Outline to Story: Fine-grained Controllable Story Generation from Cascaded Events

Large-scale pretrained language models have shown thrilling generation capabilities, especially when they generate consistent long text in thousands of words with ease. However, users of these models can only control the prefix of sentences or certain global aspects of generated text. It is challenging to simultaneously achieve fine-grained controllability and preserve the state-of-the-art unconditional text generation capability. In this paper, we first propose a new task named "Outline to Story" (O2S) as a test bed for fine-grained controllable generation of long text, which generates a multi-paragraph story from cascaded events, i.e. a sequence of outline events that guide subsequent paragraph generation. We then create dedicate datasets for future benchmarks, built by state-of-the-art keyword extraction techniques. Finally, we propose an extremely simple yet strong baseline method for the O2S task, which fine tunes pre-trained language models on augmented sequences of outline-story pairs with simple language modeling objective. Our method does not introduce any new parameters or perform any architecture modification, except several special tokens as delimiters to build augmented sequences. Extensive experiments on various datasets demonstrate state-of-the-art conditional story generation performance with our model, achieving better fine-grained controllability and user flexibility. Our paper is among the first ones by our knowledge to propose a model and to create datasets for the task of "outline to story". Our work also instantiates research interest of fine-grained controllable generation of open-domain long text, where controlling inputs are represented by short text.

Implicit Deep Latent Variable Models for Text Generation

Deep latent variable models (LVM) such as variational auto-encoder (VAE) have recently played an important role in text generation. One key factor is the exploitation of smooth latent structures to guide the generation. However, the representation power of VAEs is limited due to two reasons: (1) the Gaussian assumption is often made on the variational posteriors; and meanwhile (2) a notorious "posterior collapse" issue occurs. In this paper, we advocate sample-based representations of variational distributions for natural language, leading to implicit latent features, which can provide flexible representation power compared with Gaussian-based posteriors. We further develop an LVM to directly match the aggregated posterior to the prior. It can be viewed as a natural extension of VAEs with a regularization of maximizing mutual information, mitigating the "posterior collapse" issue. We demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of our models in various text generation scenarios, including language modeling, unaligned style transfer, and dialog response generation. The source code to reproduce our experimental results is available on GitHub.

X-ray total scattering study of regular and magic-size nanoclusters of cadmium sulphide

Four kinds of magic-size CdS clusters and two different regular CdS quantum dots have been studied by x-ray total scattering technique and pair distribution function method. Results for the regular CdS quantum dots could be modelled as a mixed phase of atomic structures based on the two bulk crystalline phases, which is interpreted as representing the effects of stacking disorder. However, the results for the magic-size clusters were significantly different. On one hand, the short-range features in the pair distribution function reflect the bulk, indicating that these structures are based on the same tetrahedral coordination found in the bulk phases (and therefore excluding new types of structures such as cage-like arrangements of atoms). But on the other hand, the longer- range atomic structure clearly does not reflect the layer structures found in the bulk and the regular quantum dots. We compare the effects of two ligands, phenylacetic acid and oleic acid, showing that in two cases the ligand has little effect on the atomic structure of the magic-size nanocluster and in another it has a significant effect.

Short-time evolution of Lagrangian velocity gradient correlations in isotropic turbulence

We show by direct numerical simulation (DNS) that the Lagrangian cross correlation of velocity gradients in homogeneous isotropic turbulence increases at short times, whereas its auto-correlation decreases. Kinematic considerations allow to show that two invariants of the turbulent velocity field determine the short-time velocity gradient correlations. In order to get a more intuitive understanding of the dynamics for longer times, heuristic models are proposed involving the combined action of local shear and rotation. These models quantitatively reproduce the effects and disentangle the different physical mechanisms leading to the observations in the DNS.

Reduction of mean-square advection in turbulent passive scalar mixing

Direct numerical simulation data show that the variance of the coupling term in passive scalar advection by a random velocity field is smaller than it would be if the velocity and scalar fields were statistically independent. This effect is analogous to the "depression of nonlinearity" in hydrodynamic turbulence. We show that the trends observed in the numerical data are qualitatively consistent with the predictions of closure theories related to Kraichnan's direct interaction approximation. The phenomenon is demonstrated over a range of Prandtl numbers. In the inertial-convective range the depletion is approximately constant with respect to wavenumber. The effect is weaker in the Batchelor range.

Time-reversibility of Navier-Stokes turbulence and its implication for subgrid scale models

Among existing subgrid scale models for large-eddy simulation (LES) some are time-reversible in the sense that the dynamics evolve backwards in time after a transformation $\bm u \rightarrow -\bm u$ at every point in space. In practice, reversible subgrid models reduce the numerical stability of the simulations since the effect of the subgrid scales is no longer strictly dissipative. This lack of stability constitutes often a criterion to reject this kind of models. The aim of this paper is to examine whether time-reversibility can constitute a criterion that a subgrid model has to fulfill, or has not to. Thereto we investigate by direct numerical simulation the time-dependence of the kinetic energy of the resolved scales when the velocity is reversed in all or part of the lengthscales of the turbulent flow. These results are compared with results from existing LES subgrid models. It is argued that the criterion of time-reversibility to assess subgrid models is incompatible with the main underlying assumption of LES.
