On the equations defining some Hilbert schemes

We work out details of the extrinsic geometry for two Hilbert schemes of some contemporary interest: the Hilbert scheme of two points on the projective plane and the dense open set parametrizing non-planar clusters in the punctual Hilbert scheme of clusters of length four on affine three-space with support at the origin. We find explicit equations in natural projective, respectively affine embeddings for these spaces. In particular, we answer a question of Bernd Sturmfels who asked for a description of the latter space that is amenable to further computations. While the explicit equations we find are controlled in a precise way by the representation theory of SL_3, our arguments also rely on computer algebra.

On the automorphisms of hyperplane sections of generalized Grassmannians

Given a smooth hyperplane section $H$ of a rational homogeneous space $G/P$ with Picard number one, we address the question whether it is always possible to lift an automorphism of $H$ to the Lie group $G$, or more precisely to Aut$(G/P)$. Using linear spaces and quadrics in $H$, we show that the answer is positive up to a few well understood exceptions related to Jordan algebras. When $G/P$ is an adjoint variety, we show how to describe Aut$(H)$ completely, extending results obtained by Prokhorov and Zaidenberg when $G$ is the exceptional group $G_2$.

Proof of a conjecture of Sturmfels, Timme and Zwiernik

We prove a conjecture of Sturmfels, Timme and Zwiernik on the ML-degrees of linear covariance models in algebraic statistics. As in our previous works on linear concentration models, the proof ultimately relies on the computation of certain intersection numbers on the varieties of complete quadrics.

The geometry of the Coble cubic and orbital degeneracy loci

The Coble cubics were discovered more than a century ago in connection with genus two Riemann surfaces and theta functions. They have attracted renewed interest ever since. Recently, they were reinterpreted in terms of alternating trivectors in nine variables. Exploring this relation further, we show how the Hilbert scheme of pairs of points on an abelian surface, and also its Kummer fourfold, a very remarkable hyper-Kähler manifold, can very naturally be constructed in this context. Moreover, we explain how this perspective allows us to describe the group law of an abelian surface, in a strikingly similar way to how the group structure of a plane cubic can be defined in terms of its intersection with lines.

Orbital degeneracy loci II: Gorenstein orbits

In [BFMT17] we introduced orbital degeneracy loci as generalizations of degeneracy loci of morphisms between vector bundles. Orbital degeneracy loci can be constructed from any stable subvariety of a representation of an algebraic group. In this paper we show that their canonical bundles can be conveniently controlled in the case where the affine coordinate ring of the subvariety is Gorenstein. We then study in a systematic way the subvarieties obtained as orbit closures in representations with finitely many orbits, and we determine the canonical bundles of the corresponding orbital degeneracy loci in the Gorenstein cases. Applications are given to the construction of low dimensional varieties with negative or trivial canonical bundle.

Horospherical two-orbit varieties as zero loci

We present geometric realizations of horospherical two-orbit varieties, by showing that their blow-up along the unique closed-invariant orbit is the zero locus of a general section of a homogeneous vector bundle over some auxiliary variety. As an application, we compute the cohomology ring of the $G_2$-variety, including its quantum version. We also consider the Spin$_7$-variety, which deserves a different treatment.

Complete quadrics: Schubert calculus for Gaussian models and semidefinite programming

We establish connections between: the maximum likelihood degree (ML-degree) for linear concentration models, the algebraic degree of semidefinite programming (SDP), and Schubert calculus for complete quadrics. We prove a conjecture by Sturmfels and Uhler on the polynomiality of the ML-degree. We also prove a conjecture by Nie, Ranestad and Sturmfels providing an explicit formula for the degree of SDP. The interactions between the three fields shed new light on the asymptotic behaviour of enumerative invariants for the variety of complete quadrics. We also extend these results to spaces of general matrices and of skew-symmetric matrices.

The double Cayley Grassmannian

We study the smooth projective symmetric variety of Picard number one that compactifies the exceptional complex Lie group G2, by describing it in terms of vector bundles on the spinor variety of Spin(14). We call it the double Cayley Grassmannian because quite remarkably, it exhibits very similar properties to those of the Cayley Grassmannian (the other symmetric variety of type G2), but doubled in the certain sense. We deduce among other things that all smooth projective symmetric varieties of Picard number one are infinitesimally rigid.

Topics on the geometry of homogeneous spaces

This is a survey paper about a selection of results in complex algebraic geometry that appeared in the recent and less recent litterature, and in which rational homogeneous spaces play a prominent r{ô}le. This selection is largely arbitrary and mainly reflects the interests of the author.

Nested varieties of K3 type

Using geometrical correspondences induced by projections and two-steps flag varieties, and a generalization of Orlov's projective bundle theorem, we relate the Hodge structures and derived categories of subvarieties of different Grassmannians. We construct isomorphisms between Calabi-Yau subHodge structures of hyperplane sections of Gr(3,n) and those of other varieties arising from symplectic Grassmannian and/or congruences of lines or planes. Similar results hold conjecturally for Calabi-Yau subcategories: we describe in details the Hodge structures and give partial categorical results relating the K3 Fano hyperplane sections of Gr(3,10) to other Fano varieties such as the Peskine variety. Moreover, we show how these correspondences allow to construct crepant categorical resolutions of the Coble cubics.

The small quantum cohomology of the Cayley Grassmannian

We compute the small cohomology ring of the Cayley Grassmannian, that parametrizes four-dimensional subalgebras of the complexified octonions. We show that all the Gromov-Witten invariants in the multiplication table of the Schubert classes are non negative and deduce Golyshev's conjecture O holds true for this variety. We also check that the quantum cohomology is semisimple and that there exists, as predicted by Dubrovin's conjecture, an exceptional collection of maximal length in the derived category.

Orbital degeneracy loci and applications

Degeneracy loci of morphisms between vector bundles have been used in a wide variety of situations. We introduce a vast generalization of this notion, based on orbit closures of algebraic groups in their linear representations. A preferred class of our orbital degeneracy loci is characterized by a certain crepancy condition on the orbit closure, that allows to get some control on the canonical sheaf. This condition is fulfilled for Richardson nilpotent orbits, and also for partially decomposable skew-symmetric three-forms in six variables. In order to illustrate the efficiency and flexibility of our methods, we construct in both situations many Calabi--Yau manifolds of dimension three and four, as well as a few Fano varieties, including some new Fano fourfolds.

Double spinor Calabi-Yau varieties

Consider the ten-dimensional spinor variety in the projectivization of a half-spin representation of dimension sixteen. The intersection X of two general translates of this variety is a smooth Calabi-Yau fivefold, as well as the intersection Y of their projective duals. We prove that although X and Y are not birationally equivalent, they are derived equivalent and L-equivalent in the sense of Kuznetsov and Shinder.

Gradings of Lie algebras, magical spin geometries and matrix factorizations

We describe a remarkable rank fourtenn matrix factorization of the octic Spin(14)-invariant polynomial on either of its half-spin representations. We observe that this representation can be, in a suitable sense, identified with a tensor product of two octonion algebras. Moreover the matrix factorisation can be deduced from a particular Z-grading of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{e}_8$. Intriguingly, the whole story can be extended to the whole Freudenthal-Tits magic square and yields matrix factorizations on other spin representations, as well as for the degree seven invariant on the space of three-forms in several variables. As an application of our results on Spin(14), we construct a special rank seven vector bundle on a double-octic threefold, that we conjecture to be spherical.

On Fano complete intersections in rational homogeneous varieties

Complete intersections inside rational homogeneous varieties provide interesting examples of Fano manifolds. For example, if $X = \cap_{i=1}^r D_i \subset G/P$ is a general complete intersection of $r$ ample divisors such that $K_{G/P}^* \otimes \mathcal{O}_{G/P}(-\sum_i D_i)$ is ample, then $X$ is Fano. We first classify these Fano complete intersections which are locally rigid. It turns out that most of them are hyperplane sections. We then classify general hyperplane sections which are quasi-homogeneous.

Ulrich and aCM bundles from invariant theory

We use certain special prehomogeneous representations of algebraic groups in order to construct aCM vector bundles, possibly Ulrich, on certain families of hypersurfaces. Among other results, we show that a general cubic hypersurface of dimension seven admitsan indecomposable Ulrich bundle of rank nine, and that a general cubic fourfold admits an unsplit aCM bundle of rank six.

Hyperkahler manifolds from the Tits-Freudenthal square

We suggest a way to associate to each Lie algebra of type G2, D4, F4, E6, E7, E8 a family of polarized hyperkahler fourfolds, constructed as parametrizing certain families of cycles of hyperplane sections of certain homogeneous or quasi-homogeneous varieties. These cycles are modeled on the Legendrian varieties studied by Freudenthal in his geometric approach to the celebrated Tits-Freudenthal magic square of Lie algebras.

The Cayley Grassmannian

We study the projective variety CG parametrizing four dimensional subalgebras of the complex octonions, which we call the Cayley Grass-mannian. We prove that it is a spherical G2-variety with only three orbits that we describe explicitely. Its cohomology ring has a basis of Schubert type classes and we determine the intersection product completely.
