Asymptotics of random Betti tables

The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we present a conjecture to the effect that the ranks of the syzygy modules of a smooth projective variety become normally distributed as the positivity of the embedding line bundle grows. Then, in an attempt to render the conjecture plausible, we prove a result suggesting that this is in any event the typical behavior from a probabilistic point of view. Specifically, we consider a "random" Betti table with a fixed number of rows, sampled according to a uniform choice of Boij-Soderberg coefficients. We compute the asymptotics of the entries as the length of the table goes to infinity, and show that they become normally distributed with high probability.

Asymptotic syzygies of algebraic varieties

This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of the syzygies of a smooth projective variety X as the positivity of the embedding line bundle grows. We prove that as least as far as grading is concerned, the minimal resolution of the ideal of X has a surprisingly uniform asymptotic shape: roughly speaking, generators eventually appear in almost all degrees permitted by Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. This suggests in particular that a widely-accepted intuition derived from the case of curves -- namely that syzygies become simpler as the degree of the embedding increases -- may have been misleading. For Veronese embeddings of projective space, we give an effective statement that in some cases is optimal, and conjecturally always is so. Finally, we propose a number of questions and open problems concerning asymptotic syzygies of higher-dimensional varieties.

Multiplier ideals via Mather discrepancy

We define a version of multiplier ideals, the Mather multiplier ideals, on a variety with arbitrary singularities, using the Mather discrepancy and the Jacobian ideal. In this context we prove a relative vanishing theorem, thus obtaining restriction theorems and a subadditivity and summation theorems. The Mather multiplier ideals also satisfy a Skoda type result. As an application, we obtain a Briancon-Skoda type formula for the integral closures of ideals on a variety with arbitrary singularities.

Log canonical thresholds on varieties with bounded singularities

We consider pairs (X,A), where X is a variety with klt singularities and A is a formal product of ideals on X with exponents in a fixed set that satisfies the Descending Chain Condition. We also assume that X has (formally) bounded singularities, in the sense that it is, formally locally, a subvariety in a fixed affine space defined by equations of bounded degree. We prove in this context a conjecture of Shokurov, predicting that the set of log canonical thresholds for such pairs satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition.

Pseudoeffective and nef classes on abelian varieties

The cones of divisors and curves defined by various positivity conditions on a smooth projective variety have been the subject of a great deal of work in algebraic geometry, and by now they are quite well understood. However the analogous cones for cycles of higher codimension and dimension have started to come into focus only recently. The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the phenomena that can occur by working out the picture fairly completely in a couple of simple but non-trivial cases. Specifically, we study cycles of arbitrary codimension on the self-product of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication, as well as two dimensional cycles on the product of a very general abelian surface with itself. Already one finds various non-classical behavior, for instance nef cycles that fail to be pseudoeffective: this answers a question raised in 1964 by Grothendieck in correspondence with Mumford. We also propose a substantial number of open problems for further investigation.

Extension of sections via adjoint ideals

The paper contains theorems on extending sections of line bundles from divisors to the ambient space, inspired by various results of Siu, Kawamata, and especially Hacon-McKernan and Takayama. Applications are given to basepoint-freeness, to the invariance of analogues of plurigenera and of part of the boundary of the pseudo-effective cone in families, and to a simplified approach towards part of the results used for proving the existence of flips by Hacon-McKernan.

Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties

Shokurov conjectured that the set of all log canonical thresholds on varieties of bounded dimension satisfies the ascending chain condition. In this paper we prove that the conjecture holds for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties and, more generally, on locally complete intersection varieties and on varieties with quotient singularities.

Generically finite morphisms and formal neighborhoods of arcs

We show that given a dominant morphism between two smooth varieties of the same dimension, the induced morphism between the formal neighborhoods of two arcs on these varieties is a closed embedding, of codimension given by the order of vanishing along the ramification subscheme.

Global division of cohomology classes via injectivity

We note that the vanishing and injectivity theorems of Kollár and Esnault-Viehweg can be used to give a quick algebraic proof of a strengthening of the Ein-Lazarsfeld Skoda-type division theorem for global sections of adjoint line bundles vanishing along suitable multiplier ideal sheaves, and to extend it to higher cohomology classes as well. For global sections, this is also a slightly more general statement of the algebraic translation of an analytic result of Siu. Along the way we write down an injectivity statement for multiplier ideals, and its standard consequences.

Jet schemes and singularities

We give a self-contained presentation of the basic results on jet schemes of singular varieties. Applications are given to invariants of singularities, such as minimal log discrepancies. We simplify our older approach to Inversion of adjunction for locally complete intersection varieties, and we prove a more general result for arbitrary Q-Gorenstein varieties embeded in nonsingular varieties (this statement has been proved independently also by Kawakita) .

Restricted volumes and base loci of linear series

We introduce and study the restricted volume of a divisor along a subvariety. Our main result is a description of the irreducible components of the augmented base locus by the vanishing of the restricted volume.

Invariants of singularities of pairs

Let X be a smooth complex variety and Y be a closed subvariety of X, or more generally, a closed subscheme of X. We are interested in invariants attached to the singularities of the pair (X, Y). We discuss various methods to construct such invariants, coming from the theory of multiplier ideals, D-modules, the geometry of the space of arcs and characteristic p techniques. We present several applications of these invariants to algebra, higher dimensional birational geometry and to singularities.

Asymptotic invariants of base loci

The purpose of this paper is to define and study systematically some asymptotic invariants associated to base loci of line bundles on smooth projective varieties. We distinguish an open dense subset of the real big cone, called the stable locus, consisting of the set of classes on which the asymptotic base locus is locally constant. The asymptotic invariants define continuous functions on the big cone, whose vanishing characterizes, roughly speaking, the unstable locus. We show that for toric varieties at least, there exists a polyhedral decomposition of the big cone on which these functions are polynomial.

Asymptotic invariants of line bundles

Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension d. It is classical that ample line bundles on X satisfy many beautiful geometric, cohomological, and numerical properties that render their behavior particularly tractable. By contrast, examples due to Cutkosky and others have led to the common impression that the linear series associated to non-ample divisors are in general mired in pathology. However starting with fundamental work of Fujita, Nakayama, and Tsuji, it has recently become apparent that arbitrary effective (or "big") divisors in fact display a surprising number of properties analogous to those of ample line bundles. The key is to study the properties in question from an asymptotic perspective. At the same time, many interesting questions and open problems remain. The purpose of the present expository note is to give an invitation to this circle of ideas. In the hope that this informal overview might serve as a jumping off point for the technical literature in the area, we sketch many examples but provide no proofs. We focus on one particular invariant -- the "volume" of a line bundle -- that measures the rate of growth of the number of sections of powers of the bundle in question.

Contact loci in arc spaces

We study loci of arcs on a smooth variety defined by order of contact with a fixed subscheme. Specifically, we establish a Nash-type correspondence showing that the irreducible components of these loci arise from (intersections of) exceptional divisors in a resolution of singularities. We show also that these loci account for all the valuations determined by irreducible cylinders in the arc space. Along the way, we recover in an elementary fashion-without using motivic integration-results of the third author relating singularities to arc spaces. Moreover, we extend these results to give a jet-theoretic interpretation of multiplier ideals.

Jumping Coefficients of Multiplier Ideals

We study in this paper some local invariants attached via multiplier ideals to an effective divisor or ideal sheaf on a smooth complex variety. First considered (at least implicitly) by Libgober and by Loeser and Vaquie, these jumping coefficients consist of an increasing sequence of rational numbers beginning with the log canonical threshold of the divisor or ideal in question. They encode interesting geometric and algebraic information, and we show that they arise naturally in several different contexts. Given a polynomial f having only isolated singularities, results of Varchenko, Loeser and Vaquie imply that if ξis a jumping number of f = 0 lying in the interval (0, 1], then -ξis a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of f. We adapt an argument of Kollar to show prove that this holds also when the singular locus of f has positive dimension. In a more algebraic direction, we show that the number of such jumping coefficients bounds the uniform Artin-Rees number of the principal ideal (f) in the sense of Huneke: in the case of isolated singularities, this in turn leads to bounds involving the Milnor and Tyurina numbers of f . Along the way, we establish a general result relating multiplier to Jacobian ideals. We also explore the extension of these ideas to the setting of graded families of ideals. The paper contains many concrete examples.
