The Lipschitz type of the Geometric Directional Bundle

In this paper we investigate the behaviour of the geometric directional bundles, associated to arbitrary subsets in R^n, under bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms, and give conditions under which their bi-Lipschitz type is preserved. The most general sets we consider satisfy the sequence selection property (SSP) and, consequently, we investigate the behaviour of such sets under bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms as well. In particular, we show that the bi-Lipschitz images of a subanalytic sets generically satisfy the (SSP) property.

Zariski's dimensionality type of singularities. case of dimensionality type 2

In the 1970s O. Zariski introduced a general theory of equisingularity for algebroid and algebraic hypersurfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. His theory builds up on understanding the dimensionality type of hypersurface singularities, notion defined recursively by considering the discriminants loci of successive "generic" corank 1 projections. The theory of singularities of dimensionality type 1, that is the ones appearing generically in codimension 1, was developed by Zariski in his foundational papers on equisingular families of plane curve singularities. In this paper we completely settle the case of dimensionality type 2, by studying Zariski equisingular families of surfaces singularities, not necessarily isolated, in the three-dimensional space.

Lipschitz Stratification of Complex Hypersurfaces in Codimension 2

We show that the Zariski canonical stratification of complex hypersurfaces is locally bi-Lipschitz trivial along the strata of codimension two. More precisely, we study Zariski equisingular families of surface, not necessarily isolated, singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. We show that a natural stratification of such a family given by the singular set and the generic family of polar curves provides a Lipschitz stratification in the sense of Mostowski. In particular, such families are bi-Lipschitz trivial by trivializations obtained by integrating Lipschitz vector fields.

On finiteness theorems of polynomial functions

Let d be a positive integer. We show a finiteness theorem for semialgebraic RL triviality of a Nash family of Nash functions defined on a Nash manifold, generalising Benedetti-Shiota's finiteness theorem for semialgebraic RL equivalence classes appearing in the space of real polynomial functions of degree not exceeding d. We also prove Fukuda's claim, Theorem 1.3, and its semialgebraic version Theorem 1.4, on the finiteness of the local R types appearing in the space of real polynomial functions of real polynomial function germs of degree not exceeding d.

Stabilisation of geometric directional bundle for a subanalytic set

In a previous paper we have introduced the notion of geometric directional bundle of a singular space, in order to introduce global bi-Lipschitz invariants. Then we have posed the question of whether or not the geometric directional bundle is stabilised as an operation acting on singular spaces. In this paper we give a positive answer in the case where the singular spaces are subanalytic sets, thus providing a new invariant associated with the subanalytic sets.

Concentration of curvature and Lipschitz invariants of holomorphic functions of two variables

By combining analytic and geometric viewpoints on the concentration of the curvature of the Milnor fibre, we prove that Lipschitz homeomorphisms preserve the zones of multi-scale curvature concentration as well as the gradient canyon structure of holomorphic functions of two variables. This yields the first new Lipschitz invariants after those discovered by Henry and Parusinski in 2003.

Algebraic Stratified General Position and Transversality

The method of Whitney interpolation is used to construct, for any real or complex projective algebraic variety, a stratified submersive family of self-maps that yields stratified general position and transversality theorems for semialgebraic subsets..

Rank two jump loci for solvmanifolds and Lie algebras

We consider representation varieties in $SL_2$ for lattices in solvable Lie groups, and representation varieties in $sl_2$ for finite-dimensional Lie algebras. Inside them, we examine depth 1 characteristic varieties for solvmanifolds, respectively resonance varieties for cochain Differential Graded Algebras of Lie algebras. We prove a general result that leads, in both cases, to the complete description of the analytic germs at the origin, for the corresponding embedded rank 2 jump loci.

Validity proof of Lazard's method for CAD construction

In 1994 Lazard proposed an improved method for cylindrical algebraic decomposition (CAD). The method comprised a simplified projection operation together with a generalized cell lifting (that is, stack construction) technique. For the proof of the method's validity Lazard introduced a new notion of valuation of a multivariate polynomial at a point. However a gap in one of the key supporting results for his proof was subsequently noticed. In the present paper we provide a complete validity proof of Lazard's method. Our proof is based on the classical parametrized version of Puiseux's theorem and basic properties of Lazard's valuation. This result is significant because Lazard's method can be applied to any finite family of polynomials, without any assumption on the system of coordinates. It therefore has wider applicability and may be more efficient than other projection and lifting schemes for CAD.

Arcwise Analytic Stratification, Whitney Fibering Conjecture and Zariski Equisingularity

In this paper we show Whitney's fibering conjecture in the real and complex, local analytic and global algebraic cases. For a given germ of complex or real analytic set, we show the existence of a stratification satisfying a strong (real arc-analytic with respect to all variables and analytic with respect to the parameter space) trivialization property along each stratum. We call such a trivialization arc-wise analytic and we show that it can be constructed under the classical Zariski algebro-geometric equisingularity assumptions. Using a slightly stronger version of Zariski equisingularity, we show the existence of Whitney's stratified fibration, satisfying the conditions (b) of Whitney and (w) of Verdier. Our construction is based on Puiseux with parameter theorem and a generalization of Whitney interpolation. For algebraic sets our construction gives a global stratification. We also give several applications of arc-wise analytic trivialization, mainly to the stratification theory and the equisingularity of analytic set and function germs. In the real algebraic case, for an algebraic family of projective varieties, we show that Zariski equisingularity implies local triviality of the weight filtration.

Unwinding spirals

We show that there is no bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^2$ that maps a spiral with a sub-exponential decay of winding radii to an unwinded arc. This result is sharp as shows an example of a logarithmic spiral.

Notes on (SSP) sets

Sampaio recently showed that bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic subanalytic sets have bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic tangent cones. The purpose of this note is to show that Sampaio's method works as well for (SSP) sets, that is, the above result is characteristic for (SSP) sets, a much wider class.

Nuij type pencils of hyperbolic polynomials

Nuij's theorem states that if a polynomial $p\in \mathbb{R}[z]$ is hyperbolic (i.e., has only real roots) then $p+sp'$ is also hyperbolic for any $s\in \mathbb{R}$. We study other perturbations of hyperbolic polynomials of the form $p_a(z,s): =p(z) +\sum_{k=1}^d a_ks^kp^{(k)}(z)$. We give a full characterization of those $a= (a_1, \dots, a_d) \in \mathbb{R}^d$ for which $p_a(z,s)$ is a pencil of hyperbolic polynomials. We give also a full characterization of those $a= (a_1, \dots, a_d) \in \mathbb{R}^d$ for which the associated families $p_a(z,s)$ admit universal determinantal representations. In fact we show that all these sequences come from special symmetric Toeplitz matrices.

On the Geometry of sets satisfying the Sequence Selection Property

In this paper we study fundamental directional properties of sets under the assumption of condition (SSP) (introduced in a previous paper). We show several transversality theorems in the singular case and an (SSP)-structure preserving theorem. As an illustration, our transversality results are used to prove several facts concerning complex analytic varieties. The (SSP)-property is most suitable for understanding transversality in the Lipschitz category. This property is shared by a large class of sets, in particular by subanalytic sets or by definable sets in an o-minimal structure.

Directional properties of sets definable in o-minimal structures

In a former paper the first and third authors introduced the notion of direction set for a subset of R^n, and showed that the dimension of the common direction set of two subanalytic subsets, called directional dimension, is preserved by a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism, provided that their images are also subanalytic. In this paper we give a generalisation of the above result to sets definable in an o-minimal structure on an arbitrary real closed field. More precisely, we first prove our main theorem and discuss in detail directional properties in the case of an Archimedean real closed field, and then we give a proof in the case of a general real closed field. In addition, related to our main result, we show the existence of special polyhedra in some Euclidean space, illustrating that the bi-Lipschitz equivalence does not always imply the existence of a definable one.

The kissing dimension of subanalytic sets is preserved by a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism

Let A subset R^n be a set-germ at 0 in R^n such that 0 is in the closure of A. Let D(A) denote the set of all directions of A at 0 in R^n. Let A, B subsets R^n be subanalytic set-germs at 0 in R^n such that 0 belongs to their closure. We study the problem of whether the dimension of the common direction set, called their kissing dimension, is preserved by a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism. We show that in general it is not preserved. We prove that the kissing dimension is preserved if the images of the subanalytic sets under consideration are also subanalytic. In particular, if two subanalytic set-germs are bi-Lipschitz equivalent, then their direction sets must have the same dimension.

Tame nonsmooth inverse mapping theorems

We give several versions of local and global inverse mapping theorem for tame non necessarily smooth, mappings. Here tame mapping means a mapping which is subanalytic or, more generally, definable in some o-minimal structure. Our sufficient conditions are formulated in terms of various properties (convexity, positivity of some principal minors, contractiblity) of the space of Jacobi's matrices at smooth points.
