Mean value theorems on manifolds

We derive several mean value formulae on manifolds, generalizing the classical one for harmonic functions on Euclidean spaces as well as later results of Schoen-Yau, Michael-Simon, etc, on curved Riemannian manifolds. For the heat equation a mean value theorem with respect to `heat spheres' is proved for heat equation with respect to evolving Riemannian metrics via a space-time consideration. Some new monotonicity formulae are derived. As applications of the new local monotonicity formulae, some local regularity theorems concerning Ricci flow are proved.

Local monotonicity and mean value formulas for evolving Riemannian manifolds

We derive identities for general flows of Riemannian metrics that may be regarded as local mean-value, monotonicity, or Lyapunov formulae. These generalize previous work of the first author for mean curvature flow and other nonlinear diffusions. Our results apply in particular to Ricci flow, where they yield a local monotone quantity directly analogous to Perelman's reduced volume V and a local identity related to Perelman's average energy F.

Complete manifolds with nonnegative curvature operator

In this short note, as a simple application of the strong result proved recently by Böhm and Wilking, we give a classification on closed manifolds with 2-nonnegative curvature operator. Moreover, by the new invariant cone constructions of Böhm and Wilking, we show that any complete Riemannian manifold (with dimension $\ge 3$) whose curvature operator is bounded and satisfies the pinching condition $R\ge δR_{I}>0$, for some $δ>0$, must be compact. This provides an intrinsic analogue of a result of Hamilton on convex hypersurfaces.

A note on Perelman's LYH inequality

We give a proof to the Li-Yau-Hamilton type inequality claimed by Perelman on the fundamental solution to the conjugate heat equation. The rest of the paper is devoted to improving the known differential inequalities of Li-Yau-Hamilton type via monotonicity formulae.

A new Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate for Kahler-Ricci flow

In this paper we prove a new matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate for Kähler-Ricci flow. The form of this new Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate is obtained by the interpolation consideration originated in \cite{Ch1}. This new inequality is shown to be connected with Perelman's entropy formula through a family of differential equalities. In the rest of the paper, We show several applications of this new estimate and its linear version proved earlier in \cite{CN}. These include a sharp heat kernel comparison theorem, generalizing the earlier result of Li and Tian, a manifold version of Stoll's theorem on the characterization of `algebraic divisors', and a localized monotonicity formula for analytic subvarieties. Motivated by the connection between the heat kernel estimate and the reduced volume monotonicity of Perelman, we prove a sharp lower bound heat kernel estimate for the time-dependent heat equation, which is, in a certain sense, dual to Perelman's monotonicity of the `reduced volume'. As an application of this new monotonicity formula, we show that the blow-down limit of a certain type III immortal solution is a gradient expanding soliton. In the last section we also illustrate the connection between the new Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate and the earlier Hessian comparison theorem on the `reduced distance', proved in \cite{FIN}.

Ancient solution to Kahler-Ricci flow

In this paper, we prove that any non-flat ancient solution to Kähler-Ricci flow with bounded nonnegative bisectional curvature has asymptotic volume ratio zero. We also prove that any gradient shrinking solitons with positive bisectional curvature must be compact. Both results generalize the corresponding earlier results of Perelman in \cite{P1} and \cite{P2}. The results can be applied to study the geometry and function theory of complete Kähler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature via Kähler-Ricci flow. It also implies a compactness theorem on ancient solutions to Kähler-Ricci flow.

Entropy and reduced distance for Ricci expanders

Perelman has discovered two integral quantities, the shrinker entropy $\cW$ and the (backward) reduced volume, that are monotone under the Ricci flow $\pa g_{ij}/\pa t=-2R_{ij}$ and constant on shrinking solitons. Tweaking some signs, we find similar formulae corresponding to the expanding case. The {\it expanding entropy} $\ctW$ is monotone on any compact Ricci flow and constant precisely on expanders; as in Perelman, it follows from a differential inequality for a Harnack-like quantity for the conjugate heat equation, and leads to functionals $μ_+$ and $ν_+$. The {\it forward reduced volume} $θ_+$ is monotone in general and constant exactly on expanders. A natural conjecture asserts that $g(t)/t$ converges as $t\to\infty$ to a negative Einstein manifold in some weak sense (in particular ignoring collapsing parts). If the limit is known a-priori to be smooth and compact, this statement follows easily from any monotone quantity that is constant on expanders; these include $\Vol(g)/t^{n/2}$ (Hamilton) and $\barλ$ (Perelman), as well as our new quantities. In general, we show that if $\Vol(g)$ grows like $t^{n/2}$ (maximal volume growth) then $\ctW$, $θ_+$ and $\barλ$ remain bounded (in their appropriate ways) for all time. We attempt a sharp formulation of the conjecture.

The entropy formula for linear heat equation

We derive the entropy formula for the linear heat equaiton on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. As applications, we study the relation between the value of entropy and the volume of balls of various scales. The results are simpler version, without Ricci flow, of Perelman's recent results on volume non-collapsing.

Ricci flow and nonnegativity of curvature

In this paper, we prove a general maximum principle for the time dependent Lichnerowicz heat equation on symmetric tensors coupled with the Ricci flow on complete Riemannian manifolds. As an application we construct complete manifolds with bounded nonnegative sectional curvature of dimension greater than or equal to four such that the Ricci flow does not preserve the nonnegativity of the sectional curvature, even though the nonnegativity of the sectional curvature was proved to be preserved by Hamilton in dimension three. The example is the first of this type. This fact is proved through a general splitting theorem on the complete family of metrics with nonnegative sectional curvature, deformed by the Ricci flow.

Plurisubharmonic functions and the structure of complete Kähler manifolds with nonnegative curvature

In this paper, we study global properties of continuous plurisubharmonic functions on complete noncompact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature and their applications to the structure of such manifolds. We prove that continuous plurisubharmonic functions with reasonable growth rate on such manifolds can be approximated by smooth plurisubharmonic functions through the heat flow deformation. Optimal Liouville type theorem for the plurisubharmonic functions as well as a splitting theorem in terms of harmonic functions and holomorphic functions are established. The results are then applied to prove several structure theorems on complete noncompact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional or sectional curvature.

Liouville properties of plurisubharmonic functions

We prove a Liouville theorem for the plurisubharmonic functions on complete Kaelher manifolds. As the applications, we prove a splitting theorem for complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative biscetional curvature in terms of the linear growth harmonic functions and a optomal gap theorem for such manifolds.

Plurisubharmonic functions and the Kaehler-Ricci flow

We prove a linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Kaehler-Ricci flow. We then use this sharp differential inequality to study the Liouville properties of the plurisubharmonic functions on complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature.

Kaehler-Ricci flow and the Poincare-Lelong equation

We show that the solution constructed in an earlier work of Y-G. Shi and the authors can be used to obtain sharp gradient estimates for the Kaehler-Ricci flow which achieves equality on a steady soliton. The estimate can be applied to obtain a long time existence of the Kaehler-Ricci flow. In the second part of the paper we develope a so-called "moment" type estimate for the Kaehler-Ricci flow, through which we prove that the flow preserves several properties. In the last part we study the convergence of the Kaehler-Ricci flow.

Monotonicity and Kaehler-Ricci flow

We show a connection between the linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Kaehler-Ricci flow and the monotonicity formula for the positive currents. As an application of the linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton stated in this paper and the one proved by Chow-Hamiltonm, we give another proof on the classification of the limit solutions of the Kaehler-Ricci (Ricci) flow.
