Existence of variational solutions to doubly nonlinear systems in nondecreasing domains

For $q \in (0, \infty)$, we consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem to doubly nonlinear systems of the form \begin{align*} \partial_t \big( |u|^{q-1}u \big) - \operatorname{div} \big( D_ξf(x,u,Du) \big) = - D_u f(x,u,Du) \end{align*} in a bounded noncylindrical domain $E \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We assume that $x \mapsto f(x,u,ξ)$ is integrable, that $(u,ξ) \mapsto f(x,u,ξ)$ is convex, and that $f$ satisfies a $p$-coercivity condition for some $p \in (1,\infty)$. However, we do not impose any specific growth condition from above on $f$. For nondecreasing domains that merely satisfy $\mathcal{L}^{n+1}(\partial E) = 0$, we prove the existence of variational solutions $u \in C^{0}([0,T];L^{q+1}(E,\mathbb{R}^N))$ via a nonlinear version of the method of minimizing movements. Moreover, under additional assumptions on $E$ and a $p$-growth condition on $f$, we show that $|u|^{q-1}u$ admits a weak time derivative in the dual $(V^{p,0}(E))^{\prime}$ of the subspace $V^{p,0}(E) \subset L^p(0,T;W^{1,p}(Ω,\mathbb{R}^N))$ that encodes zero boundary values.

Carleson-type removability for $p$-parabolic equations

We characterize removable sets for Hölder continuous solutions to degenerate parabolic equations of $p$-growth. A sufficient and necessary condition for a set to be removable is given in terms of an intrinsic parabolic Hausdorff measure, which depends on the considered Hölder exponent. We present a new method to prove the sufficient condition, which relies only on fundamental properties of the obstacle problem and supersolutions, and applies to a general class of operators. For the necessity of the condition, we establish the Hölder continuity of solutions with measure data, provided the measure satisfies a suitable decay property. The techniques developed in this article provide a new point of view even in the case $p=2$.

Global higher integrability for systems with $p$-growth structure in noncylindrical domains

We consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem to systems with $p$-growth structure with $1 < p < \infty$, whose prototype is \begin{equation*} \partial_t u- \operatorname{div} \big( |Du|^{p-2} Du \big) = \operatorname{div} \left( |F|^{p-2} F \right), \end{equation*} in a bounded noncylindrical domain $E \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. For $p> \frac{2(n+1)}{n+2}$ and domains $E$ that satisfy suitable regularity assumptions and do not grow or shrink too fast, we prove global higher integrability of $Du$. The result is already new in the case $p=2$.

Existence of variational solutions to doubly nonlinear systems in general noncylindrical domains

We consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem to doubly nonlinear systems of the form \begin{align*} \partial_t \big( |u|^{q-1}u \big) - \operatorname{div} \big( D_ξf(x,u,Du) \big) = - D_u f(x,u,Du) \end{align*} with $q \in (0, \infty)$ in a bounded noncylindrical domain $E \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. Further, we suppose that $x \mapsto f(x,u,ξ)$ is integrable, that $(u,ξ) \mapsto f(x,u,ξ)$ is convex, and that $f$ satisfies a $p$-growth and -coercivity condition for some $p>\max \big\{ 1,\frac{n(q+1)}{n+q+1} \big\}$. Merely assuming that $\mathcal{L}^{n+1}(\partial E) = 0$, we prove the existence of variational solutions $u \in L^\infty\big( 0,T;L^{q+1}(E,\mathbb{R}^N)\big)$. If $E$ does not shrink too fast, we show that for the solution $u$ constructed in the first step, $\vert u \vert^{q-1}u$ admits a distributional time derivative. Moreover, under suitable conditions on $E$ and the stricter lower bound $p \geq \frac{(n+1)(q+1)}{n+q+1}$, $u$ is continuous with respect to time.

Continuity up to the boundary for obstacle problems to porous medium type equations

We show that signed weak solutions to obstacle problems for porous medium type equations with Cauchy-Dirichlet boundary data are continuous up to the parabolic boundary, provided that the obstacle and boundary data are continuous. This result seems to be new even for signed solutions to the (obstacle free) Cauchy-Dirichlet problem to the singular porous medium equation, which is retrieved as a special case.

Higher integrability for singular doubly nonlinear systems

We prove a local higher integrability result for the spatial gradient of weak solutions to doubly nonlinear parabolic systems whose prototype is $$ \partial_t \left(|u|^{q-1}u \right) -\operatorname{div} \left( |Du|^{p-2} Du \right) = \operatorname{div} \left( |F|^{p-2} F \right) \quad \text{ in } Ω_T := Ω\times (0,T) $$ with parameters $p>1$ and $q>0$ and $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. In this paper, we are concerned with the ranges $q>1$ and $p>\frac{n(q+1)}{n+q+1}$. A key ingredient in the proof is an intrinsic geometry that takes both the solution $u$ and its spatial gradient $Du$ into account.

The bounded slope condition for parabolic equations with time-dependent integrands

In this paper, we study the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \mbox{$\partial_t u - \operatorname{div} \left( D_ξf(t, Du)\right) = 0$ } & \mbox{in $Ω_T$}, \\[5pt] \mbox{$u = u_o$} & \mbox{on $\partial_{\mathcal{P}} Ω_T$},\\[5pt] \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a convex domain, $f:[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is $L^1$-integrable in time and convex in the second variable. Assuming that the initial and boundary datum $u_o:\overlineΩ\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ satisfies the bounded slope condition, we prove the existence of a unique variational solution that is Lipschitz continuous in the space variable.

On the Hölder regularity of signed solutions to a doubly nonlinear equation. Part III

We establish the local Hölder continuity of possibly sign-changing solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations whose prototype is \[ \partial_t\big(|u|^{q-1}u\big)-Δ_p u=0,\quad 1<p<2,\quad 0<p-1<q. \] The proof exploits the space expansion of positivity for the singular, parabolic $p$-Laplacian and employs the method of intrinsic scaling by carefully balancing the double singularity.

On the Hölder regularity of signed solutions to a doubly nonlinear equation. Part II

We demonstrate two proofs for the local Hölder continuity of possibly sign-changing solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations whose prototype is \[ \partial_t\big(|u|^{q-1}u\big)-Δ_p u=0,\quad p>2,\quad 0<q<p-1. \] The first proof takes advantage of the expansion of positivity for the degenerate, parabolic $p$-Laplacian, thus simplifying the argument; whereas the other proof relies solely on the energy estimates for the doubly nonlinear parabolic equations. After proper adaptions of the interior arguments, we also obtain the boundary regularity for initial-boundary value problems of Dirichlet type and Neumann type.
