Algebraic points of small height missing a union of varieties

Let $K$ be a number field, $\overline{\mathbb Q}$, or the field of rational functions on a smooth projective curve over a perfect field, and let $V$ be a subspace of $K^N$, $N \geq 2$. Let $Z_K$ be a union of varieties defined over $K$ such that $V \nsubseteq Z_K$. We prove the existence of a point of small height in $V \setminus Z_K$, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of the height of $V$ and the degree of a hypersurface containing $Z_K$, where dependence on both is optimal. This generalizes and improves upon the previous results of the author. As a part of our argument, we provide a basic extension of the function field version of Siegel's lemma of J. Thunder to an inequality with inhomogeneous heights. As a corollary of the method, we derive an explicit lower bound for the number of algebraic integers of bounded height in a fixed number field.

Small zeros of hermitian forms over a quaternion algebra

Let $D$ be a positive definite quaternion algebra over a totally real number field $K$, $F(X,Y)$ a hermitian form in 2N variables over $D$, and $Z$ a right $D$-vector space which is isotropic with respect to $F$. We prove the existence of a small-height basis for $Z$ over $D$, such that $F(X,X)$ vanishes at each of the basis vectors. This constitutes a non-commutative analogue of a theorem of Vaaler, and presents an extension of the classical theorem of Cassels on small zeros of rational quadratic forms to the context of quaternion algebras.

Revisiting the hexagonal lattice: on optimal lattice circle packing

In this note we give a simple proof of the classical fact that the hexagonal lattice gives the highest density circle packing among all lattices in $R^2$. With the benefit of hindsight, we show that the problem can be restricted to the important class of well-rounded lattices, on which the density function takes a particularly simple form. Our proof emphasizes the role of well-rounded lattices for discrete optimization problems.

Integral orthogonal bases of small height for real polynomial spaces

Let $P_N(R)$ be the space of all real polynomials in $N$ variables with the usual inner product $<, >$ on it, given by integrating over the unit sphere. We start by deriving an explicit combinatorial formula for the bilinear form representing this inner product on the space of coefficient vectors of all polynomials in $P_N(R)$ of degree $\leq M$. We exhibit two applications of this formula. First, given a finite dimensional subspace $V$ of $P_N(R)$ defined over $Q$, we prove the existence of an orthogonal basis for $(V, <, >)$, consisting of polynomials of small height with integer coefficients, providing an explicit bound on the height; this can be viewed as a version of Siegel's lemma for real polynomial inner product spaces. Secondly, we derive a criterion for a finite set of points on the unit sphere in $R^N$ to be a spherical $M$-design.

On similarity classes of well-rounded sublattices of $\mathbb Z^2$

A lattice is called well-rounded if its minimal vectors span the corresponding Euclidean space. In this paper we study the similarity classes of well-rounded sublattices of ${\mathbb Z}^2$. We relate the set of all such similarity classes to a subset of primitive Pythagorean triples, and prove that it has structure of a noncommutative infinitely generated monoid. We discuss the structure of a given similarity class, and define a zeta function corresponding to each similarity class. We relate it to Dedekind zeta of ${\mathbb Z}[i]$, and investigate the growth of some related Dirichlet series, which reflect on the distribution of well-rounded lattices. Finally, we construct a sequence of similarity classes of well-rounded sublattices of ${\mathbb Z}^2$, which gives good circle packing density and converges to the hexagonal lattice as fast as possible with respect to a natural metric we define.

Effective structure theorems for symplectic spaces via height

Given a $2k$-dimensional symplectic space $(Z,F)$ in $N$ variables, $1 < 2k \leq N$, over a global field $K$, we prove the existence of a symplectic basis for $(Z,F)$ of bounded height. This can be viewed as a version of Siegel's lemma for a symplectic space. As corollaries of our main result, we prove the existence of a small-height decomposition of $(Z,F)$ into hyperbolic planes, as well as the existence of two generating flags of totally isotropic subspaces. These present analogues of known results for quadratic spaces. A distinctive feature of our argument is that it works simultaneously for essentially any field with a product formula, algebraically closed or not. In fact, we prove an even more general version of these statements, where canonical height is replaced with twisted height. All bounds on height are explicit.

On distribution of well-rounded sublattices of $\mathbb Z^2$

A lattice is called well-rounded if its minimal vectors span the corresponding Euclidean space. In this paper we completely describe well-rounded full-rank sublattices of ${\mathbb Z}^2$, as well as their determinant and minima sets. We show that the determinant set has positive density, deriving an explicit lower bound for it, while the minima set has density 0. We also produce formulas for the number of such lattices with a fixed determinant and with a fixed minimum. These formulas are related to the number of divisors of an integer in short intervals and to the number of its representations as a sum of two squares. We investigate the growth of the number of such lattices with a fixed determinant as the determinant grows, exhibiting some determinant sequences on which it is particularly large. To this end, we also study the behavior of the associated zeta function, comparing it to the Dedekind zeta function of Gaussian integers and to the Solomon zeta function of ${\mathbb Z}^2$. Our results extend automatically to well-rounded sublattices of any lattice $A {\mathbb Z}^2$, where A is an element of the real orthogonal group $O_2({\mathbb R})$.

Small zeros of quadratic forms over the algebraic closure of Q

Let $N \geq 2$ be an integer, $F$ a quadratic form in $N$ variables over $\bar{\mathbb Q}$, and $Z \subseteq \bar{\mathbb Q}^N$ an $L$-dimensional subspace, $1 \leq L \leq N$. We prove the existence of a small-height maximal totally isotropic subspace of the bilinear space $(Z,F)$. This provides an analogue over $\bar{\mathbb Q}$ of a well-known theorem of Vaaler proved over number fields. We use our result to prove an effective version of Witt decomposition for a bilinear space over $\bar{\mathbb Q}$. We also include some related effective results on orthogonal decomposition and structure of isometries for a bilinear space over $\bar{\mathbb Q}$. This extends previous results of the author over number fields. All bounds on height are explicit.

Search bounds for zeros of polynomials over the algebraic closure of Q

We discuss existence of explicit search bounds for zeros of polynomials with coefficients in a number field. Our main result is a theorem about the existence of polynomial zeros of small height over the field of algebraic numbers outside of unions of subspaces. All bounds on the height are explicit.

Frobenius problem and the covering radius of a lattice

Let $N \geq2$ and let $1 < a_1 < ... < a_N$ be relatively prime integers. Frobenius number of this $N$-tuple is defined to be the largest positive integer that cannot be expressed as $\sum_{i=1}^N a_i x_i$ where $x_1,...,x_N$ are non-negative integers. The condition that $gcd(a_1,...,a_N)=1$ implies that such number exists. The general problem of determining the Frobenius number given $N$ and $a_1,...,a_N$ is NP-hard, but there has been a number of different bounds on the Frobenius number produced by various authors. We use techniques from the geometry of numbers to produce a new bound, relating Frobenius number to the covering radius of the null-lattice of this $N$-tuple. Our bound is particularly interesting in the case when this lattice has equal successive minima, which, as we prove, happens infinitely often.

Integral points of small height outside of a hypersurface

Let $F$ be a non-zero polynomial with integer coefficients in $N$ variables of degree $M$. We prove the existence of an integral point of small height at which $F$ does not vanish. Our basic bound depends on $N$ and $M$ only. We separately investigate the case when $F$ is decomposable into a product of linear forms, and provide a more sophisticated bound. We also relate this problem to a certain extension of Siegel's Lemma as well as to Faltings' version of it. Finally we exhibit an application of our results to a discrete version of the Tarski plank problem.

Siegel's lemma with additional conditions

Let $K$ be a number field, and let $W$ be a subspace of $K^N$, $N \geq 1$. Let $V_1,...,V_M$ be subspaces of $K^N$ of dimension less than dimension of $W$. We prove the existence of a point of small height in $W \setminus \bigcup_{i=1}^M V_i$, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of heights of $W$ and $V_1,...,V_M$. Our main tool is a counting estimate we prove for the number of points of a subspace of $K^N$ inside of an adelic cube. As corollaries to our main result we derive an explicit bound on the height of a non-vanishing point for a decomposable form and an effective subspace extension lemma.

On effective Witt decomposition and Cartan-Dieudonne theorem

Let $K$ be a number field, and let $F$ be a symmetric bilinear form in $2N$ variables over $K$. Let $Z$ be a subspace of $K^N$. A classical theorem of Witt states that the bilinear space $(Z,F)$ can be decomposed into an orthogonal sum of hyperbolic planes, singular, and anisotropic components. We prove the existence of such a decomposition of small height, where all bounds on height are explicit in terms of heights of $F$ and $Z$. We also prove a special version of Siegel's Lemma for a bilinear space, which provides a small-height orthogonal decomposition into one-dimensional subspaces. Finally, we prove an effective version of Cartan-Dieudonn{é} theorem. Namely, we show that every isometry $σ$ of a regular bilinear space $(Z,F)$ can be represented as a product of reflections of small heights with an explicit bound on heights in terms of heights of $F$, $Z$, and $σ$.

Small Zeros of Quadratic Forms with Linear Conditions

Given a quadratic form and $M$ linear forms in $N+1$ variables with coefficients in a number field $K$, suppose that there exists a point in $K^{N+1}$ at which the quadratic form vanishes and all the linear forms do not. Then we show that there exists a point like this of relatively small height. This generalizes a result of D.W. Masser (1998). As a corollary of this result, we prove an extension of Cassels' theorem on small zeros of quadratic forms (1955) to non-singular small zeros over a number field.
