Mellin transformation, propagation, and abelian duality spaces

For arbitrary field coefficients $\mathbb{K}$, we show that $\mathbb{K}$-perverse sheaves on a complex affine torus satisfy the so-called propagation package, i.e., the generic vanishing property and the signed Euler characteristic property hold, and the corresponding cohomology jump loci satisfy the propagation property and codimension lower bound. The main ingredient used in the proof is Gabber-Loeser's Mellin transformation functor for $\mathbb{K}$-constructible complexes on a complex affine torus, and the fact that it behaves well with respect to perverse sheaves. As a concrete topological application of our sheaf-theoretic results, we study homological duality properties of complex algebraic varieties, via abelian duality spaces. We provide new obstructions on abelian duality spaces by showing that their cohomology jump loci satisfy a propagation package. This is then used to prove that complex abelian varieties are the only complex projective manifolds which are abelian duality spaces. We also construct new examples of abelian duality spaces. For example, we show that if a smooth quasi-projective variety $X$ satisfies a certain Hodge-theoretic condition and it admits a proper semi-small map (e.g., a closed embedding or a finite map) to a complex affine torus, then $X$ is an abelian duality space.

Generic vanishing for semi-abelian varieties and integral Alexander modules

We revisit generic vanishing results for perverse sheaves with any field coefficients on a complex semi-abelian variety, and indicate several topological applications. In particular, we obtain finiteness properties for the integral Alexander modules of complex algebraic varieties mapping to semi-abelian varieties. Similar results were recently derived by the authors by using Morse-theoretic arguments.

Plethysm and cohomology representations of external and symmetric products

We prove refined generating series formulae for characters of (virtual) cohomology representations of external products of suitable coefficients, e.g., (complexes of) constructible or coherent sheaves, or (complexes of) mixed Hodge modules on spaces such as (possibly singular) complex quasi-projective varieties. These formulae generalize our previous results for symmetric and alternating powers of such coefficients, and apply also to other Schur functors. The proofs of these results are reduced via an equivariant Künneth formula to a more general generating series identity for abstract characters of tensor powers $\mathcal{V}^{\otimes n}$ of an element $\mathcal{V}$ in a suitable symmetric monoidal category $A$. This abstract approach applies directly also in the equivariant context for spaces with additional symmetries (e.g., finite group actions, finite order automorphisms, resp., endomorphisms), as well as for introducing an abstract plethysm calculus for symmetric sequences of objects in $A$.

Equivariant characteristic classes of external and symmetric products of varieties

We obtain refined generating series formulae for equivariant characteristic classes of external and symmetric products of singular complex quasi-projective varieties. More concretely, we study equivariant versions of Todd, Chern and Hirzebruch classes for singular spaces, with values in delocalized Borel-Moore homology of external and symmetric products. As a byproduct, we recover our previous characteristic class formulae for symmetric products, and obtain new equivariant generalizations of these results, in particular also in the context of twisting by representations of the symmetric group.

Spectral Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of singular hypersurfaces

We introduce spectral Hirzebruch-Milnor classes for singular hypersurfaces. These can be identified with Steenbrink spectra in the isolated singularity case, and may be viewed as their global analogues in general. Their definition uses vanishing cycles of mixed Hodge modules and the Todd class transformation. These are compatible with the pushforward by proper morphisms, and the classes can be calculated by using resolutions of singularities. Formulas for Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of projective hypersurfaces in terms of these classes are given in the case where the multiplicity of a generic hyperplane section is not 1. These formulas using hyperplane sections instead of hypersurface ones are easier to calculate in certain cases. Here we use the Thom-Sebastiani theorem for the underlying filtered $D$-modules of vanishing cycles, from which we can deduce the Thom-Sebastiani type theorem for spectral Hirzebruch-Milnor classes. For the Chern classes after specializing to $y=-1$, we can give a relatively simple formula for the localized Milnor classes, which implies a new formula for the Euler numbers of projective hypersurfaces, using iterated hyperplane sections. Applications to log canonical thresholds and Du Bois singularities are also explained; for instance, the latter can be detected by using Hirzebruch-Milnor classes in the projective hypersurface case.

Motivic zeta functions and infinite cyclic covers

We associate with an infinite cyclic cover of a punctured neighborhood of a simple normal crossing divisor on a complex quasi-projective manifold (assuming certain finiteness conditions are satisfied) a rational function in $K_0({\rm Var}^{\hat μ}_{\mathbb{C}})[\mathbb{L}^{-1}]$, which we call {\it motivic infinite cyclic zeta function}, and show its birational invariance. Our construction is a natural extension of the notion of {\it motivic infinite cyclic covers} introduced by the authors, and as such, it generalizes the Denef-Loeser motivic Milnor zeta function of a complex hypersurface singularity germ.

Spectral pairs, Alexander modules, and boundary manifolds

Let $f: \CN \rightarrow \C $ be a reduced polynomial map, with $D=f^{-1}(0)$, $\U=\CN \setminus D$ and boundary manifold $M=\partial \U$. Assume that $f$ is transversal at infinity and $D$ has only isolated singularities. Then the only interesting non-trivial Alexander modules of $\U$ and resp. $M$ appear in the middle degree $n$. We revisit the mixed Hodge structures on these Alexander modules and study their associated spectral pairs (or equivariant mixed Hodge numbers). We obtain upper bounds for the spectral pairs of the $n$-th Alexander module of $\U$, which can be viewed as a Hodge-theoretic refinement of Libgober's divisibility result for the corresponding Alexander polynomials. For the boundary manifold $M$, we show that the spectral pairs associated to the non-unipotent part of the $n$-th Alexander module of $M$ can be computed in terms of local contributions (coming from the singularities of $D$) and contributions from "infinity".

Hirzebruch-Milnor classes and Steenbrink spectra of certain projective hypersurfaces

We show that the Hirzebruch-Milnor class of a projective hypersurface, which gives the difference between the Hirzebruch class and the virtual one, can be calculated by using the Steenbrink spectra of local defining functions of the hypersurface if certain good conditions are satisfied, e.g. in the case of projective hyperplane arrangements, where we can give a more explicit formula. This is a natural continuation of our previous paper on the Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of complete intersections.

Motivic infinite cyclic covers

We associate with an infinite cyclic cover of a punctured neighborhood of a simple normal crossing divisor on a complex quasi-projective manifold (assuming certain finiteness conditions are satisfied) an element in the Grothendieck ring $K_0({\rm Var}^{\hat μ}_{\mathbb{C}})$, which we call {\it motivic infinite cyclic cover}, and show its birational invariance. Our construction provides a unifying approach for the Denef-Loeser motivic Milnor fibre of a complex hypersurface singularity germ, and the motivic Milnor fiber of a rational function, respectively.

Twisted Alexander invariants of complex hypersurface complements

We define and study twisted Alexander-type invariants of complex hypersurface complements. We investigate torsion properties for the twisted Alexander modules and extend classical local-to-global divisibility results to the twisted setting. In the process, we also study the splitting fields containing the roots of the corresponding twisted Alexander polynomials.

Characteristic Varieties of Hypersurface Complements

We give divisibility results for the (global) characteristic varieties of hypersurface complements expressed in terms of the local characteristic varieties at points along one of the irreducible components of the hypersurface. As an application, we recast old and obtain new finiteness and divisibility results for the classical (infinite cyclic) Alexander modules of complex hypersurface complements. Moreover, for the special case of hyperplane arrangements, we translate our divisibility results for characteristic varieties in terms of the corresponding resonance varieties.

Twisted Novikov homology of complex hypersurface complements

We study the twisted Novikov homology of the complement of a complex hypersurface in general position at infinity. We give a self-contained topological proof of the vanishing (except possibly in the middle degree) of the twisted Novikov homology groups associated to positive cohomology classes of degree one defined on the complement.

Reidemeister Torsion, Peripheral Complex, and Alexander Polynomials of Hypersurface Complements

Let $f:\CN \rightarrow \C $ be a polynomial, which is transversal (or regular) at infinity. Let $\U=\CN\setminus f^{-1}(0)$ be the corresponding affine hypersurface complement. By using the peripheral complex associated to $f$, we give several estimates for the (infinite cyclic) Alexander polynomials of $\U$ induced by $f$, and we describe the error terms for such estimates. The obtained polynomial identities can be further refined by using the Reidemeister torsion, generalizing a similar formula proved by Cogolludo and Florens in the case of plane curves. We also show that the above-mentioned peripheral complex underlies an algebraic mixed Hodge module. This fact allows us to construct mixed Hodge structures on the Alexander modules of the boundary manifold of $\U$.

Characteristic classes of mixed Hodge modules and applications

These notes are an extended version of the authors' lectures at the 2013 CMI Workshop "Mixed Hodge Modules and Their Applications". We give an overview, with an emphasis on applications, of recent developments on the interaction between characteristic class theories for singular spaces and Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules in the complex algebraic context.

Characteristic classes of singular toric varieties

In this paper we compute the motivic Chern classes and homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes of (possibly singular) toric varieties, which in the complete case fit nicely with a generalized Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem. As special cases, we obtain new (or recover well-known) formulae for the Baum-Fulton-MacPherson Todd (or MacPherson-Chern) classes of toric varieties, as well as for the Thom-Milnor L-classes of simplicial projective toric varieties. We present two different perspectives for the computation of these characteristic classes of toric varieties. First, we take advantage of the torus-orbit decomposition and the motivic properties of the motivic Chern and resp. homology Hirzebruch classes to express the latter in terms of dualizing sheaves and resp. the (dual) Todd classes of closures of orbits. This method even applies to torus-invariant subspaces of a given toric variety. The obtained formula is then applied to weighted lattice point counting in lattice polytopes and their subcomplexes, yielding generalized Pick-type formulae. Secondly, in the case of simplicial toric varieties, we compute our characteristic classes by using the Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch theorem of Edidin-Graham in the context of the geometric quotient description of such varieties. In this setting, we define mock Hirzebruch classes of simplicial toric varieties and investigate the difference between the (actual) homology Hirzebruch class and the mock Hirzebruch class. We show that this difference is localized on the singular locus, and we obtain a formula for it in which the contribution of each singular cone is identified explicitly. Finally, the two methods of computing characteristic classes are combined for proving several characteristic class formulae originally obtained by Cappell and Shaneson in the early 1990s.

Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of complete intersections

We prove a new formula for the Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of global complete intersections with arbitrary singularities describing the difference between the Hirzebruch classes and the virtual ones. This generalizes a formula for the Chern-Milnor classes in the hypersurface case that was conjectured by S. Yokura and was proved by A. Parusinski and P. Pragacz. It also generalizes a formula of J. Seade and T. Suwa for the Chern-Milnor classes of complete intersections with isolated singularities.

Intersection spaces, perverse sheaves and type IIB string theory

The method of intersection spaces associates rational Poincaré complexes to singular stratified spaces. For a conifold transition, the resulting cohomology theory yields the correct count of all present massless 3-branes in type IIB string theory, while intersection cohomology yields the correct count of massless 2-branes in type IIA theory. For complex projective hypersurfaces with an isolated singularity, we show that the cohomology of intersection spaces is the hypercohomology of a perverse sheaf, the intersection space complex, on the hypersurface. Moreover, the intersection space complex underlies a mixed Hodge module, so its hypercohomology groups carry canonical mixed Hodge structures. For a large class of singularities, e.g., weighted homogeneous ones, global Poincaré duality is induced by a more refined Verdier self-duality isomorphism for this perverse sheaf. For such singularities, we prove furthermore that the pushforward of the constant sheaf of a nearby smooth deformation under the specialization map to the singular space splits off the intersection space complex as a direct summand. The complementary summand is the contribution of the singularity. Thus, we obtain for such hypersurfaces a mirror statement of the Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne decomposition of the pushforward of the constant sheaf under an algebraic resolution map into the intersection sheaf plus contributions from the singularities.

Characteristic classes of symmetric products of complex quasi-projective varieties

We prove generating series formulae for suitable twisted characteristic classes of symmetric products of a singular complex quasi-projective variety. More concretely, we study homology Hirzebruch classes for motivic coefficients, as well as for complexes of mixed Hodge modules. As a special case, we obtain a generating series formula for the (intersection) homology Hirzebruch classes of symmetric products. In some cases, the latter yields a similar formula for twisted homology L-classes generalizing results of Hirzebruch-Zagier and Moonen. Our methods also apply to the study of Todd classes of (complexes of) coherent sheaves, as well as Chern classes of (complexes of) constructible sheaves, generalizing to arbitrary coefficients results of Moonen and resp. Ohmoto.
