EIC Physics from An All-Silicon Tracking Detector

The proposed electron-ion collider has a rich physics program to study the internal structure of protons and heavy nuclei. This program will impose strict requirements on detector design. This paper explores how these requirements can be satisfied using an all-silicon tracking detector, by consideration of three representative probes: heavy flavor hadrons, jets, and exclusive vector mesons.

A comprehensive statistical study on gamma-ray bursts

In order to obtain an overview of the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we need a full sample. In this paper, we collected 6289 GRBs (from GRB 910421 to GRB 160509A) from the literature, including prompt emission, afterglow and host galaxy properties. We hope to use this large sample to reveal the intrinsic properties of GRB. We have listed all the data in machine readable tables, including the properties of the GRBs, correlation coefficients and linear regression results of two arbitrary parameters, and linear regression results of any three parameters. These machine readable tables could be used as a data reservoir for further studies on the classifications or correlations. One may find some intrinsic properties from these statistical results. With this comprehensive table, it is possible to find relations between different parameters, and to classify the GRBs into different kinds of sub-groups. With the completion, it may reveal the nature of GRBs and may be used as tools like pseudo-redshift indicators, standard candles, etc. All the machine readable data and statistical results are available on the website of the journal.

Characteristics of fast timing MCP-PMTs in magnetic fields

The motivation of this paper is to explore the parameters that affect the performance of Microchannel Plate Photomultiplier Tubes (MCP-PMTs) in magnetic fields with the goal to guide their design to achieve a high magnetic field tolerance. MCP-PMTs based on two different designs were tested. The magnetic field tolerance of MCP-PMT based on a design providing independently biased voltages showed a significant improvement (up to 0.7 T) compared to the one utilizing an internal resistor chain design (up to 0.1 T), indicating the importance of individually adjustable voltages. The effects of the rotation angle of the MCP-PMT relative to the magnetic field direction and of the bias voltage between the photocathode and the top MCP were extensively investigated using the MCP-PMT based on the independently biased voltage design. It was found that the signal amplitude of the MCP-PMT exhibits an enhanced performance at a tilt angle of $\pm$8$^{\circ}$, due to the 8$^{\circ}$ bias angle of the MCP pores. The maximum signal amplitude was observed at different bias voltages depending on the magnetic field strength.

Transaction Fraud Detection Using GRU-centered Sandwich-structured Model

Rapid growth of modern technologies such as internet and mobile computing are bringing dramatically increased e-commerce payments, as well as the explosion in transaction fraud. Meanwhile, fraudsters are continually refining their tricks, making rule-based fraud detection systems difficult to handle the ever-changing fraud patterns. Many data mining and artificial intelligence methods have been proposed for identifying small anomalies in large transaction data sets, increasing detecting efficiency to some extent. Nevertheless, there is always a contradiction that most methods are irrelevant to transaction sequence, yet sequence-related methods usually cannot learn information at single-transaction level well. In this paper, a new "within->between->within" sandwich-structured sequence learning architecture has been proposed by stacking an ensemble method, a deep sequential learning method and another top-layer ensemble classifier in proper order. Moreover, attention mechanism has also been introduced in to further improve performance. Models in this structure have been manifested to be very efficient in scenarios like fraud detection, where the information sequence is made up of vectors with complex interconnected features.

Rate capability and magnetic field tolerance measurements of fast timing microchannel plate photodetectors

Microchannel plate photodetectors provide both picosecond time resolution and sub-millimeter position resolution, making them attractive photosensors for particle identification detectors of a future U.S. Electron Ion Collider. We have tested the rate capability and magnetic field tolerance of 6$\times$6 cm$^{2}$ microchannel plate photodetectors fabricated at Argonne National Laboratory. The microchannel plate photodetector is designed as a low-cost all-glass vacuum package with a chevron pair stack of next-generation microchannel plates functionalized by atomic layer deposition. The rate capability test was performed using Fermilab's 120 GeV primary proton beam, and the magnetic field tolerance test was performed using a solenoid magnetic with tunable magnetic field strength up to 4 Tesla. The measured gain of the microchannel plate photodetector is stable up to 75 kHz/cm$^{2}$, and varies depending on the applied magnetic field strength and the rotation angle relative to the magnetic field direction.

To Walk or Not to Walk: Crowdsourced Assessment of External Vehicle-to-Pedestrian Displays

Researchers, technology reviewers, and governmental agencies have expressed concern that automation may necessitate the introduction of added displays to indicate vehicle intent in vehicle-to-pedestrian interactions. An automated online methodology for obtaining communication intent perceptions for 30 external vehicle-to-pedestrian display concepts was implemented and tested using Amazon Mechanic Turk. Data from 200 qualified participants was quickly obtained and processed. In addition to producing a useful early-stage evaluation of these specific design concepts, the test demonstrated that the methodology is scalable so that a large number of design elements or minor variations can be assessed through a series of runs even on much larger samples in a matter of hours. Using this approach, designers should be able to refine concepts both more quickly and in more depth than available development resources typically allow. Some concerns and questions about common assumptions related to the implementation of vehicle-to-pedestrian displays are posed.

Tuning and validation of hadronic event generator for $R$ value measurements in the tau-charm region

To measure the $R$ value in an energy scan experiment with $\ee$ collisions, precise calculation of initial state radiation is required in event generators. We present an event generator for this consideration, which incorporates initial state radiation effects up to the second order accuracy, and the radiative correction factor is calculated using the totally hadronic Born cross section. The measured exclusive processes are generated according to their cross sections, while the unknown processes are generated using the LUND Area Law model, and its parameters are tuned with data collected at $\sqrt s=3.65$ GeV. The optimized values are validated with data in the range $\sqrt s=2.2324\sim3.671$ GeV. These optimized parameters are universally valid for event generation below the $D\bar D$ threshold.

Development and testing of cost-effective, 6 cm x 6 cm MCP-based photodetectors for fast timing applications

Micro-channel plate (MCP)-based photodetectors are capable of picosecond level time resolution and sub-mm level position resolution, which makes them a perfect candidate for the next generation large area photodetectors. The large-area picosecond photodetector (LAPPD) collaboration is developing new techniques for making large-area photodetectors based on new MCP fabrication and functionalization methods. A small single tube processing system (SmSTPS) was constructed at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) for developing scalable, cost-effective, glass-body, 6 cm x 6 cm, picosecond photodetectors based on MCPs functionalized by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). Recently, a number of fully processed and hermitically sealed prototypes made of MCPs with 20 micron pores have been fabricated. This is a significant milestone for the LAPPD project. These prototypes were characterized with a pulsed laser test facility. Without optimization, the prototypes have shown excellent results: The time resolution is ~57 ps for single photoelectron mode and ~15 ps for multi-photoelectron mode; the best position resolution is < 0.8 mm for large pulses. In this paper, the tube processing system, the detector assembly, experimental setup, data analysis and the key performance will be presented.

MCP-based Photodetectors for Cryogenic Applications

The Argonne MCP-based photo detector is an offshoot of the Large Area Pico-second Photo Detector (LAPPD) project, wherein 6 cm x 6 cm sized detectors are made at Argonne National Laboratory. We have successfully built and tested our first detectors for pico-second timing and few mm spatial resolution. We discuss our efforts to customize these detectors to operate in a cryogenic environment. Initial plans aim to operate in liquid argon. We are also exploring ways to mitigate wave length shifting requirements and also developing bare-MCP photodetectors to operate in a gaseous cryogenic environment.

Development of Imaging Calorimetry

This paper will argue for continued effort in developing imaging calorimeters for future colliders and/or upgrades to existing detectors. Imaging calorimeters offer a plethora of advantages beyond their application in conjunction with Particle Flow Algorithms. Further R&D is needed to turn the first generation prototypes into viable detectors for colliding beam experiments.

Imaging the indirect dissociation dynamics of temporary negative ion: N2O- -> N2 + O-

We reported an imaging study of the dissociation dynamics of temporary negative ion N2O- formed in the low-energy electron attachment, e- + N2O -> N2O- -> N2 + O-. With the help of ab initio molecular dynamics calculations, the evolution of momentum distributions of the O- fragment in terms of the electron attachment energy is identified as the result of a competition between two distinctly different indirect pathways, namely, climbing over and bypassing the energy ridge after the molecular structure bending. These two pathways prefer leaving the N2 fragment at the high vibrational and rotational states, respectively.

Renner-Teller Effect on Dissociative Electron Attachments to Carbon Dioxide

Stereo-dynamics of dissociative electron attachments to CO_2 is investigated by the O^- anion velocity imaging experiments combined with the R-matrix calculations. ^2Π_g as a Feshbach resonant state of CO_2^- is confirmed to play roles in the dissociations around 8.0 eV. We find that the dynamic evolutions of the Renner-Teller effect lead to the dramatically different anisotropic O^- momentum distributions.

Tests of a Digital Hadron Calorimeter

In the context of developing a hadron calorimeter with extremely fine granularity for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms to the measurement of jet energies at a future lepton collider, we report on extensive tests of a small scale prototype calorimeter. The calorimeter contained up to 10 layers of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with 2560 1 \times 1 cm2 readout pads, interleaved with steel absorber plates. The tests included both long-term Cosmic Ray data taking and measurements in particle beams, where the response to broadband muons and to pions and positrons with energies in the range of 1 - 16 GeV was established. Detailed measurements of the chambers efficiency as function of beam intensity have also been performed using 120 GeV protons at varying intensity. The data are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and to analytical calculations of the rate limitations.

Environmental Dependence of the Performance of Resistive Plate Chambers

This paper reports on the performance of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) as function of the gas flow rate through the chambers and of environmental conditions, such as atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature and air humidity. The chambers are read out by pads with an area of 1 x 1 cm2 and a 1-bit resolution per pad. The performance measures include the noise rate as well as the detection efficiency and pad multiplicity for cosmic rays. The measurements extended over a period of almost one year and are sensitive to possible long-term aging effects.

Hadron Showers in a Digital Hadron Calorimeter

A small prototype of a finely granulated digital hadron calorimeter with Resistive Plate Chambers as active elements was exposed to positive pions of 1 >. 16 GeV energy from the Fermilab test beam. The event selection separates events with mostly non-interacting particles and events with hadronic showers which initiated in the front part of the calorimeter. The data are compared to a Monte Carlo simulation of the set-up. The paper concludes with predictions for the performance of an extended digital hadron calorimeter.
