Carving out the Space of Open-String S-matrix

In this paper, we explore the open string amplitude's dual role as a space-time S-matrix and a 1D CFT correlation function. We pursue this correspondence in two directions. First, beginning with a general disk integrand dressed with a Koba-Nielsen factor, we demonstrate that exchange symmetry for the factorization residue of the amplitude forces the integrand to be expandable on SL(2,R) conformal blocks. Furthermore, positivity constraints associated with unitarity imply the SL(2,R) blocks must come in linear combinations for which the Virasoro block emerges at the "kink" in the space of solutions. In other words, Virasoro symmetry arises at the boundary of consistent factorization. Next, we consider the low energy EFT description, where unitarity manifests as the EFThedron in which the couplings must live. The existence of a worldsheet description implies, through the Koba-Nielsen factor, monodromy relations which impose algebraic identities amongst the EFT couplings. We demonstrate at finite derivative order that the intersection of the "monodromy plane" and the EFThedron carves out a tiny island for the couplings, which continues to shrink as the derivative order is increased. At the eighth derivative order, on a three-dimensional monodromy plane, the intersection fixes the width of this island to around 1.5$\%$ (of $ζ(3)$) and 0.2$\%$ (of $ζ(5)$) with respect to the super string answer. This leads us to conjecture that the four-point open superstring amplitude can be completely determined by the geometry of the intersection of the monodromy plane and the EFThedron.

UV consistency conditions for CHY integrands

We extend on-shell bootstrap methods from spacetime amplitudes to the worldsheet objects of the CHY formalism. We find that the integrands corresponding to tree-level non-linear sigma model, Yang-Mills and $(DF)^2$ theory are determined by demanding enhanced UV scaling under BCFW shifts. Back in spacetime, we also find that $(DF)^2$ theory is fixed by gauge invariance/UV scaling and simple locality assumptions.

UV considerations on scattering amplitudes in a web of theories

The scattering predictions of a web of theories including Yang-Mills (YM), gravity, bi-adjoint scalar, the non-linear sigma model (NLSM), Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBI-VA) and the special Galileon (sGal) form a class of special objects with two fascinating properties: they are related by the double-copy procedure, and they can be defined purely by on-shell constraints. We expand on both of these properties. First we show that NLSM tree-level amplitudes are fully determined by imposing color-dual structure together with cyclic invariance and locality. We then consider how hard-scaling can be used to constrain the predictions of these theories, as opposed to the usual soft-scaling. We probe the UV by generalizing the familiar BCFW shift off-shell to a novel single hard limit. We show that UV scalings are sufficient to fully constrain: 1. Bi-adjoint doubly-ordered amplitudes, assuming locality; 2. NLSM and BI, assuming locality and unitarity; 3. Special Galileon, assuming locality, unitarity, and a UV bound for the general Galileon vertex. We see how potentially distinct aspects of this UV behavior can be understood and unified via double-copy relations. Surprisingly, we find evidence that assuming unitarity for these theories may not be necessary, and can emerge via UV considerations and locality alone. These results complete the observations that, like IR considerations, UV scaling is sufficient to fully constrain a wide range of tree-level amplitudes, for both gauge, gravity, and effective field theories.

Uniqueness from locality and BCFW shifts

We introduce a BCFW shift which can be used to recursively build the full Yang-Mills tree-level amplitude as a function of polarization vectors. Furthermore, in line with the recent results of arXiv:1612.02797, we conjecture that the Yang-Mills tree-level scattering amplitude is uniquely fixed by locality and demanding the usual asymptotic behavior under a sufficient number of shifts. Unitarity therefore emerges from locality and constructability. We prove this statement at the leading order in the soft expansion.

Uniqueness from gauge invariance and the Adler zero

In this paper we provide detailed proofs for some of the uniqueness results presented in arXiv:1612.02797. We show that: (1) Yang-Mills and General Relativity tree-level amplitudes are completely determined by gauge invariance in $n-1$ particles, with minimal assumptions on the singularity structure, (2) scalar non-linear sigma model and Dirac-Born-Infeld tree-level amplitudes are fixed by imposing full locality and the Adler zero condition (vanishing in the single soft limit) on $n-1$ particles. We complete the proofs by showing uniqueness order by order in the single soft expansion for Yang-Mills and General Relativity, and the double soft expansion for NLSM and DBI. We further present evidence for a greater conjecture regarding Yang-Mills amplitudes, that a maximally constrained gauge invariance alone leads to both locality and unitarity, without any assumptions on the existence of singularities. In this case the solution is not unique, but a linear combination of amplitude numerators.

Scattering Amplitudes from Soft Theorems and Infrared Behavior

We prove that soft theorems uniquely fix scattering amplitudes in a wide range of theories, including Yang-Mills, gravity, the non-linear sigma model, Dirac-Born-Infeld, dilaton effective theories, extended theories like NLSM$\oplus ϕ^3$ or BI$\oplus$YM, as well as some higher derivative corrections to these theories. We conjecture the same is true even when imposing more general soft behavior, simply by assuming the existence of soft operators, or by imposing gauge invariance/the Adler zero only up to a finite order in soft expansions. Besides reproducing known amplitudes, this analysis reveals a new higher order correction to the NLSM, and two interesting facts: the subleading theorem for the dilaton, and the subsubleading theorem for DBI follow automatically from the more leading theorems. These results provide motivation that asymptotic symmetries contain enough information to fully fix a holographic S-matrix.

Locality and Unitarity from Singularities and Gauge Invariance

We conjecture that the leading two-derivative tree-level amplitudes for gluons and gravitons can be derived from gauge invariance together with mild assumptions on their singularity structure. Assuming locality (that the singularities are associated with the poles of cubic graphs), we prove that gauge-invariance in just (n-1) particles together with minimal power-counting uniquely fixes the amplitude. Unitarity in the form of factorization then follows from locality and gauge invariance. We also give evidence for a stronger conjecture: assuming only that singularities occur when the sum of a subset of external momenta go on-shell, we show in non-trivial examples that gauge-invariance and power-counting demand a graph structure for singularities. Thus both locality and unitarity emerge from singularities and gauge invariance. Similar statements hold for theories of Goldstone bosons like the non-linear sigma model and Dirac-Born-Infeld, by replacing the condition of gauge invariance with an appropriate degree of vanishing in soft limits.

Higher-spin massless S-matrices in four-dimensions

On-shell, analytic S-matrix elements in massless theories are constructed from a finite set of primitive three-point amplitudes, which are fixed by Poincare invariance up to an overall numerical constant. We classify \emph{all} such three-point amplitudes in four-dimensions. Imposing the simplest incarnation of Locality and Unitarity on four-particle amplitudes constructed from these three-particle amplitudes rules out all but an extremely small subset of interactions among higher-spin massless states. Notably, the equivalence principle, and the Weinberg-Witten theorem, are simple corollaries of this principle. Further, no massless states with helicity larger than two may consistently interact with massless gravitons. Chromodynamics, electrodynamics, Yukawa and $ϕ^3$-theories are the only marginal and relevant interactions between massless states. Finally, we show that supersymmetry naturally emerges as a consistency condition on four-particle amplitudes involving spin-3/2 states, which must always interact gravitationally.

Gravitons, Bose-symmetry, and Bonus-scaling

Modern on-shell S-matrix methods may dramatically improve our understanding of perturbative quantum gravity, but current foundations of on-shell techniques for General Relativity still rely on off-shell Feynman diagram analysis. Here, we complete the fully on-shell proof of Ref.~\cite{ST} that the recursion relations of Britto, Cachazo, Feng, and Witten (BCFW) apply to General Relativity tree amplitudes. We do so by showing that the surprising requirement of "bonus" $z^{-2}$ scaling under a BCFW shift directly follows from Bose-symmetry. Moreover, we show that amplitudes in generic theories subjected to BCFW deformations of identical particles necessarily scale as $z^{\rm even}$. When applied to the color ordered expansions of Yang-Mills, this directly implies the improved behavior under non-adjacent gluon shifts. Using the same analysis, three-dimensional gravity amplitudes scale as $z^{-4}$, compared to the $z^{-1}$ behavior for conformal Chern-Simons matter theory.
