Super adaptable graphs and the realization problem

We introduce and study the family of super adaptable monoids, which includes, among many others, all conical refinement monoids that are either finitely generated, or countable, primely generated, and regular. Our main result shows that any countable super adaptable monoid can be realized by a von Neumann regular ring, thus answering affirmatively the Realization problem for this class. The result is new even for the subclass of countable, primely generated, regular conical refinement monoids, which we show can be realized by both a von Neumann regular ring and a purely infinite, real rank zero C*-algebra. To prove this result, we develop a systematic framework that connects three fundamental structures: abstract monoids, separated graphs (a specific class of colored graphs), and von Neumann regular rings. By establishing functorial connections among these classes, we translate several algebraic properties of monoids into combinatorial and ring-theoretic notions. This allows us not only to prove the main realization result, but also to obtain several characterizations of super adaptable monoids. As a particular application, these can be used to provide a complete characterization of which regular monoids arise as graph monoids. To our knowledge, this work offers the first self-contained treatment in the literature where the complete realization process ---from abstract monoids through I-systems and separated graphs to regular rings and C*-algebras--- is developed sequentially and in full detail within a single text.

On the Nielsen-Thomsen sequence

The Nielsen-Thomsen sequence plays a pivotal role in refining invariants for C$^*$-algebras beyond the Elliott classification framework. This paper revisits the sequence, introducing the concepts of Nielsen-Thomsen bases, rotation maps and diagonalisable morphisms, to better understand its unnatural splitting. These insights enable novel comparison methods for *-homomorphisms at the level of the Hausdorffized algebraic K$_1$-groups, and subsequently the Hausdorffized unitary Cuntz group. We apply our methods to classification via the Hausdorffized unitary Cuntz semigroup. In particular, we present a new proof of the non-isomorphism between two A$\mathbb{T}$-algebras constructed by Gong, Jiang and Li. We also exhibit several pairs of non-unitarily equivalent *-homomorphisms with domain C($\mathbb{T}$).

Tracially reflexive C*-algebras

Motivated by a question of L. Robert, asking whether $\rm L(T(A)) = Lsc_{C}(T(A))$ for any separable C*-algebra A, we introduce and initiate the study of \emph{tracially reflexive C*-algebras}. We first prove that commutative C*-algebras are tracially reflexive. We also prove that tracial reflexiveness satisfies permanence properties, such as being preserved under inductive limits. Subsequently, we expose two criteria for tracial reflexiveness, using the Cuntz semigroup and a weak version of the Schröder-Simpson theorem, respectively. In particular, separable topological dimension zero C*-algebras are tracially reflexive. We end the manuscript by closing remarks that could lead to further lines of investigation involving tracial reflexiveness.

Continuous fields of interval algebras

This paper investigates and classifies a specific class of one-parameter continuous fields of C*-algebras, which can be seen as generalized AI-algebras. Building on the classification of *-homomorphisms between interval algebras by the Cuntz semigroup, along with a selection theorem and a gluing procedure, we employ a 'local-to-global' strategy to achieve our classification result.

Towards a classification of unitary elements of C*-algebras

In [5] the author conjectures and partially shows that the Cuntz semigroup classifies unitary elements of unital AF-algebras. We provide a complete proof by addressing the existence part of the conjecture, under a mild adjustment of both domain and codomain of the functor Cu. We also tackle the classification beyond the AF case and more particularly, we look at unitary elements of what we call AH$_1$-algebras. We obtain positive progress as far as the existence part is concerned. Nevertheless, we reveal that extra information is needed for the uniqueness part of the classification that the Cuntz semigroup fails to capture.

Fraïssé Theory for Cuntz semigroups

We introduce a Fraïssé theory for abstract Cuntz semigroups akin to the theory of Fraïssé categories developed by Kubiś. In particular, we show that any (Cuntz) Fraïssé category has a unique Fraïssé limit which is both universal and homogeneous. We also give several examples of such categories and compute their Fraïssé limits. During our investigations, we develop a general theory of Cauchy sequences and intertwinings in the category Cu.

A systematic approach for invariants of C*-algebras

We define a categorical framework in which we build a systematic construction that provides generic invariants for C*-algebras. The benefit is significant as we show that any invariant arising this way automatically enjoys nice properties such as continuity, metric on morphisms and a theory of ideals and quotients which naturally encapsulates compatibility diagrams. Consequently, any of these invariants appear as good candidates for the classification of non-simple C*-algebras. Further, it is worth mentioning that most of the existing invariants could be rewritten via this method. As an application, we define an Hausdorffized version of the unitary Cuntz semigroup and explore its potential towards classification results. We pose several open lines of research.

The unitary Cuntz semigroup on the classification of non-simple C*-algebras

This paper argues that the unitary Cuntz semigroup, introduced in [10] and termed Cu$_1$, contains crucial information regarding the classification of non-simple C$^*$-algebras. We exhibit two (non-simple) C$^*$-algebras that agree on their Cuntz semigroups, termed Cu, and their K$_1$-groups and yet disagree at level of their unitary Cuntz semigroups. In the process, we establish that the unitary Cuntz semigroup contains rigorously more information about non-simple C$^*$-algebras than Cu and K$_1$ alone.

Uniformly Based Cuntz semigroups and approximate intertwinings

We study topological aspects of the category of abstract Cuntz semigroups, termed Cu. We provide a suitable setting in which we are able to uniformly control how to approach an element of a Cu-semigroup by a rapidly increasing sequence. This approximation induces a semimetric on the set of Cu-morphisms, generalizing Cu-metrics that had been constructed in the past for some particular cases. Further, we develop an approximate intertwining theory for the category Cu. Finally, we give several applications such as the classification of unitary elements of any unital AF-algebra by means of the functor Cu.

Unitary Cuntz semigroups of ideals and quotients

We define a notion of ideal for objects in the category of abstract unitary Cuntz semigroups introduced in [3] and termed Cu$^\sim$. We show that the set of ideals of a Cu$^\sim$-semigroup has a complete lattice structure. In fact, we prove that for any C$^*$-algebra of stable rank one $A$, the assignment $I\longmapsto$Cu$_1(I)$ defines a complete lattice isomorphism between the set of ideals of $A$ and the set of ideals of its unitary Cuntz semigroup Cu$_1(A)$. Further, we introduce a notion of quotients and exactness for the (non abelian) category Cu$^\sim$. We show that Cu$_1(A)/$Cu$_1(I)\simeq$ Cu$_1(A/I)$ for any ideal $I$ in $A$ and that the functor Cu$_1$ is exact. Finally, we link a Cu$^\sim$-semigroup with the Cu-semigroup of its positive elements and the abelian group of its maximal elements in a split-exact sequence. This result allows us to extract additional information that lies within the unitary Cuntz semigroup of a C$^*$-algebra of stable rank one.

A unitary Cuntz semigroup for C*-algebras of stable rank one

We introduce a new invariant for C*-algebras of stable rank one that merges the Cuntz semigroup information together with the K$_1$-group information. This semigroup, termed the Cu$_1$-semigroup, is constructed as equivalence classes of pairs consisting of a positive element in the stabilization of the given C*-algebra together with a unitary element of the unitization of the hereditary subalgebra generated by the given positive element. We show that the Cu$_1$-semigroup is a well-defined continuous functor from the category of C*-algebras of stable rank one to a suitable codomain category that we write Cu$^\sim$. Furthermore, we compute the Cu$_1$-semigroup of some specific classes of C*-algebras. Finally, in the course of our investigation, we show that we can recover functorially Cu, K$_1$ and K$_*:=$K$_0$$\oplus$ K$_1$ from Cu$_1$.
