Hierarchy of time scales in kinetically constrained models via stochastic-generator expansion

We revisit the hierarchy of relaxation time scales in stochastic kinetically constrained models (KCMs) obeying detailed balance, using an expansion method developed recently for their quantum counterparts. In the classical setting, we expand the stochastic generator in the low-temperature equilibrium concentration of excitations. As in quantum KCMs, successive truncations of the expansion reveal a nested hierarchy of metastable configurations that remain frozen on progressively longer time scales. Applying the method to the high-to-low temperature quench in the classical one-dimensional East and Fredrickson-Andersen models, we recover the known hierarchy of metastable plateaus and the associated perturbative time scales. We find that the hierarchical time scales are related to the smallest domain lengths. Our results show that the method developed for quantum kinetically constrained models can be used to provide a systematic description of slow relaxation in their classical counterparts as well.

Slow dynamics from a nested hierarchy of frozen states

We identify the mechanism of slow heterogeneous relaxation in quantum kinetically constrained models (KCMs) in which the potential energy strength is controlled by a coupling parameter. The regime of slow relaxation includes the large-coupling limit. By expanding around that limit, we reveal a \emph{nested hierarchy} of states that remain frozen on time scales determined by powers of the coupling. The classification of such states, together with the evolution of their Krylov complexity, reveals that these time scales are related to the distance between the sites where facilitated dynamics is allowed by the kinetic constraint. While correlations within frozen states relax slowly and exhibit metastable plateaus that persist on time scales set by powers of the coupling parameter, the correlations in the rest of the states decay rapidly. We compute the plateau heights of correlations across all frozen states up to second-order corrections in the inverse coupling. Our results explain slow relaxation in quantum KCMs and elucidate dynamical heterogeneity by relating the relaxation times to the spatial separations between the active regions.

Superdiffusion and anomalous fluctuations in chiral integrable dynamics

Symmetries strongly influence transport properties of quantum many-body systems, and can lead to deviations from the generic case of diffusion. In this work, we study the impact of time-reversal symmetry breaking on the transport and its universal aspects in integrable chiral spin ladders. We observe that the infinite-temperature spin transport is superdiffusive with a dynamical critical exponent z = 3/2 matching the one of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, which also lacks the time reversal symmetry. However, we find that fluctuations of the net magnetization transfer deviate from the KPZ predictions. Moreover, the full probability distribution of the associated spin current obeys fluctuation symmetry despite broken time-reversal and space-reflection symmetries. To further investigate the role of conserved quantities, we introduce an integrable quantum circuit that shares the essential symmetries with the chiral ladder, and which exhibits analogous dynamical behaviour in the absence of energy conservation. Our work shows that time-reversal symmetry breaking is compatible with superdiffusion, but insufficient to stabilize the KPZ universality in integrable systems. This suggests that additional fundamental features are missing in order to identify the emergence of such dynamics in quantum matter.

Integrability is generic in homogeneous U(1)-invariant nearest-neighbor qubit circuits

Integrability is an exceptional property believed to hold only for systems with fine-tuned parameters. Contrary, we explicitly show that in homogeneous nearest-neighbor qubit circuits with a U(1) symmetry, i.e., circuits that repeatedly apply the same magnetization-conserving two-qubit gate, this is not the case. There, integrability is generic: all such brickwall qubit circuits are integrable, even with a randomly selected gate. We identify two phases with different conservation laws, transport properties, and strong zero edge modes. Experimentally important is the fact that varying any one of the parameters in the generic U(1) gate, one will typically cross the critical manifold that separates the two phases. Finally, we report on an unconventional time-reversal symmetry causing the system with open boundary conditions to be in the orthogonal class, while the one with periodic boundary conditions is in the unitary class.

Quantum many-body spin ratchets

Introducing a class of SU(2) invariant quantum unitary circuits generating chiral transport, we examine the role of broken space-reflection and time-reversal symmetries on spin transport properties. Upon adjusting parameters of local unitary gates, the dynamics can be either chaotic or integrable. The latter corresponds to a generalization of the space-time discretized (Trotterized) higher-spin quantum Heisenberg chain. We demonstrate that breaking of space-reflection symmetry results in a drift in the dynamical spin susceptibility. Remarkably, we find a universal drift velocity given by a simple formula which, at zero average magnetization, depends only on the values of SU(2) Casimir invariants associated with local spins. In the integrable case, the drift velocity formula is confirmed analytically based on the exact solution of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. Finally, by inspecting the large fluctuations of the time-integrated current between two halves of the system in stationary maximum-entropy states, we demonstrate violation of the Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry, implying that such states cannot be regarded as equilibrium ones. We show that the scaled cumulant generating function of the time-integrated current instead obeys a generalized fluctuation relation.

Integrability and charge transport in asymmetric quantum-circuit geometries

We revisit the integrability of quantum circuits constructed from two-qubit unitary gates $U$ that satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation. A brickwork arrangement of $U$ typically corresponds to an integrable Trotterization of some Hamiltonian dynamics. Here, we consider more general circuit geometries which include circuits without any nontrivial space periodicity. We show that any time-periodic quantum circuit in which $U$ is applied to each pair of neighbouring qubits exactly once per period remains integrable. We further generalize this framework to circuits with time-varying two-qubit gates. The spatial arrangement of gates in the integrable circuits considered herein can break the space-reflection symmetry even when $U$ itself is symmetric. By analyzing the dynamical spin susceptibility on ballistic hydrodynamic scale, we investigate how an asymmetric arrangement of gates affects the spin transport. While it induces nonzero higher odd moments in the dynamical spin susceptibility, the first moment, which corresponds to a drift in the spreading of correlations, remains zero. We explain this within a quasiparticle picture which suggests that a nonzero drift necessitates gates acting on distinct degrees of freedom.

Nonequilibrium symmetry-protected topological order: emergence of semilocal Gibbs ensembles

We consider nonequilibrium time evolution in quantum spin chains after a global quench. Usually a nonequilibium quantum many-body system locally relaxes to a (generalised) Gibbs ensemble built from conserved operators with quasilocal densities. Here we exhibit explicit examples of local Hamiltonians that possess conservation laws with densities that are not quasilocal but act as such in the symmetry-restricted space where time evolution occurs. Because of them, the stationary state emerging at infinite time can exhibit exceptional features. We focus on a specific example with a spin-flip symmetry, which is the commonest global symmetry encountered in spin-$1/2$ chains. Among the exceptional properties, we find that, at late times, the excess of entropy of a spin block triggered by a local perturbation in the initial state grows logarithmically with the subsystem's length. We establish a connection with symmetry-protected topological order in equilibrium at zero temperature and study the melting of the order induced either by a (symmetry-breaking) rotation of the initial state or by an increase of the temperature.

Slow heterogeneous relaxation due to constraints in dual XXZ models

With the aim to understand the role of the constraints in the thermalisation of quantum systems, we study the dynamics of a family of kinetically constrained models arising through duality from the XXZ spin chain. We find that integrable and nonintegrable deformations around the stochastic point give rise to ground state phase transitions between localised and delocalised phases, which in turn determine the nature of the relaxation dynamics at finite energy densities. While in the delocalised phase thermalisation is fast and homogeneous, in the localised phase relaxation is slow, temporal autocorrelations exhibit plateaus indicative of metastability, and the growth of entanglement is heterogeneous in space. Furthermore, by considering relaxation from initial product states, we demostrate that this slow thermalisation can be rationalised directly from the presence of constraints in the dynamics.

Macroscopic effects of localised measurements in jammed states of quantum spin chains

A quantum jammed state can be seen as a state where the phase space available to particles shrinks to zero, an interpretation quite accurate in integrable systems, where stable quasiparticles scatter elastically. We consider the integrable dual folded XXZ model, which is equivalent to the XXZ model in the limit of large anisotropy. We perform a jamming-breaking localised measurement in a jammed state. We find that jamming is locally restored, but local observables exhibit nontrivial time evolution on macroscopic, ballistic scales, without ever relaxing back to their initial values.

Measurement catastrophe and ballistic spread of charge density with vanishing current

One of the features of many-body quantum systems with Hilbert-space fragmentation is the existence of stationary states manifesting quantum jamming. It was recently shown that these are "states with memory", in which, e.g., measuring a localised observable has everlasting macroscopic effects. We study such a measurement catastrophe with an example that stands out for its clarity. We show in particular that at late times the expectation value of a charge density becomes a nontrivial function of the ratio between distance and time notwithstanding the corresponding current approaching zero.

The Folded Spin-1/2 XXZ Model: II. Thermodynamics and Hydrodynamics with a Minimal Set of Charges

We study the (dual) folded spin-1/2 XXZ model in the thermodynamic limit. We focus, in particular, on a class of local macrostates that includes Gibbs ensembles. We develop a thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz description and work out generalised hydrodynamics at the leading order. Remarkably, in the ballistic scaling limit the junction of two local macrostates results in a discontinuity in the profile of essentially any local observable.

The Folded Spin-1/2 XXZ Model: I. Diagonalisation, Jamming, and Ground State Properties

We study an effective Hamiltonian generating time evolution of states on intermediate time scales in the strong-coupling limit of the spin-1/2 XXZ model. To leading order, it describes an integrable model with local interactions. We solve it completely by means of a coordinate Bethe Ansatz that manifestly breaks the translational symmetry. We demonstrate the existence of exponentially many jammed states and estimate their stability under the leading correction to the effective Hamiltonian. Some ground state properties of the model are discussed.

Rigorous bounds on dynamical response functions and time-translation symmetry breaking

Dynamical response functions are standard tools for probing local physics near the equilibrium. They provide information about relaxation properties after the equilibrium state is weakly perturbed. In this paper we focus on systems which break the assumption of thermalization by exhibiting persistent temporal oscillations. We provide rigorous bounds on the Fourier components of dynamical response functions in terms of extensive or local dynamical symmetries, i.e. extensive or local operators with periodic time dependence. Additionally, we discuss the effects of spatially inhomogeneous dynamical symmetries. The bounds are explicitly implemented on the example of an interacting Floquet system, specifically in the integrable Trotterization of the Heisenberg XXZ model.

Inhomogeneous MPA and exact steady states of boundary driven spin chains at large dissipation

We find novel site-dependent Lax operators in terms of which we demonstrate exact solvability of a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, with jump operators polarizing the boundary spins in arbitrary directions. We write the corresponding nonequilibrium steady state using an inhomogeneous MPA, where the constituent matrices satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence relations. Although these matrices can be embedded into an infinite-dimensional auxiliary space, we have verified that they cannot be simultaneously put into a tridiagonal form, not even in the case of axially symmetric (XXZ) bulk interactions and general nonlongitudinal boundary dissipation. We expect our results to have further fundamental applications for the construction of nonlocal integrals of motion for the open XYZ model with arbitrary boundary fields, or the eight-vertex model.

Exact nonequilibrium steady state of open XXZ/XYZ spin-1/2 chain with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We investigate a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, described by Lindblad master equation. The nonequilibrium steady state is expressed in terms of a matrix product ansatz using novel site-dependent Lax operators. The components of Lax operators satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence equations that generalize the defining algebraic relations of the quantum group $U_q(sl_2)$. We reveal connection between the nonequilibrium steady state of the nonunitary dynamics and the respective integrable model with edge magnetic fields, described by coherent unitary dynamics.

Ballistic spin transport in a periodically driven integrable quantum system

We demonstrate ballistic spin transport of an integrable unitary quantum circuit, which can be understood either as a paradigm of an integrable periodically driven (Floquet) spin chain, or as a Trotterized anisotropic ($XXZ$) Heisenberg spin-1/2 model. We construct an analytic family of quasi-local conservation laws that break the spin-reversal symmetry and compute a lower bound on the spin Drude weight which is found to be a fractal function of the anisotropy parameter. Extensive numerical simulations of spin transport suggest that this fractal lower bound is in fact tight.

Integrable Trotterization: Local Conservation Laws and Boundary Driving

We discuss a general procedure to construct an integrable real-time trotterization of interacting lattice models. As an illustrative example we consider a spin-$1/2$ chain, with continuous time dynamics described by the isotropic ($XXX$) Heisenberg Hamiltonian. For periodic boundary conditions local conservation laws are derived from an inhomogeneous transfer matrix and a boost operator is constructed. In the continuous time limit these local charges reduce to the known integrals of motion of the Heisenberg chain. In a simple Kraus representation we also examine the nonequilibrium setting, where our integrable cellular automaton is driven by stochastic processes at the boundaries. We show explicitly, how an exact nonequilibrium steady state density matrix can be written in terms of a staggered matrix product ansatz. This simple trotterization scheme, in particular in the open system framework, could prove to be a useful tool for experimental simulations of the lattice models in terms of trapped ion and atom optics setups.

Quasilocal Conservation Laws in the Quantum Hirota Model

Extensivity of conservation laws of the quantum Hirota model on a $1+1$ dimensional lattice is considered. This model can be interpreted in terms of an integrable many-body quantum Floquet dynamics. We establish the procedure to generate a continuous family of quasilocal conservation laws from the conserved operators proposed by Faddeev and Volkov. The Hilbert-Schmidt kernel which allows the calculation of inner products of these new conservation laws is explicitly computed. This result has potential applications in quantum quench and transport problems in integrable quantum field theories.
