A dispersive correction to the Casimir force

Using perturbation theory the first order dispersive correction to the Casimir energy between two plates separated by a dielectric material is calculated. It falls off with the plate separation as 1/L^6. The result is derived both from evaluation of the zero-point energy and within the Lifshitz formulation. It is pointed out that a possible surface term can be more important, varying like 1/L^5.

Conformal Mappings and Dispersionless Toda hierarchy II: General String Equations

In this article, we classify the solutions of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy into degenerate and non-degenerate cases. We show that every non-degenerate solution is determined by a function $\mathcal{H}(z_1,z_2)$ of two variables. We interpret these non-degenerate solutions as defining evolutions on the space $\mathfrak{D}$ of pairs of conformal mappings $(g,f)$, where $g$ is a univalent function on the exterior of the unit disc, $f$ is a univalent function on the unit disc, normalized such that $g(\infty)=\infty$, $f(0)=0$ and $f'(0)g'(\infty)=1$. For each solution, we show how to define the natural time variables $t_n, n\in\Z$, as complex coordinates on the space $\mathfrak{D}$. We also find explicit formulas for the tau function of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy in terms of $\mathcal{H}(z_1, z_2)$. Imposing some conditions on the function $\mathcal{H}(z_1, z_2)$, we show that the dispersionless Toda flows can be naturally restricted to the subspace $Σ$ of $\mathfrak{D}$ defined by $f(w)=1/\overline{g(1/\bar{w})}$. This recovers the result of Zabrodin.

Conformal Mappings and Dispersionless Toda hierarchy

Let $\mathfrak{D}$ be the space consists of pairs $(f,g)$, where $f$ is a univalent function on the unit disc with $f(0)=0$, $g$ is a univalent function on the exterior of the unit disc with $g(\infty)=\infty$ and $f'(0)g'(\infty)=1$. In this article, we define the time variables $t_n, n\in \Z$, on $\mathfrak{D}$ which are holomorphic with respect to the natural complex structure on $\mathfrak{D}$ and can serve as local complex coordinates for $\mathfrak{D}$. We show that the evolutions of the pair $(f,g)$ with respect to these time coordinates are governed by the dispersionless Toda hierarchy flows. An explicit tau function is constructed for the dispersionless Toda hierarchy. By restricting $\mathfrak{D}$ to the subspace $Σ$ consists of pairs where $f(w)=1/\bar{g(1/\bar{w})}$, we obtain the integrable hierarchy of conformal mappings considered by Wiegmann and Zabrodin \cite{WZ}. Since every $C^1$ homeomorphism $γ$ of the unit circle corresponds uniquely to an element $(f,g)$ of $\mathfrak{D}$ under the conformal welding $γ=g^{-1}\circ f$, the space $\text{Homeo}_{C}(S^1)$ can be naturally identified as a subspace of $\mathfrak{D}$ characterized by $f(S^1)=g(S^1)$. We show that we can naturally define complexified vector fields $\pa_n, n\in \Z$ on $\text{Homeo}_{C}(S^1)$ so that the evolutions of $(f,g)$ on $\text{Homeo}_{C}(S^1)$ with respect to $\pa_n$ satisfy the dispersionless Toda hierarchy. Finally, we show that there is a similar integrable structure for the Riemann mappings $(f^{-1}, g^{-1})$. Moreover, in the latter case, the time variables are Fourier coefficients of $γ$ and $1/γ^{-1}$.

Conformal weldings and Dispersionless Toda hierarchy

Given a $C^1$ homeomorphism of the unit circle $γ$, let $f$ and $g$ be respectively the normalized conformal maps from the unit disc and its exterior so that $γ= g^{-1}\circ f$ on the unit circle. In this article, we show that by suitably defined time variables, the evolutions of the pairs $(g, f)$ and $(g^{-1}, f^{-1})$ can be described by an infinite set of nonlinear partial differential equations known as dispersionless Toda hierarchy. Relations to the integrable structure of conformal maps first studied by Wiegmann and Zabrodin \cite{WZ} are discussed. An extension of the hierarchy which contains both our solution and the solution of \cite{WZ} is defined.

The Weil--Petersson geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces

In [4], Z. Huang showed that in the thick part of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, the sectional curvature of the Weil--Petersson metric is bounded below by a constant depending on injectivity radius, but independent of the genus $g$. In this article, we prove this result by a different method. We also show that the same result holds for Ricci curvature. For the universal Teichmüller space equipped with Hilbert structure induced by Weil--Petersson metric, we prove that its sectional curvature is bounded below by a universal constant.

Quantum Liouville theory in the background field formalism I. Compact Riemann surfaces

Using Polyakov's functional integral approach with the Liouville action functional defined in \cite{ZT2} and \cite{LTT}, we formulate quantum Liouville theory on a compact Riemann surface X of genus g > 1. For the partition function and for the correlation functions with the stress-energy tensor components $<\prod_{i=1}^{n}T(z_{i})\prod_{k=1}^{l}\bar{T}(\w_{k})X>$, we describe Feynman rules in the background field formalism by expanding corresponding functional integrals around a classical solution - the hyperbolic metric on X. Extending analysis in \cite{LT1,LT2,LT-Varenna,LT3}, we define the regularization scheme for any choice of global coordinate on X, and for Schottky and quasi-Fuchsian global coordinates we rigorously prove that one- and two-point correlation functions satisfy conformal Ward identities in all orders of the perturbation theory. Obtained results are interpreted in terms of complex geometry of the projective line bundle $\cE_{c}=λ_{H}^{c/2}$ over the moduli space $\mathfrak{M}_{g}$, where c is the central charge and $λ_{H}$ is the Hodge line bundle, and provide Friedan-Shenker \cite{FS} complex geometry approach to CFT with the first non-trivial example besides rational models.

Universal Index Theorem on $Mob(S^1)\Diff_+(S^1)$

By conformal welding, there is a pair of univalent functions $(f,g)$ associated to every point of the complex Kähler manifold $\Mob(S^1)\bk\Diff_+(S^1)$. For every integer $n\geq 1$, we generalize the definition of Faber polynomials to define some canonical bases of holomorphic $1-n$ and $n$ differentials associated to the pair $(f,g)$. Using these bases, we generalize the definition of Grunsky matrices to define matrices whose columns are the coefficients of the differentials with respect to standard bases of differentials on the unit disc and the exterior unit disc. We derive some identities among these matrices which are reminiscent of the Grunsky equality. By using these identities, we showed that we can define the Fredholm determinants of the period matrices of holomorphic $n$ differentials $N_n$, which are the Gram matrices of the canonical bases of holomorphic $n$-differentials with respect to the inner product given by the hyperbolic metric. Finally we proved that $\det N_n =(\det N_1)^{6n^2-6n+1}$ and $\pa\bar{\pa}\log\det N_n$ is $-(6n^2-6n+1)/(6πi)$ of the Weil-Petersson symplectic form.

Coupled Modified KP Hierarchy and Its Dispersionless Limit

We define the coupled modified KP hierarchy and its dispersionless limit. This integrable hierarchy is a generalization of the ''half'' of the Toda lattice hierarchy as well as an extension of the mKP hierarchy. The solutions are parametrized by a fibered flag manifold. The dispersionless counterpart interpolates several versions of dispersionless mKP hierarchy.

Bers isomorphism on the universal Teichmüller curve

We study the Bers isomorphism between the Teichmüller space of the parabolic cyclic group and the universal Teichmüller curve. We prove that this is a group isomorphism and its derivative map gives a remarkable relation between Fourier coefficients of cusp forms and Fourier coefficients of vector fields on the unit circle. We generalize the Takhtajan-Zograf metric to the Teichmüller space of the parabolic cyclic group, and prove that up to a constant, it coincides with the pull back of the Velling-Kirillov metric defined on the universal Teichmüller curve via the Bers isomorphism.

Fay-like identities of the Toda Lattice Hierarchy and its dispersionless limit

In this paper, we derive the Fay-like identities of tau function for the Toda lattice hierarchy from the bilinear identity. We prove that the Fay-like identities are equivalent to the hierarchy. We also show that the dispersionless limit of the Fay-like identities are the dispersionless Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy.

Holomorphic factorization of determinants of Laplacians using quasi-Fuchsian uniformization

For a quasi-Fuchsian group $\Ga$ with ordinary set $Ω$, and $Δ_{n}$ the Laplacian on \n differentials on $\Ga\bkΩ$, we define a notion of a Bers dual basis $ϕ_{1},...c,ϕ_{2d}$ for $\kerΔ_{n}$. We prove that $\detΔ_{n}/\det <ϕ_{j},ϕ_{k}>$, is, up to an anomaly computed by Takhtajan and the second author in \cite{TT1}, the modulus squared of a holomorphic function F(n), where F(n) is a quasi-Fuchsian analogue of the Selberg zeta Z(n). This generalizes the D'Hoker-Phong formula $\detΔ_{n}=c_{g,n}Z(n)$, and is a quasi-Fuchsian counterpart of the result for Schottky groups proved by Takhtajan and the first author in \cite{MT}.

Löwner equations and dispersionless hierarchies

Using the Hirota representation of dispersionless dKP and dToda hierarchies, we show that the chordal Löwner equations and radial Löwner equations respectively serve as consistency conditions for one variable reductions of these integrable hierarchies. We also clarify the geometric meaning of this result by relating it to the eigenvalue distribution of normal random matrices in the large N limit.

Weil-Petersson metric on the universal Teichmuller space I: Curvature properties and Chern forms

We prove that the universal Teichmuller space T(1) carries a new structure of a complex Hilbert manifold. We show that the connected component of the identity of T(1), the Hilbert submanifold T_{0}(1), is a topological group. We define a Weil-Petersson metric on T(1) by Hilbert space inner products on tangent spaces, compute its Riemann curvature tensor, and show that T(1) is a Kahler-Einstein manifold with negative Ricci and sectional curvatures. We introduce and compute Mumford-Miller-Morita characteristic forms for the vertical tangent bundle of the universal Teichmuller curve fibration over the universal Teichmuller space. As an application, we derive Wolpert curvature formulas for the finite-dimensional Teichmuller spaces from the formulas for the universal Teichmuller space.

Weil-Petersson metric on the universal Teichmuller space II. Kahler potential and period mapping

We study the Hilbert manifold structure on $T_{0}(1)$ -- the connected component of the identity of the Hilbert manifold T(1). We characterize points on $T_{0}(1)$ in terms of Bers and pre-Bers embeddings, and prove that the Grunsky operators $B_{1}$ and $B_{4}$, associated with the points in $T_{0}(1)$ via conformal welding, are Hilbert-Schmidt. We define a ``universal Liouville action'' -- a real-valued function $\SSS_{1}$ on $T_{0}(1)$, and prove that it is a Kähler potential of the Weil-Petersson metric on $T_{0}(1)$. We also prove that $\SSS_{1}$ is $-\tfrac{1}{12π}$ times the logarithm of the Fredholm determinant of associated quasi-circle, which generalizes classical results of Schiffer and Hawley. We define the universal period mapping $\hat{\cP}: T(1)\to\cB(\ell^{2})$ of T(1) into the Banach space of bounded operators on the Hilbert space $\ell^{2}$, prove that $\hat{\cP}$ is a holomorphic mapping of Banach manifolds, and show that $\hat{\cP}$ coincides with the period mapping introduced by Kurillov and Yuriev and Nag and Sullivan. We prove that the restriction of $\hat{\cP}$ to $T_{0}(1)$ is an inclusion of $T_{0}(1)$ into the Segal-Wilson universal Grassmannian, which is a holomorphic mapping of Hilbert manifolds. We also prove that the image of the topological group $S$ of symmetric homeomorphisms of $S^{1}$ under the mapping $\hat{\cP}$ consists of compact operators on $\ell^{2}$.

Analytic functions and integrable hierarchies--characterization of tau functions

We prove the dispersionless Hirota equations for the dispersionless Toda, dispersionless coupled modified KP and dispersionless KP hierarchies using an idea from classical complex analysis. We also prove that the Hirota equations characterize the tau functions for each of these hierarchies. As a result, we establish the links between the hierarchies.

Velling-Kirillov metric on the universal Teichmuller curve

We extend Velling's approach and prove that the second variation of the spherical areas of a family of domains defines a Hermitian metric on the universal Teichmuller curve, whose pull back to Diff+(S^1)/S^1 coincides with the Kirillov metric. We show that the vertical integration of the square of the symplectic form of Velling-Kirillov metric on the universal Teichmuller curve is the symplectic form that defines the Weil-Petersson metric on the universal Teichmuller space. Restricted to a finite dimensional Teichmuller space, the vertical integration of the corresponding form on the Teichmuller curve is also the symplectic form that defines the Weil-Petersson metric on the Teichmuller space.
