Perturbation theory for a non-equilibrium stationary state of a one-dimensional stochastic wave equation

We address the problem of constructing a non-equilibrium stationary state for a one-dimensional stochastic Klein-Gordon wave equation with non-linearity, using perturbation theory. The linear theory is reviewed, but with the linear equations of motion including an additional potential term which emerges in the renormalization of the perturbation expansion for the state corresponding to the non-linear equations of motion. The potential is the solution to a fixed point equation. Low order terms in the expansion for the two-point function are determined.

Estimates on Functional Integrals of Quantum Mechanics and Non-Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

We provide a unified method for obtaining upper bounds for certain functional integrals appearing in quantum mechanics and non-relativistic quantum field theory, functionals of the form $E\left[\exp(A_T)\right]$, the (effective) action $A_T$ being a function of particle trajectories up to time $T$. The estimates in turn yield rigorous lower bounds for ground state energies, via the Feynman-Kac formula. The upper bounds are obtained by writing the action for these functional integrals in terms of stochastic integrals. The method is first illustrated in familiar quantum mechanical settings: for the hydrogen atom, for a Schrödinger operator with $1/|x|^2$ potential with small coupling, and, with a modest adaptation of the method, for the harmonic oscillator. We then present our principal applications of the method, in the settings of non-relativistic quantum field theories for particles moving in a quantized Bose field, including the optical polaron and Nelson models.

Ground state properties of multi-polaron systems

We summarize our recent results on the ground state energy of multi-polaron systems. In particular, we discuss stability and existence of the thermodynamic limit, and we discuss the absence of binding in the case of large Coulomb repulsion and the corresponding binding-unbinding transition. We also consider the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation to the ground state energy and we study radial symmetry of the ground state density.

Persistent energy flow for a stochastic wave equation model in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics

We consider a one-dimensional partial differential equation system modeling heat flow around a ring. The system includes a Klein-Gordon wave equation for a field satisfying spatial periodic boundary conditions, as well as Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic differential equations with finite rank dissipation and stochastic driving terms modeling heat baths. There is an energy flow around the ring. In the case of a linear field with different (fixed) bath temperatures, the energy flow can persist even when the interaction with the baths is turned off. A simple example is given.

Binding, Stability, and Non-binding of Multi-polaron Systems

The binding of polarons, or its absence, is an old and subtle topic. After defining the model we state some recent theorems of ours. First, the transition from many-body collapse to the existence of a thermodynamic limit for N polarons occurs precisely at U=2α, where U is the electronic Coulomb repulsion and αis the polaron coupling constant. Second, if U is large enough, there is no multi-polaron binding of any kind. We also discuss the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation to the ground state energy, which is valid for large α. Finally, we derive exact results, not reported before, about the one-dimensional toy model introduced by E. P. Gross.

Stationary state solutions for a gently stochastic nonlinear wave equation with ultraviolet cutoffs

We consider a non-linear, one-dimensional wave equation system with finite-dimensional stochastic driving terms and with weak dissipation. A stationary process that solves the system is used to model steady-state non-equilibrium heat flow through a non-linear medium. We show existence and uniqueness of invariant measures for the system modified with ultraviolet cutoffs, and we obtain estimates for the field covariances with respect to these measures, estimates that are uniform in the cutoffs. Finally, we discuss the limit of these measures as the ultraviolet cutoffs are removed.

Stability and Absence of Binding for Multi-Polaron Systems

We resolve several longstanding problems concerning the stability and the absence of multi-particle binding for N\geq 2 polarons. Fröhlich's 1937 polaron model describes non-relativistic particles interacting with a scalar quantized field with coupling \sqrtα, and with each other by Coulomb repulsion of strength U. We prove the following: (i) While there is a known thermodynamic instability for U<2α, stability of matter does hold for U>2α, that is, the ground state energy per particle has a finite limit as N\to\infty. (ii) There is no binding of any kind if U exceeds a critical value that depends on αbut not on N. The same results are shown to hold for the Pekar-Tomasevich model.

Bi-Polaron and N-Polaron Binding Energies

The binding of polarons, or its absence, is an old and subtle topic. Here we prove two things rigorously. First, the transition from many-body collapse to the existence of a thermodynamic limit for N polarons occurs precisely at U=2α, where U is the electronic Coulomb repulsion and αis the polaron coupling constant. Second, if U is large enough, there is no multi-polaron binding of any kind. Considering the known fact that there is binding for some U>2α, these conclusions are not obvious and their proof has been an open problem for some time.

On an isoperimetric inequality for a Schrodinger operator depending on the curvature of a loop

Let C be a smooth closed curve of length 2 Pi in R^3, and let k(s) be its curvature, regarded as a function of arc length. We associate with this curve the one-dimensional Schrodinger operator H_C = -d^2/ds^2 + k^2 acting on the space of square integrable 2 Pi - periodic functions. A natural conjecture is that the lowest spectral value e(C) is bounded below by 1 for any C (this value is assumed when C is a circle). We study a family of curves {C} that includes the circle and for which e(C)=1 as well. We show that the curves in this family are local minimizers, i.e., e(C) can only increase under small perturbations leading away from the family. To our knowledge, the full conjecture remains open.

On the Cauchy problem for a dynamical Euler's elastica

The dynamics for a thin, closed loop inextensible Euler's elastica moving in three dimensions are considered. The equations of motion for the elastica include a wave equation involving fourth order spatial derivatives and a second order elliptic equation for its tension. A Hasimoto transformation is used to rewrite the equations in convenient coordinates for the space and time derivatives of the tangent vector. A feature of this elastica is that it exhibits time-dependent monodromy. A frame parallel-transported along the elastica is in general only quasi-periodic, resulting in time-dependent boundary conditions for the coordinates. This complication is addressed by a gauge transformation, after which a contraction mapping argument can be applied. Local existence and uniqueness of elastica solutions are established for initial data in suitable Sobolev spaces.

Exponential Convergence to Non-Equilibrium Stationary States in Classical Statistical Mechanics

We continue the study of a model for heat conduction consisting of a chain of non-linear oscillators coupled to two Hamiltonian heat reservoirs at different temperatures. We establish existence of a Liapunov function for the chain dynamics and use it to show exponentially fast convergence of the dynamics to a unique stationary state. Ingredients of the proof are the reduction of the infinite dimensional dynamics to a finite-dimensional stochastic process as well as a bound on the propagation of energy in chains of anharmonic oscillators.

Asymptotic Behavior of Thermal Non-Equilibrium Steady States for a Driven Chain of Anharmonic Oscillators

We consider a model of heat conduction which consists of a finite nonlinear chain coupled to two heat reservoirs at different temperatures. We study the low temperature asymptotic behavior of the invariant measure. We show that, in this limit, the invariant measure is characterized by a variational principle. We relate the heat flow to the variational principle. The main technical ingredient is an extension of Freidlin-Wentzell theory to a class of degenerate diffusions.
