Dirac Nodal Lines and Nodal Loops in a Topological Kagome Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The intertwining of charge order, superconductivity and band topology has promoted the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) family of materials to the center of attention in condensed matter physics. Underlying those mysterious macroscopic properties such as giant anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and chiral charge density wave is their nontrivial band topology. While there have been numerous experimental and theoretical works investigating the nontrivial band structure and especially the van Hove singularities, the exact topological phase of this family remains to be clarified. In this work, we identify CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a Dirac nodal line semimetal based on the observation of multiple Dirac nodal lines and loops close to the Fermi level. Combining photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory, we identify two groups of Dirac nodal lines along $k_z$ direction and one group of Dirac nodal loops in the A-H-L plane. These nodal loops are located at the Fermi level within the instrumental resolution limit. Importantly, our first-principle analyses indicate that these nodal loops may be a crucial source of the mysterious giant AHC observed. Our results not only provide a clear picture to categorize the band structure topology of this family of materials, but also suggest the dominant role of topological nodal loops in shaping their transport behavior.

Unlimited Neighborhood Interaction for Heterogeneous Trajectory Prediction

Understanding complex social interactions among agents is a key challenge for trajectory prediction. Most existing methods consider the interactions between pairwise traffic agents or in a local area, while the nature of interactions is unlimited, involving an uncertain number of agents and non-local areas simultaneously. Besides, they treat heterogeneous traffic agents the same, namely those among agents of different categories, while neglecting people's diverse reaction patterns toward traffic agents in ifferent categories. To address these problems, we propose a simple yet effective Unlimited Neighborhood Interaction Network (UNIN), which predicts trajectories of heterogeneous agents in multiple categories. Specifically, the proposed unlimited neighborhood interaction module generates the fused-features of all agents involved in an interaction simultaneously, which is adaptive to any number of agents and any range of interaction area. Meanwhile, a hierarchical graph attention module is proposed to obtain category-to-category interaction and agent-to-agent interaction. Finally, parameters of a Gaussian Mixture Model are estimated for generating the future trajectories. Extensive experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate a significant performance improvement of our method over the state-of-the-art methods.

Crossover between bulk and interface photovoltaic mechanisms in ferroelectric vertical heterostructure

Bulk photovoltaic (BPVE) effect in crystals lacking inversion symmetry offers great potential for optoelectronic applications due to its unique properties such as above bandgap photovoltage and switchable photocurrent. Because of their large spontaneous polarizations, ferroelectric materials are ideal platforms for studying BPVE. However, identifying the origin of experimentally observed photovoltaic response is often challenging due to the entanglement between bulk and interface effects, leading to much debate in the field. This issue is particularly pronounced in vertical heterostructures, where the two effects are comparable. Here we report a crossover between bulk- and interface-dominant response in vertical BiFeO3 heterostructures when changing the photon energy. We show that well above-bandgap excitation leads to bulk photovoltaic response, but band-edge excitation requires interface band bending to separate the photocarriers. Our findings not only help to clarify contradicting reports in the literature, but also lay the ground for a deeper understanding of ferroelectric photovoltaic effect and its applications in various devices.

Doping evolution of superconductivity, charge order and band topology in hole-doped topological kagome superconductors Cs(V$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)$_3$Sb$_5$

The newly discovered Kagome superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit superconductivity, charge order, and band topology simultaneously. To explore the intricate interplay between the superconducting and charge orders, we investigate the doping evolution of superconductivity, charge-density-wave (CDW) order, and band topology in doped topological kagome superconductors Cs(V$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)$_3$Sb$_5$ where the Ti-dopant introduces hole-like charge carriers. Despite the absence of the CDW phase transition in doped compounds even for the lowest doping level of $x=0.047$, the superconductivity survives in all doped samples with enhanced critical temperatures. The high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal that the Ti-dopant in the kagome plane lowers the chemical potential, pushing the van Hove singularity (VHS) at $M$ point above the Fermi level. First-principle simulations corroborate the doping evolution of the band structure observed in ARPES, and affirm that the CDW instability does not occur once the VHS is pushed above the Fermi level, explaining the absence of the CDW ordering in our doped samples Cs(V$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)$_3$Sb$_5$. Our results demonstrate a competition between the CDW and superconducting orders in the kagome-metal superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, although the superconductivity is likely inconsequential of the CDW order.

Emergence of Quantum Confinement in Topological Kagome Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ family

Quantum confinement is a restriction on the motion of electrons in a material to specific region, resulting in discrete energy levels rather than continuous energy bands. In certain materials quantum confinement could dramatically reshape the electronic structure and properties of the surface with respect to the bulk. Here, in the recently discovered kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) family of materials, we unveil the dominant role of quantum confinement in determining their surface electronic structure. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurement and density-functional theory simulation, we report the observations of two-dimensional quantum well states due to the confinement of bulk electron pocket and Dirac cone to the nearly isolated surface layer. The theoretical calculations on the slab model also suggest that the ARPES observed spectra are almost entirely contributed by the top two layers. Our results not only explain the disagreement of band structures between the recent experiments and calculations, but also suggest an equally important role played by quantum confinement, together with strong correlation and band topology, in shaping the electronic properties of this family of materials.

Probe Skyrmion phases and dynamics in MnSi via the magnetoelectric effect in a composite configuration

We have developed a sensitive technique to probe the magnetic skyrmion phases and dynamics by employing the interfacial coupling effect in a magnetoelectric composite configuration. The study on a MnSi single crystal sample using this technique provides clear evidences for the skyrmion lattice phase and coexistence of skyrmion and conical phase. Above the Curie temperature TC, a region with strong spin fluctuation is revealed as well. By tuning the density of Skyrmion or disorder, a transition from the skyrmion lattice to skyrmion-conical coexisting phase is observed. The observation is in good agreement with a theoretical model which predicts the dissipation behavior in the coexistence phase.

TREATED:Towards Universal Defense against Textual Adversarial Attacks

Recent work shows that deep neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial examples. Much work studies adversarial example generation, while very little work focuses on more critical adversarial defense. Existing adversarial detection methods usually make assumptions about the adversarial example and attack method (e.g., the word frequency of the adversarial example, the perturbation level of the attack method). However, this limits the applicability of the detection method. To this end, we propose TREATED, a universal adversarial detection method that can defend against attacks of various perturbation levels without making any assumptions. TREATED identifies adversarial examples through a set of well-designed reference models. Extensive experiments on three competitive neural networks and two widely used datasets show that our method achieves better detection performance than baselines. We finally conduct ablation studies to verify the effectiveness of our method.

Field-induced quantum spin disordered state in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na2Co2TeO6 (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have found a field-induced spin disordered state in an applied magnetic field range of 7.5 T < B (vertical to b-axis) < 10.5 T. The INS spectra were also simulated to tentatively extract the exchange interactions. As a 3d-magnet with a field-induced disordered state on an effective spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice, NCTO expands the Kitaev model to 3d compounds, promoting further interests on the spin-orbital effect in quantum magnets.

GeneAnnotator: A Semi-automatic Annotation Tool for Visual Scene Graph

In this manuscript, we introduce a semi-automatic scene graph annotation tool for images, the GeneAnnotator. This software allows human annotators to describe the existing relationships between participators in the visual scene in the form of directed graphs, hence enabling the learning and reasoning on visual relationships, e.g., image captioning, VQA and scene graph generation, etc. The annotations for certain image datasets could either be merged in a single VG150 data-format file to support most existing models for scene graph learning or transformed into a separated annotation file for each single image to build customized datasets. Moreover, GeneAnnotator provides a rule-based relationship recommending algorithm to reduce the heavy annotation workload. With GeneAnnotator, we propose Traffic Genome, a comprehensive scene graph dataset with 1000 diverse traffic images, which in return validates the effectiveness of the proposed software for scene graph annotation. The project source code, with usage examples and sample data is available at https://github.com/Milomilo0320/A-Semi-automatic-Annotation-Software-for-Scene-Graph, under the Apache open-source license.

$LnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_3 (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy)$: Heavy Lanthanides on Spin-1/2 Kagome Magnets

The spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets are key prototype materials for studying frustrated magnetism. Three isostructural kagome antiferromagnets LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) have been successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method. LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ adopts space group $P\overline{3}m1$ and features the layered Cu-kagome lattice with lanthanide Ln$^{3+}$ cations sitting at the center of the hexagons. Although heavy lanthanides (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) in LnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$ provide a large effective magnetic moment and ferromagnetic-like spin correlations compared to light-lanthanides (Nd, Sm, Eu) analogues, Cu-kagome holds an antiferromagnetically ordered state at around 17 K like YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy effect on field-induced magnon condensation in kagome antiferromagnet $α-Cu_3Mg(OH)_6Br_2$

We performed a comprehensive electron spin resonance, magnetization and heat capacity study on the field-induced magnetic phase transitions in the kagome antiferromagnet $α-Cu_3Mg(OH)_6Br_2$. With the successful preparation of single crystals, we mapped out the magnetic phase diagrams under the $c$-axis and $ab$-plane directional magnetic fields $B$. For $B\|c$, the three-dimensional (3D) magnon Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is evidenced by the power law scaling of the transition temperature, $T_c\propto (B_c-B)^{2/3}$. For $B\|ab$, the transition from the canted antiferromagetic (CAFM) state to the fully polarized (FP) state is a crossover rather than phase transition, and the characteristic temperature has a significant deviation from the 3D BEC scaling. The different behaviors of the field-induced magnetic transitions for $B\|c$ and $B\|ab$ could result from the Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya (DM) interaction with the DM vector along the $c$-axis, which preserves the $c$-axis directional spin rotation symmetry and breaks the spin rotation symmetry when $B\|ab$. The 3D magnon BEC scaling for $B\|c$ is immune to the off-stoichiometric disorder in our sample $α-Cu_{3.26}Mg_{0.74}(OH)_6Br_2$. Our findings have the potential to shed light on the investigations of the magnetic anisotropy and disorder effects on the field-induced magnon BEC in the quantum antiferromagnet.

Practical Relative Order Attack in Deep Ranking

Recent studies unveil the vulnerabilities of deep ranking models, where an imperceptible perturbation can trigger dramatic changes in the ranking result. While previous attempts focus on manipulating absolute ranks of certain candidates, the possibility of adjusting their relative order remains under-explored. In this paper, we formulate a new adversarial attack against deep ranking systems, i.e., the Order Attack, which covertly alters the relative order among a selected set of candidates according to an attacker-specified permutation, with limited interference to other unrelated candidates. Specifically, it is formulated as a triplet-style loss imposing an inequality chain reflecting the specified permutation. However, direct optimization of such white-box objective is infeasible in a real-world attack scenario due to various black-box limitations. To cope with them, we propose a Short-range Ranking Correlation metric as a surrogate objective for black-box Order Attack to approximate the white-box method. The Order Attack is evaluated on the Fashion-MNIST and Stanford-Online-Products datasets under both white-box and black-box threat models. The black-box attack is also successfully implemented on a major e-commerce platform. Comprehensive experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, revealing a new type of ranking model vulnerability.

Unified Regularity Measures for Sample-wise Learning and Generalization

Fundamental machine learning theory shows that different samples contribute unequally both in learning and testing processes. Contemporary studies on DNN imply that such sample difference is rooted on the distribution of intrinsic pattern information, namely sample regularity. Motivated by the recent discovery on network memorization and generalization, we proposed a pair of sample regularity measures for both processes with a formulation-consistent representation. Specifically, cumulative binary training/generalizing loss (CBTL/CBGL), the cumulative number of correct classiffcations of the training/testing sample within training stage, is proposed to quantize the stability in memorization-generalization process; while forgetting/mal-generalizing events, i.e., the mis-classification of previously learned or generalized sample, are utilized to represent the uncertainty of sample regularity with respect to optimization dynamics. Experiments validated the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approaches for mini-batch SGD optimization. Further applications on training/testing sample selection show the proposed measures sharing the unified computing procedure could benefit for both tasks.

Enriching Local and Global Contexts for Temporal Action Localization

Effectively tackling the problem of temporal action localization (TAL) necessitates a visual representation that jointly pursues two confounding goals, i.e., fine-grained discrimination for temporal localization and sufficient visual invariance for action classification. We address this challenge by enriching both the local and global contexts in the popular two-stage temporal localization framework, where action proposals are first generated followed by action classification and temporal boundary regression. Our proposed model, dubbed ContextLoc, can be divided into three sub-networks: L-Net, G-Net and P-Net. L-Net enriches the local context via fine-grained modeling of snippet-level features, which is formulated as a query-and-retrieval process. G-Net enriches the global context via higher-level modeling of the video-level representation. In addition, we introduce a novel context adaptation module to adapt the global context to different proposals. P-Net further models the context-aware inter-proposal relations. We explore two existing models to be the P-Net in our experiments. The efficacy of our proposed method is validated by experimental results on the THUMOS14 (54.3\% at tIoU@0.5) and ActivityNet v1.3 (56.01\% at tIoU@0.5) datasets, which outperforms recent states of the art. Code is available at https://github.com/buxiangzhiren/ContextLoc.

Adversarial Attack and Defense in Deep Ranking

Deep Neural Network classifiers are vulnerable to adversarial attack, where an imperceptible perturbation could result in misclassification. However, the vulnerability of DNN-based image ranking systems remains under-explored. In this paper, we propose two attacks against deep ranking systems, i.e., Candidate Attack and Query Attack, that can raise or lower the rank of chosen candidates by adversarial perturbations. Specifically, the expected ranking order is first represented as a set of inequalities, and then a triplet-like objective function is designed to obtain the optimal perturbation. Conversely, an anti-collapse triplet defense is proposed to improve the ranking model robustness against all proposed attacks, where the model learns to prevent the positive and negative samples being pulled close to each other by adversarial attack. To comprehensively measure the empirical adversarial robustness of a ranking model with our defense, we propose an empirical robustness score, which involves a set of representative attacks against ranking models. Our adversarial ranking attacks and defenses are evaluated on MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, CUB200-2011, CARS196 and Stanford Online Products datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that a typical deep ranking system can be effectively compromised by our attacks. Nevertheless, our defense can significantly improve the ranking system robustness, and simultaneously mitigate a wide range of attacks.

Video Imprint

A new unified video analytics framework (ER3) is proposed for complex event retrieval, recognition and recounting, based on the proposed video imprint representation, which exploits temporal correlations among image features across video frames. With the video imprint representation, it is convenient to reverse map back to both temporal and spatial locations in video frames, allowing for both key frame identification and key areas localization within each frame. In the proposed framework, a dedicated feature alignment module is incorporated for redundancy removal across frames to produce the tensor representation, i.e., the video imprint. Subsequently, the video imprint is individually fed into both a reasoning network and a feature aggregation module, for event recognition/recounting and event retrieval tasks, respectively. Thanks to its attention mechanism inspired by the memory networks used in language modeling, the proposed reasoning network is capable of simultaneous event category recognition and localization of the key pieces of evidence for event recounting. In addition, the latent structure in our reasoning network highlights the areas of the video imprint, which can be directly used for event recounting. With the event retrieval task, the compact video representation aggregated from the video imprint contributes to better retrieval results than existing state-of-the-art methods.

Heat Transport in Herbertsmithite: Can a Quantum Spin Liquid Survive Disorder?

Arguably the most favorable situation for spins to enter the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state is when they sit on a kagome lattice. No consensus has been reached in theory regarding the true ground state of this promising platform. The experimental efforts, relying mostly on one archetypal material ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, have also led to diverse possibilities. Apart from subtle interactions in the Hamiltonian, there is the additional degree of complexity associated with disorder in the real material ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ that haunts most experimental probes. Here we resort to heat transport measurement, a cleaner probe in which instead of contributing directly, the disorder only impacts the signal from the kagome spins. For ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ and a related QSL candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, we observed no contribution by any spin excitation nor any field-induced change to the thermal conductivity. These results impose different constraints on various scenarios about the ground state of these two kagome compounds: while a gapped QSL, or certain quantum paramagnetic state other than a QSL, is compatible with our results, a gapless QSL must be dramatically modified by the disorder so that gapless spin excitations are localized.

Pressure-enhanced ferromagnetism in layered CrSiTe3 flakes

The research on van der Waals (vdW) layered ferromagnets have promoted the development of nanoscale spintronics and applications. However, low-temperature ferromagnetic properties of these materials greatly hinder their applications. Here, we report pressure-enhanced ferromagnetic behaviours in layered CrSiTe3 flakes revealed by high-pressure magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurement. At ambient pressure, CrSiTe3 undergoes a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition at 32.8 K, with a negligible hysteresis loop, indicating a soft ferromagnetic behaviour. Under 4.6 GPa pressure, the soft ferromagnet changes into hard one, signalled by a rectangular hysteretic loop with remnant magnetization at zero field. Interestingly, with further increasing pressure, the coercive field (H_c) dramatically increases from 0.02 T at 4.6 GPa to 0.17 T at 7.8 GPa, and the Curie temperature (T_c^h: the temperature for closing the hysteresis loop) also increases from ~36 K at 4.6 GPa to ~138 K at 7.8 GPa. The influences of pressure on exchange interactions are further investigated by density functional theory calculations, which reveal that the in-plane nearest-neighbor exchange interaction and magneto-crystalline anisotropy increase simultaneously as pressure increases, leading to increased H_c and T_c^h in experiments. The effective interaction between magnetic couplings and external pressure offers new opportunities for both searching room-temperature layered ferromagnets and designing pressure-sensitive magnetic functional devices.
