric dark energy eras our results are inconclusive. Furthermore, we discuss the general conditions on the function $f(Q)$ that physically viable models should obey, and point out that for a generic $f(Q)$ the alternative connection sets 2 and 3 are prone to trigger a sudden singularity. This can happen even near the otherwise good looking general relativity regime, as we demonstrate by an explicit numerical example. Hence the alternative configurations could be problematic already on the background level.

Crystallized white dwarf stars in scalar-tensor gravity

We study the effects of massive scalar-tensor theories on the internal properties, crystallization, and cooling process of white dwarf stars that might potentially solve observational tensions. We show that these modified gravity theories alter the inner structure of the star leading to sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs. This further results in a modification of Debye temperature, ion and electron specific heats. Finally, we find that the cooling process is significantly shortened in scalar-tensor theories leading to reduced cooling ages.

Global Portraits of Nonminimal Inflation: Metric and Palatini

In this paper, we study the global phase space dynamics of single nonminimally coupled scalar field inflation models in the metric and Palatini formalisms. Working in the Jordan frame, we derive the scalar-tensor general field equations and flat FLRW cosmological equations, and present the Palatini and metric equations in a common framework. We show that inflation is characterized by a "master" trajectory from a saddle-type de Sitter fixed point to a stable node fixed point, approximated by slow roll conditions (presented for the first time in the Palatini formalism). We show that, despite different underlying equations, the fixed point structure and properties of many models are congruent in metric and Palatini, which explains their qualitative similarities and their suitability for driving inflation. On the other hand, the global phase portraits reveal how even models which predict the same values for observable perturbations differ, both to the extent of the phase space physically available to their trajectories, as well as their past asymptotic states. We also note how the slow roll conditions tend to underestimate the end of inflationary accelerated expansion experienced by the true nonlinear "master" solution. The explicit examples we consider range from the metric and Palatini induced gravity quintic potential with a Coleman-Weinberg correction factor to Starobinsky, metric and Palatini nonminimal Higgs, second order pole, and several nontrivial Palatini models.

Propagation and lensing of gravitational waves in Palatini $f(\hat R)$ gravity

Accelerated expansion of the Universe prompted searches of modified gravity theory beyond general relativity, instead of adding a mysterious dark energy component with exotic physical properties. One such alternative gravity approach is metric-affine Palatini $f(\hat{R})$ theory. By now routine gravitational wave detections have opened a promising avenue of searching for modified gravity effects. Future expected cases of strong lensing of gravitational waves will enhance this opportunity further. In this paper, we present a systematic study of the propagation and gravitational lensing of gravitational waves in Palatini $f(\hat R)$ gravity and compare it with general relativity. Using the WKB approximation we explore the geometric-optical limit of lensing and derive the corrections to the measured luminosity distance of the gravitational source. In addition, we study the lensing by the Singular Isothermal Sphere lens model and show that Palatini $f(\hat{R})$ modifies the lensing potential and hence the deflection angle. Then we show that the lens model and chosen theory of gravity influences the rotation of the gravitational wave polarization plane through the deflection angle. To be more specific we discuss the $f(\hat R)=\hat R+α\hat R^2$ gravity theory and find that the modifications comparing to general relativity are negligible if the upper bound of $α\sim 10^{9} \, $m$^2$ suggested in the literature is adopted. However, this bound is not firmly established and can be updated in the future. Therefore, the results we obtained could be valuable for further metric-affine gravity vs. general relativity tests involving lensing of gravitational waves and comparison of luminosity distances measured from electromagnetic and gravitational wave sources.

Conventionalism, cosmology and teleparallel gravity

We consider homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models in the framework of three geometrical theories of gravitation: in the Einstein general relativity they are given in terms of the curvature of the Levi-Civita connection in torsion free metric spacetimes, in the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity they are given in terms of the torsion of flat metric spacetimes, and in the symmetric teleparallel equivalent of general relativity they are given in terms of the nonmetricity of flat torsion free spacetimes. We argue that although these three formulations seem to be different, the corresponding cosmological models are in fact equivalent and their choice is conventional.

Coincident gauge for static spherical field configurations in symmetric teleparallel gravity

In symmetric teleparallel gravities, where the independent connection is characterized by nonmetricity while curvature and torsion are zero, it is possible to find a coordinate system whereby the connection vanishes globally and covariant derivatives reduce to partial derivatives -- the coincident gauge. In this paper we derive general transformation rules into the coincident gauge for spacetime configurations where the both the metric and connection are static and spherically symmetric, and write out the respective form of the coincident gauge metrics. Taking different options in fixing the freedom in the connection allowed by the symmetry and the field equations, the Schwarzschild metric in the coincident gauge can take for instance the Cartesian, Kerr-Schild, and diagonal (isotropic-like) forms, while the BBMB black hole metric in symmetric teleparallel scalar-tensor theory a certain diagonal form fits the coincident gauge requirements but the Cartesian and Kerr-Schild forms do not. Different connections imply different value for the boundary term which could in principle be physically relevant, but simple arguments about the coincident gauge do not seem to be sufficient to fix the connection uniquely. As a byproduct of the investigation we also point out that only a particular subset of static spherically symmetric connections has vanishing nonmetricity in the Minkowski limit.

Black hole solutions in scalar-tensor symmetric teleparallel gravity

Symmetric teleparallel gravity is constructed with a nonzero nonmetricity tensor while both torsion and curvature are vanishing. In this framework, we find exact scalarised spherically symmetric static solutions in scalar-tensor theories built with a nonminimal coupling between the nonmetricity scalar and a scalar field. It turns out that the Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein solution has a symmetric teleparallel analogue (in addition to the recently found metric teleparallel analogue), while some other of these solutions describe scalarised black hole configurations that are not known in the Riemannian or metric teleparallel scalar-tensor case. To aid the analysis we also derive no-hair theorems for the theory. Since the symmetric teleparallel scalar-tensor models also include $f(Q)$ gravity, we shortly discuss this case and further prove a theorem which says that by imposing that the metric functions are the reciprocal of each other ($g_{rr}=1/g_{tt}$), the $f(Q)$ gravity theory reduces to the symmetric teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (plus a cosmological constant), and the metric takes the (Anti)de-Sitter-Schwarzschild form.

Plebański-Demiański solutions with dynamical torsion and nonmetricity fields

We construct Plebański-Demiański stationary and axisymmetric solutions with two expanding and double principal null directions in the framework of Metric-Affine gauge theory of gravity. Starting from the new improved form of the metric with vanishing cosmological constant recently achieved by Podolský and Vrátný, we extend this form in the presence of a cosmological constant and derive the conditions under which the physical sources of the torsion and nonmetricity tensors provide dynamical contributions preserving it in Weyl-Cartan geometry. The resulting black hole configurations are characterised by the mass, orbital angular momentum, acceleration, NUT parameter, cosmological constant and electromagnetic charges of the Riemannian sector of the theory, as well as by the spin and dilation charges of the torsion and nonmetricity fields. The former is subject to a constraint representing a decoupling limit with the parameters responsible of axial symmetry, beyond which the geometry of the space-time is expected to be corrected.

Global portraits of nonminimal inflation

We reconsider the dynamical systems approach to analyze inflationary universe in the Jordan frame models of scalar field nonminimally coupled to curvature. The adopted set of variables allows us to clearly distinguish between different asymptotic states in the phase space, including the kinetic and inflationary regimes. Inflation is realized as a heteroclinic trajectory originating either at infinity from a nonhyperbolic asymptotic de Sitter point or from a regular saddle de Sitter point. We also present a comprehensive picture of possible initial conditions leading to sufficient inflationary expansion and show their extent on the phase diagrams. In addition we comment on the slow roll conditions applicable in the Jordan frame and show how they approximate the leading inflationary "attractor solution". As particular examples we portrait quadratic and quartic potential models and note that increasing the nonminimal coupling diminishes the range of good initial conditions in the quadratic case, but enlarges is in the quartic case.
