The Phase Space of Gravity on Null Hypersurfaces

We construct the bulk kinematical Poisson structure of general relativity on a caustic-free null segment, prior to imposing the Raychaudhuri and Damour constraints. We first show that shifts of the Ehresmann connection, also known as Carroll boosts, are pure gauge in gravity. This allows the Ehresmann connection to be fixed as a background structure and leads to the prime phase space of null gravitational data. The resulting phase space comprises of a spin-0 pair that includes the area and its conjugate, a spin-1 pair including the null direction and its conjugate, and the spin-2 sector encoded in the unimodular transverse metric. We then construct the brackets through a three-stage Dirac reduction implementing a normalization, horizontality, and shear constraints. We find that the spin-2 bracket is non-local and involves an antisymmetric Green kernel for a first-order transport operator along the null generators. The self-brackets of the spin-0 and spin-1 momenta involve, respectively, the vertical and horizontal derivatives of the transverse metric contracted with the spin-2 propagator. We finally provide an independent derivation of the brackets from the explicit realization of the Hamiltonian vector fields of the symplectic form. These results provide the classical canonical arena for studying the null constraint algebra, observables, and quantization.

Celestial 1-form symmetries

The $S$-algebra originally arose as a chiral algebra of asymptotic symmetries of Yang-Mills theory. We show that in the self-dual sector of Yang-Mills, the $S$-algebra gets upgraded to an infinite-dimensional algebra of $1$-form symmetries in the bulk. The associated 2-form currents encode the integrability and hierarchies of self-dual Yang-Mills. As an application, we prove the equality of Carrollian corner charges with modes of the celestial chiral algebra by expressing them as integrals of the same 2-form currents over homologous 2-cycles.

Gravitational null rays: Covariant Quantization and the Dressing Time

We quantize the degrees of freedom on a gravitational null ray segment in a fully gauge-invariant manner by using the dressing time as a quantum reference frame (QRF). Our work goes beyond previous models in that the QRF we employ is made out of the gravitational field itself, and accounts for the full group of diffeomorphisms along the ray, not just a locally compact subgroup. The key tool we introduce is covariant normal ordering, a QRF-dependent but background-independent renormalization prescription that restores diffeomorphism covariance at the quantum level. This enables the definition of a quantum dressing map whose image is the algebra of gauge-invariant observables. We find that this algebra carries the structure of a Virasoro crossed product, and that the dressing map induces a deformed product on gauge-fixed operators which can be understood as a quantization of the Dirac bracket, with consequences for the fluctuations of observables. We explain how to cancel anomalies in the physical Hilbert space representation of the gauge-invariant algebra by including a deformation at the classical level, thereby eliminating all spurious degrees of freedom at the quantum level. The physical Hilbert space admits a Page-Wootters reduction map to the perspective of the dressing time, and we show that the dressing time is non-ideal in the sense that its distinct coherent states have non-vanishing overlaps governed by the Teo-Takhtajan energy, i.e. the K\"ahler potential for Virasoro coadjoint orbits.

Geometric noise spectrum in interferometers

We study the power spectral density of time delay fluctuations in an interferometer as a potential low-energy quantum gravitational observable. We derive a general expression for the spectrum in terms of the Wightman function of linear metric perturbations, which we then apply to a variety of cases. We analyze the intrinsic graviton fluctuations in the vacuum, thermal, and squeezed states, as well as the fluctuations induced by the vacuum stress-energy of a massless scalar field. We find that the resulting spectra are free of ultraviolet divergences and that, while thermal and squeezed states provide a natural amplification mechanism, the spectra remain suppressed by the Planck scale.

Localization and anomalous reference frames in gravity

In this work, we study the classical phase space for the gravitational degrees of freedom along a null ray. We construct gauge-invariant observables localized on a null ray segment that commute with those localized on the complement; thus, the phase space describes a genuine gravitational subsystem compatible with both locality and diffeomorphism invariance. Our construction employs 'dressing time' (a null time coordinate built from spin 0 gravitational degrees of freedom) as a dynamical reference frame. The existence of such a frame depends on the use of edge mode variables, which we argue are generally required to upgrade a local gauge-fixing condition to a global 'frame-fixing'. To analyze the effects of quantum diffeomorphism anomalies on these structures, we then establish an 'effective' classical description in which the Raychaudhuri equation, symplectic form, and edge mode variables all acquire Virasoro-type deformations. Within this framework, we identify three distinct diffeomorphism actions: reparametrizations (gauge transformations), reorientations (physical symmetries of the reference frame), and dressed reparametrizations. Each acquires its own central extension and plays a different crucial role in the effective theory. The resulting structures provide a foundation for quantizing gravitational null ray segments, including promoting dressing time to a genuine quantum reference frame.

Non-Perturbative $S$-matrix Renormalization

We propose a renormalization group flow equation for a functional that generates $S$-matrix elements and which captures similarities to the well-known Wetterich and Polchinski equations. While the latter ones respectively involve the effective action and Schwinger functional, which are genuine off-shell objects, the presented flow equation has the advantage of working more directly with observables, i.e. scattering amplitudes. Compared to the Wetterich equation, our flow equation also greatly simplifies the notion of going on-shell, in the sense of satisfying the quantum equations of motion. In addition, unlike the Wetterich equation, it is polynomial and does not require a Hessian inversion. The approach is a promising direction for non-perturbative quantum field theories, allowing one to work more directly with scattering amplitudes.

Asymptotic Higher Spin Symmetries IV: Einstein-Yang-Mills Theory

We generalize the analysis of the asymptotic higher spin symmetries developed in the first three parts of this series by considering the minimal coupling of Einstein Gravity and Yang-Mills theory. We show that there exist symmetry parameters that satisfy a collection of dual equations of motion, which allow the construction of an infinite collection of charges that are conserved in the absence of radiation. These Noether charges act on the Einstein Yang-Mills phase space canonically and non-linearly. Their action defines a symmetry algebroid which reduces to a symmetry algebra at non-radiative cuts and generalizes the celestial $sw_{1+\infty}$ algebra. The corresponding symmetry bracket is shown to satisfy the Jacobi identity and an interesting cross-product structure, which is analyzed in details.

Asymptotic Higher Spin Symmetries II: Noether Realization in Gravity

In this paper we construct a non-perturbative action of the higher spin symmetry algebra on the gravitational phase space. We introduce a symmetry algebroid $\mathcal{T}$ which allows us to include radiation in an algebraic framework. We show that $\mathcal{T}$ admits a non-linear realization on the asymptotic phase space generated by a Noether charge defined non-perturbatively for all spins. Besides, this Noether charge is conserved in the absence of radiation. Moreover, at non radiative cuts, the algebroid can be restricted to the wedge symmetry algebra studied in ArXiv:2409.12178. The key ingredient for our construction is to consider field and time dependent symmetry parameters constrained to evolve according to equations of motion dual to (a truncation of) the asymptotic Einstein's equations. This result then guarantees that the underlying symmetry algebra is also represented canonically.

Asymptotic Higher Spin Symmetries I: Covariant Wedge Algebra in Gravity

In this paper, we study gravitational symmetry algebras that live on 2-dimensional cuts $S$ of asymptotic infinity. We define a notion of wedge algebra $\mathcal{W}(S)$ which depends on the topology of $S$. For the cylinder $S=\mathbb{C}^*$ we recover the celebrated $Lw_{1+\infty}$ algebra. For the 2-sphere $S^2$, the wedge algebra reduces to a central extension of the anti-self-dual projection of the Poincar\'e algebra. We then extend $\mathcal{W}(S)$ outside of the wedge space and build a new Lie algebra $\mathcal{W}_\sigma(S)$, which can be viewed as a deformation of the wedge algebra by a spin two field $\sigma$ playing the role of the shear at a cut of $\mathscr{I}$. This algebra represents the gravitational symmetry algebra in the presence of a non trivial shear and is characterized by a covariantized version of the wedge condition. Finally, we construct a dressing map that provides a Lie algebra isomorphism between the covariant and regular wedge algebras.

Quantum Null Geometry and Gravity

In this work, we demonstrate that quantizing gravity on a null hypersurface leads to the emergence of a CFT associated with each null ray. This result stems from the ultralocal nature of null physics and is derived through a canonical analysis of the Raychaudhuri equation, interpreted as a constraint generating null time reparametrizations. The CFT exhibits a non-zero central charge, providing a mechanism for the quantum emergence of time in gravitational systems and an associated choice of vacuum state. Our analysis reveals that the central charge quantifies the degrees of freedom along each null ray. Throughout our investigation, the area element of a cut plays a crucial role, necessitating its treatment as a quantum operator due to its dynamic nature in phase space or because of quantum backreaction. Furthermore, we show that the total central charge diverges in a perturbative analysis due to the infinite number of null generators. This divergence is resolved if there is a discrete spectrum for the area form operator. We introduce the concept of `embadons' to denote these localized geometric units of area, the fundamental building blocks of geometry at a mesoscopic quantum gravity scale.

Geometry of Carrollian Stretched Horizons

In this paper, we present a comprehensive toolbox for studying Carrollian stretched horizons, encompassing their geometry, dynamics, symplectic geometry, symmetries, and corresponding Noether charges. We introduce a precise definition of ruled stretched Carrollian structures (sCarrollian structures) on any surface, generalizing the conventional Carrollian structures of null surfaces, along with the notions of sCarrollian connection and sCarrollian stress tensor. Our approach unifies the sCarrollian (intrinsic) and stretched horizon (embedding) perspectives, providing a universal framework for any causal surface, whether timelike or null. We express the Einstein equations in sCarrollian variables and discuss the phase space symplectic structure of the sCarrollian geometry. Through Noether's theorem, we derive the Einstein equation and canonical charge and compute the evolution of the canonical charge along the transverse (radial) direction. The latter can be interpreted as a spin-2 symmetry charge. Our framework establishes a novel link between gravity on stretched horizons and Carrollian fluid dynamics and unifies various causal surfaces studied in the literature, including non-expanding and isolated horizons. We expect this work to provide insights into the hydrodynamical description of black holes and the quantization of null surfaces.

On the Definition of the Spin Charge in Asymptotically-Flat Spacetimes

We propose a solution to a classic problem in gravitational physics consisting of defining the spin associated with asymptotically-flat spacetimes. We advocate that the correct asymptotic symmetry algebra to approach this problem is the generalized-BMS algebra $\textsf{gbms}$ instead of the BMS algebra used hitherto in the literature for which a notion of spin is generically unavailable. We approach the problem of defining the spin charges from the perspective of coadjoint orbits of $\textsf{gbms}$ and construct the complete set of Casimir invariants that determine $\textsf{gbms}$ coadjoint orbits, using the notion of vorticity for $\textsf{gbms}$. This allows us to introduce spin charges for $\textsf{gbms}$ as the generators of area-preserving diffeomorphisms forming its isotropy subalgebra. To elucidate the parallelism between our analysis and the Poincar\'e case, we clarify several features of the Poincar\'e embedding in $\textsf{gbms}$ and reveal the presence of condensate fields associated with the symmetry breaking from $\textsf{gbms}$ to Poincar\'e. We also introduce the notion of a rest frame available only for this extended algebra. This allows us to construct, from the spin generator, the gravitational analog of the Pauli--Luba\'nski pseudo-vector. Finally, we obtain the $\textsf{gbms}$ moment map, which we use to construct the gravitational spin charges and gravitational Casimirs from their dual algebra counterparts.

Renormalization of conformal infinity as a stretched horizon

In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of asymptotically flat spacetime in even dimensions $d\geq 4$. We analyze the most general boundary condition and asymptotic symmetry compatible with Penrose's definition of asymptotic null infinity $\mathscr{I}$ through conformal compactification. Following Penrose's prescription and using a minimal version of the Bondi-Sachs gauge, we show that $\mathscr{I}$ is naturally equipped with a Carrollian stress tensor whose radial derivative defines the asymptotic Weyl tensor. This analysis describes asymptotic infinity as a stretched horizon in the conformally compactified spacetime. We establish that charge aspects conservation can be written as Carrollian Bianchi identities for the asymptotic Weyl tensor. We then provide a covariant renormalization for the asymptotic symplectic potential, which results in a finite symplectic flux and asymptotic charges. The renormalization scheme works even in the presence of logarithmic anomalies.

Carrollian $Lw_{1+\infty}$ representation from twistor space

We construct an explicit realization of the action of the $Lw_{1+\infty}$ loop algebra on fields at null infinity. This action is directly derived by Penrose transform of the geometrical action of $Lw_{1+\infty}$ symmetries in twistor space, ensuring that it forms a representation of the algebra. Finally, we show that this action coincides with the canonical action of $Lw_{1+\infty}$ Noether charges on the asymptotic phase space.

A discrete basis for celestial holography

Celestial holography provides a reformulation of scattering amplitudes in four dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes in terms of conformal correlators of operators on the two dimensional celestial sphere in a basis of boost eigenstates. A basis of {massless particle} states has previously been identified in terms of conformal primary wavefunctions labeled by a boost weight $Δ= 1 + iλ$ with $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. Here we show that a {\it discrete} orthogonal and complete basis exists for $Δ\in \mathbb{Z}$. This new basis consists of a tower of discrete memory and Goldstone observables, which are conjugate to each other and allow to reconstruct gravitational signals belonging to the Schwartz space. We show how generalized dressed states involving the whole tower of Goldstone operators can be constructed and evaluate the higher spin Goldstone 2-point functions. Finally, we recast the tower of higher spin charges providing a representation of the $w_{1+\infty}$ loop algebra (in the same helicity sector) in terms of the new discrete basis.

Null Raychaudhuri: Canonical Structure and the Dressing Time

We initiate a study of gravity focusing on generic null hypersurfaces, non-perturbatively in the Newton coupling. We present an off-shell account of the extended phase space of the theory, which includes the expected spin-2 data as well as spin-0, spin-1 and arbitrary matter degrees of freedom. We construct the charges and the corresponding kinematic Poisson brackets, employing a Beltrami parameterization of the spin-2 modes. We explicitly show that the constraint algebra closes, the details of which depend on the non-perturbative mixing between spin-0 and spin-2 modes. Finally we show that the spin zero sector encodes a notion of a clock, called dressing time, which is dynamical and conjugate to the constraint. It is well-known that the null Raychaudhuri equation describes how the geometric data of a null hypersurface evolve in null time in response to gravitational radiation and external matter. Our analysis leads to three complementary viewpoints on this equation. First, it can be understood as a Carrollian stress tensor conservation equation. Second, we construct spin-$0$, spin-$2$ and matter stress tensors that act as generators of null time reparametrizations for each sector. This leads to the perspective that the null Raychaudhuri equation can be understood as imposing that the sum of CFT-like stress tensors vanishes. Third, we solve the Raychaudhuri constraint non-perturbatively. The solution relates the dressing time to the spin-$2$ and matter boost charge operators. Finally we establish that the corner charge corresponding to the boost operator in the dressing time frame is monotonic. These results show that the notion of an observer can be thought of as emerging from the gravitational degrees of freedom themselves. We briefly mention that the construction offers new insights into focusing conjectures.

Matrix Quantization of Gravitational Edge Modes

Gravitational subsystems with boundaries carry the action of an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra, with potentially profound implications for the quantum theory of gravity. We initiate an investigation into the quantization of this corner symmetry algebra for the phase space of gravity localized to a region bounded by a 2-dimensional sphere. Starting with the observation that the algebra $\mathfrak{sdiff}(S^2)$ of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere admits a deformation to the finite-dimensional algebra $\mathfrak{su}(N)$, we derive novel finite-$N$ deformations for two important subalgebras of the gravitational corner symmetry algebra. Specifically, we find that the area-preserving hydrodynamical algebra $\mathfrak{sdiff}(S^2)\oplus_{\mathcal{L}}\mathbb{R}^{S^2}$ arises as the large-$N$ limit of $\mathfrak{sl}(N,\mathbb C)\oplus\mathbb{R}$ and that the full area-preserving corner symmetry algebra $\mathfrak{sdiff}(S^2)\oplus_{\mathcal{L}}\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})^{S^2}$ is the large-$N$ limit of the pseudo-unitary group $\mathfrak{su}(N,N)$. We find matching conditions for the Casimir elements of the deformed and continuum algebras and show how these determine the value of the deformation parameter $N$ as well as the representation of the deformed algebra associated with a quantization of the local gravitational phase space. Additionally, we present a number of novel results related to the various algebras appearing, including a detailed analysis of the asymptotic expansion of the $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ structure constants, as well as an explicit computation of the full $\mathfrak{diff}(S^2)$ structure constants in the spherical harmonic basis. A consequence of our work is the definition of an area operator which is compatible with the deformation of the area-preserving corner symmetry at finite $N$.

An Inner Product for 4D Quantum Gravity and the Chern-Simons-Kodama State

We demonstrate that reality conditions for the Ashtekar connection imply a non-trivial measure for the inner product of gravitational states in the polarization where the Ashtekar connection is diagonal, and we express the measure as the determinant of a certain first-order differential operator. This result opens the possibility to perform a non-perturbative analysis of the quantum gravity scalar product. In this polarization, the Chern-Simons-Kodama state, which solves the constraints of quantum gravity for a certain factor ordering, and which has de Sitter space as a semiclassical limit, is perturbatively non-normalizable with respect to the naive ve inner product. Our work reopens the question of whether this state might be normalizable when the correct non-perturbative inner product and choice of integration contour are taken into account. As a first step, we perform a semi-classical treatment of the measure by evaluating it on the round three-sphere, viewed as a closed spatial slice of de Sitter. The result is a simple, albeit divergent, infinite product that might serve as a regulator for a more complete treatment of the problem. Additionally, our results suggest deep connections between the problem of computing the norm of the CSK state in quantum gravity and computing the Chern-Simons partition function for a complex group.
