QoE-Aware Resource Allocation for Semantic Communication Networks

With the aim of accomplishing intelligence tasks, semantic communications transmit task-related information only, yielding significant performance gains over conventional communications. To guarantee user requirements for different types of tasks, we perform the semantic-aware resource allocation in a multi-cell multi-task network in this paper. Specifically, an approximate measure of semantic entropy is first developed to quantify the semantic information for different tasks, based on which a novel quality-of-experience (QoE) model is proposed. We formulate the QoE-aware semantic resource allocation in terms of the number of transmitted semantic symbols, channel assignment, and power allocation. To solve this problem, we first decouple it into two independent subproblems. The first one is to optimize the number of transmitted semantic symbols with given channel assignment and power allocation, which is solved by the exhaustive searching method. The second one is the channel assignment and power allocation subproblem, which is modeled as a many-to-one matching game and solved by the proposed low-complexity matching algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method on the overall QoE.

DRLinFluids -- An open-source python platform of coupling Deep Reinforcement Learning and OpenFOAM

We propose an open-source python platform for applications of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) in fluid mechanics. DRL has been widely used in optimizing decision-making in nonlinear and high-dimensional problems. Here, an agent maximizes a cumulative reward with learning a feedback policy by acting in an environment. In control theory terms, the cumulative reward would correspond to the cost function, the agent to the actuator, the environment to the measured signals and the learned policy to the feedback law. Thus, DRL assumes an interactive environment or, equivalently, control plant. The setup of a numerical simulation plant with DRL is challenging and time-consuming. In this work, a novel python platform, named DRLinFluids is developed for this purpose, with DRL for flow control and optimization problems in fluid mechanics. The simulations employ OpenFOAM as popular, flexible Navier-Stokes solver in industry and academia, and Tensorforce or Tianshou as widely used versatile DRL packages. The reliability and efficiency of DRLinFluids are demonstrated for two wake stabilization benchmark problems. DRLinFluids significantly reduces the application effort of DRL in fluid mechanics and is expected to greatly accelerates academic and industrial applications.

Improving the estimation of directional area scattering factor (DASF) from canopy reflectance: theoretical basis and validation

Directional area scattering factor (DASF) is a critical canopy structural parameter for vegetation monitoring. It provides an efficient tool for decoupling of canopy structure and leaf optics from canopy reflectance. Current standard approach to estimate DASF from canopy bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) is based on the assumption that in the weakly absorbing 710 to 790 nm spectral interval, leaf scattering does not change much with the concentration of dry matter and thus its variation can be neglected. This results in biased estimates of DASF and consequently leads to uncertainty in DASF-related applications. This study proposes a new approach to account for variations in concentrations of this biochemical constituent, which additionally uses the canopy BRF at 2260 nm. In silico analysis of the proposed approach suggests significant increase in accuracy over the standard technique by a relative root mean square error (rRMSE) of 49% and 34% for one- and three dimensional scenes, respectively. When compared with indoor multi-angular hyperspectral measurements reported in literature, the mean absolute error has reduced by 68% for needle leaf and 20% for broadleaf canopies. Thus, the proposed DASF estimation approach outperforms the current one and can be used more reliably in DASF-related applications, such as vegetation monitoring of functional traits, dynamics, and radiation budget.

Resource allocation for text semantic communications

Semantic communications have shown its great potential to improve the transmission reliability, especially in the low signal-to-noise regime. However, resource allocation for semantic communications still remains unexplored, which is a critical issue in guaranteeing the semantic transmission reliability and the communication efficiency. To fill this gap, we investigate the spectral efficiency in the semantic domain and rethink the semantic-aware resource allocation issue. Specifically, taking text semantic communication as an example, the semantic spectral efficiency (S-SE) is defined for the first time, and is used to optimize resource allocation in terms of channel assignment and the number of transmitted semantic symbols. Additionally, for fair comparison of semantic and conventional communication systems, a transform method is developed to convert the conventional bit-based spectral efficiency to the S-SE. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed resource allocation method, as well as the superiority of semantic communications in terms of the S-SE.

Event-driven Two-stage Solution to Non-intrusive Load Monitoring

Existing methods of non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) in literatures generally suffer from high computational complexity and/or low accuracy in identifying working household appliances. This paper proposes an event-driven Factorial Hidden Markov model (eFHMM) for multiple appliances with multiple states in a household, aiming for low computational complexity and high load disaggregation accuracy. The proposed eFHMM decreases the computational complexity to be linear to the event number, which ensures online load disaggregation. Furthermore, the eFHMM is solved in two stages, where the first stage identifies state-changing appliance using transient signatures and the second stage confirms the inferred states using steady-state signatures. The combination of transient and steady-state signatures, which are extracted from transient and steady periods segmented by detected events, enhances the uniqueness of each state transition and associated appliances, which ensures accurate load disaggregation. The event-driven two-stage NILM solution, termed as eFHMM-TS, is naturally fit into an edge-cloud framework, which makes possible the real-world application of NILM. The proposed eFHMM-TS method is validated on the LIFTED and synD datasets. Results demonstrate that the eFHMM-TS method outperforms other methods and can be applied in practice.

Adaptive Event Detection for Representative Load Signature Extraction

Event detection is the first step in event-based non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) and it can provide useful transient information to identify appliances. However, existing event detection methods with fixed parameters may fail in case of unpredictable and complicated residential load changes such as high fluctuation, long transition, and near simultaneity. This paper proposes a dynamic time-window approach to deal with these highly complex load variations. Specifically, a window with adaptive margins, multi-timescale window screening, and adaptive threshold (WAMMA) method is proposed to detect events in aggregated home appliance load data with high sampling rate (>1Hz). The proposed method accurately captures the transient process by adaptively tuning parameters including window width, margin width, and change threshold. Furthermore, representative transient and steady-state load signatures are extracted and, for the first time, quantified from transient and steady periods segmented by detected events. Case studies on a 20Hz dataset, the 50Hz LIFTED dataset, and the 60Hz BLUED dataset show that the proposed method can robustly outperform other state-of-art event detection methods. This paper also shows that the extracted load signatures can improve NILM accuracy and help develop other applications such as load reconstruction to generate realistic load data for NILM research.

Decentralized Ability-Aware Adaptive Control for Multi-robot Collaborative Manipulation

Multi-robot teams can achieve more dexterous, complex and heavier payload tasks than a single robot, yet effective collaboration is required. Multi-robot collaboration is extremely challenging due to the different kinematic and dynamics capabilities of the robots, the limited communication between them, and the uncertainty of the system parameters. In this paper, a Decentralized Ability-Aware Adaptive Control is proposed to address these challenges based on two key features. Firstly, the common manipulation task is represented by the proposed nominal task ellipsoid, which is used to maximize each robot force capability online via optimizing its configuration. Secondly, a decentralized adaptive controller is designed to be Lyapunov stable in spite of heterogeneous actuation constraints of the robots and uncertain physical parameters of the object and environment. In the proposed framework, decentralized coordination and load distribution between the robots is achieved without communication, while only the control deficiency is broadcast if any of the robots reaches its force limits. In this case, the object reference trajectory is modified in a decentralized manner to guarantee stable interaction. Finally, we perform several numerical and physical simulations to analyse and verify the proposed method with heterogeneous multi-robot teams in collaborative manipulation tasks.

Certifiably Optimal Sparse Sufficient Dimension Reduction

Sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) is a popular tool in regression analysis, which replaces the original predictors with a minimal set of their linear combinations. However, the estimated linear combinations generally contain all original predictors, which brings difficulties in interpreting the results, especially when the number of predictors is large. In this paper, we propose a customized branch and bound algorithm, optimal sparse generalized eigenvalue problem (Optimal SGEP), which combines a SGEP formulation of many SDR methods and efficient and accurate bounds allowing the algorithm to converge quickly. Optimal SGEP exactly solves the underlying non-convex optimization problem and thus produces certifiably optimal solutions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through simulation studies.

Multi-mode Trajectory Optimization for Impact-aware Manipulation

The transition from free motion to contact is a challenging problem in robotics, in part due to its hybrid nature. Additionally, disregarding the effects of impacts at the motion planning level often results in intractable impulsive contact forces. In this paper, we introduce an impact-aware multi-mode trajectory optimization (TO) method that combines hybrid dynamics and hybrid control in a coherent fashion. A key concept is the incorporation of an explicit contact force transmission model in the TO method. This allows the simultaneous optimization of the contact forces, contact timings, continuous motion trajectories and compliance, while satisfying task constraints. We compare our method against standard compliance control and an impact-agnostic TO method in physical simulations. Further, we experimentally validate the proposed method with a robot manipulator on the task of halting a large-momentum object.

LfEdNet: A Task-based Day-ahead Load Forecasting Model for Stochastic Economic Dispatch

Load forecasting is one of the most important and studied topics in modern power systems. Most of the existing researches on day-ahead load forecasting try to build a good model to improve the forecasting accuracy. The forecasted load is then used as the input to generation scheduling with the ultimate goal of minimizing the cost of generation schedules. However, existing day-ahead load forecasting models do not consider this ultimate goal at the training/forecasting stage. This paper proposes a task-based day-ahead load forecasting model labeled as LfEdNet that combines two individual layers in one model, including a load forecasting layer based on deep neural network (Lf layer) and a day-ahead stochastic economic dispatch (SED) layer (Ed layer). The training of LfEdNet aims to minimize the cost of the day-ahead SED in the Ed layer by updating the parameters of the Lf layer. Sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is used to solve the day-ahead SED in the Ed layer. The test results demonstrate that the forecasted results produced by LfEdNet can lead to lower cost of day-ahead SED while maintaining a relatively high forecasting accuracy.

Deep Shape from Polarization

This paper makes a first attempt to bring the Shape from Polarization (SfP) problem to the realm of deep learning. The previous state-of-the-art methods for SfP have been purely physics-based. We see value in these principled models, and blend these physical models as priors into a neural network architecture. This proposed approach achieves results that exceed the previous state-of-the-art on a challenging dataset we introduce. This dataset consists of polarization images taken over a range of object textures, paints, and lighting conditions. We report that our proposed method achieves the lowest test error on each tested condition in our dataset, showing the value of blending data-driven and physics-driven approaches.

A Multi-timescale Two-stage Robust Grid-friendly Dispatch Model for Microgrid Operation

Uncertainty in renewable energy generation and load consumption is a great challenge for microgrid operation, especially in islanded mode as the microgrid may be small in size and has limited flexible resources. In this paper, a multi-timescale, two-stage robust unit commitment and economic dispatch model is proposed to optimize the microgrid operation. The first stage is a combination of day-ahead hourly and real-time sub-hourly model, which means the day-ahead dispatch result must also satisfy the real-time condition at the same time. The second stage is to verify the feasibility of the day-ahead dispatch result in worst-case condition considering high-level uncertainty in renewable energy dispatch and load consumptions. In the proposed model, battery energy storage system (BESS) and solar PV units are integrated as a combined solar-storage system. The BESS plays an essential role to balance the variable output of solar PV units, which keeps the combined solar-storage system output unchanged on an hourly basis. In this way, it largely neutralizes the impact of solar uncertainty and makes the microgrid operation grid friendly. Furthermore, in order to enhance the flexibility and resilience of the microgrid, both BESS and thermal units provide regulating reserve to manage solar and load uncertainty. The model has been tested in a controlled hardware in loop (CHIL) environment for the Bronzeville Community Microgrid system in Chicago. The simulation results show that the proposed model works effectively in managing the uncertainty in solar PV and load and can provide a flexible dispatch in both grid-connected and islanded modes.

LIFTED: Household Appliance-level Load Dataset and Data Compression with Lossless Coding considering Precision

The issue of estimating the detailed appliance level load consumption has received considerable attention. This paper first presents a Labelled hIgh-Frequency daTaset for Electricity Disaggregation (LIFTED), which can be used for research on nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM). This dataset consists of one-week detailed appliance-level electricity usage information including voltage, current, active power, and reactive power for a single apartment in the United States, down-sampled at 50Hz. This paper also proposes an efficient Lossless Coding considering Precision (LCP) algorithm on data compression. This algorithm considers both the precision requirements of practical applications on load datasets and the unique characteristics of household appliance-level load datasets. The LCP algorithm is tested on the LIFTED dataset and the results demonstrate that LCP can achieve a higher compression ratio compared to several existing algorithms.

Unconventional Magnetization of Fe3O4 Thin Film Grown on Amorphous SiO2 Substrate

High quality single crystal Fe3O4 thin films with (111) orientation had been prepared on amorphous SiO2 substrate by pulsed laser deposition. The magnetization properties of the films are found to be highly unconventional. The Verwey transition temperature derived from the magnetization jump is around 140K, which is higher than the bulk value and it can be slightly suppressed by out-plane magnetic field; the out-of-plane magnetization, which is unexpectedly higher than the in-plane value, is also significantly increased as compared with the bulk value. Our findings suggest that the local Coulomb correlation U and the effective ferromagnetic exchange interaction J of Fe 3d electrons are both dramatically strengthened and out-of-plane directionally entangled by the unusual coupling between Fe3O4 thin film and the amorphous SiO2 substrate.

Growth of (NaxKy)FezSe2 crystals by chlorides flux at low temperatures

(NaxKy)FezSe2 crystals are prepared by Na, Fe, and Se as starting materials in NaCl/KCl flux at low temperatures~720 °C. It is found that K is more preferred than Na to enter in between FeSe layers and forms the phase. Thus-obtained crystals contain more superconducting phase in volume fraction and exhibit new features in transport property. Our results provide a promising new synthetic route for preparing quality crystals of iron selenide superconductors.
