The PYTHIA Facility

The development and operation of large-scale particle physics facilities rely not only on accelerators and detectors, but also on sustained, high-precision simulation infrastructure. Originating in Lund in the late 1970s and continuously developed in Sweden for nearly five decades, PYTHIA has evolved into one of the most widely used Monte Carlo event generators in high-energy physics. Today it functions as a facility-scale software infrastructure underpinning the physics programmes of major international experiments, including those at the Large Hadron Collider, and plays a central role in validation, tuning, and uncertainty evaluation. In this article, we present PYTHIA as a Swedish contribution to big science facilities. We outline its historical development, analyze its contemporary user base through citation and text-based studies, and map its integration across experimental frameworks, generator ecosystems, validation infrastructures, and emerging machine-learning workflows. These analyses show that PYTHIA We discuss the operational model and sustainability challenges associated with maintaining long-lived research software at facility scale. As particle physics moves toward the High-Luminosity LHC era and future facilities such as the EIC and FCC, continued investment in robust, interoperable simulation infrastructure remains essential. Cosmic Ray Simulation with PYTHIA

We present recent developments in PYTHIA for the modelling of hadronic cascades in a medium. Several improvements have been made in the Angantyr model for collisions with nuclei, especially in the limit of low collision energies, allowing it to be used throughout the hadronic cascades. Also the simplified nuclear model in the PythiaCascade} module has been updated. We find that the two models give consistent results for cosmic ray air showers initiated by both high energy protons and nuclei.

A spacetime model for the perturbative swing

We present the development of a new colour reconnection model in PYTHIA where the full spacetime separation between partons constrains the reconnection probability throughout the final-state radiative shower. Building upon previous ideas of a perturbative dipole-based model, our objective is to introduce realistic spatially-based colour reconnections within the Angantyr model for heavy-ion collisions. Previous models were limited to the use of a rudimentary separation measure in the transverse plane to control reconnections. We investigate the impact of this novel scheme on final states in $\text{e}^+\text{e}^-$, pp, and pPb collisions as well as in PbPb collision systems and our main goal in this paper is to achieve a reasonable description of basic multiplicities in systems of varying sizes.

Going against the flow: Revealing the QCD degrees of freedom in hadronic collisions

In collisions between heavy nuclei, such as those at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, hydrodynamic models have successfully related measured azimuthal momentum anisotropies to the transverse shape of the collision region. For an elliptically shaped interaction area, the hydrodynamic pressure gradient is greater along the minor axis, resulting in increased particle momentum in that direction - a phenomenon known as positive elliptic flow. In this paper, we demonstrate that in smaller systems, such as proton-proton and peripheral ion-ion collisions, microscopic models for final state interactions, can produce anisotropies where the elliptic flow is negative - that is, the momentum is largest along the major axis, contrary to hydrodynamic predictions. We present results from two distinct microscopic models: one based on repulsion between string-like fields and another based on effective kinetic theory. Negative elliptic flow is a solid prediction of the string interaction model while in the model based on kinetic theory it is linked to a finite interaction range. Consequently, an experimental determination of the sign of elliptic flow, will provide novel insights into the degrees of freedom governing strong nuclear interactions in high-energy collisions and the way in which they interact.

Baryon correlations in Pythia

We present the results from our investigation of angular correlations between baryon pairs in the PYTHIA8 event generator. We show how colour reconnection models and hadronization mechanisms influence such angular correlations and in particular address the effect of gluons on the baryon production mechanism in the Lund string fragmentation model. We conclude by discussing the new theoretical ideas in comparison with the ALICE pp collision results for the baryon angular correlations. We propose a hypothesis for suppressing baryons produced in gluon jets and show how that may influence the angular correlations.

The dynamic hadronization of charm quarks in heavy-ion collisions

The PYTHIA8/ANGANTYR model for heavy ion collisions was recently updated with a mechanism for \textit{global colour reconnection}. The colour reconnection model used is QCD colour algebra inspired and enhances baryon production due to the formation of string junctions. In this paper, we present updates to the junction formation and string fragmentation mechanisms, connected to heavy quark fragmentation. This allows for the simulation of heavy quark fragmentation, using junction formation, in heavy ion collisions. The framework is validated for proton collisions, and we show results for charm baryon production in proton-lead collisions.

Non-Relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics in Parton Showers

Measurements of quarkonia isolation in jets at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have been shown to disagree with fixed-order non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) calculations, even at higher orders. Calculations using the fragmenting jet function formalism are able to better describe data but cannot provide full event-level predictions. In this work we provide an alternative model via NRQCD production of quarkonia in a timelike parton shower. We include this model in the Pythia 8 event generator and validate our parton-shower implementation against analytic forms of the relevant fragmentation functions. Finally, we make inclusive predictions of quarkonia production for the decay of the standard-model Higgs boson.

A spatially constrained QCD colour reconnection in pp, pA, and AA collisions in the PYTHIA8/Angantyr model

We present an updated version of the QCD-based colour reconnection model in PYTHIA8, where we constrain the range in impact parameter for which reconnections are allowed. In this way, we can introduce more realistic colour reconnections in the Angantyr model for heavy ion collisions, where previously only reconnections within separate nucleon sub-collisions have been allowed. We investigate how the new impact parameter constraint influences final states in pp collisions, and retune parameters of the multi-parton interaction parameters in PYTHIA to compensate so that minimum bias data are reproduced. We also study multiplicity distributions in pA collisions and find that, in order to counteract the loss in multiplicity due to the introduction of global colour reconnections, we need to modify some parameters in the Angantyr model while keeping the parameters tuned to pp fixed. With Angantyr we can then extrapolate to AA collisions without further parameter tuning and retaining a reasonable description of the basic multiplicity distributions.

Extending StringSpinner to handle vector-meson spin

Quark spin effects in hadronization were recently included in the PYTHIA 8 Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) process off a polarized proton or neutron target. The spin effects were activated via the external StringSpinner package, which is based on the string+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized hadronization, and were restricted to the production of pseudoscalar mesons in string fragmentation. The struck quark polarization could either be calculated using parametrizations of the transversity PDFs or be freely specified. In this article we present a major extension of StringSpinner that includes vector meson production in the PYTHIA 8 string fragmentation. The spin-dependent emission and decay processes of the vector mesons are described using the string+${}^3P_0$ model, which systematically accounts for the quark-spin degree of freedom in the fragmentation chain. The new package works with the version 8.3 of the PYTHIA event generator and it allows for a more complete and quantitative simulation of the final states in polarized semi-inclusive DIS events. Also, it can be used to study the transverse-spin effects for the production of vector mesons. After describing the new version of StringSpinner, examples of its usage in semi-inclusive DIS events are presented.

Adding quark spin effects to PYTHIA string fragmentation

Quark spin effects in hadronization have been recently included in the PYTHIA 8 event generator for the simulation of the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) process off a polarized nucleon target via the external StringSpinner package. The spin effects can be simulated for the production of pseudoscalar mesons using the string+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized quark fragmentation and parametrizations of the transversity PDFs. We present here a major development of StringSpinner which includes the production of vector mesons in the polarized PYTHIA 8 string fragmentation as well as their polarized decays. The package is validated and used to simulate the transverse-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS). The simulation results on the Collins and dihadron asymmetries for the final state mesons are compared with the asymmetries measured in SIDIS off transversely polarized protons. Also shown are the predictions for the Collins asymmetries for $ρ$ mesons produced in SIDIS off transversely polarized protons.

A standard convention for particle-level Monte Carlo event-variation weights

Streams of event weights in particle-level Monte Carlo event generators are a convenient and immensely CPU-efficient approach to express systematic uncertainties in phenomenology calculations, providing systematic variations on the nominal prediction within a single event sample. But the lack of a common standard for labelling these variation streams across different tools has proven to be a major limitation for event-processing tools and analysers alike. Here we propose a well-defined, extensible community standard for the naming, ordering, and interpretation of weight streams that will serve as the basis for semantically correct parsing and combination of such variations in both theoretical and experimental studies.

Impact of string interactions on the space-time evolution of hadronic vertices

We investigate the space-time picture of string evolution and hadron production in a fully string-based model for high energy collisions involving heavy ions. We find that although the density strings is quite large at the time of hadronization in a central heavy ion collision, the initial overlap between them right after the collisions is not necessarily large. We also find that when including string--string interactions using the so-called shoving model, the density of strings is decreased which should dampen the rapid increase in string tension in the rope hadronization with multiplicity that we found in a previous paper.

Jet modifications from colour rope formation in dense systems of non-parallel strings

We revisit our rope model for string fragmentation that has been shown to give a reasonable description of strangeness and baryon enhancement in high-multiplicity pp events at the LHC. A key feature of the model is that the enhancement is driven by the increased string tension due to strings overlapping in dense systems. By introducing an improved space-time picture for the overlap between fragmenting strings, where also non-parallel strings are properly taken into account, we are now able to investigate the enhancement both in jets and in the underlying event in a consistent way.

Strangeness enhancement across collision systems without a plasma

We present novel rope hadronization results for strange hadron enhancement in pp, pPb, and PbPb collisions using PYTHIA/Angantyr at LHC energies. With the rope model for string fragmentation, we find that the strangeness and baryon enhancement has a coherent increase across all collision systems as a function of average charged central multiplicity, in qualitative agreement with LHC data. In AA collisions, we find that the baryonic yields overshoot data at high multiplicities, and we discuss how a combination of rope hadronization with other string interactions may tame this rise.

A comprehensive guide to the physics and usage of PYTHIA 8.3

This manual describes the PYTHIA 8.3 event generator, the most recent version of an evolving physics tool used to answer fundamental questions in particle physics. The program is most often used to generate high-energy-physics collision "events", i.e. sets of particles produced in association with the collision of two incoming high-energy particles, but has several uses beyond that. The guiding philosophy is to produce and reproduce properties of experimentally obtained collisions as accurately as possible. The program includes a wide ranges of reactions within and beyond the Standard Model, and extending to heavy ion physics. Emphasis is put on phenomena where strong interactions play a major role. The manual contains both pedagogical and practical components. All included physics models are described in enough detail to allow the user to obtain a cursory overview of used assumptions and approximations, enabling an informed evaluation of the program output. A number of the most central algorithms are described in enough detail that the main results of the program can be reproduced independently, allowing further development of existing models or the addition of new ones. Finally, a chapter dedicated fully to the user is included towards the end, providing pedagogical examples of standard use cases, and a detailed description of a number of external interfaces. The program code, the online manual, and the latest version of this print manual can be found on the PYTHIA web page: https://www.pythia.org/

Hyperfine splitting effects in string hadronization

We revisit the recipe for hadron formation in the Lund string hadronization model. Given an incoming quark or quark-diquark pair, weights for hadron formation are updated to take hyperfine splitting effects arising from the mass difference between u, d-type and s-type quarks. We find that the procedure improves the description of hadron yields in $\mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{e}^-$ collisions and the $ϕ$ cross section in neutral current DIS. We also show results for proton collisions, and discuss the future use of this study in the context of small system collectivity.

StringSpinner -- adding spin to the PYTHIA string fragmentation

StringSpinner is a plugin for the introduction of the spin effects in the hadronization part of the PYTHIA 8 event generator. The spin effects are generated for pseudoscalar meson production by propagating the quark polarization along the fragmentation chain according to the rules of the quantum mechanical string+${}^3P_0$ model. By using parametrizations for the transversity parton distribution functions, StringSpinner allows to simulate the polarized semi inclusive deep inelastic scattering process on protons and neutrons. The instructions to use StringSpinner and to modify the parametrizations of the transversity distribution functions are presented, as well as an example of the calculation of the Collins asymmetries as obtained from simulations of the transversely polarized semi inclusive deep inelastic scattering process.
