A near-field radiative heat transfer device

Recently, many works have experimentally demonstrated near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) exceeding the far-field blackbody limit between planar surfaces. Due to the difficulties associated with maintaining the nanosize gaps required for measuring a near-field enhancement, these demonstrations have been limited to experiments that cannot be implemented into actual applications. This poses a significant bottleneck to the advancement of NFRHT research. Here, we describe devices bridging laboratory-scale measurements and potential NFRHT engineering applications in energy conversion and thermal management. We report a maximum NFRHT enhancement of ~ 28.5 over the blackbody limit with devices made of millimeter-sized doped silicon (Si) surfaces separated by vacuum gap spacings down to ~ 110 nm. The devices capitalize on micropillars, separating the high-temperature emitter and low-temperature receiver, manufactured within micrometer-deep pits. These micropillars, which are ~ 4.5 to 45 times longer than the nanosize vacuum spacing where radiation transfer takes place, minimize parasitic heat conduction without sacrificing device structural integrity. The robustness of our devices enables gap spacing visualization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) prior to performing NFRHT measurements. Direct gap spacing characterization is critical for transitioning NFRHT research from laboratory-scale experiments to applications.

Quantum Tomography of the Photon-Plasmon Conversion Process in a Metal Hole Array

In the past decades, quantum plasmonics has become an active area due to its potential applications in on-chip plasmonic devices for quantum information processing. However, the fundamental physical process, i.e., how a quantum state of light evolves in the photon-plasmon conversion process, has not been clearly understood. Here, we report a complete characterization of the plasmon-assisted extraordinary optical transmission process through quantum process tomography. By inputting various coherent states to interact with the plasmonic structure and detecting the output states with a homodyne detector, we reconstruct the process tensor of the photon-plasmon conversion process. Both the amplitude and phase information of the process are extracted, which explains the evolution of the quantum-optical state after the coupling with plasmons. Our experimental demonstration constitutes a fundamental block for future on-chip applications of quantum plasmonic circuits.

ProductNet: a Collection of High-Quality Datasets for Product Representation Learning

ProductNet is a collection of high-quality product datasets for better product understanding. Motivated by ImageNet, ProductNet aims at supporting product representation learning by curating product datasets of high quality with properly chosen taxonomy. In this paper, the two goals of building high-quality product datasets and learning product representation support each other in an iterative fashion: the product embedding is obtained via a multi-modal deep neural network (master model) designed to leverage product image and catalog information; and in return, the embedding is utilized via active learning (local model) to vastly accelerate the annotation process. For the labeled data, the proposed master model yields high categorization accuracy (94.7% top-1 accuracy for 1240 classes), which can be used as search indices, partition keys, and input features for machine learning models. The product embedding, as well as the fined-tuned master model for a specific business task, can also be used for various transfer learning tasks.

Reference Product Search

For a product of interest, we propose a search method to surface a set of reference products. The reference products can be used as candidates to support downstream modeling tasks and business applications. The search method consists of product representation learning and fingerprint-type vector searching. The product catalog information is transformed into a high-quality embedding of low dimensions via a novel attention auto-encoder neural network, and the embedding is further coupled with a binary encoding vector for fast retrieval. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the proposed method, and compare it with peer services to demonstrate its advantage in terms of search return rate and precision.

On-Chip Chiral Single-Photon Interface: Isolation and Unidirectional Emission

Chiral quantum systems have received intensive attention in fundamental physics and applications in quantum information processing including optical isolation and photon unidirectional emission. Here, we design an on-chip emitter-resonator system with strong chiral light-matter interaction for a chiral single-photon interface. The system includes a microring resonator with a strong evanescent field and a near-unity optical chirality along both of the whole outside and inside walls, allowing a strong and chiral coupling of the Whispering-Gallery mode to a quantum emitter. By initializing a quantum dot in a specific spin ground state or shifting the transition energy with a polarization-selective optical Stark effect, we show a broadband optical isolation at the single-photon level over several GHz. Furthermore, a quantum emitter chirally coupling to the microring resonator can emit single photons unidirectionally. Our protocol paves a way to realize multifunctional chiral single-photon interface in on-chip quantum information processing and quantum networks.

Photonic thermal diode enabled by surface polariton coupling in nanostructures

A novel photonic thermal diode concept operating in the near field and capitalizing on the temperature-dependence of coupled surface polariton modes in nanostructures is proposed. The diode concept utilizes terminals made of the same material supporting surface polariton modes in the infrared, but with dissimilar structures. The specific diode design analyzed in this Letter involves a thin film and a bulk, both made of 3C silicon carbide, separated by a subwavelength vacuum gap. High rectification efficiency is obtained by tuning the antisymmetric resonant modes of the thin film, resulting from surface phonon-polariton coupling, on- and off-resonance with the resonant mode of the bulk as a function of the temperature bias direction. Rectification efficiency is investigated by varying structural parameters, namely the vacuum gap size, the dielectric function of the substrate onto which the film is coated, and the film thickness to gap size ratio. Calculations based on fluctuational electrodynamics reveal that high rectification efficiencies in the 80% to 87% range can be maintained in a wide temperature band (~ 700 K to 1000 K). The rectification efficiency of the proposed diode concept can be potentially further enhanced by investigating more complex nanostructures such as gratings and multilayered media.

Room-temperature chiral charge pumping in Dirac semimetals

Chiral anomaly, a non-conservation of chiral charge pumped by the topological nontrivial gauge fields, has been predicted to exist in Weyl semimetals. However, until now, the experimental signature of this effect exclusively relies on the observation of negative longitudinal magnetoresistance at low temperatures. Here, we report the field-modulated chiral charge pumping process and valley diffusion in Cd3As2. Apart from the conventional negative magnetoresistance, we observe an unusual nonlocal response with negative field dependence up to room temperature, originating from the diffusion of valley polarization. Furthermore, a large magneto-optic Kerr effect generated by parallel electric and magnetic fields is detected. These new experimental approaches provide a quantitative analysis of the chiral anomaly phenomenon which is inaccessible previously. The ability to manipulate the valley polarization in topological semimetal at room temperature opens up a brand-new route towards understanding its fundamental properties and utilizing the chiral fermions.

Wafer-scale arrayed p-n junctions based on few-layer epitaxial GaTe

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted substantial attention in electronic and optoelectronic applications with superior advantages of being flexible, transparent and highly tunable. Gapless graphene exhibits ultra-broadband and fast photoresponse while the 2D semiconducting MoS2 and GaTe unveil high sensitivity and tunable responsivity to visible light. However, the device yield and the repeatability call for a further improvement of the 2D materials to render large-scale uniformity. Here we report a layer-by-layer growth of wafer-scale GaTe with a hole mobility of 28.4 cm2/Vs by molecular beam epitaxy. The arrayed p-n junctions were developed by growing few-layer GaTe directly on three-inch Si wafers. The resultant diodes reveal good rectifying characteristics, photoresponse with a maximum photoresponsivity of 2.74 A/W and a high photovoltaic external quantum efficiency up to 62%. The photocurrent reaches saturation fast enough to capture a time constant of 22 μs and shows no sign of device degradation after 1.37 million cycles of operation. Most strikingly, such high performance has been achieved across the entire wafer, making the volume production of devices accessible. Finally, several photo-images were acquired by the GaTe/Si photodiodes with a reasonable contrast and spatial resolution, demonstrating for the first time the potential of integrating the 2D materials with the silicon technology for novel optoelectronic devices.

Arrayed van der Waals Vertical Heterostructures based on 2D GaSe Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Vertically stacking two dimensional (2D) materials can enable the design of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices and realize complex functionality. However, the fabrication of such artificial heterostructures in wafer scale with an atomically-sharp interface poses an unprecedented challenge. Here, we demonstrate a convenient and controllable approach for the production of wafer-scale 2D GaSe thin films by molecular beam epitaxy. In-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction oscillations and Raman spectroscopy reveal a layer-by-layer van der Waals epitaxial growth mode. Highly-efficient photodetector arrays were fabricated based on few-layer GaSe on Si. These photodiodes show steady rectifying characteristics and a relatively high external quantum efficiency of 23.6%. The resultant photoresponse is super-fast and robust with a response time of 60 us. Importantly, the device shows no sign of degradation after 1 million cycles of operation. Our study establishes a new approach to produce controllable, robust and large-area 2D heterostructures and presents a crucial step for further practical applications.

Thresholding for Top-k Recommendation with Temporal Dynamics

This work focuses on top-k recommendation in domains where underlying data distribution shifts overtime. We propose to learn a time-dependent bias for each item over whatever existing recommendation engine. Such a bias learning process alleviates data sparsity in constructing the engine, and at the same time captures recent trend shift observed in data. We present an alternating optimization framework to resolve the bias learning problem, and develop methods to handle a variety of commonly used recommendation evaluation criteria, as well as large number of items and users in practice. The proposed algorithm is examined, both offline and online, using real world data sets collected from the largest retailer worldwide. Empirical results demonstrate that the bias learning can almost always boost recommendation performance. We encourage other practitioners to adopt it as a standard component in recommender systems where temporal dynamics is a norm.

Spin-valve Effect in NiFe/MoS2/NiFe Junctions

Two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been recently proposed as appealing candidate materials for spintronic applications owing to their distinctive atomic crystal structure and exotic physical properties arising from the large bonding anisotropy. Here we introduce the first MoS2-based spin-valves that employ monolayer MoS2 as the nonmagnetic spacer. In contrast with what expected from the semiconducting band-structure of MoS2, the vertically sandwiched-MoS2 layers exhibit metallic behavior. This originates from their strong hybridization with the Ni and Fe atoms of the Permalloy (Py) electrode. The spin-valve effect is observed up to 240 K, with the highest magnetoresistance (MR) up to 0.73% at low temperatures. The experimental work is accompanied by the first principle electron transport calculations, which reveal an MR of ~ 9% for an ideal Py/MoS2/Py junction. Our results clearly identify TMDs as a promising spacer compound in magnetic tunnel junctions and may open a new avenue for the TMDs-based spintronic applications.

Controllable Schottky Barriers between MoS2 and Permalloy

MoS2 is a layered two-dimensional material with strong spin-orbit coupling and long spin lifetime, which is promising for electronic and spintronic applications. However, because of its large band gap and small electron affinity, a considerable Schottky barrier exists between MoS2 and contact metal, hindering the further study of spin transport and spin injection in MoS2. Although substantial progress has been made in improving device performance, the existence of metal-semiconductor Schottky barrier has not yet been fully understood. Here, we investigate permalloy (Py) contacts to both multilayer and monolayer MoS2. Ohmic contact is developed between multilayer MoS2 and Py electrodes with a negative Schottky barrier, which yields a high field-effect mobility exceeding 55 cm2V-1s-1 at low temperature. Further, by applying back gate voltage and inserting different thickness of Al2O3 layer between the metal and monolayer MoS2, we have achieved a good tunability of the Schottky barrier height (down to zero). These results are important in improving the performance of MoS2 transistor devices; and it may pave the way to realize spin transport and spin injection in MoS2.

ReS2-based field-effect transistors and photodetectors

Atomically-thin two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been extensively studied in recent years because of their appealing electrical and optical properties. Here, we report on the fabrication of ReS2 field-effect transistors via the encapsulation of ReS2 nanosheets in a high-\k{appa} Al2O3 dielectric environment. Low-temperature transport measurements allowed us to observe a direct metal-to-insulator transition originating from strong electron-electron interactions. Remarkably, the photodetectors based on ReS2 exhibit gate-tunable photoresponsivity up to 16.14 A/W and external quantum efficiency reaching 3,168 %, showing a competitive device performance to those reported in graphene, MoSe2, GaS and GaSe-based photodetectors. Our study unambiguously distinguishes ReS2 as a new candidate for future applications in electronics and optoelectronics.

What is Tumblr: A Statistical Overview and Comparison

Tumblr, as one of the most popular microblogging platforms, has gained momentum recently. It is reported to have 166.4 millions of users and 73.4 billions of posts by January 2014. While many articles about Tumblr have been published in major press, there is not much scholar work so far. In this paper, we provide some pioneer analysis on Tumblr from a variety of aspects. We study the social network structure among Tumblr users, analyze its user generated content, and describe reblogging patterns to analyze its user behavior. We aim to provide a comprehensive statistical overview of Tumblr and compare it with other popular social services, including blogosphere, Twitter and Facebook, in answering a couple of key questions: What is Tumblr? How is Tumblr different from other social media networks? In short, we find Tumblr has more rich content than other microblogging platforms, and it contains hybrid characteristics of social networking, traditional blogosphere, and social media. This work serves as an early snapshot of Tumblr that later work can leverage.
