Emergent gravity fails to explain color-dependent galaxy-galaxy lensing signals from SDSS Dr7

We test the Emergent Gravity(EG) theory using the galaxy-galaxy lensing technique based on SDSS DR7 data. In the EG scenario, we do not expect color dependence of the galaxy sample in the 'apparent dark matter' predicted by EG, which is exerted only by the baryonic mass. If the baryonic mass is similar, then the predicted lensing profiles from the baryonic mass should be similar according to the EG, regardless of the color of the galaxy sample. We use the stellar mass of the galaxy as a proxy of its baryonic mass. We divide our galaxy sample into 5 stellar mass bins, and further classify them as red and blue subsamples in each stellar mass bin. If we set halo mass and concentration as free parameters, $Λ$CDM is favored by our data in terms of the reduced $χ^2$ while EG fails to explain the color dependence of ESDs from the galaxy-galaxy lensing measurement.

Pinpointing the Memory Behaviors of DNN Training

The training of deep neural networks (DNNs) is usually memory-hungry due to the limited device memory capacity of DNN accelerators. Characterizing the memory behaviors of DNN training is critical to optimize the device memory pressures. In this work, we pinpoint the memory behaviors of each device memory block of GPU during training by instrumenting the memory allocators of the runtime system. Our results show that the memory access patterns of device memory blocks are stable and follow an iterative fashion. These observations are useful for the future optimization of memory-efficient training from the perspective of raw memory access patterns.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enhanced D2D Cooperative Computing

This paper investigates a device-to-device (D2D) cooperative computing system, where an user can offload part of its computation task to nearby idle users with the aid of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). We propose to minimize the total computing delay via jointly optimizing the computation task assignment, transmit power, bandwidth allocation, and phase beamforming of the IRS. To solve the formulated problem, we devise an alternating optimization algorithm with guaranteed convergence. In particular, the task assignment strategy is derived in closed-form expression, while the phase beamforming is optimized by exploiting the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method. Numerical results demonstrate that the IRS enhanced D2D cooperative computing scheme can achieve a much lower computing delay as compared to the conventional D2D cooperative computing strategy.

An Interpretable Mapping from a Communication System to a Neural Network for Optimal Transceiver-Joint Equalization

In this paper, we propose a scheme that utilizes the optimization ability of artificial intelligence (AI) for optimal transceiver-joint equalization in compensating for the optical filtering impairments caused by wavelength selective switches (WSS). In contrast to adding or replacing a certain module of existing digital signal processing (DSP), we exploit the similarity between a communication system and a neural network (NN). By mapping a communication system to an NN, in which the equalization modules correspond to the convolutional layers and other modules can been regarded as static layers, the optimal transceiver-joint equalization coefficients can be obtained. In particular, the DSP structure of the communication system is not changed. Extensive numerical simulations are performed to validate the performance of the proposed method. For a 65 GBaud 16QAM signal, it can achieve a 0.76 dB gain when the number of WSSs is 16 with a -6 dB bandwidth of 73 GHz.

Microscopic kinetics pathway of salt crystallization in graphene nanocapillaries

The fundamental understanding of crystallization, in terms of microscopic kinetic and thermodynamic details, remains a key challenge in the physical sciences. Here, by using in situ graphene liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, we reveal the atomistic mechanism of NaCl crystallization from solutions confined within graphene cells. We find that rock salt NaCl forms with a peculiar hexagonal morphology. We also see the emergence of a transitory graphite-like phase, which may act as an intermediate in a two-step pathway. With the aid of density functional theory calculations, we propose that these observations result from a delicate balance between the substrate-solute interaction and thermodynamics under confinement. Our results highlight the impact of confinement on both the kinetics and thermodynamics of crystallization, offering new insights into heterogeneous crystallization theory and a potential avenue for materials design.

Semi-Supervised Active Learning for COVID-19 Lung Ultrasound Multi-symptom Classification

Ultrasound (US) is a non-invasive yet effective medical diagnostic imaging technique for the COVID-19 global pandemic. However, due to complex feature behaviors and expensive annotations of US images, it is difficult to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisting approaches for lung's multi-symptom (multi-label) classification. To overcome these difficulties, we propose a novel semi-supervised Two-Stream Active Learning (TSAL) method to model complicated features and reduce labeling costs in an iterative procedure. The core component of TSAL is the multi-label learning mechanism, in which label correlations information is used to design multi-label margin (MLM) strategy and confidence validation for automatically selecting informative samples and confident labels. On this basis, a multi-symptom multi-label (MSML) classification network is proposed to learn discriminative features of lung symptoms, and a human-machine interaction is exploited to confirm the final annotations that are used to fine-tune MSML with progressively labeled data. Moreover, a novel lung US dataset named COVID19-LUSMS is built, currently containing 71 clinical patients with 6,836 images sampled from 678 videos. Experimental evaluations show that TSAL using only 20% data can achieve superior performance to the baseline and the state-of-the-art. Qualitatively, visualization of both attention map and sample distribution confirms the good consistency with the clinic knowledge.

A Case Study of Space-time Performance Comparison of Wind Turbines on a Wind Farm

This paper presents an academia-industry joint case study, which was conducted to quantify and compare multi-year changes in power production performance of multiple turbines scattered over a mid-size wind farm. This analysis is referred to as a space-time performance comparison. One key aspect in power performance analysis is to have the wind and environmental inputs controlled for. This research employs, in a sequential fashion, two principal modeling components to exercise tight control of multiple input conditions -- a covariate matching method, followed by a Gaussian process model-based functional comparison. The analysis method is applied to a wind farm that houses 66 turbines on a moderately complex terrain. The power production and environmental data span nearly four years, during which period the turbines have gone through multiple technical upgrades. The space-time analysis presents a quantitative and global picture showing how turbines differ relative to each other as well as how each of them changes over time.

Efficient electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO by soft functional materials

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO is a promising strategy. However, achieving high Faradaic efficiency with high current density using ILs electrolyte remains a challenge. In this study, the IL N octyltrimethyl 1,2,4 triazole ammonium shows outstanding performance for electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO on the commercial Ag electrode, and the current density can be up to 50.8 mA cm-2 with a Faradaic efficiency of 90.6%. The current density of CO is much higher than those reported in the ILs electrolyte. In addition, the density functional theory calculation further proved that IL interacts with CO2 to form IL CO2 complex which played a key role in reducing the activation energy of CO2. According to the molecular orbital theory, the electrons obtained from ILs was filled in the anti bonding orbit of the CO2, resulting in reducing the C=O bond energy. This work provides a new strategy to design novel ILs for high efficiency electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO.

The effects of ionic liquids on the thermodynamics of H2 activation by frustrated Lewis pairs: a density functional theory study

Nowadays, hydrogen activation by frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) and their applications have been demonstrated to be one of emerge research topics in the field of catalysis. Previous studies have shown that the thermodynamics of these reaction is determined by electronic structures of FLPs and solvents. Herein, we investigated the systems consisting of typical FLPs and ionic liquids (ILs), which are well known by their large number of types and excellent solvent effects. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the thermodynamics for H2 activation by both inter- and intra-molecular FLPs, as well as the individual components. The results show that the computed overall Gibbs free energies in ILs are more negative than that computed in toluene. Through the thermodynamics partitioning, we find that ILs favor the H-H cleavage elemental step, while disfavored the elemental steps of proton attachment, hydride attachment and zwitterionic stabilization. Moreover, the results show that these effects are strongly dependent on the type of FLPs, where intra-molecular FLPs are more effected compared to the inter-molecular FLPs.

Mechanisms behind high CO2/CH4 selectivity using ZIF-8 metal organic frameworks with encapsulated ionic liquids: a computational study

CO2/CH4 separation using ionic liquids (ILs) encapsulated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), especially ZIF-8, has shown promise as a new technique for separating CO2 from CH4. However, the mechanisms behind the high CO2/CH4 selectivity of the method remains indistinct. Here we report the progress of understanding the mechanisms from examining the ZIF-8 aperture configuration variation using DFT and MD simulations. The results indicate that the pristine aperture configuration exhibits the best separation performance, and the addition of ILs prevents the apertures from large swing (i.e. configuration variation). Subsequently, the effect of IL viscosity on the layout variation was investigated. MD simulations also show that the pristine aperture configuration is more stabilized by ILs with large viscosity (0-87Cp). Further increase of IL viscosity above 87Cp did not result in noticeable changes in the aperture stability.

A molecular dynamics simulation study on the frustrated Lewis pairs in ionic liquids

Steric hindered frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been shown to activate hydrogen molecules, and their reactivity is strongly determined by the geometric parameters of the Lewis acid s and bases. A recent experimental study showed that ionic liquids (ILs) could largely improve the effective configuration of FLPs. However, the detailed mechanistic profile is still unclear. Herein, we performed a molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, aimi ng to reveal the effects of ILs on the structures of FLPs, and to present a rule for selecting more efficient reaction media. For this purpose, mixture systems were adopt consisting of the ILs [Cnmim][NTf2] (n= 6, 10, 14), and the typical FLP (tBu)3P/B(C6F5)3 . Radial distribution function (RDF) results show that toluene competes with (tBu)3P to interact with B(C6F5)3 , resulting in a relatively low effective (tBu)3P/B(C6F5)3 complex. [Cnmim][NTf2] is more intended to form a solvated shell surrounding the (tBu)3P/B(C6F5)3 , which increases the amount of effective FLPs. Spatial distribution function (SDF) results show that toluene formed a continuum solvation shell, which hinders the interactions of (tBu)3P and B(C6F5)3 , while [Cnmim][NTf2] leave a relatively large empty space, which is accessible by (tBu3)P molecules, resulting in a higher probability of Lewis acids and bases interactions. Lastly, we find that the longer alkyl chain length of[Cnmim] cations, the higher probability of effective FLPs.

Fusion-Catalyzed Pruning for Optimizing Deep Learning on Intelligent Edge Devices

The increasing computational cost of deep neural network models limits the applicability of intelligent applications on resource-constrained edge devices. While a number of neural network pruning methods have been proposed to compress the models, prevailing approaches focus only on parametric operators (e.g., convolution), which may miss optimization opportunities. In this paper, we present a novel fusion-catalyzed pruning approach, called FuPruner, which simultaneously optimizes the parametric and non-parametric operators for accelerating neural networks. We introduce an aggressive fusion method to equivalently transform a model, which extends the optimization space of pruning and enables non-parametric operators to be pruned in a similar manner as parametric operators, and a dynamic filter pruning method is applied to decrease the computational cost of models while retaining the accuracy requirement. Moreover, FuPruner provides configurable optimization options for controlling fusion and pruning, allowing much more flexible performance-accuracy trade-offs to be made. Evaluation with state-of-the-art residual neural networks on five representative intelligent edge platforms, Jetson TX2, Jetson Nano, Edge TPU, NCS, and NCS2, demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach, which can accelerate the inference of models on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets.

In Situ Epitaxy of Pure Phase Ultra-Thin InAs-Al Nanowires for Quantum Devices

Hybrid semiconductor-superconductor InAs-Al nanowires with uniform and defect-free crystal interfaces are one of the most promising candidates used in the quest for Majorana zero modes (MZMs). However, InAs nanowires often exhibit a high density of randomly distributed twin defects and stacking faults, which result in an uncontrolled and non-uniform InAs-Al interface. Furthermore, this type of disorder can create potential inhomogeneity in the wire, destroy the topological gap, and form trivial sub-gap states mimicking MZM in transport experiments. Further study shows that reducing the InAs nanowire diameter from growth can significantly suppress the formation of these defects and stacking faults. Here, we demonstrate the in situ growth of ultra-thin InAs nanowires with epitaxial Al film by molecular-beam epitaxy. Our InAs diameter (~ 30 nm) is only one-third of the diameters (~ 100 nm) commonly used in literatures. The ultra-thin InAs nanowires are pure phase crystals for various different growth directions, suggesting a low level of disorder. Transmission electron microscopy confirms an atomically sharp and uniform interface between the Al shell and the InAs wire. Quantum transport study on these devices resolves a hard induced superconducting gap and $2e^-$ periodic Coulomb blockade at zero magnetic field, a necessary step for future MZM experiments. A large zero bias conductance peak with a peak height reaching 80% of $2e^2/h$ is observed.

Anti-electrostatic hydrogen bonding between anions of ionic liquids: A density functional theory study

Hydrogen bonds (HBs) play a crucial role in the physicochemical properties of ionic liquids (ILs). At present, HBs between cations and anions (Ca-An) or between cations (Ca-Ca) in ILs have been reported extensively. Here, we provided DFT evidences for the exists of HBs between anions (An-An) in the IL 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)imidazolide [HEMIm][HEIm]. The thermodynamics stabilities of anionic, cationic, and H2O dimers together with ionic pairs were studied by potential energy scans. The results show that the cation-anion pair is the most stable one, while the HB in anionic dimer possesses similar thermodynamics stability to the water dimer. The further geometric, spectral and electronic structure analyses demonstrate that the inter-anionic HB meets the general theoretical criteria of traditional HBs. The strength order of four HBs in complexes is cation-anion pair > H2O dimer = cationic dimer > anionic dimer. The energy decomposition analysis indicates that induction and dispersion interactions are the crucial factors to overcome strong Coulomb repulsions, forming inter-anionic HBs. Lastly, the presence of inter-anionic HBs in ionic cluster has been confirmed by a global minimum search for a system containing two ionic pairs. Even though hydroxyl-functionalized cations are more likely to form HBs with anions, there still have inter-anionic HBs between hydroxyl groups in the low-lying structures. Our studies broaden the understanding of HBs in ionic liquids and support the recently proposed concept of anti-electrostatic HBs.

MID-Radio Telescope, Single Pixel Feed Packages for the Square Kilometre Array: An Overview

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project is an international effort to build the world s largest radio telescope, enabling science with unprecedented detail and survey speed. The project spans over a decade and is now at a mature stage, ready to enter the construction and integration phase. In the fully deployed state, the MID-Telescope consists of a 150-km diameter array of offset Gregorian antennas installed in the radio quiet zone of the Karoo desert (South Africa). Each antenna is equipped with three feed packages, that are precision positioned in the sub-reflector focus by a feed indexer platform. The total observational bandwidth (0.35-15.4GHz) is segmented into seven bands. Band 1 (0.35-1.05GHz) and Band 2 (0.95-1.76GHz) are implemented as individual feed packages. The remaining five bands (Bands 3, 4, 5a, 5b, and 6) are combined in a single feed package. Initially only Band 5a (4.6-8.5GHz) and Band 5b (8.3-15.4GHz) will be installed. This paper provides an overview of recent progress on design, test and integration of each feed package as well as project and science goals, timeline and path to construction.

The blow-up analysis of an affine Toda system corresponding to superconformal minimal surfaces in ${\mathbb S}^4$

In this paper, we study the blow-up analysis of an affine Toda system corresponding to minimal surfaces into ${\mathbb S}^4$ [19]. This system is an integrable system which is a natural generalization of sinh-Gordon equation [18]. By exploring a refined blow-up analysis in the bubble domain, we prove that the blow-up values are multiple of $8π$, which generalizes the previous results proved in \cite{Spruck, OS, Jost-Wang-Ye-Zhou, Jevnikar-Wei-Yang} for the sinh-Gordon equation. Let $(u_k^1,u_k^2, u^3_k)$ be a sequence of solutions of \begin{align*} -Δu^1&=e^{u^1}-e^{u^3},\\ -Δu^2&=e^{u^2}-e^{u^3},\\ -Δu^3&=-\frac{1}{2}e^{u^1}-\frac{1}{2}e^{u^2}+ e^{u^3},\\ u^1+u^2+2u^3&=0, \end{align*} in $B_1(0)$, which has a uniformly bounded energy in $B_1(0)$, a uniformly bounded oscillation on $\partial B_1(0)$ and blows up at an isolated blow-up point $\{0\}$, then the local masses $(σ_1,σ_2, σ_3) \not = 0$ satisfy \begin{align*} \begin{array}{rcl} σ_1&=&m_1(m_1+3)+m_2(m_2-1)\\ σ_2&=& m_1(m_1-1)+m_2(m_2+3)\\ σ_3 &=& m_1(m_1-1)+m_2(m_2-1) \end{array} \, \qquad \hbox { for some } \begin{array} {l} (m_1, m_2)\in {\mathbb Z} \hbox { with }\\ m_1, m_2= 0 \hbox{ or } 1 \hbox{ mod } 4,\\ m_1, m_2 = 2 \hbox { or } 3\hbox { mod } 4. \end{array} \end{align*} Here the local mass is defined by $ σ_i:=\frac 1{2π}\lim_{δ\to 0}\lim_{k\to\infty}\int_{B_δ(0)}e^{u_k^i}dx.$

Robust control design for multi-input multi-output plasma shape control on EAST tokamak using H_infinity synthesis

Accurate plasma shape control is the basis of tokamak plasma experiments and physical research. Modeling of the linearized control response of plasma shape and position has been widely used for shape controller design in the last several years. But it usually contains much of the uncertainty, such as structured uncertainties and unmodeled dynamics. EAST tokamak plasma shape controller design is also based on a linear rigid plasma response model which integrated within a Matlab-based toolset known as TokSys. Meanwhile the PID control approach is currently used for EAST plasma shape control. This leads to strong coupling between different parameters describing the plasma shape. To handle these problems, a H_infinity robust control scheme for EAST multi-input multi-output (MIMO) shape control has been proposed. First, the plasma response is modeled as the linearized rigid RZIp model. Then, the controller design technique is introduced with two main stages: 1) loop shaping is used to shape the nominal plant singular values to give desired open-loop properties at frequencies of high and low loop gain; 2) a normalized coprime factorization and H_infinity technique is used to decouple the most relevant control channels and minimize the tracking errors. Finally, the simulation results show that the H_infinity robust controller combines good robust stability margins, speed of response, dynamic tracking characteristics, and closed-loop decoupling for EAST plasma shape control.

Inverse Designed THz Spectral Splitters

This letter reports proof-of-principle demonstration of 3D printable, low-cost, and compact THz spectral splitters based on diffractive optical elements (DOEs) designed to disperse the incident collimated broadband THz radiation (0.5 THz - 0.7 THz) at a pre-specified distance. Via inverse design, we show that it is possible to design such a diffractive optic, which can split the broadband incident spectrum in any desired fashion, as is evidenced from both FDTD simulations and measured intensity profiles using a 500-750 GHz VNA. Due to its straightforward construction without the usage of any movable parts, our approach, in principle, can have various applications such as in portable, low-cost spectroscopy as well as in wireless THz communication systems as a THz demultiplexer.
