An In-Vehicle KWS System with Multi-Source Fusion for Vehicle Applications

In order to maximize detection precision rate as well as the recall rate, this paper proposes an in-vehicle multi-source fusion scheme in Keyword Spotting (KWS) System for vehicle applications. Vehicle information, as a new source for the original system, is collected by an in-vehicle data acquisition platform while the user is driving. A Deep Neural Network (DNN) is trained to extract acoustic features and make a speech classification. Based on the posterior probabilities obtained from DNN, the vehicle information including the speed and direction of vehicle is applied to choose the suitable parameter from a pair of sensitivity values for the KWS system. The experimental results show that the KWS system with the proposed multi-source fusion scheme can achieve better performances in term of precision rate, recall rate, and mean square error compared to the system without it.

How reproducible are methods to measure the dynamic viscoelastic properties of poroelastic media?

There is a considerable number of research publications on the acoustical properties of porous media with an elastic frame. A simple search through the Web of ScienceTM (last accessed 21 March 2018) suggests that there are at least 819 publications which deal with the acoustics of poroelastic media. A majority of these researches require accurate knowledge of the elastic properties over a broad frequency range. However, the accuracy of the measurement of the dynamic elastic properties of poroelastic media has been a contentious issue. The novelty of this paper is that it studies the reproducibility of some popular experimental methods which are used routinely to measure the key elastic properties such as the dynamic Young's modulus, loss factor and Poisson ratio of poroelastic media. In this paper, fourteen independent sets of laboratory measurements were performed on specimens of the same porous materials. The results from these measurements suggest that the reproducibility of this type of experimental method is poor. This work can be helpful to suggest improvements which can be developed to harmonize the way the elastic properties of poroelastic media are measured worldwide.

A Framework for Optimizing Multi-cell NOMA: Delivering Demand with Less Resource

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) allows multiple users to simultaneously access the same time-frequency resource by using superposition coding and successive interference cancellation (SIC). Thus far, most papers on NOMA have focused on performance gain for one or sometimes two base stations. In this paper, we study multi-cell NOMA and provide a general framework for user clustering and power allocation, taking into account inter-cell interference, for optimizing resource allocation of NOMA in multi-cell networks of arbitrary topology. We provide a series of theoretical analysis, to algorithmically enable optimization approaches. The resulting algorithmic notion is very general. Namely, we prove that for any performance metric that monotonically increases in the cells' resource consumption, we have convergence guarantee for global optimum. We apply the framework with its algorithmic concept to a multi-cell scenario to demonstrate the gain of NOMA in achieving significantly higher efficiency.

A Two-Stage Allocation Scheme for Delay-Sensitive Services in Dense Vehicular Networks

Driven by the rapid development of wireless communication system, more and more vehicular services can be efficiently supported via vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. In order to allocate radio resource with the reasonable implementation complexity in dense urban intersection, a two-stage allocation algorithm is proposed in this paper, whose main objective is to minimize delay and ensure reliability. In particular, as for the first stage, the allocation policy is based on traffic density information (TDI), which is different from utilizing channel state information (CSI) and queue state information (QSI) in the second stage. Moreover, in order to reflect the influence of TDI on delay, a macroscopic vehicular mobility model is employed in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can acquire an asymptotically optimal performance with the acceptable complexity.

Optimizing Power and User Association for Energy Saving in Load-Coupled Cooperative LTE

We consider an energy minimization problem for cooperative LTE networks. To reduce energy consumption, we investigate how to jointly optimize the transmit power and the association between cells and user equipments (UEs), by taking into consideration joint transmission (JT), one of the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) techniques. We formulate the optimization problem mathematically. For solving the problem, a dynamic power allocation algorithm that adjusts the transmit power of all cells, and an algorithm for optimizing the cell-UE association, are proposed. The two algorithms are iteratively used in an algorithmic framework to enhance the energy performance. Numerically, the proposed algorithms can lead to lower energy consumption than the optimal energy setting in the non-JT case. In comparison to fixed power allocation in JT, the proposed dynamic power allocation algorithm is able to significantly reduce the energy consumption.

Load Balancing via Joint Transmission in Heterogeneous LTE: Modeling and Computation

As one of the Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) techniques, Joint Transmission (JT) can improve the overall system performance. In this paper, from the load balancing perspective, we study how the maximum load can be reduced by optimizing JT pattern that characterizes the association between cells and User Equipments (UEs). To give a model of the interference caused by cells with different time-frequency resource usage, we extend a load coupling model, by taking into account JT. In this model, the mutual interference depends on the load of cells coupled in a non-linear system with each other. Under this model, we study a two-cell case and proved that the optimality is achieved in linear time in the number of UEs. After showing the complexity of load balancing in the general network scenario, an iterative algorithm for minimizing the maximum load, named JT-MinMax, is proposed. We evaluate JT-MinMax in a Heterogeneous Network (HetNet), though it is not limited to this type of scenarios. Numerical results demonstrate the significant performance improvement of JT-MinMax on min-max cell load, compared to the conventional non-JT solution where each UE is served by the cell with best received transmit signal.

Range Assignment for Power Optimization in Load-Coupled Heterogeneous Networks

We consider the problem of transmission energy op- timization via range assignment for Low Power Nodes (LPNs) in Long Term Evolution (LTE) Heterogenous Networks (HetNets). The optimization is subject to the load coupling model, where the cells interfere with one another. Each cell provides data service for its users so as to maintain a target Quality-of-Service (QoS). We prove that, irrespective the presence of maximum power limit or its value, operating at full load is optimal. We perform energy minimization by optimizing the association between User Equipments (UEs) and cells via selecting cell- specific offsets on LPNs. Moreover, the optimization problem is proved to be NP-hard. We propose a tabu search algorithm for offset optimization (TSO). For each offset, TSO computes the optimal power solution such that all cells operate at full load. Numerical results demonstrate the significant performance improvement of TSO on optimizing the sum transmission energy, compared to the conventional solution where uniform offset is used for all LPNs.

A Performance Study of Energy Minimization for Interleaved and Localized FDMA

Optimal channel allocation is a key performance engineering aspect in single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA). It is of significance to consider minimum sum power (Min-Power), subject to meeting specified user's demand, since mobile users typically employ battery-powered handsets. In this paper, we prove that Min-Power is polynomial-time solvable for interleaved SC-FDMA (IFDMA). Then we propose a channel allocation algorithm for IFDMA, which is guaranteed to achieve global optimum in polynomial time. We numerically compare the proposed algorithm with optimal localized SC-FDMA (LFDMA) for Min-Power. The results show that LFDMA outperforms IFDMA in the maximal supported user demand. When the user demand can be satisfied in both LFDMA and IFDMA, LFDMA performs slightly better than IFDMA. However Min- Power is polynomial-time solvable for IFDMA whereas it is not for LFDMA.

Optimal Reliability in Energy Harvesting Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks

For Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks, it is essential to reliably sense and deliver the environmental data on time to avoid system malfunction. While energy harvesting is a promising technique to extend the lifetime of sensor nodes, it also brings new challenges for system reliability due to the stochastic nature of the harvested energy. In this paper, we investigate the optimal energy management policy to minimize the weighted packet loss rate under delay constraint, where the packet loss rate considers the lost packets both during the sensing and delivering processes. We show that the above energy management problem can be modeled as an infinite horizon average reward constraint Markov decision problem. In order to address the well-known curse of dimensionality problem and facilitate distributed implementation, we utilize the linear value approximation technique. Moreover, we apply stochastic online learning with post-decision state to deal with the lack of knowledge of the underlying stochastic processes. A distributed energy allocation algorithm with water-filling structure and a scheduling algorithm by auction mechanism are obtained. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves nearly the same performance as the optimal offline value iteration algorithm while requiring much less computation complexity and signaling overhead, and outperforms various existing baseline algorithms.

Power and Channel Allocation for Non-orthogonal Multiple Access in 5G Systems: Tractability and Computation

Network capacity calls for significant increase for 5G cellular systems. A promising multi-user access scheme, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation (SIC), is currently under consideration. In NOMA, spectrum efficiency is improved by allowing more than one user to simultaneously access the same frequency-time resource and separating multi-user signals by SIC at the receiver. These render resource allocation and optimization in NOMA different from orthogonal multiple access in 4G. In this paper, we provide theoretical insights and algorithmic solutions to jointly optimize power and channel allocation in NOMA. For utility maximization, we mathematically formulate NOMA resource allocation problems. We characterize and analyze the problems' tractability under a range of constraints and utility functions. For tractable cases, we provide polynomial-time solutions for global optimality. For intractable cases, we prove the NP-hardness and propose an algorithmic framework combining Lagrangian duality and dynamic programming (LDDP) to deliver near-optimal solutions. To gauge the performance of the obtained solutions, we also provide optimality bounds on the global optimum. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithmic solution can significantly improve the system performance in both throughput and fairness over orthogonal multiple access as well as over a previous NOMA resource allocation scheme.

Energy-Efficient Localization and Tracking of Mobile Devices in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are effective for locating and tracking people and objects in various industrial environments. Since energy consumption is critical to prolonging the lifespan of WSNs, we propose an energy-efficient LOcalization and Tracking} (eLOT) system, using low-cost and portable hardware to enable highly accurate tracking of targets. Various fingerprint-based approaches for localization and tracking are implemented in eLOT. In order to achieve high energy efficiency, a network-level scheme coordinating collision and interference is proposed. On the other hand, based on the location information, mobile devices in eLOT can quickly associate with the specific channel in a given area, while saving energy through avoiding unnecessary transmission. Finally, a platform based on TI CC2530 and the Linux operating system is built to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in terms of localization accuracy and energy efficiency.

Soft-Defined Heterogeneous Vehicular Network: Architecture and Challenges

Heterogeneous Vehicular NETworks (HetVNETs) can meet various quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for intelligent transport system (ITS) services by integrating different access networks coherently. However, the current network architecture for HetVNET cannot efficiently deal with the increasing demands of rapidly changing network landscape. Thanks to the centralization and flexibility of the cloud radio access network (Cloud-RAN), soft-defined networking (SDN) can conveniently be applied to support the dynamic nature of future HetVNET functions and various applications while reducing the operating costs. In this paper, we first propose the multi-layer Cloud RAN architecture for implementing the new network, where the multi-domain resources can be exploited as needed for vehicle users. Then, the high-level design of soft-defined HetVNET is presented in detail. Finally, we briefly discuss key challenges and solutions for this new network, corroborating its feasibility in the emerging fifth-generation (5G) era.

Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Techniques for Physical Layer Security: AF or DF?

In this paper, we consider a large scale multiple input multiple output (LS-MIMO) relaying system, where an information source sends the message to its intended destination aided by an LS-MIMO relay, while a passive eavesdropper tries to intercept the information forwarded by the relay. The advantage of a large scale antenna array is exploited to improve spectral efficiency and enhance wireless security. In particular, the challenging issue incurred by short-distance interception is well addressed. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate CSI at the relay, this paper gives a thorough secrecy performance analysis and comparison of two classic relaying techniques, i.e., amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF). Furthermore, asymptotical analysis is carried out to provide clear insights on the secrecy performance for such an LS-MIMO relaying system. We show that under large transmit powers, AF is a better choice than DF from the perspectives of both secrecy performance and implementation complexity, and prove that there exits an optimal transmit power at medium regime that maximizes the secrecy outage capacity.

Optimal Cell Clustering and Activation for Energy Saving in Load-Coupled Wireless Networks

Optimizing activation and deactivation of base station transmissions provides an instrument for improving energy efficiency in cellular networks. In this paper, we study optimal cell clustering and scheduling of activation duration for each cluster, with the objective of minimizing the sum energy, subject to a time constraint of delivering the users' traffic demand. The cells within a cluster are simultaneously in transmission and napping modes, with cluster activation and deactivation, respectively. Our optimization framework accounts for the coupling relation among cells due to the mutual interference. Thus, the users' achievable rates in a cell depend on the cluster composition. On the theoretical side, we provide mathematical formulation and structural characterization for the energy-efficient cell clustering and scheduling optimization problem, and prove its NP hardness. On the algorithmic side, we first show how column generation facilitates problem solving, and then present our notion of local enumeration as a flexible and effective means for dealing with the trade-off between optimality and the combinatorial nature of cluster formation, as well as for the purpose of gauging the deviation from optimality. Numerical results demonstrate that our solutions achieve more than 60% energy saving over existing schemes, and that the solutions we obtain are within a few percent of deviation from global optimum.

Optimal Power Allocation for Secure Communications in Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Systems

In this paper, we address the problem of optimal power allocation at the relay in two-hop secure communications. In order to solve the challenging issue of short-distance interception in secure communications, the benefit of large-scale MIMO (LS-MIMO) relaying techniques is exploited to improve the secrecy performance significantly, even in the case without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI). The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power allocation for the relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity. We reveal the condition that the secrecy outage capacity is positive, prove that there is one and only one optimal power, and present an optimal power allocation scheme. Moreover, the asymptotic characteristics of the secrecy outage capacity is carried out to provide some clear insights for secrecy performance optimization. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

On Power and Load Coupling in Cellular Networks for Energy Optimization

We consider the problem of minimization of sum transmission energy in cellular networks where coupling occurs between cells due to mutual interference. The coupling relation is characterized by the signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) coupling model. Both cell load and transmission power, where cell load measures the average level of resource usage in the cell, interact via the coupling model. The coupling is implicitly characterized with load and power as the variables of interest using two equivalent equations, namely, non-linear load coupling equation (NLCE) and non-linear power coupling equation (NPCE), respectively. By analyzing the NLCE and NPCE, we prove that operating at full load is optimal in minimizing sum energy, and provide an iterative power adjustment algorithm to obtain the corresponding optimal power solution with guaranteed convergence, where in each iteration a standard bisection search is employed. To obtain the algorithmic result, we use the properties of the so-called standard interference function; the proof is non-standard because the NPCE cannot even be expressed as a closed-form expression with power as the implicit variable of interest. We present numerical results illustrating the theoretical findings for a real-life and large-scale cellular network, showing the advantage of our solution compared to the conventional solution of deploying uniform power for base stations.

Energy-Efficient Power Allocation for Secure Communications in Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Systems

In this paper, we address the problem of energy-efficient power allocation for secure communications in an amplify-and-forward (AF) large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) relaying system in presence of a passive eavesdropper. The benefits of an AF LS-MIMO relay are exploited to significantly improve the secrecy performance, especially the secrecy energy efficiency (bit per Joule). We first analyze the impact of transmit power at the relay on the secrecy outage capacity, and prove that the secrecy outage capacity is a concave function of transmit power under very practical assumptions, i.e. no eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate CSI. Then, we propose an energy-efficient power allocation scheme to maximize the secrecy energy efficiency. Finally, simulation results validate the advantage of the proposed energy-efficient scheme compared to the capacity maximization scheme.

On the Secrecy Outage Capacity of Physical Layer Security in Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Systems with Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) relaying system. The advantage of LS-MIMO relaying systems is exploited to enhance both wireless security and spectral efficiency. In particular, the challenging issue incurred by short interception distance is well addressed. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate channel CSI, this paper gives a thorough investigation of the impact of imperfect CSI in two classic relaying systems, i.e., amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) systems, and obtain explicit expressions of secrecy outage capacities for both cases. Finally, our theoretical claims are validated by the numerical results.
