Phase controlled single-photon nonreciprocal transmission in a one-dimensional waveguide

We study the controllable single-photon scattering via a one-dimensional waveguide which is coupled to a two-level emitter and a single-mode cavity simultaneously. The emitter and the cavity are also coupled to each other and form a three-level system with cyclic transitions within the zero- and single-excitation subspaces. As a result, the phase of emitter-cavity coupling strength serves as a sensitive control parameter. When the emitter and cavity locate at the same point of the waveguide, we demonstrate the Rabi splitting and quasidark-state--induced perfect transmission for the incident photons. More interestingly, when they locate at different points of the waveguide, a controllable nonreciprocal transmission can be realized and the non-reciprocity is robust to the weak coupling between the system and environment. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our theoretical model is experimentally feasible with currently available technologies.

Nonreciprocal quantum interference and coherent photon routing in a three-port optomechanical system

We study the quantum interference between different weak signals in a three-port optomechanical system, which is achieved by coupling three cavity modes to the same mechanical mode. If one cavity serves as a control port and is perturbed continually by a control signal, nonreciprocal quantum interference can be observed when another signal is injected upon different target ports. In particular, we exhibit frequency-independent perfect blockade induced by the completely destructive interference over the full frequency domain. Moreover, coherent photon routing can be realized by perturbing all ports simultaneously, with which the synthetic signal only outputs from the desired port. We also reveal that the routing scheme can be extended to more-port optomechanical systems. The results in this paper may have potential applications for controlling light transport and quantum information processing.

Efficient variants of the CMRH method for solving a sequence of multi-shifted non-Hermitian linear systems simultaneously

Multi-shifted linear systems with non-Hermitian coefficient matrices arise in numerical solutions of time-dependent partial/fractional differential equations (PDEs/FDEs), in control theory, PageRank problems, and other research fields. We derive efficient variants of the restarted Changing Minimal Residual method based on the cost-effective Hessenberg procedure (CMRH) for this problem class. Then, we introduce a flexible variant of the algorithm that allows to use variable preconditioning at each iteration to further accelerate the convergence of shifted CMRH. We analyse the performance of the new class of methods in the numerical solution of PDEs and FDEs, also against other multi-shifted Krylov subspace methods.

Dynamical evolution of an effective two-level system with PT symmetry

We investigate the dynamics of parity- and time-reversal (PT ) symmetric two-energy-level atoms in the presence of two optical and a radio-frequency (rf) fields. The strength and relative phase of fields can drive the system from unbroken to broken PT symmetric regions. Compared with the Hermitian model, Rabi-type oscillation is still observed, and the oscillation characteristics are also adjusted by the strength and relative phase in the region of unbroken PT symmetry. At exception point (EP), the oscillation breaks down. To better understand the underlying properties we study the effective Bloch dynamics and find the emergence of the z components of the fixed points is the feature of the PT symmetry breaking and the projections in x-y plane can be controlled with high flexibility compared with the standard two-level system with PT symmetry. It helps to study the dynamic behavior of the complex PT symmetric model.

Dynamical evolutions in non-Hermitian triple-well system with complex potential

We investigate the dynamical properties for non-Hermitian triple-well system with a loss in the middle well. When chemical potentials in two end wells are uniform and nonlinear interactions are neglected, there always exists a dark state, whose eigenenergy becomes zero, and the projections onto which do not change over time and the loss factor. The increasing of loss factor only makes the damping form from the oscillating decay to over-damping decay. However, when the nonlinear interaction is introduced, even interactions in the two end wells are also uniform, the projection of the dark state will be obviously diminished. Simultaneously the increasing of loss factor will also aggravate the loss. In this process the interaction in the middle well plays no role. When two chemical potentials or interactions in two end wells are not uniform all disappear with time. In addition, when we extend the triple-well system to a general (2n + 1)-well, the loss is reduced greatly by the factor 1=2n in the absence of the nonlinear interaction.

Controllable unidirectional transport and photon storage in an one-dimensional lattice with complex hopping rates

We study an one-dimensional non-Hermitian lattice with complex hopping rates, which can be realized by a quasi-one-dimensional sawtooth-type Hermitian lattice after adiabatic elimination with proper conditions. By means of synthetic magnetic fluxes, the imaginary parts of the complex hopping rates can be modulated by additional phase, thus a non-reciprocal structure arises. With this lattice, one can realize robust unidirectional transport for both single-site and Gaussian excitations, which is immune to defects and backscattering. Furthermore, we proposed a sandwich structure based on the non-Hermitian lattice, which can be used for realizing controllable photon storage and reversal. The storage time and range can be artificially controlled within limits, and the storage efficiency can be increased via a finite gain compensation. The proposal of controllable photon transport in this paper opens up a new path for unidirectional photon transport and provides a promising platform for optical control and manipulation.

All-optical photon transmission switching in a passive-active optomechanical system

We propose a feasible scheme to realize all-optical photon transmission switching in a passiveactive optomechanical system, consisting of one ordinary passive cavity, one active cavity and one common movable membrane oscillator of perfect reflection, driven by two strong control fields and two weak probe fields symmetrically. By means of the gain effect of the active cavity, many novel and valuable phenomena arise, such as frequency-independent perfect reflection (FIPR) first proposed in this paper, adjustable photon bidirectional transmission, phase-dependent non-reciprocity and so on. The relevant parameters used for controlling the all-optical switching are precisely tunable by adjusting the strengths of control fields and the relative phase of probe fields. Furthermore, tunable fast and slow light can be realized in our system by accurately adjusting relevant parameters which is readily and feasible in experiments. These novel phenomena originate from the effective optomechanical coupling and the gain effect provide a promising platform for photonic devices, quantum network node fabrication and quantum information process (QIP).

Restarted Hessenberg method for solving shifted nonsymmetric linear systems

It is known that the restarted full orthogonalization method (FOM) outperforms the restarted generalized minimum residual (GMRES) method in several circumstances for solving shifted linear systems when the shifts are handled simultaneously. Many variants of them have been proposed to enhance their performance. We show that another restarted method, the restarted Hessenberg method [M. Heyouni, Méthode de Hessenberg Généralisée et Applications, Ph.D. Thesis, Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille, France, 1996] based on Hessenberg procedure, can effectively be employed, which can provide accelerating convergence rate with respect to the number of restarts. Theoretical analysis shows that the new residual of shifted restarted Hessenberg method is still collinear with each other. In these cases where the proposed algorithm needs less enough CPU time elapsed to converge than the earlier established restarted shifted FOM, weighted restarted shifted FOM, and some other popular shifted iterative solvers based on the short-term vector recurrence, as shown via extensive numerical experiments involving the recent popular applications of handling the time fractional differential equations.

A map of contour integral-based eigensolvers for solving generalized eigenvalue problems

Recently, contour integral-based methods have been actively studied for solving interior eigenvalue problems that find all eigenvalues located in a certain region and their corresponding eigenvectors. In this paper, we reconsider the algorithms of the five typical contour integral-based eigensolvers from the viewpoint of projection methods, and then map the relationships among these methods. From the analysis, we conclude that all contour integral-based eigensolvers can be regarded as projection methods and can be categorized based on their subspace used, the type of projection and the problem to which they are applied implicitly.

Enhanced absorption in heterostructures with graphene and truncated photonic crystals

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the optical absorption properties of heterostructures composed of graphene films and truncated photonic crystals (PCs) in the visible range. The experimental results show that the absorption of the heterostructure is enhanced greatly in the whole forbidden gap of PCs compared with that of graphene alone. The absorption is enhanced over a wide angle of incidence for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations. The enhanced absorption band broadens for TE polarization but narrows for TM polarization as the incident angle increases. In the forbidden gap of the PCs, the maximum absorptance of the heterostructures is nearly four times of that of bare graphene films for arbitrary incident angles and polarizations. The optical experiments are in excellent agreement with the theoretical results.
