Energy absorbency and phase stability during NaCl solution icing

NaCl solvation turns the fS portion molecules into the hydrating supersolid phase by ionic polarization and leaves the rest fO portion ordinary. Polarization shortens and stiffens the HO bond and does the O:H nonbond contrastingly in the supersolid. Water absorbs energy by HO cooling contraction in the quasisolid phase during the transition from Liquid to Quasisolid and then Ice The solution R drops with the fO loss till zero corresponding to 10 water molecules that saturates the solvation per solute at least. The polarization-weakening of the O H nonbonds lowers the TN to 253 K or below of the supersolid phase.

Text AutoAugment: Learning Compositional Augmentation Policy for Text Classification

Data augmentation aims to enrich training samples for alleviating the overfitting issue in low-resource or class-imbalanced situations. Traditional methods first devise task-specific operations such as Synonym Substitute, then preset the corresponding parameters such as the substitution rate artificially, which require a lot of prior knowledge and are prone to fall into the sub-optimum. Besides, the number of editing operations is limited in the previous methods, which decreases the diversity of the augmented data and thus restricts the performance gain. To overcome the above limitations, we propose a framework named Text AutoAugment (TAA) to establish a compositional and learnable paradigm for data augmentation. We regard a combination of various operations as an augmentation policy and utilize an efficient Bayesian Optimization algorithm to automatically search for the best policy, which substantially improves the generalization capability of models. Experiments on six benchmark datasets show that TAA boosts classification accuracy in low-resource and class-imbalanced regimes by an average of 8.8% and 9.7%, respectively, outperforming strong baselines.

UniKeyphrase: A Unified Extraction and Generation Framework for Keyphrase Prediction

Keyphrase Prediction (KP) task aims at predicting several keyphrases that can summarize the main idea of the given document. Mainstream KP methods can be categorized into purely generative approaches and integrated models with extraction and generation. However, these methods either ignore the diversity among keyphrases or only weakly capture the relation across tasks implicitly. In this paper, we propose UniKeyphrase, a novel end-to-end learning framework that jointly learns to extract and generate keyphrases. In UniKeyphrase, stacked relation layer and bag-of-words constraint are proposed to fully exploit the latent semantic relation between extraction and generation in the view of model structure and training process, respectively. Experiments on KP benchmarks demonstrate that our joint approach outperforms mainstream methods by a large margin.

Unsupervised Multi-Modality Registration Network based on Spatially Encoded Gradient Information

Multi-modality medical images can provide relevant or complementary information for a target (organ, tumor or tissue). Registering multi-modality images to a common space can fuse these comprehensive information, and bring convenience for clinical application. Recently, neural networks have been widely investigated to boost registration methods. However, it is still challenging to develop a multi-modality registration network due to the lack of robust criteria for network training. In this work, we propose a multi-modality registration network (MMRegNet), which can perform registration between multi-modality images. Meanwhile, we present spatially encoded gradient information to train MMRegNet in an unsupervised manner. The proposed network was evaluated on MM-WHS 2017. Results show that MMRegNet can achieve promising performance for left ventricle cardiac registration tasks. Meanwhile, to demonstrate the versatility of MMRegNet, we further evaluate the method with a liver dataset from CHAOS 2019. Source code will be released publicly\footnote{https://github.com/NanYoMy/mmregnet} once the manuscript is accepted.

Secoco: Self-Correcting Encoding for Neural Machine Translation

This paper presents Self-correcting Encoding (Secoco), a framework that effectively deals with input noise for robust neural machine translation by introducing self-correcting predictors. Different from previous robust approaches, Secoco enables NMT to explicitly correct noisy inputs and delete specific errors simultaneously with the translation decoding process. Secoco is able to achieve significant improvements over strong baselines on two real-world test sets and a benchmark WMT dataset with good interpretability. We will make our code and dataset publicly available soon.

ICM-3D: Instantiated Category Modeling for 3D Instance Segmentation

Separating 3D point clouds into individual instances is an important task for 3D vision. It is challenging due to the unknown and varying number of instances in a scene. Existing deep learning based works focus on a two-step pipeline: first learn a feature embedding and then cluster the points. Such a two-step pipeline leads to disconnected intermediate objectives. In this paper, we propose an integrated reformulation of 3D instance segmentation as a per-point classification problem. We propose ICM-3D, a single-step method to segment 3D instances via instantiated categorization. The augmented category information is automatically constructed from 3D spatial positions. We conduct extensive experiments to verify the effectiveness of ICM-3D and show that it obtains inspiring performance across multiple frameworks, backbones and benchmarks.

Atomic bonding and binding energy of two-dimensional Bi/Li(110) heterojunctions via BOLS and BB model

Combining the bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) and bonding and binding energy (BB) models with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we studied the atomic bonding and binding energy behavior of Bi atoms adsorbed on the Li(110) surface. We found that the Bi atoms adsorbed on the Li(110) surface form two-dimensional (2D) geometric structures, including letter-, hexagon-, galaxy-, crown-, field-, and cobweb-shaped structures. Thus, we obtained the following quantitative information: (i) the field-shaped structure can be considered the bulk structure; (ii) the field-shaped structure of Bi atom formation has a 5d energy level of 22.727 eV, and in the letter shape structure, this energy is shifted to values greater than 0.342 eV;and (iii) the Bi/Li(110) heterojunction transfers charge from the inner Li atomic layer to the outermost Bi atomic layer. In addition, we analyzed the bonding and electronic dynamics involved in the formation of the Bi/Li(110) heterojunctions using zone-selective electron spectroscopy technology. This work provides a theoretical reference for the fine tuning of binding energies and chemical bonding at the interfaces of 2D metallic materials.

Sharp estimates for a nonlocal diffusion problem with a free boundary

In this paper, we proceed to study the nonlocal diffusion problem proposed by Li and Wang [8], where the left boundary is fixed, while the right boundary is a nonlocal free boundary. We first give some accurate estimates on the longtime behavior by constructing lower solutions, and then investigate the limiting profiles of this problem when the expanding coefficient of free boundary converges to $0$ and $\yy$, respectively. At last, we focus on two important kinds of kernel functions, one of which is compactly supported and the other behaves like $|x|^{-γ}$ with $γ\in(1,2]$ near infinity. With the help of some upper and lower solutions, we obtain some sharp estimates on the longtime behavior and rate of accelerated spreading.

Learning Shared Semantic Space for Speech-to-Text Translation

Having numerous potential applications and great impact, end-to-end speech translation (ST) has long been treated as an independent task, failing to fully draw strength from the rapid advances of its sibling - text machine translation (MT). With text and audio inputs represented differently, the modality gap has rendered MT data and its end-to-end models incompatible with their ST counterparts. In observation of this obstacle, we propose to bridge this representation gap with Chimera. By projecting audio and text features to a common semantic representation, Chimera unifies MT and ST tasks and boosts the performance on ST benchmarks, MuST-C and Augmented Librispeech, to a new state-of-the-art. Specifically, Chimera obtains 27.1 BLEU on MuST-C EN-DE, improving the SOTA by a +1.9 BLEU margin. Further experimental analyses demonstrate that the shared semantic space indeed conveys common knowledge between these two tasks and thus paves a new way for augmenting training resources across modalities. Code, data, and resources are available at https://github.com/Glaciohound/Chimera-ST.

Learning to Design and Construct Bridge without Blueprint

Autonomous assembly has been a desired functionality of many intelligent robot systems. We study a new challenging assembly task, designing and constructing a bridge without a blueprint. In this task, the robot needs to first design a feasible bridge architecture for arbitrarily wide cliffs and then manipulate the blocks reliably to construct a stable bridge according to the proposed design. In this paper, we propose a bi-level approach to tackle this task. At the high level, the system learns a bridge blueprint policy in a physical simulator using deep reinforcement learning and curriculum learning. A policy is represented as an attention-based neural network with object-centric input, which enables generalization to different numbers of blocks and cliff widths. For low-level control, we implement a motion-planning-based policy for real-robot motion control, which can be directly combined with a trained blueprint policy for real-world bridge construction without tuning. In our field study, our bi-level robot system demonstrates the capability of manipulating blocks to construct a diverse set of bridges with different architectures.

Learning Language Specific Sub-network for Multilingual Machine Translation

Multilingual neural machine translation aims at learning a single translation model for multiple languages. These jointly trained models often suffer from performance degradation on rich-resource language pairs. We attribute this degeneration to parameter interference. In this paper, we propose LaSS to jointly train a single unified multilingual MT model. LaSS learns Language Specific Sub-network (LaSS) for each language pair to counter parameter interference. Comprehensive experiments on IWSLT and WMT datasets with various Transformer architectures show that LaSS obtains gains on 36 language pairs by up to 1.2 BLEU. Besides, LaSS shows its strong generalization performance at easy extension to new language pairs and zero-shot translation.LaSS boosts zero-shot translation with an average of 8.3 BLEU on 30 language pairs. Codes and trained models are available at https://github.com/NLP-Playground/LaSS.

Contrastive Learning for Many-to-many Multilingual Neural Machine Translation

Existing multilingual machine translation approaches mainly focus on English-centric directions, while the non-English directions still lag behind. In this work, we aim to build a many-to-many translation system with an emphasis on the quality of non-English language directions. Our intuition is based on the hypothesis that a universal cross-language representation leads to better multilingual translation performance. To this end, we propose mRASP2, a training method to obtain a single unified multilingual translation model. mRASP2 is empowered by two techniques: a) a contrastive learning scheme to close the gap among representations of different languages, and b) data augmentation on both multiple parallel and monolingual data to further align token representations. For English-centric directions, mRASP2 outperforms existing best unified model and achieves competitive or even better performance than the pre-trained and fine-tuned model mBART on tens of WMT's translation directions. For non-English directions, mRASP2 achieves an improvement of average 10+ BLEU compared with the multilingual Transformer baseline. Code, data and trained models are available at https://github.com/PANXiao1994/mRASP2.

Follow Your Path: a Progressive Method for Knowledge Distillation

Deep neural networks often have a huge number of parameters, which posts challenges in deployment in application scenarios with limited memory and computation capacity. Knowledge distillation is one approach to derive compact models from bigger ones. However, it has been observed that a converged heavy teacher model is strongly constrained for learning a compact student network and could make the optimization subject to poor local optima. In this paper, we propose ProKT, a new model-agnostic method by projecting the supervision signals of a teacher model into the student's parameter space. Such projection is implemented by decomposing the training objective into local intermediate targets with an approximate mirror descent technique. The proposed method could be less sensitive with the quirks during optimization which could result in a better local optimum. Experiments on both image and text datasets show that our proposed ProKT consistently achieves superior performance compared to other existing knowledge distillation methods.

Cardiac Segmentation on Late Gadolinium Enhancement MRI: A Benchmark Study from Multi-Sequence Cardiac MR Segmentation Challenge

Accurate computing, analysis and modeling of the ventricles and myocardium from medical images are important, especially in the diagnosis and treatment management for patients suffering from myocardial infarction (MI). Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) provides an important protocol to visualize MI. However, automated segmentation of LGE CMR is still challenging, due to the indistinguishable boundaries, heterogeneous intensity distribution and complex enhancement patterns of pathological myocardium from LGE CMR. Furthermore, compared with the other sequences LGE CMR images with gold standard labels are particularly limited, which represents another obstacle for developing novel algorithms for automatic segmentation of LGE CMR. This paper presents the selective results from the Multi-Sequence Cardiac MR (MS-CMR) Segmentation challenge, in conjunction with MICCAI 2019. The challenge offered a data set of paired MS-CMR images, including auxiliary CMR sequences as well as LGE CMR, from 45 patients who underwent cardiomyopathy. It was aimed to develop new algorithms, as well as benchmark existing ones for LGE CMR segmentation and compare them objectively. In addition, the paired MS-CMR images could enable algorithms to combine the complementary information from the other sequences for the segmentation of LGE CMR. Nine representative works were selected for evaluation and comparisons, among which three methods are unsupervised methods and the other six are supervised. The results showed that the average performance of the nine methods was comparable to the inter-observer variations. The success of these methods was mainly attributed to the inclusion of the auxiliary sequences from the MS-CMR images, which provide important label information for the training of deep neural networks.

UniRE: A Unified Label Space for Entity Relation Extraction

Many joint entity relation extraction models setup two separated label spaces for the two sub-tasks (i.e., entity detection and relation classification). We argue that this setting may hinder the information interaction between entities and relations. In this work, we propose to eliminate the different treatment on the two sub-tasks' label spaces. The input of our model is a table containing all word pairs from a sentence. Entities and relations are represented by squares and rectangles in the table. We apply a unified classifier to predict each cell's label, which unifies the learning of two sub-tasks. For testing, an effective (yet fast) approximate decoder is proposed for finding squares and rectangles from tables. Experiments on three benchmarks (ACE04, ACE05, SciERC) show that, using only half the number of parameters, our model achieves competitive accuracy with the best extractor, and is faster.

Probabilistic Graph Reasoning for Natural Proof Generation

In this paper, we investigate the problem of reasoning over natural language statements. Prior neural based approaches do not explicitly consider the inter-dependency among answers and their proofs. In this paper, we propose PRobr, a novel approach for joint answer prediction and proof generation. PRobr defines a joint probabilistic distribution over all possible proof graphs and answers via an induced graphical model. We then optimize the model using variational approximation on top of neural textual representation. Experiments on multiple datasets under diverse settings (fully supervised, few-shot and zero-shot evaluation) verify the effectiveness of PRobr, e.g., achieving 10%-30% improvement on QA accuracy in few/zero-shot evaluation. Our codes and models can be found at https://github.com/changzhisun/PRobr/.

AtrialGeneral: Domain Generalization for Left Atrial Segmentation of Multi-Center LGE MRIs

Left atrial (LA) segmentation from late gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (LGE MRI) is a crucial step needed for planning the treatment of atrial fibrillation. However, automatic LA segmentation from LGE MRI is still challenging, due to the poor image quality, high variability in LA shapes, and unclear LA boundary. Though deep learning-based methods can provide promising LA segmentation results, they often generalize poorly to unseen domains, such as data from different scanners and/or sites. In this work, we collect 210 LGE MRIs from different centers with different levels of image quality. To evaluate the domain generalization ability of models on the LA segmentation task, we employ four commonly used semantic segmentation networks for the LA segmentation from multi-center LGE MRIs. Besides, we investigate three domain generalization strategies, i.e., histogram matching, mutual information based disentangled representation, and random style transfer, where a simple histogram matching is proved to be most effective.

The Volctrans Neural Speech Translation System for IWSLT 2021

This paper describes the systems submitted to IWSLT 2021 by the Volctrans team. We participate in the offline speech translation and text-to-text simultaneous translation tracks. For offline speech translation, our best end-to-end model achieves 8.1 BLEU improvements over the benchmark on the MuST-C test set and is even approaching the results of a strong cascade solution. For text-to-text simultaneous translation, we explore the best practice to optimize the wait-k model. As a result, our final submitted systems exceed the benchmark at around 7 BLEU on the same latency regime. We will publish our code and model to facilitate both future research works and industrial applications. This paper describes the systems submitted to IWSLT 2021 by the Volctrans team.
