Computation Offloading for Edge Computing in RIS-Assisted Symbiotic Radio Systems

In the paper, we investigate the coordination process of sensing and computation offloading in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided base station (BS)-centric symbiotic radio (SR) systems. Specifically, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices first sense data from environment and then tackle the data locally or offload the data to BS for remote computing, while RISs are leveraged to enhance the quality of blocked channels and also act as IoT devices to transmit its sensed data. To explore the mechanism of cooperative sensing and computation offloading in this system, we aim at maximizing the total completed sensed bits of all users and RISs by jointly optimizing the time allocation parameter, the passive beamforming at each RIS, the transmit beamforming at BS, and the energy partition parameters for all users subject to the size of sensed data, energy supply and given time cycle. The formulated nonconvex problem is tightly coupled by the time allocation parameter and involves the mathematical expectations, which cannot be solved straightly. We use Monte Carlo and fractional programming methods to transform the nonconvex objective function and then propose an alternating optimization-based algorithm to find an approximate solution with guaranteed convergence. Numerical results show that the RIS-aided SR system outperforms other benchmarks in sensing. Furthermore, with the aid of RIS, the channel and system performance can be significantly improved.

Generalized Linear Systems with OAMP/VAMP Receiver: Achievable Rate and Coding Principle

The generalized linear system (GLS) has been widely used in wireless communications to evaluate the effect of nonlinear preprocessing on receiver performance. Generalized approximation message passing (AMP) is a state-of-the-art algorithm for the signal recovery of GLS, but it was limited to measurement matrices with independent and identically distributed (IID) elements. To relax this restriction, generalized orthogonal/vector AMP (GOAMP/GVAMP) for unitarily-invariant measurement matrices was established, which has been proven to be replica Bayes optimal in uncoded GLS. However, the information-theoretic limit of GOAMP/GVAMP is still an open challenge for arbitrary input distributions due to its complex state evolution (SE). To address this issue, in this paper, we provide the achievable rate analysis of GOAMP/GVAMP in GLS, establishing its information-theoretic limit (i.e., maximum achievable rate). Specifically, we transform the fully-unfolded state evolution (SE) of GOAMP/GVAMP into an equivalent single-input single-output variational SE (VSE). Using the VSE and the mutual information and minimum mean-square error (I-MMSE) lemma, the achievable rate of GOAMP/GVAMP is derived. Moreover, the optimal coding principle for maximizing the achievable rate is proposed, based on which a kind of low-density parity-check (LDPC) code is designed. Numerical results verify the achievable rate advantages of GOAMP/GVAMP over the conventional maximum ratio combining (MRC) receiver based on the linearized model and the BER performance gains of the optimized LDPC codes (0.8~2.8 dB) compared to the existing methods.

Assessing Vulnerabilities of Adversarial Learning Algorithm through Poisoning Attacks

Adversarial training (AT) is a robust learning algorithm that can defend against adversarial attacks in the inference phase and mitigate the side effects of corrupted data in the training phase. As such, it has become an indispensable component of many artificial intelligence (AI) systems. However, in high-stake AI applications, it is crucial to understand AT's vulnerabilities to ensure reliable deployment. In this paper, we investigate AT's susceptibility to poisoning attacks, a type of malicious attack that manipulates training data to compromise the performance of the trained model. Previous work has focused on poisoning attacks against standard training, but little research has been done on their effectiveness against AT. To fill this gap, we design and test effective poisoning attacks against AT. Specifically, we investigate and design clean-label poisoning attacks, allowing attackers to imperceptibly modify a small fraction of training data to control the algorithm's behavior on a specific target data point. Additionally, we propose the clean-label untargeted attack, enabling attackers can attach tiny stickers on training data to degrade the algorithm's performance on all test data, where the stickers could serve as a signal against unauthorized data collection. Our experiments demonstrate that AT can still be poisoned, highlighting the need for caution when using vanilla AT algorithms in security-related applications. The code is at https://github.com/zjfheart/Poison-adv-training.git.

The instabilities beyond modulational type in a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate with a periodic potential

The instabilities of the nontrivial phase elliptic solutions in a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a periodic potential are investigated. Based on the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with an elliptic function potential, the well-known modulational instability (MI), the more recently identified high-frequency instability, and an unprecedented -- to our knowledge -- variant of the MI, the so-called isola instability are identified numerically. Upon varying parameters of the solutions, instability transitions occur through the suitable bifurcations, such as the Hamiltonian Hope one. Specifically, (i) increasing the elliptic modulus $k$ of the solutions, we find that MI switches to the isola instability and the dominant disturbance has twice the elliptic wave's period, corresponding to a Floquet exponent $μ=\fracπ{2K(k)}$. The isola instability arises from the collision of spectral elements at the origin of the spectral plane. (ii) Upon varying $V_{0}$, the transition between MI and the high-frequency instability occurs. Differently from the MI and isola instability where the collisions of eigenvalues happen at the origin, high-frequency instability arises from pairwise collisions of nonzero, imaginary elements of the stability spectrum; (iii) In the limit of sinusoidal potential, we show that MI occurs from a collision of eigenvalues with $μ=\fracπ{2K(k)}$ at the origin; (iv) we also examine the dynamic byproducts of the instability in chaotic fields generated by its manifestation. An interesting observation is that, in addition to MI, the isola instability could also lead to dark localized events in the scalar defocusing NLS equation.

Multimodal Graph Learning for Deepfake Detection

Existing deepfake detectors face several challenges in achieving robustness and generalization. One of the primary reasons is their limited ability to extract relevant information from forgery videos, especially in the presence of various artifacts such as spatial, frequency, temporal, and landmark mismatches. Current detectors rely on pixel-level features that are easily affected by unknown disturbances or facial landmarks that do not provide sufficient information. Furthermore, most detectors cannot utilize information from multiple domains for detection, leading to limited effectiveness in identifying deepfake videos. To address these limitations, we propose a novel framework, namely Multimodal Graph Learning (MGL) that leverages information from multiple modalities using two GNNs and several multimodal fusion modules. At the frame level, we employ a bi-directional cross-modal transformer and an adaptive gating mechanism to combine the features from the spatial and frequency domains with the geometric-enhanced landmark features captured by a GNN. At the video level, we use a Graph Attention Network (GAT) to represent each frame in a video as a node in a graph and encode temporal information into the edges of the graph to extract temporal inconsistency between frames. Our proposed method aims to effectively identify and utilize distinguishing features for deepfake detection. We evaluate the effectiveness of our method through extensive experiments on widely-used benchmarks and demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art detectors in terms of generalization ability and robustness against unknown disturbances.

Orthogonal AMP for Problems with Multiple Measurement Vectors and/or Multiple Transforms

Approximate message passing (AMP) algorithms break a (high-dimensional) statistical problem into parts then repeatedly solve each part in turn, akin to alternating projections. A distinguishing feature is their asymptotic behaviours can be accurately predicted via their associated state evolution equations. Orthogonal AMP (OAMP) was recently developed to avoid the need for computing the so-called Onsager term in traditional AMP algorithms, providing two clear benefits: the derivation of an OAMP algorithm is both straightforward and more broadly applicable. OAMP was originally demonstrated for statistical problems with a single measurement vector and single transform. This paper extends OAMP to statistical problems with multiple measurement vectors (MMVs) and multiple transforms (MTs). We name the resulting algorithms as OAMP-MMV and OAMP-MT respectively, and their combination as augmented OAMP (A-OAMP). Whereas the extension of traditional AMP algorithms to such problems would be challenging, the orthogonal principle underpinning OAMP makes these extensions straightforward. The MMV and MT models are widely applicable to signal processing and communications. We present an example of MIMO relay system with correlated source data and signal clipping, which can be modelled as a joint MMV-MT system. While existing methods meet with difficulties in this example, OAMP offers an efficient solution with excellent performance.

FlexEdge: Digital Twin-Enabled Task Offloading for UAV-Aided Vehicular Edge Computing

Integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into vehicular networks have shown high potentials in affording intensive computing tasks. In this paper, we study the digital twin driven vehicular edge computing networks for adaptively computing resource management where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) named FlexEdge acts as a flying server. In particular, we first formulate an energy consumption minimization problem by jointly optimizing UAV trajectory and computation resource under the practical constraints. To address such a challenging problem, we then build the computation offloading process as a Markov decision process and propose a deep reinforcement learning-based proximal policy optimization algorithm to dynamically learn the computation offloading strategy and trajectory design policy. Numerical results indicate that our proposed algorithm can achieve quick convergence rate and significantly reduce the system energy consumption.

Low-Complexity Memory AMP Detector for High-Mobility MIMO-OTFS SCMA Systems

Efficient signal detectors are rather important yet challenging to achieve satisfactory performance for large-scale communication systems. This paper considers a non-orthogonal sparse code multiple access (SCMA) configuration for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. We develop a novel low-complexity yet effective customized Memory approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm for channel equalization and multi-user detection. Specifically, the proposed Memory AMP detector enjoys the sparsity of the channel matrix and only applies matrix-vector multiplications in each iteration for low-complexity. To alleviate the performance degradation caused by positive reinforcement problem in the iterative process, all the preceding messages are utilized to guarantee the orthogonality principle in Memory AMP detector. Simulation results are finally provided to illustrate the superiority of our Memory AMP detector over the existing solutions.

Periodic traveling waves in the ϕ^4 model: Instability, stability and localized structures

We consider the instability and stability of periodic stationary solutions to the classical ϕ^4 equation numerically. In the superluminal regime, the model possesses dnoidal and cnoidal waves. The former are modulationally unstable and the spectrum forms a figure eight intersecting at the origin of the spectral plane. The latter can be modulationally stable and the spectrum near the origin in that case is represented by vertical bands along the purely imaginary axis. The instability of the cnoidal states in that case stems from elliptical bands of complex eigenvalues far from the spectral plane origin. In the subluminal regime, there exist only snoidal waves which are modulationally unstable. Considering the subharmonic perturbations, we show that the snoidal waves in the subluminal regime are spectrally unstable with respect to all subharmonic perturbations, while for the dnoidal and cnoidal waves in the superluminal regime, the transition between the spectrally stable state and the spectrally unstable state occurs through a Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation. The dynamical evolution of the unstable states is also considered, leading to some interesting spatio-temporal localization events.

Spatio-Temporal Structure Consistency for Semi-supervised Medical Image Classification

Intelligent medical diagnosis has shown remarkable progress based on the large-scale datasets with precise annotations. However, fewer labeled images are available due to significantly expensive cost for annotating data by experts. To fully exploit the easily available unlabeled data, we propose a novel Spatio-Temporal Structure Consistent (STSC) learning framework. Specifically, a gram matrix is derived to combine the spatial structure consistency and temporal structure consistency together. This gram matrix captures the structural similarity among the representations of different training samples. At the spatial level, our framework explicitly enforces the consistency of structural similarity among different samples under perturbations. At the temporal level, we consider the consistency of the structural similarity in different training iterations by digging out the stable sub-structures in a relation graph. Experiments on two medical image datasets (i.e., ISIC 2018 challenge and ChestX-ray14) show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art SSL methods. Furthermore, extensive qualitative analysis on the Gram matrices and heatmaps by Grad-CAM are presented to validate the effectiveness of our method.

Cross-Modal Mutual Learning for Cued Speech Recognition

Automatic Cued Speech Recognition (ACSR) provides an intelligent human-machine interface for visual communications, where the Cued Speech (CS) system utilizes lip movements and hand gestures to code spoken language for hearing-impaired people. Previous ACSR approaches often utilize direct feature concatenation as the main fusion paradigm. However, the asynchronous modalities i.e., lip, hand shape and hand position) in CS may cause interference for feature concatenation. To address this challenge, we propose a transformer based cross-modal mutual learning framework to prompt multi-modal interaction. Compared with the vanilla self-attention, our model forces modality-specific information of different modalities to pass through a modality-invariant codebook, collating linguistic representations for tokens of each modality. Then the shared linguistic knowledge is used to re-synchronize multi-modal sequences. Moreover, we establish a novel large-scale multi-speaker CS dataset for Mandarin Chinese. To our knowledge, this is the first work on ACSR for Mandarin Chinese. Extensive experiments are conducted for different languages i.e., Chinese, French, and British English). Results demonstrate that our model exhibits superior recognition performance to the state-of-the-art by a large margin.

ATA-Cache: Contention Mitigation for GPU Shared L1 Cache with Aggregated Tag Array

GPU shared L1 cache is a promising architecture while still suffering from high resource contentions. We present a GPU shared L1 cache architecture with an aggregated tag array that minimizes the L1 cache contentions and takes full advantage of inter-core locality. The key idea is to decouple and aggregate the tag arrays of multiple L1 caches so that the cache requests can be compared with all tag arrays in parallel to probe the replicated data in other caches. The GPU caches are only accessed by other GPU cores when replicated data exists, filtering out unnecessary cache accesses that cause high resource contentions. The experimental results show that GPU IPC can be improved by 12% on average for applications with a high inter-core locality.

Prescribed Time Time-varying Output Formation Tracking for Uncertain Heterogeneous Multi-agent Systems

The time-varying output formation tracking for the heterogeneous multi-agent systems (MAS) is investigated in this paper. First, a distributed observer is constructed for followers to estimate the states of the leader, which can ensure that the estimation error converges to the origin in the prescribed time. Then, the local formation controller is designed for each follower based on the estimation of the observer, under which, the formation errors converge to the origin in the prescribed time as well. That is, the settling time of the whole system can be predefined in advance. It's noted that not only the uncertainties in the state matrix but also the uncertainties in the input matrix are considered, which makes the problem more practical. Last, a simulation is performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Context Matters: A Strategy to Pre-train Language Model for Science Education

This study aims at improving the performance of scoring student responses in science education automatically. BERT-based language models have shown significant superiority over traditional NLP models in various language-related tasks. However, science writing of students, including argumentation and explanation, is domain-specific. In addition, the language used by students is different from the language in journals and Wikipedia, which are training sources of BERT and its existing variants. All these suggest that a domain-specific model pre-trained using science education data may improve model performance. However, the ideal type of data to contextualize pre-trained language model and improve the performance in automatically scoring student written responses remains unclear. Therefore, we employ different data in this study to contextualize both BERT and SciBERT models and compare their performance on automatic scoring of assessment tasks for scientific argumentation. We use three datasets to pre-train the model: 1) journal articles in science education, 2) a large dataset of students' written responses (sample size over 50,000), and 3) a small dataset of students' written responses of scientific argumentation tasks. Our experimental results show that in-domain training corpora constructed from science questions and responses improve language model performance on a wide variety of downstream tasks. Our study confirms the effectiveness of continual pre-training on domain-specific data in the education domain and demonstrates a generalizable strategy for automating science education tasks with high accuracy. We plan to release our data and SciEdBERT models for public use and community engagement.

On Orthogonal Approximate Message Passing

Approximate Message Passing (AMP) is an efficient iterative parameter-estimation technique for certain high-dimensional linear systems with non-Gaussian distributions, such as sparse systems. In AMP, a so-called Onsager term is added to keep estimation errors approximately Gaussian. Orthogonal AMP (OAMP) does not require this Onsager term, relying instead on an orthogonalization procedure to keep the current errors uncorrelated with (i.e., orthogonal to) past errors. \LL{In this paper, we show the generality and significance of the orthogonality in ensuring that errors are "asymptotically independently and identically distributed Gaussian" (AIIDG).} This AIIDG property, which is essential for the attractive performance of OAMP, holds for separable functions. \LL{We present a simple and versatile procedure to establish the orthogonality through Gram-Schmidt (GS) orthogonalization, which is applicable to any prototype. We show that different AMP-type algorithms, such as expectation propagation (EP), turbo, AMP and OAMP, can be unified under the orthogonal principle.} The simplicity and generality of OAMP provide efficient solutions for estimation problems beyond the classical linear models. \LL{As an example, we study the optimization of OAMP via the GS model and GS orthogonalization.} More related applications will be discussed in a companion paper where new algorithms are developed for problems with multiple constraints and multiple measurement variables.

Mitigation of Spatial Nonstationarity with Vision Transformers

Spatial nonstationarity, the location variance of features' statistical distributions, is ubiquitous in many natural settings. For example, in geological reservoirs rock matrix porosity varies vertically due to geomechanical compaction trends, in mineral deposits grades vary due to sedimentation and concentration processes, in hydrology rainfall varies due to the atmosphere and topography interactions, and in metallurgy crystalline structures vary due to differential cooling. Conventional geostatistical modeling workflows rely on the assumption of stationarity to be able to model spatial features for the geostatistical inference. Nevertheless, this is often not a realistic assumption when dealing with nonstationary spatial data and this has motivated a variety of nonstationary spatial modeling workflows such as trend and residual decomposition, cosimulation with secondary features, and spatial segmentation and independent modeling over stationary subdomains. The advent of deep learning technologies has enabled new workflows for modeling spatial relationships. However, there is a paucity of demonstrated best practice and general guidance on mitigation of spatial nonstationarity with deep learning in the geospatial context. We demonstrate the impact of two common types of geostatistical spatial nonstationarity on deep learning model prediction performance and propose the mitigation of such impacts using self-attention (vision transformer) models. We demonstrate the utility of vision transformers for the mitigation of nonstationarity with relative errors as low as 10%, exceeding the performance of alternative deep learning methods such as convolutional neural networks. We establish best practice by demonstrating the ability of self-attention networks for modeling large-scale spatial relationships in the presence of commonly observed geospatial nonstationarity.

Utility Maximizer or Value Maximizer: Mechanism Design for Mixed Bidders in Online Advertising

Digital advertising constitutes one of the main revenue sources for online platforms. In recent years, some advertisers tend to adopt auto-bidding tools to facilitate advertising performance optimization, making the classical \emph{utility maximizer} model in auction theory not fit well. Some recent studies proposed a new model, called \emph{value maximizer}, for auto-bidding advertisers with return-on-investment (ROI) constraints. However, the model of either utility maximizer or value maximizer could only characterize partial advertisers in real-world advertising platforms. In a mixed environment where utility maximizers and value maximizers coexist, the truthful ad auction design would be challenging since bidders could manipulate both their values and affiliated classes, leading to a multi-parameter mechanism design problem. In this work, we address this issue by proposing a payment rule which combines the corresponding ones in classical VCG and GSP mechanisms in a novel way. Based on this payment rule, we propose a truthful auction mechanism with an approximation ratio of $2$ on social welfare, which is close to the lower bound of at least $\frac{5}{4}$ that we also prove. The designed auction mechanism is a generalization of VCG for utility maximizers and GSP for value maximizers.

Parameter-Efficient Transformer with Hybrid Axial-Attention for Medical Image Segmentation

Transformers have achieved remarkable success in medical image analysis owing to their powerful capability to use flexible self-attention mechanism. However, due to lacking intrinsic inductive bias in modeling visual structural information, they generally require a large-scale pre-training schedule, limiting the clinical applications over expensive small-scale medical data. To this end, we propose a parameter-efficient transformer to explore intrinsic inductive bias via position information for medical image segmentation. Specifically, we empirically investigate how different position encoding strategies affect the prediction quality of the region of interest (ROI), and observe that ROIs are sensitive to the position encoding strategies. Motivated by this, we present a novel Hybrid Axial-Attention (HAA), a form of position self-attention that can be equipped with spatial pixel-wise information and relative position information as inductive bias. Moreover, we introduce a gating mechanism to alleviate the burden of training schedule, resulting in efficient feature selection over small-scale datasets. Experiments on the BraTS and Covid19 datasets prove the superiority of our method over the baseline and previous works. Internal workflow visualization with interpretability is conducted to better validate our success.
