Topological and Geometric Universal Thermodynamics in Conformal Field Theory

Universal thermal data in conformal field theory (CFT) offer a valuable means for characterizing and classifying criticality. With improved tensor network techniques, we investigate the universal thermodynamics on a nonorientable minimal surface, the crosscapped disk (or real projective plane, $\mathbb{RP}^2$). Through a cut-and-sew process, $\mathbb{RP}^2$ is topologically equivalent to a cylinder with rainbow and crosscap boundaries. We uncover that the crosscap contributes a fractional topological term $\frac{1}{2} \ln{k}$ related to nonorientable genus, with $k$ a universal constant in two-dimensional CFT, while the rainbow boundary gives rise to a geometric term $\frac{c}{4} \lnβ$, with $β$ the manifold size and $c$ the central charge. We have also obtained analytically the logarithmic rainbow term by CFT calculations, and discuss its connection to the renowned Cardy-Peschel conical singularity.

Reversible Codes and Its Application to Reversible DNA Codes over $F_{4^k}$

Coterm polynomials are introduced by Oztas et al. [a novel approach for constructing reversible codes and applications to DNA codes over the ring $F_2[u]/(u^{2k}-1)$, Finite Fields and Their Applications 46 (2017).pp. 217-234.], which generate reversible codes. In this paper, we generalize the coterm polynomials and construct some reversible codes which are optimal codes by using $m$-quasi-reciprocal polynomials. Moreover, we give a map from DNA $k$-bases to the elements of $F_{4^k}$, and construct reversible DNA codes over $F_{4^k}$ by DNA-$m$-quasi-reciprocal polynomials.

Quality-Assured Synchronized Task Assignment in Crowdsourcing

With the rapid development of crowdsourcing platforms that aggregate the intelligence of Internet workers, crowdsourcing has been widely utilized to address problems that require human cognitive abilities. Considering great dynamics of worker arrival and departure, it is of vital importance to design a task assignment scheme to adaptively select the most beneficial tasks for the available workers. In this paper, in order to make the most efficient utilization of the worker labor and balance the accuracy of answers and the overall latency, we a) develop a parameter estimation model that assists in estimating worker expertise, question easiness and answer confidence; b) propose a \textit{quality-assured synchronized task assignment scheme} that executes in batches and maximizes the number of potentially completed questions (MCQ) within each batch. We prove that MCQ problem is NP-hard and present two greedy approximation solutions to address the problem. The effectiveness and efficiency of the approximation solutions are further evaluated through extensive experiments on synthetic and real datasets. The experimental results show that the accuracy and the overall latency of the MCQ approaches outperform the existing online task assignment algorithms in the synchronized task assignment scenario.

The Birman exact sequence does not virtually split

This paper answers a basic question about the Birman exact sequence in the theory of mapping class groups. We prove that the Birman exact sequence does not admit a section over any subgroup $Γ$ contained in the Torelli group with finite index. A fortiori this proves that there is no section of the Birman exact sequence for any finite-index subgroup of the full mapping class group. This theorem was announced in a 1990 preprint of G. Mess, but an error was uncovered and described in a recent paper of the first author.

Multi-view Registration Based on Weighted Low Rank and Sparse Matrix Decomposition of Motions

Recently, the low rank and sparse (LRS) matrix decomposition has been introduced as an effective mean to solve the multi-view registration. It views each available relative motion as a block element to reconstruct one matrix so as to approximate the low rank matrix, where global motions can be recovered for multi-view registration. However, this approach is sensitive to the sparsity of the reconstructed matrix and it treats all block elements equally in spite of their varied reliability. Therefore, this paper proposes an effective approach for multi-view registration by the weighted LRS decomposition. Based on the anti-symmetry property of relative motions, it firstly proposes a completion strategy to reduce the sparsity of the reconstructed matrix. The reduced sparsity of reconstructed matrix can improve the robustness of LRS decomposition. Then, it proposes the weighted LRS decomposition, where each block element is assigned with one estimated weight to denote its reliability. By introducing the weight, more accurate registration results can be recovered from the estimated low rank matrix with good efficiency. Experimental results tested on public data sets illustrate the superiority of the proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches on robustness, accuracy, and efficiency.

FROG: A Fast and Reliable Crowdsourcing Framework (Technical Report)

For decades, the crowdsourcing has gained much attention from both academia and industry, which outsources a number of tasks to human workers. Existing works considered improving the task accuracy through voting or learning methods, they usually did not fully take into account reducing the latency of the task completion. When a task requester posts a group of tasks (e.g., sentiment analysis), and one can only obtain answers of all tasks after the last task is accomplished. As a consequence, the time delay of even one task in this group could delay the next step of the task requester's work from minutes to days, which is quite undesirable for the task requester. Inspired by the importance of the task accuracy and latency, in this paper, we will propose a novel crowdsourcing framework, namely Fast and Reliable crOwdsourcinG framework (FROG), which intelligently assigns tasks to workers, such that the latencies of tasks are reduced and the expected accuracies of tasks are met. Specifically, our FROG framework consists of two important components, task scheduler and notification modules. For the task scheduler module, we formalize a FROG task scheduling (FROG-TS) problem, in which the server actively assigns workers with tasks with high reliability and low latency. We prove that the FROG-TS problem is NP-hard. Thus, we design two heuristic approaches, request-based and batch-based scheduling. For the notification module, we define an efficient worker notifying (EWN) problem, which only sends task invitations to those workers with high probabilities of accepting the tasks. To tackle the EWN problem, we propose a smooth kernel density estimation approach to estimate the probability that a worker accepts the task invitation. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed FROG platform on both real and synthetic data sets.

An Efficient Probabilistic Approach for Graph Similarity Search

Graph similarity search is a common and fundamental operation in graph databases. One of the most popular graph similarity measures is the Graph Edit Distance (GED) mainly because of its broad applicability and high interpretability. Despite its prevalence, exact GED computation is proved to be NP-hard, which could result in unsatisfactory computational efficiency on large graphs. However, exactly accurate search results are usually unnecessary for real-world applications especially when the responsiveness is far more important than the accuracy. Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic approach to efficiently estimate GED, which is further leveraged for the graph similarity search. Specifically, we first take branches as elementary structures in graphs, and introduce a novel graph similarity measure by comparing branches between graphs, i.e., Graph Branch Distance (GBD), which can be efficiently calculated in polynomial time. Then, we formulate the relationship between GED and GBD by considering branch variations as the result ascribed to graph edit operations, and model this process by probabilistic approaches. By applying our model, the GED between any two graphs can be efficiently estimated by their GBD, and these estimations are finally utilized in the graph similarity search. Extensive experiments show that our approach has better accuracy, efficiency and scalability than other comparable methods in the graph similarity search over real and synthetic data sets.

On Efficiently Detecting Overlapping Communities over Distributed Dynamic Graphs

Modern networks are of huge sizes as well as high dynamics, which challenges the efficiency of community detection algorithms. In this paper, we study the problem of overlapping community detection on distributed and dynamic graphs. Given a distributed, undirected and unweighted graph, the goal is to detect overlapping communities incrementally as the graph is dynamically changing. We propose an efficient algorithm, called \textit{randomized Speaker-Listener Label Propagation Algorithm} (rSLPA), based on the \textit{Speaker-Listener Label Propagation Algorithm} (SLPA) by relaxing the probability distribution of label propagation. Besides detecting high-quality communities, rSLPA can incrementally update the detected communities after a batch of edge insertion and deletion operations. To the best of our knowledge, rSLPA is the first algorithm that can incrementally capture the same communities as those obtained by applying the detection algorithm from the scratch on the updated graph. Extensive experiments are conducted on both synthetic and real-world datasets, and the results show that our algorithm can achieve high accuracy and efficiency at the same time.

Proteomics Analysis of FLT3-ITD Mutation in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Using Deep Learning Neural Network

Deep Learning can significantly benefit cancer proteomics and genomics. In this study, we attempt to determine a set of critical proteins that are associated with the FLT3-ITD mutation in newly-diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia patients. A Deep Learning network consisting of autoencoders forming a hierarchical model from which high-level features are extracted without labeled training data. Dimensional reduction reduced the number of critical proteins from 231 to 20. Deep Learning found an excellent correlation between FLT3-ITD mutation with the levels of these 20 critical proteins (accuracy 97%, sensitivity 90%, specificity 100%). Our Deep Learning network could hone in on 20 proteins with the strongest association with FLT3-ITD. The results of this study allow a novel approach to determine critical protein pathways in the FLT3-ITD mutation, and provide proof-of-concept for an accurate approach to model big data in cancer proteomics and genomics.

Learning to Forecast Videos of Human Activity with Multi-granularity Models and Adaptive Rendering

We propose an approach for forecasting video of complex human activity involving multiple people. Direct pixel-level prediction is too simple to handle the appearance variability in complex activities. Hence, we develop novel intermediate representations. An architecture combining a hierarchical temporal model for predicting human poses and encoder-decoder convolutional neural networks for rendering target appearances is proposed. Our hierarchical model captures interactions among people by adopting a dynamic group-based interaction mechanism. Next, our appearance rendering network encodes the targets' appearances by learning adaptive appearance filters using a fully convolutional network. Finally, these filters are placed in encoder-decoder neural networks to complete the rendering. We demonstrate that our model can generate videos that are superior to state-of-the-art methods, and can handle complex human activity scenarios in video forecasting.

Deep Cross-Modal Correlation Learning for Audio and Lyrics in Music Retrieval

Little research focuses on cross-modal correlation learning where temporal structures of different data modalities such as audio and lyrics are taken into account. Stemming from the characteristic of temporal structures of music in nature, we are motivated to learn the deep sequential correlation between audio and lyrics. In this work, we propose a deep cross-modal correlation learning architecture involving two-branch deep neural networks for audio modality and text modality (lyrics). Different modality data are converted to the same canonical space where inter modal canonical correlation analysis is utilized as an objective function to calculate the similarity of temporal structures. This is the first study on understanding the correlation between language and music audio through deep architectures for learning the paired temporal correlation of audio and lyrics. Pre-trained Doc2vec model followed by fully-connected layers (fully-connected deep neural network) is used to represent lyrics. Two significant contributions are made in the audio branch, as follows: i) pre-trained CNN followed by fully-connected layers is investigated for representing music audio. ii) We further suggest an end-to-end architecture that simultaneously trains convolutional layers and fully-connected layers to better learn temporal structures of music audio. Particularly, our end-to-end deep architecture contains two properties: simultaneously implementing feature learning and cross-modal correlation learning, and learning joint representation by considering temporal structures. Experimental results, using audio to retrieve lyrics or using lyrics to retrieve audio, verify the effectiveness of the proposed deep correlation learning architectures in cross-modal music retrieval.

The universal surface bundle over the Torelli space has no sections

For $g>3$, we give two proofs of the fact that the \emph{Birman exact sequence} for the Torelli group \[ 1\to π_1(S_g)\to {\cal I}_{g,1}\to {\cal I}_g\to 1 \] does not split. This result was claimed by G. Mess in \cite{mess1990unit}, but his proof has a critical and unrepairable error which will be discussed in the introduction. Let ${\cal UI}_{g,n}\xrightarrow{Tu'_{g,n}} {\cal BI}_{g,n}$ (resp. ${\cal UPI}_{g,n}\xrightarrow{Tu_{g,n}}{\cal BPI}_{g,n}$) denote the universal surface bundle over the Torelli space fixing $n$ points as a set (resp. pointwise). We also deduce that $Tu'_{g,n}$ has no sections when $n>1$ and that $Tu_{g,n}$ has precisely $n$ distinct sections for $n\ge 0$ up to homotopy.

Universal Boundary Entropies in Conformal Field Theory: A Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Recently, entropy corrections on nonorientable manifolds such as the Klein bottle are proposed as a universal characterization of critical systems with an emergent conformal field theory (CFT). We show that entropy correction on the Klein bottle can be interpreted as a boundary effect via transforming the Klein bottle into an orientable manifold with nonlocal boundary interactions. The interpretation reveals the conceptual connection of the Klein bottle entropy with the celebrated Affleck-Ludwig entropy in boundary CFT. We propose a generic scheme to extract these universal boundary entropies from quantum Monte Carlo calculation of partition function ratios in lattice models. Our numerical results on the Affleck-Ludwig entropy and Klein bottle entropy for the $q$-state quantum Potts chains with $q=2,3$ show excellent agreement with the CFT predictions. For the quantum Potts chain with $q=4$, the Klein bottle entropy slightly deviates from the CFT prediction, which is possibly due to marginally irrelevant terms in the low-energy effective theory.

A secure blind watermarking scheme based on DCT domain of the scrambled image

This paper investigates a secure blind watermarking scheme. The main idea of the scheme not only protects the watermark information but also the embedding positions. To achieve a higher level of security, we propose a sub key generation mechanism based on the singular value decomposition and hash function, where sub keys depend on both the main key and the feature codes of the original image. The different sub keys ensure that the embedding positions are randomly selected for different original images. Watermark is embedded in the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficients of the scrambled original image. Simulation results show that such embedded method resolves well the contradiction of imperceptibility and robustness. Based on good correlation properties of chaotic sequences, we design a detection method, which can accurately compute geometric transformation (rotation and translation transformations) parameters. The security analysis, including key space analysis, key sensitivity analysis, cryptanalysis, and the comparison results demonstrate that the proposed watermarking scheme also achieves high security.

Conformal Thermal Tensor Network and Universal Entropy on Topological Manifolds

Partition functions of quantum critical systems, expressed as conformal thermal tensor networks, are defined on various manifolds which can give rise to universal entropy corrections. Through high-precision tensor network simulations of several quantum chains, we identify the universal entropy $S_{\mathcal{K}} = \ln{k}$ on the Klein bottle, where $k$ relates to quantum dimensions of the primary fields in conformal field theory (CFT). Different from the celebrated Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy $\ln{g}$ ($g$ reflects non-integer groundstate degeneracy), $S_{\mathcal{K}}$ has \textit{no} boundary dependence or surface energy terms accompanied, and can be very conveniently extracted from thermal data. On the Möbius-strip manifold, we uncover an entropy $S_{\mathcal{M}} = \frac{1}{2} (\ln{g} + \ln{k})$ in CFT, where $\frac{1}{2} \ln{g}$ is associated with the only open edge of the Möbius strip, and $\frac{1}{2} \ln{k}$ with the non-orientable topology. We employ $S_{\mathcal{K}}$ to accurately pinpoint the quantum phase transitions, even for those without local order parameters.

A Solar Radio Dynamic Spectrograph with Flexible Temporal-spectral Resolution

The observation and research of the solar radio emission have unique scientific values in solar and space physics and related space weather forecasting applications, since the observed spectral structures may carry important information about energetic electrons and underlying physical mechanisms. In this study, we present the design of a novel dynamic spectrograph that is installed at the Chashan solar radio station operated by Laboratory for Radio Technologies, Institute of Space Sciences at Shandong University. The spectrograph is characterized by the real-time storage of digitized radio intensity data in the time domain and its capability to perform off-line spectral analysis of the radio spectra. The analog signals received via antennas and amplified with a low-noise amplifier are converted into digital data at a speed reaching up to 32 k data points per millisecond. The digital data are then saved into a high-speed electronic disk for further off-line spectral analysis. Using different word length (1 k - 32 k) and time cadence (5 ms - 10 s) for the off-line fast Fourier transform analysis, we can obtain the dynamic spectrum of a radio burst with different (user-defined) temporal (5 ms - 10 s) and spectral (3 kHz ~ 320 kHz) resolution. This brings a great flexibility and convenience to data analysis of solar radio bursts, especially when some specific fine spectral structures are under study.

Joint Multiuser Downlink Beamforming and Admission Control for Green Cloud-RANs with Limited Fronthaul Based on Mixed Integer Semi-definite Program

With the dense deployment of the remote radio heads (RRHs), the huge network power consumption has become a great challenge for green cloud radio access networks (Cloud-RANs), and multiuser downlink beamforming has been proposed as a promising solution. Moreover, the increasing number of mobile users (MUs) causes that admission control is essential for Cloud-RAN with limited fronthaul capacity and predefined power budget. In this paper, we consider the problem of joint multiuser downlink beamforming and admission control (JBAC) to enhance the admitted MUs in the network and reduce the network power consumption, while taking into account the Quality of Service requirements of the MUs, the power budget constraints and fronthaul limitation. It is shown that the JBAC problem is a mixed integer nonlinear problem, and still non-convex even though the continuous relaxation is adopted. Therefore, we first transform the JBAC problem into a Mixed-Integer Semidefinite Program. Then, we propose a bound improving Branch and Bound algorithm to yield the near-optimal solution. For practical application, a polynomial-time heuristic algorithm is proposed to derive the sub-optimal solution. Extensive simulations are conducted with different system configurations to show the effectiveness of the proposed two schemes.

Subjective Knowledge Acquisition and Enrichment Powered By Crowdsourcing

Knowledge bases (KBs) have attracted increasing attention due to its great success in various areas, such as Web and mobile search.Existing KBs are restricted to objective factual knowledge, such as city population or fruit shape, whereas, subjective knowledge, such as big city, which is commonly mentioned in Web and mobile queries, has been neglected. Subjective knowledge differs from objective knowledge in that it has no documented or observed ground truth. Instead, the truth relies on people's dominant opinion. Thus, we can use the crowdsourcing technique to get opinion from the crowd. In our work, we propose a system, called crowdsourced subjective knowledge acquisition (CoSKA),for subjective knowledge acquisition powered by crowdsourcing and existing KBs. The acquired knowledge can be used to enrich existing KBs in the subjective dimension which bridges the gap between existing objective knowledge and subjective queries. The main challenge of CoSKA is the conflict between large scale knowledge facts and limited crowdsourcing resource. To address this challenge, in this work, we define knowledge inference rules and then select the seed knowledge judiciously for crowdsourcing to maximize the inference power under the resource constraint. Our experimental results on real knowledge base and crowdsourcing platform verify the effectiveness of CoSKA system.
