Rare and Experimentally Challenging Supersymmetry Signatures

Supersymmetry has long played a central role in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model at colliders, providing a comprehensive and internally consistent framework for generating well-motivated experimental signatures. For more than fifteen years of LHC operation, the CMS and ATLAS collaborations have achieved remarkable sensitivity to a wide range of supersymmetric signatures. Despite this unprecedented reach, no conclusive evidence for supersymmetry has emerged. If supersymmetry is nature's solution to outstanding questions in particle physics, it is necessarily challenging to find. In this article, we review supersymmetric signatures that are particularly rare or otherwise challenging, with a focus on searches at the Large Hadron Collider. We highlight experimental challenges relating to detector constraints and analysis difficulties, in addition to model challenges in the interpretation and optimization of searches. We also identify regions of signature space that remain comparatively unconstrained and therefore represent promising targets for future exploration.

Long-lived particles: theory and experimental probes

Long-lived particles (LLPs) are particles that are stable or that live long enough for their decays to be experimentally distinguishable in time or position from their production point. We provide an overview of the phenomenology and experimental signatures of LLPs, focusing on LLPs at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We explain what determines a particle's lifetime and we show that LLPs are ubiquitous both within the Standard Model and beyond. We survey the methods used to experimentally detect and characterize particles at collider-based experiments, and discuss how searches for LLPs present both experimental challenges and exciting new possibilities for detection. Finally, we situate LHC searches for LLPs within the broader experimental landscape with a brief overview of searches for LLPs at lower-energy experiments and a discussion of astrophysical and cosmological probes offering complementary insight into the physics of LLPs beyond the Standard Model.

Sensitivity to decays of long-lived dark photons at the ILC (A Snowmass White Paper)

We investigate the sensitivity to long-lived dark photons produced in Higgstrahlung events via the Higgs portal, $H \rightarrow γ_{D} γ_{D}$, with the Silicon Detector (SiD) at the International Linear Collider (ILC). These events provide a useful benchmark for tracking and vertex detector performance with long-lived particle decays at displaced vertices. The ILC is one of several Higgs factories proposed by the international community to study the properties of the Higgs boson at high precision.

Optimal use of Charge Information for the HL-LHC Pixel Detector Readout

The pixel detectors for the High Luminosity upgrades of the ATLAS and CMS detectors will preserve digitized charge information in spite of extremely high hit rates. Both circuit physical size and output bandwidth will limit the number of bits to which charge can be digitized and stored. We therefore study the effect of the number of bits used for digitization and storage on single and multi-particle cluster resolution, efficiency, classification, and particle identification. We show how performance degrades as fewer bits are used to digitize and to store charge. We find that with limited charge information (4 bits), one can achieve near optimal performance on a variety of tasks.
