Coexistence of Antiferromagnetic Cubic and Ferromagnetic Tetragonal Polymorphs in Epitaxial CuMnSb

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry shows that epitaxial CuMnSb films exhibit a coexistence of two magnetic phases, coherently intertwined in nanometric scales. The dominant $α$~phase is half-Heusler cubic antiferromagnet with the Néel temperature of 62~K, the equilibrium structure of bulk CuMnSb. The secondary phase is its ferromagnetic tetragonal $β$ polymorph with the Curie temperature of about 100~K. First principles calculations provide a consistent interpretation of experiment, since (i) total energy of $β$--CuMnSb is higher than that of $α$--CuMnSb only by 0.12~eV per formula unit, which allows for epitaxial stabilization of this phase, (ii) the metallic character of $β$--CuMnSb favors the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida ferromagnetic coupling, and (iii) the calculated effective Curie-Weiss magnetic moment of Mn ions in both phases is about $5.5~μ_\mathrm{B}$, favorably close to the measured value. Calculated properties of all point native defects indicate that the most likely to occur are $\mathrm{Mn}_\mathrm{Cu}$ antisites. They affect magnetic properties of epilayers, but they cannot induce the ferromagnetic order in CuMnSb. Combined, the findings highlight a practical route towards fabrication of functional materials in which coexisting polymorphs provide complementing functionalities in one host.

Topolectrical circuit realization of topological corner modes

Quantized electric quadrupole insulators have recently been proposed as novel quantum states of matter in two spatial dimensions. Gapped otherwise, they can feature zero-dimensional topological corner mid-gap states protected by the bulk spectral gap, reflection symmetries and a spectral symmetry. Here we introduce a topolectrical circuit design for realizing such corner modes experimentally and report measurements in which the modes appear as topological boundary resonances in the corner impedance profile of the circuit. Whereas the quantized bulk quadrupole moment of an electronic crystal does not have a direct analogue in the classical topolectrical-circuit framework, the corner modes inherit the identical form from the quantum case. Due to the flexibility and tunability of electrical circuits, they are an ideal platform for studying the reflection symmetry-protected character of corner modes in detail. Our work therefore establishes an instance where topolectrical circuitry is employed to bridge the gap between quantum theoretical modelling and the experimental realization of topological band structures.

Cross correlations in disordered, four-terminal graphene-ribbon conductor: Hanbury-Brown and Twiss exchange as a sign of non-universality of noise

We have investigated current-current correlations in a cross-shaped conductor made of graphene ribbons. We measured auto and cross correlations and compared them with the theoretical predictions for ideal diffusive conductors. Our data deviate from these predictions and agreement can be obtained only by adding contributions from occupation-number noise in the central region connecting the arms of the cross. Furthermore, we have determined Hanbury -- Brown and Twiss (HBT) exchange correlations in this system. Contrary to expectations for a cross-shaped diffusive system, we find finite HBT exchange effects due to the occupation-number noise at the crossing. The strength of these HBT exchange correlations is found to vary with gate voltage, and very a distinct HBT effect with large fluctuations is observed near the Dirac point.
