Cosmological implications of f(T, B) gravity: constraints from recent observations

In this work, we examine the theoretical framework of modified teleparallel gravity with the inclusion of the boundary term in the action and investigate its cosmological implications by considering the power-law model $f(T, B) = -T + α(-B)^β$, with the aim of addressing the late-time accelerated expansion and the dark energy. In this context, $T$ denotes the torsion scalar and $B$ represents the boundary term, whose presence allows for departures from standard teleparallel dynamics and provides a unified description that connects torsion and curvature-based formulations, reproducing $f(T)$ and $f(R)$ gravity in appropriate limits. The viability of the model is assessed by confronting its theoretical predictions with observational data while constraining the cosmological and model parameters through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis using cosmic chronometers (CC), the Pantheon Plus sample (PPS), and the DESI baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) Data Release 2 (DR2) datasets, and comparing its performance with the standard $Λ$CDM model. The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) analysis shows that the combined CC+PPS dataset strongly favors the $f(T, B)$ model, suggesting an improved phenomenological fit to late-time observations relative to $Λ$CDM. Our result further shows an alleviation of H0 tensions, although a dedicated analysis is required to establish its full statistical significance. Furthermore, the background cosmological quantities indicate that the model exhibits a dynamical phantom-divide crossing while remaining consistent with late-time observations and yielding a viable expansion history and characteristic dark energy evolution.

Exploring the stability of $f(Q)$ cosmology near general relativity limit with different connections

In this work, we study cosmological spacetime configurations in $f(Q)$ gravity with nonvanishing symmetric teleparallel connections. It is known that the spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic connections can be classified into three sets. Focusing on two of those, we explore the stability of cosmological background evolution near the general relativity regime across radiation, matter, dark energy, and geometric dark energy dominated eras. Our results show that for the standard connection set 1 the general relativity regime can be realized in two ways and both exhibit stable behavior throughout all evolutionary epochs. Conversely, for the alternative connection set 2 the trivial general relativity limit is stable, while the nontrivial option exhibits stability during the radiation era and marginal stability during the matter era, but for the dark energy and geometric dark energy eras our results are inconclusive. Furthermore, we discuss the general conditions on the function $f(Q)$ that physically viable models should obey, and point out that for a generic $f(Q)$ the alternative connection sets 2 and 3 are prone to trigger a sudden singularity. This can happen even near the otherwise good looking general relativity regime, as we demonstrate by an explicit numerical example. Hence the alternative configurations could be problematic already on the background level.

Stability of symmetric teleparallel scalar-tensor cosmologies with alternative connections

In symmetric teleparallel geometry the curvature and torsion tensors are assumed to vanish identically, while the dynamics of gravity is encoded by nonmetricity. Here the spatially homogeneous and isotropic connections that can accompany flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric come in three sets. As the trivial set has received much attention, we focus on the two alternative sets which introduce an extra degree of freedom into the equations. Working in the context of symmetric teleparallel scalar-tensor gravity with generic nonminimal coupling and potential, we show that the extra free function in the connection can not play the role of dark matter nor dark energy, but it drastically alters the scalar field behavior. We determine the restrictions on the model functions which permit the standard cosmological scenario of successive radiation, dust matter, and scalar potential domination eras to be stable. However, the alternative connections also introduce a rather general possibility of the system meeting a singularity in finite time.

Evolutionary behaviour of cosmological parameters with dynamical system analysis in f (Q, T) gravity

We have investigated the accelerating behaviour of the universe in $f(Q,T)$ gravity in an isotropic and homogeneous space-time. We have initially derive the dynamical parameters in the general form of $f(Q,T)=αQ^{m}+βT$ [Xu et al., Eur. Phys. J. C, \textbf{79}, 708 (2019)] and then split it into two cases (i) one with $m=1$ and the (ii) other with $β=0$. In the first case, it reduces to the linear form of the functional $f(Q,T)$ and second case leads to the higher power of the nonmetricity $Q$. In an assumed form of the hyperbolic scale factor, the models are constructed and its evolutionary behaviours are studied. The geometrical parameters as well the equation of state parameter are obtained and found to be in the preferred range of the cosmological observations. Marginal variation has been noticed in the behaviour of $ω$ and $ω_{eff}$ at present time. The violation of strong energy conditions in both the cases are shown. The dynamical system analysis for the models has been performed.

Hamilton's equations in the covariant teleparallel equivalent of general relativity

We present Hamilton's equations for the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR), which is a reformulation of general relativity based on a curvatureless, metric compatible, and torsionful connection. For this, we consider the Hamiltonian for TEGR obtained through the vector, antisymmetric, symmetric and trace-free, and trace irreducible decomposition of the phase space variables. We present the Hamiltonian for TEGR in the covariant formalism for the first time in the literature, by considering a spin connection depending on Lorentz matrices. We introduce the mathematical formalism necessary to compute Hamilton's equations in both Weitzenbock gauge and covariant formulation, where for the latter we must introduce new fields: Lorentz matrices and their associated momenta. We also derive explicit relations between the conjugate momenta of the tetrad and the conjugate momenta for the metric that are traditionally defined in GR, which are important to compare both formalisms.

Dynamical system analysis for accelerating models in non-metricity $f(Q)$ gravity

Two accelerating cosmological models are presented in symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$ gravity, $Q$ be the non-metricity. The models are constructed based on the assumptions of two different functional forms of $f(Q)$ and a dynamically changing nature of the deceleration parameter that shows transition at $t=2n\pm\sqrt{\frac{4n^2+1}{3}}$, $n$ being a positive constant. In both the models, the equation of state parameter for the dark energy in $f(Q)$ gravity becomes a dynamical quantity and crosses the phantom divide line. The violation of the strong energy condition and the null energy condition at late times are also established. In addition, the dynamical system analysis has been performed and three critical points in each model are identified. In each model, at least one stable node has been observed. To strengthen further, the stability analysis using homogeneous linear perturbations has been performed to ensure the stability of the models.

Rip cosmological models in extended symmetric teleparallel gravity

In this paper we have investigated some rip cosmological models in an extended symmetric teleparallel gravity theory. We consider the form $f(Q,T)=aQ^m+bT$ in the Einstein-Hilbert action and expressed the field equations and the dynamical parameters in terms of the non-metricity $Q$. Three rip models such as Little Rip, Big Rip and Pseudo Rip are presented. The energy conditions and the cosmographic parameters are derived and analysed for all these models.

Matter Bounce Scenario and the Dynamical aspects in f(Q,T) Gravity

In the context of the late time cosmic acceleration phenomenon, many geometrically modified theories of gravity have been proposed in recent times. In this paper, we have investigated the role of a recently proposed extension of symmetric teleparallel gravity dubbed as f(Q,T) gravity in getting viable cosmological models, where Q and T respectively denote the non-metricity and the trace of energy momentum tensor. We stress upon the mathematical simplification of the formalism in the f(Q,T) gravity and derived the dynamical parameters in more general form in terms of the Hubble parameter. We considered two different cosmological models mimicking non-singular matter bounce scenario. Since energy conditions play a vital role in providing bouncing scenario, we have analyzed different possible energy conditions to show that strong energy condition and null energy condition be violated in this theory. The models considered in the work are validated through certain cosmographic tests and stability analysis.

Model parameters in the context of late time cosmic acceleration in $f(Q,T)$ gravity

The dynamical aspects of some accelerating models are investigated in the framework of an extension of symmetric teleparllel gravity dubbed as f(Q,T) gravity. In this gravity theory, the usual Ricci tensor in the geometrical action is replaced by a functional f(Q,T) where Q is the non-metricity and T is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. Two different functional forms are considered in the present work. In order to model the Universe, we have considered a signature flipping deceleration parameter simulated by a hybrid scale factor (HSF). The dynamical parameters of the model are derived and analysed. We discuss the role of the parameter space in getting viable cosmological models. It is found that, the models may be useful as suitable geometrical alternatives to the usual dark energy approach.
