Sparsity and `Something Else': An Approach to Encrypted Image Folding

A property of sparse representations in relation to their capacity for information storage is discussed. It is shown that this feature can be used for an application that we term Encrypted Image Folding. The proposed procedure is realizable through any suitable transformation. In particular, in this paper we illustrate the approach by recourse to the Discrete Cosine Transform and a combination of redundant Cosine and Dirac dictionaries. The main advantage of the proposed technique is that both storage and encryption can be achieved simultaneously using simple processing steps.

Sparse Representation of Astronomical Images

Sparse representation of astronomical images is discussed. It is shown that a significant gain in sparsity is achieved when particular mixed dictionaries are used for approximating these types of images with greedy selection strategies. Experiments are conducted to confirm: i)Effectiveness at producing sparse representations. ii)Competitiveness, with respect to the time required to process large images. The latter is a consequence of the suitability of the proposed dictionaries for approximating images in partitions of small blocks. This feature makes it possible to apply the effective greedy selection technique Orthogonal Matching Pursuit, up to some block size. For blocks exceeding that size a refinement of the original Matching Pursuit approach is considered. The resulting method is termed Self Projected Matching Pursuit, because is shown to be effective for implementing, via Matching Pursuit itself, the optional back-projection intermediate steps in that approach.

Subspace modelling for structured noise suppression

The problem of structured noise suppression is addressed by i)modelling the subspaces hosting the components of the signal conveying the information and ii)applying a non-extensive nonlinear technique for effecting the right separation. Although the approach is applicable to all situations satisfying the hypothesis of the proposed framework, this work is motivated by a particular scenario, namely, the cancellation of low frequency noise in broadband seismic signals.

Adaptive non-uniform B-spline dictionaries on a compact interval

Non-uniform B-spline dictionaries on a compact interval are discussed. For each given partition, dictionaries of B-spline functions for the corresponding spline space are constructed. It is asserted that, by dividing the given partition into subpartitions and joining together the bases for the concomitant subspaces, slightly redundant dictionaries of B-splines functions are obtained. Such dictionaries are proved to span the spline space associated to the given partition. The proposed construction is shown to be potentially useful for the purpose of sparse signal representation. With that goal in mind, spline spaces specially adapted to produce a sparse representation of a given signal are considered.

Nonlinear non-extensive approach for identification of structured information

The problem of separating structured information representing phenomena of differing natures is considered. A structure is assumed to be independent of the others if can be represented in a complementary subspace. When the concomitant subspaces are well separated the problem is readily solvable by a linear technique. Otherwise, the linear approach fails to correctly discriminate the required information. Hence, a non extensive approach is proposed. The resulting nonlinear technique is shown to be suitable for dealing with cases that cannot be tackled by the linear one.

Measurements design and phenomena discrimination

The construction of measurements suitable for discriminating signal components produced by phenomena of different types is considered. The required measurements should be capable of cancelling out those signal components which are to be ignored when focusing on a phenomenon of interest. Under the hypothesis that the subspaces hosting the signal components produced by each phenomenon are complementary, their discrimination is accomplished by measurements giving rise to the appropriate oblique projector operator. The subspace onto which the operator should project is selected by nonlinear techniques in line with adaptive pursuit strategies.

From cardinal spline wavelet bases to highly coherent dictionaries

Wavelet families arise by scaling and translations of a prototype function, called the {\em {mother wavelet}}. The construction of wavelet bases for cardinal spline spaces is generally carried out within the multi-resolution analysis scheme. Thus, the usual way of increasing the dimension of the multi-resolution subspaces is by augmenting the scaling factor. We show here that, when working on a compact interval, the identical effect can be achieved without changing the wavelet scale but reducing the translation parameter. By such a procedure we generate a redundant frame, called a {\em{dictionary}}, spanning the same spaces as a wavelet basis but with wavelets of broader support. We characterise the correlation of the dictionary elements by measuring their `coherence' and produce examples illustrating the relevance of highly coherent dictionaries to problems of sparse signal representation.

Sparse Representations for Structured Noise Filtering

The role of sparse representations in the context of structured noise filtering is discussed. A strategy, especially conceived so as to address problems of an ill posed nature, is presented. The proposed approach revises and extends the Oblique Matching Pursuit technique. It is shown that, by working with an orthogonal projection of the signal to be filtered, it is possible to apply orthogonal matching pursuit like strategies in order to accomplish the required signal discrimination

Constructive updating/downdating of oblique projectors: a generalization of the Gram-Schmidt process

A generalization of the Gram-Schmidt procedure is achieved by providing equations for updating and downdating oblique projectors. The work is motivated by the problem of adaptive signal representation outside the orthogonal basis setting. The proposed techniques are shown to be relevant to the problem of discriminating signals produced by different phenomena when the order of the signal model needs to be adjusted.

Oblique Matching Pursuit

A method for selecting a suitable subspace for discriminating signal components through an oblique projection is proposed. The selection criterion is based on the consistency principle introduced by M. Unser and A. Aldroubi and extended by Y. Elder. An effective implementation of this principle for the purpose of subspace selection is achieved by updating of the dual vectors yielding the corresponding oblique projector.

Cardinal B-spline dictionaries on a compact interval

A prescription for constructing dictionaries for cardinal spline spaces on a compact interval is provided. It is proved that such spaces can be spanned by dictionaries which are built by translating a prototype B-spline function of fixed support into the knots of the required cardinal spline space. This implies that cardinal spline spaces on a compact interval can be spanned by dictionaries of cardinal B-spline functions of broader support that the corresponding basis function.

Oversampling and transmission of hidden information

The lack of uniqueness arising by oversampling of Fourier coefficients is shown to provide a way of transmitting hidden information. A basic encoding/decoding system, developed on the basis of such a possibility, is discussed. The system is devised with the double purpose of: (a) enabling the transmission of an arbitrary signal and (b) allowing for the transmission of a hidden embedded code.

Backward Adaptive Biorthogonalization

A backward biorthogonalization approach is proposed, which modifies biorthogonal functions so as to generate orthogonal projections onto a reduced subspace. The technique is relevant to problems amenable to be represented by a general linear model. In particular, problems of data compression, noise reduction and sparse representations may be tackled by the proposed approach.
