Wavefunction of the Universe on the Landscape

This talk reviews the proposal for dynamically selecting the most probable wavefunction of the universe propagating on the landscape of string theory, by means of quantum cosmology. Talk given at 'Albert Einstein Century International Conference'-UNESCO, Paris July 18-22 2005.

Do We Have Evidence for New Physics in the Sky?

Predicting signatures of string theory on cosmological observables is not sufficient. Often the observable effects string theory may impact upon the cosmological arena may equally be predicted by features of inflationary physics. The question: what observable signatures are unique to new physics, is thus of crucial importance for claiming evidence for the theory. Here we discuss recent progress in addressing the above question. The evidence relies on identifying discrepancies between the source terms that give rise to large scale structure (LSS) and CMB, by cross-correlating the weak lensing potential maps LSS with the CMB spectra.

Can we predict $Λ$ for the Non-SUSY sector of the Landscape ?

We propose a new selection criteria for predicting the most probable wavefunction of the universe that propagates on the string landscape background, by studying its dynamics from a quantum cosmology view. Previously we applied this proposal to the $SUSY$ sector of the landscape. In this work the dynamic selection criterion is applied to the investigation of the non-$SUSY$ sector. In the absence of detailed information about its structure, it is assumed that this sector has a stochastic distribution of vacua energies. The calculation of a distribution probability for the cosmological constants $Λ_{eff}$, obtained from the density of states $ρ$, indicates that the most probable wavefunction is peaked around universes with zero $Λ_{eff}$. In contrast to the {\it extended wavefunction} solutions found for the $SUSY$ sector with $N$-vacua and peaked around $Λ_{eff}\simeq \frac{1}{N^2}$, wavefunctions residing on the non-$SUSY$ sector exhibit {\it Anderson localization}.Although minisuperspace is a limited approach it presently provides a dynamical quantum selection rule for the most probable vacua solution from the landscape.

Birth of the Universe from the Landscape of String Theory

We show that a unique, most probable and stable solution for the wavefunction of the universe, with a very small cosmological constant $Λ_1 \simeq (\fracπ{l_p N})^2$, can be predicted from the supersymmetric minisuperspace with $N$ vacua, of the landscape of string theory without reffering to the antropic principle. Due to the nearest neighbor tunneling in moduli space lattice, the $N$-fold degeneracy of vacua is lifted and a discrete spectrum of bound state levels over the whole minisuperspace emerges. $SUSY$ is spontaneously broken by these bound states, with discrete nonzero energy levels $Λ_s \simeq (\frac{s π}{l_p N})^2$, $s = 1,2,..$.

A First Glimpse of String Theory in the Sky?

We propose a new method for identifying new physics imprints on present observational data in cosmology whereby signatures of string theory are clearly distinguished from imprints of possible features on the inflaton potential. Our method relies on the cross-correlations spectra of cosmic shear from large scale structure (LSS) with the CMB temperature anisotropies and E-mode polarization, by using the following properties: inflationary cosmology provides only one source term for all CMB spectra and LSS which highly constrains any deviations from the standard predictions; string theory can add new non-inflationary channels to the source of perturbations as well as modify clustering properties at large scales. Discrepancies in the source terms of correlations and clustering properties provide the evidence for new physics. Models of single-field inflation with a feature are disfavored even with present data. Upcoming WMAP results and future data from weak lensing of LSS will further improve our ability to probe new physics in this manner and could open the first direct window to string theory.

Does the Low CMB Quadrupole Provide a New Cosmic Coincidence Problem ?

We point out that the recent WMAP findings of a suppressed large scale power in the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy power spectrum, if of cosmological origin, make the case for a new cosmic coincidence problem. The observed suppression of anisotropies at large angles requires an explanation for why this suppression is occuring {\it only} for perturbation wavelengths of the order of our present Hubble horizon. This is a very challenging task since a consistent model for the emerging picture of the universe has to address any cosmic coincidence and thus may reveal a deeper inter-relation with the dark energy problem.

What Can WMAP Tell Us About The Very Early Universe? New Physics as an Explanation of Suppressed Large Scale Power and Running Spectral Index

The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe microwave background data may be giving us clues about new physics at the transition from a ``stringy'' epoch of the universe to the standard Friedmann Robertson Walker description. Deviations on large angular scales of the data, as compared to theoretical expectations, as well as running of the spectral index of density perturbations, can be explained by new physics whose scale is set by the height of an inflationary potential. As examples of possible signatures for this new physics, we study the cosmic microwave background spectrum for two string inspired models: 1) modifications to the Friedmann equations and 2) velocity dependent potentials. The suppression of low ``l'' modes in the microwave background data arises due to the new physics. In addition, the spectral index is red (n<1) on small scales and blue (n>1) on large scales, in agreement with data.
