Power Control for Multigroup Multicast Cell-Free Massive MIMO Downlink

We consider a multigroup multicast cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system with short-term power constraints. In particular, the normalized conjugate beamforming scheme is adopted at each access point (AP) to keep the downlink power strictly under the power budget regardless of small scale fading. In the considered scenario, APs multicast signals to multiple groups of users whereby users in the same group receive the same message. Under this setup, we are interested in maximizing the minimum achievable rate of all groups, commonly known as the max-min fairness problem, which has not been studied before in this context. To solve the considered problem, we first present a bisection method which in fact has been widely used in previous studies for cell-free massive MIMO, and then propose an accelerated projected gradient (APG) method. We show that the proposed APG method outperforms the bisection method requiring lesser run time while still achieving the same objective value. Moreover, the considered power control scheme provides significantly improved performance and more fairness among the users compared to the equal power allocation scheme.

Accelerated Projected Gradient Method for the Optimization of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Downlink

We consider the downlink of a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system where large number of access points (APs) simultaneously serve a group of users. Two fundamental problems are of interest, namely (i) to maximize the total spectral efficiency (SE), and (ii) to maximize the minimum SE of all users. As the considered problems are non-convex, existing solutions rely on successive convex approximation to find a sub-optimal solution. The known methods use off-the-shelf convex solvers, which basically implement an interior-point algorithm, to solve the derived convex problems. The main issue of such methods is that their complexity does not scale favorably with the problem size, limiting previous studies to cell-free massive MIMO of moderate scales. Thus the potential of cell-free massive MIMO has not been fully understood. To address this issue, we propose an accelerated projected gradient method to solve the considered problems. Particularly, the proposed solution is found in closed-form expressions and only requires the first order information of the objective, rather than the Hessian matrix as in known solutions, and thus is much more memory efficient. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed solution achieves far less run-time, compared to other second-order methods.

Achievable Rate Optimization for MIMO Systems with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a radical new technology that can shape the radio wave propagation in wireless communication systems and offers a great variety of possible performance and implementation gains. Motivated by this, in this paper we study the achievable rate optimization for a multi-stream multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system equipped with an RIS, and formulate a joint optimization problem of the covariance matrix of the transmitted signal and the RIS elements. To solve this problem, we propose an iterative optimization algorithm that is based on the projected gradient method (PGM). We derive the step size that guarantees the convergence of the proposed algorithm and we define a backtracking line search to improve its convergence rate. Furthermore, we introduce the total free space path loss (FSPL) ratio of the indirect and direct links as a first-order measure of the applicability of an RIS in the considered communication system. Simulation results show that the proposed PGM achieves the same achievable rate as a state-of-the-art benchmark scheme, but with a significantly lower computational complexity. In addition, it is demonstrated that the RIS application is particularly suitable to increase the achievable rate in an indoor environment, as in this case even a small number of RIS elements is sufficient to provide a substantial achievable rate gain.

Optimization of RIS-aided MIMO Systems via the Cutoff Rate

The main difficulty concerning optimizing the mutual information (MI) in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication systems with discrete signaling is the inability to formulate this optimization problem in an analytically tractable manner. Therefore, we propose to use the cutoff rate (CR) as a more tractable metric for optimizing the MI and introduce two optimization methods to maximize the CR, assuming perfect knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). The first method is based on the projected gradient method (PGM), while the second method is derived from the principles of successive convex approximation (SCA). Simulation results show that the proposed optimization methods significantly enhance the CR and the corresponding MI.

On the Achievable Sum-rate of the RIS-aided MIMO Broadcast Channel

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a new technology that can shape the radio wave propagation and thus offers a great variety of possible performance and implementation gains. Motivated by this, we investigate the achievable sum-rate optimization in a broadcast channel (BC) that is equipped with an RIS. We exploit the well-known duality between the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) BC and multiple-access channel (MAC) to derive an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm which optimizes the users' covariance matrices and the RIS phase shifts in the dual MAC. The optimal users' covariance matrices are obtained by a dual decomposition method in which each iteration is solved in closed-form. The optimal RIS phase shifts are also computed using a derived closed-form expression. Furthermore, we present a computational complexity analysis for the proposed AO algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed AO algorithm can provide significant achievable sum-rate gains in a BC.

Secrecy Rate Maximization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMOME Wiretap Channels

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has gained tremendous attention recently as a disruptive technology for beyond 5G networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of secrecy rate maximization for an IRS-assisted Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output multi-antenna-eavesdropper (MIMOME) wiretap channel (WTC). In this context, we aim to jointly optimize the input covariance matrix and the IRS phase shifts to maximize the achievable secrecy rate of the considered system. To solve the formulated problem which is non-convex, we propose an iterative method based on the block successive maximization (BSM), where each iteration is done in closed form. More specifically, we maximize a lower bound on the achievable secrecy rate to update the input covariance matrix for fixed phase shifts, and then maximize the (exact) achievable secrecy rate to update phase shifts for a given input covariance. We consider the total free space path loss (FSPL) in this system to emphasize the first-order measure of the applicability of the IRS in the considered communication system. We present a convergence proof and the associated complexity analysis of the proposed algorithm. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to a known solution, and also to show the effect of different parameters of interest on the achievable secrecy rate of the IRS-assisted MIMOME WTC.

On the Secrecy Capacity of MIMO Wiretap Channels: Convex Reformulation and Efficient Numerical Methods

This paper presents novel numerical approaches to finding the secrecy capacity of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel subject to multiple linear transmit covariance constraints, including sum power constraint, per antenna power constraints and interference power constraint. An analytical solution to this problem is not known and existing numerical solutions suffer from slow convergence rate and/or high per-iteration complexity. Deriving computationally efficient solutions to the secrecy capacity problem is challenging since the secrecy rate is expressed as a difference of convex functions (DC) of the transmit covariance matrix, for which its convexity is only known for some special cases. In this paper we propose two low-complexity methods to compute the secrecy capacity along with a convex reformulation for degraded channels. In the first method we capitalize on the accelerated DC algorithm which requires solving a sequence of convex subproblems, for which we propose an efficient iterative algorithm where each iteration admits a closed-form solution. In the second method, we rely on the concave-convex equivalent reformulation of the secrecy capacity problem which allows us to derive the so-called partial best response algorithm to obtain an optimal solution. Notably, each iteration of the second method can also be done in closed form. The simulation results demonstrate a faster convergence rate of our methods compared to other known solutions. We carry out extensive numerical experiments to evaluate the impact of various parameters on the achieved secrecy capacity.

On the Secrecy Rate under Statistical QoS Provisioning for RIS-Assisted MISO Wiretap Channel

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted radio is considered as an enabling technology with great potential for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications standard. The achievable secrecy rate (ASR) is one of the most fundamental metrics to evaluate the capability of facilitating secure communication for RIS-assisted systems. However, the definition of ASR is based on Shannon's information theory, which generally requires long codewords and thus fails to quantify the secrecy of emerging delay-critical services. Motivated by this, in this paper we investigate the problem of maximizing the secrecy rate under a delay-limited quality-of-service (QoS) constraint, termed as the effective secrecy rate (ESR), for an RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) wiretap channel subject to a transmit power constraint. We propose an iterative method to find a stationary solution to the formulated non-convex optimization problem using a block coordinate ascent method (BCAM), where both the beamforming vector at the transmitter as well as the phase shifts at the RIS are obtained in closed forms in each iteration. We also present a convergence proof, an efficient implementation, and the associated complexity analysis for the proposed method. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed optimization algorithm converges significantly faster that an existing solution. The simulation results also confirm that the secrecy rate performance of the system with stringent delay requirements reduce significantly compared to the system without any delay constraints, and that this reduction can be significantly mitigated by an appropriately placed large-size RIS.

On the Optimality of the Stationary Solution of Secrecy Rate Maximization for MIMO Wiretap Channel

To achieve perfect secrecy in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian wiretap channel (WTC), we need to find its secrecy capacity and optimal signaling, which involves solving a difference of convex functions program known to be non-convex for the non-degraded case. To deal with this, a class of existing solutions have been developed but only local optimality is guaranteed by standard convergence analysis. Interestingly, our extensive numerical experiments have shown that these local optimization methods indeed achieve global optimality. In this paper, we provide an analytical proof for this observation. To achieve this, we show that the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions of the secrecy rate maximization problem admit a unique solution for both degraded and non-degraded cases. Motivated by this, we also propose a low-complexity algorithm to find a stationary point. Numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.

On the Secrecy Rate of Downlink NOMA in Underlay Spectrum Sharing with Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we present the ergodic sum secrecy rate (ESSR) analysis of an underlay spectrum sharing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. We consider the scenario where the power transmitted by the secondary transmitter (ST) is constrained by the peak tolerable interference at multiple primary receivers (PRs) as well as the maximum transmit power of the ST. The effect of channel estimation error is also taken into account in our analysis. We derive exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for the ESSR of the downlink NOMA system, and show that the performance can be classified into two distinct regimes, i.e., it is dictated either by the interference constraint or by the power constraint. Our results confirm the superiority of the NOMA-based system over its orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based counterpart. More interestingly, our results show that NOMA helps in maintaining the secrecy rate of the strong user while significantly enhancing the secrecy performance of the weak user as compared to OMA. The correctness of the proposed investigation is corroborated through Monte Carlo simulation.

Dynamic Federated Learning-Based Economic Framework for Internet-of-Vehicles

Federated learning (FL) can empower Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV) networks by leveraging smart vehicles (SVs) to participate in the learning process with minimum data exchanges and privacy disclosure. The collected data and learned knowledge can help the vehicular service provider (VSP) improve the global model accuracy, e.g., for road safety as well as better profits for both VSP and participating SVs. Nonetheless, there exist major challenges when implementing the FL in IoV networks, such as dynamic activities and diverse quality-of-information (QoI) from a large number of SVs, VSP's limited payment budget, and profit competition among SVs. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic FL-based economic framework for an IoV network to address these challenges. Specifically, the VSP first implements an SV selection method to determine a set of the best SVs for the FL process according to the significance of their current locations and information history at each learning round. Then, each selected SV can collect on-road information and offer a payment contract to the VSP based on its collected QoI. For that, we develop a multi-principal one-agent contract-based policy to maximize the profits of the VSP and learning SVs under the VSP's limited payment budget and asymmetric information between the VSP and SVs. Through experimental results using real-world on-road datasets, we show that our framework can converge 57% faster (even with only 10% of active SVs in the network) and obtain much higher social welfare of the network (up to 27.2 times) compared with those of other baseline FL methods.

Utility Maximization for Large-Scale Cell-Free Massive MIMO Downlink

We consider the system-wide utility maximization problem in the downlink of a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system whereby a very large number of access points (APs) simultaneously serve a group of users. Specifically, four fundamental problems with increasing order of user fairness are of interest: (i) to maximize the average spectral efficiency (SE), (ii) to maximize the proportional fairness, (iii) to maximize the harmonic-rate of all users, and lastly (iv) to maximize the minimum SE of all users, subject to a sum power constraint at each AP. As the considered problems are non-convex, existing solutions normally rely on successive convex approximation to find a sub-optimal solution. More specifically, these known methods use off-the-shelf convex solvers, which basically implement an interior-point algorithm, to solve the derived convex problems. The main issue of such methods is that their complexity does not scale favorably with the problem size, limiting previous studies to cell-free massive MIMO of moderate scales. Thus the potential of cell-free massive MIMO has not been fully understood. To address this issue, we propose a unified framework based on an accelerated projected gradient method to solve the considered problems. Particularly, the proposed solution is found in closed-form expressions and only requires the first order oracle of the objective, rather than the Hessian matrix as in known solutions, and thus is much more memory efficient. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed solution achieves the same utility performance but with far less run-time, compared to other second-order methods. Simulation results for large-scale cell-free massive MIMO show that the four utility functions can deliver nearly uniformed services to all users. In other words, user fairness is not a great concern in large-scale cell-free massive MIMO.

Noncoherent Joint Transmission Beamforming for Dense Small Cell Networks: Global Optimality, Efficient Solution and Distributed Implementation

We investigate the coordinated multi-point noncoherent joint transmission (JT) in dense small cell networks. The goal is to design beamforming vectors for macro cell and small cell base stations (BSs) such that the weighted sum rate of the system is maximized, subject to a total transmit power at individual BSs. The optimization problem is inherently nonconvex and intractable, making it difficult to explore the full potential performance of the scheme. To this end, we first propose an algorithm to find a globally optimal solution based on the generic monotonic branch reduce and bound optimization framework. Then, for a more computationally efficient method, we adopt the inner approximation (InAp) technique to efficiently derive a locally optimal solution, which is numerically shown to achieve near-optimal performance. In addition, for decentralized networks such as those comprising of multi-access edge computing servers, we develop an algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers, which distributively implements the InAp-based solution. Our main conclusion is that the noncoherent JT is a promising transmission scheme for dense small cell networks, since it can exploit the densitification gain, outperforms the coordinated beamforming, and is amenable to distributed implementation.

On Estimating Maximum Sum Rate of MIMO Systems with Successive Zero-Forcing Dirty Paper Coding and Per-antenna Power Constraint

In this paper, we study the sum rate maximization for successive zero-forcing dirty-paper coding (SZFDPC) with per-antenna power constraint (PAPC). Although SZFDPC is a low-complexity alternative to the optimal dirty paper coding (DPC), efficient algorithms to compute its sum rate are still open problems especially under practical PAPC. The existing solution to the considered problem is computationally inefficient due to employing high-complexity interior-point method. In this study, we propose two new low-complexity approaches to this important problem. More specifically, the first algorithm achieves the optimal solution by transforming the original problem in the broadcast channel into an equivalent problem in the multiple access channel, then the resulting problem is solved by alternating optimization together with successive convex approximation. We also derive a suboptimal solution based on machine learning to which simple linear regressions are applicable. The approaches are analyzed and validated extensively to demonstrate their superiors over the existing approach.

Energy Efficiency Fairness for Multi-Pair Wireless-Powered Relaying Systems

We consider a multi-pair amplify-and-forward relay network where the energy-constrained relays adopting time-switching protocol harvest energy from the radio frequency signals transmitted by the users for assisting user data transmission. Both one-way and two-way relaying techniques are investigated. Aiming at energy efficiency (EE) fairness among the user pairs, we construct an energy consumption model incorporating rate-dependent signal processing power, the dependence on output power level of power amplifiers' efficiency, and nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) circuits. Then we formulate the max-min EE fairness problems in which the data rates, users' transmit power, relays' processing coefficient, and EH time are jointly optimized under the constraints on the quality of service and users' maximum transmit power. To achieve efficient suboptimal solutions to these nonconvex problems, we devise monotonic descent algorithms based on the inner approximation (IA) framework, which solve a second-order-cone program in each iteration. To further simplify the designs, we propose an approach combining IA and zero-forcing beamforming, which eliminates inter-pair interference and reduces the numbers of variables and required iterations. Finally, extensive numerical results are presented to validate the proposed approaches. More specifically, the results demonstrate that ignoring the realistic aspects of power consumption might degrade the performance remarkably, and jointly designing parameters involved could significantly enhance the energy efficiency.

Energy-Efficient Transmission Strategies for CoMP Downlink - Overview, Extension, and Numerical Comparison

This paper focuses on energy-efficient coordinated multi-point (CoMP) downlink in multi-antenna multi-cell wireless communications systems. We provide an overview of transmit beamforming designs for various energy efficiency (EE) metrics including maximizing the overall network EE, sum weighted EE and fairness EE. Generally, an EE optimization problem is a nonconvex program for which finding the globally optimal solutions requires high computational effort. Consequently, several low-complexity suboptimal approaches have been proposed. Here we sum up the main concepts of the recently proposed algorithms based on the state-of-the-art successive convex approximation (SCA) framework. Moreover, we discuss the application to the newly posted EE problems including new EE metrics and power consumption models. Furthermore, distributed implementation developed based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for the provided solutions is also discussed. For the sake of completeness, we provide numerical comparison of the SCA based approaches and the conventional solutions developed based on parametric transformations (PTs). We also demonstrate the differences and roles of different EE objectives and power consumption models.

Energy Efficiency Maximization for C-RANs: Discrete Monotonic Optimization, Penalty, and l0-Approximation Methods

We study downlink of multiantenna cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) with finite-capacity fronthaul links. The aim is to propose joint designs of beamforming and remote radio head (RRH)-user association, subject to constraints on users' quality-of-service, limited capacity of fronthaul links and transmit power, to maximize the system energy efficiency. To cope with the limited-capacity fronthaul we consider the problem of RRH-user association to select a subset of users that can be served by each RRH. Moreover, different to the conventional power consumption models, we take into account the dependence of baseband signal processing power on the data rate, as well as the dynamics of the efficiency of power amplifiers. The considered problem leads to a mixed binary integer program (MBIP) which is difficult to solve. Our first contribution is to derive a globally optimal solution for the considered problem by customizing a discrete branch-reduce-and-bound (DBRB) approach. Since the global optimization method requires a high computational effort, we further propose two suboptimal solutions able to achieve the near optimal performance but with much reduced complexity. To this end, we transform the design problem into continuous (but inherently nonconvex) programs by two approaches: penalty and \ell_{0}-approximation methods. These resulting continuous nonconvex problems are then solved by the successive convex approximation framework. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Energy-Efficient Multi-Cell Multigroup Multicasting with Joint Beamforming and Antenna Selection

This paper studies the energy efficiency and sum rate trade-off for coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output systems. We first consider a conventional network energy efficiency maximization (EEmax) problem by jointly optimizing the transmit beamformers and antennas selected to be used in transmission. We also account for per-antenna maximum power constraints to avoid non-linear distortion in power amplifiers and user-specific minimum rate constraints to guarantee certain service levels and fairness. To be energy-efficient, transmit antenna selection is employed. It eventually leads to a mixed-Boolean fractional program. We then propose two different approaches to solve this difficult problem. The first solution is based on a novel modeling technique that produces a tight continuous relaxation. The second approach is based on sparsity-inducing method, which does not require the introduction of any Boolean variable. We also investigate the trade-off between the energy efficiency and sum rate by proposing two different formulations. In the first formulation, we propose a new metric that is the ratio of the sum rate and the so-called weighted power. Specifically, this metric reduces to EEmax when the weight is 1, and to sum rate maximization when the weight is 0. In the other method, we treat the trade-off problem as a multi-objective optimization for which a scalarization approach is adopted. Numerical results illustrate significant achievable energy efficiency gains over the method where the antenna selection is not employed. The effect of antenna selection on the energy efficiency and sum rate trade-off is also demonstrated.
