Viscous shock solutions to the stochastic Burgers equation

We define a notion of a viscous shock solution of the stochastic Burgers equation that connects "top" and "bottom" spatially stationary solutions of the same equation. Such shocks generally travel in space, but we show that they admit time-invariant measures when viewed in their own reference frames. Under such a measure, the viscous shock is a deterministic function of the bottom and top solutions and the shock location. However, the measure of the bottom and top solutions must be tilted to account for the change of reference frame. We also show a convergence result to these stationary shock solutions from solutions initially connecting two constants, as time goes to infinity.

The random heat equation in dimensions three and higher: the homogenization viewpoint

We consider the stochastic heat equation $\partial_{s}u =\frac{1}{2}Δu +(βV(s,y)-λ)u$, with a smooth space-time stationary Gaussian random field $V(s,y)$, in dimensions $d\geq 3$, with an initial condition $u(0,x)=u_0(\varepsilon x)$ and a suitably chosen $λ\in{\mathbb R}$. It is known that, for $β$ small enough, the diffusively rescaled solution $u^{\varepsilon}(t,x)=u(\varepsilon^{-2}t,\varepsilon^{-1}x)$ converges weakly to a scalar multiple of the solution $\bar u(t,x)$ of the heat equation with an effective diffusivity $a$, and that fluctuations converge, also in a weak sense, to the solution of the Edwards-Wilkinson equation with an effective noise strength $ν$ and the same effective diffusivity. In this paper, we derive a pointwise approximation $w^\varepsilon(t,x)=\bar u(t,x)Ψ^\varepsilon(t,x)+\varepsilon u_1^\varepsilon(t,x)$, where $Ψ^\varepsilon(t,x)=Ψ(t/\varepsilon^2,x/\varepsilon)$, $Ψ$ is a solution of the SHE with constant initial conditions, and $u^\varepsilon_1$ is an explicit corrector. We show that $Ψ(t,x)$ converges to a stationary process $\tilde Ψ(t,x)$ as $t\to\infty$, that $\mathbf{E}|u^\varepsilon(t,x)-w^\varepsilon(t, x)|^2$ converges pointwise to $0$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$, and that $\varepsilon^{-d/2+1}(u^\varepsilon-w^\varepsilon)$ converges weakly to $0$ for fixed $t$. As a consequence, we derive new representations of the diffusivity $a$ and effective noise strength $ν$. Our approach uses a Markov chain in the space of trajectories introduced in Gu, Ryzhik, and Zeitouni, "The Edwards-Wilkinson limit of the random heat equation in dimensions three and higher," as well as tools from homogenization theory. The corrector $u_1^\varepsilon(t,x)$ is constructed using a seemingly new approximation scheme on a mesoscopic time scale.

The distance between the two BBM leaders

We study the distance between the two rightmost particles in branching Brownian motion. Derrida and the second author have shown that the long-time limit $d_{12}$ of this random variable can be expressed in terms of PDEs related to the Fisher--KPP equation. We use such a representation to determine the sharp asymptotics of $\mathbb{P}(d_{12} > a)$ as $a\to+\infty$. These tail asymptotics were previously known to "exponential order;" we discover an algebraic correction to this behavior.

Chemotaxis and Reactions in Biology

Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in a variety of processes in biology and ecology. Quite often it acts to improve efficiency of biological reactions. One example is the immune system signalling, where infected tissues release chemokines attracting monocytes to fight invading bacteria. Another example is reproduction, where eggs release pheromones that attract sperm. A macro scale example is flower scent appealing to pollinators. In this paper we consider a system of PDE designed to model such processes. Our interest is to quantify the effect of chemotaxis on reaction rates compared to pure reaction-diffusion. We limit consideration to surface chemotaxis, which is well motivated from the point of view of many applications. Our results provide the first insight into situations where chemotaxis can be crucial for reaction success, and where its effect is likely to be limited. The proofs are based on new analytical tools; a significant part of the paper is dedicated to building up the linear machinery that can be useful in more general settings. In particular we establish precise estimates on the rates of convergence to ground state for a class of Fokker-Planck operators with potentials that grow at a logarithmic rate at infinity. These estimates are made possible by a new sharp weak weighted Poincaré inequality improving in particular a result of Bobkov and Ledoux.

Traveling waves in a mean field learning model

Lucas and Moll have proposed a system of forward-backward partial differential equations that model knowledge diffusion and economic growth. It arises from a microscopic model of learning for a mean-field type interacting system of individual agents. In this paper, we prove existence of traveling wave solutions to this system. They correspond to what is known in economics as balanced growth path solutions. We also study the dependence of the solutions and their propagation speed on various economic parameters of the system.

Current Distribution on Capacitive Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces

The distribution of electric current on an electrode surface in electrolyte varies with time due to charge accumulation at a capacitive interface, as well as due to electrode kinetics and concentration polarization in the medium. Initially, the potential at the electrode-electrolyte interface is uniform, resulting in a non-uniform current distribution due to the uneven ohmic drop of the potential in the medium. Over time, however, the non-uniform current density causes spatially varying rate of the charge accumulation at the interface, breaking down its equipotentiality. We developed an analytical model to describe such transition at a capacitive interface when the current is below the mass-transfer limitation, and demonstrated that the steady distribution of the current is achieved when the current density is proportional to the capacitance per unit area, which leads to linear voltage ramp at the electrode. More specific results regarding the dynamics of this transition are provided for a disk electrode, along with an experimental validation of the theoretical result. These findings are important for many electrochemical applications, and in particular, for proper design of the electro-neural interfaces.

The Bramson delay in the non-local Fisher-KPP equation

We consider the non-local Fisher-KPP equation modeling a population with individuals competing with each other for resources with a strength related to their distance, and obtain the asymptotics for the position of the invasion front starting from a localized population. Depending on the behavior of the competition kernel at infinity, the location of the front is either $2t - ({3}/2)\log t + O(1)$, as in the local case, or $2t - O(t^β)$ for some explicit $β\in (0,1)$. Our main tools here are alocal-in-time Harnack inequality and an analysis of the linearized problem with a suitable moving Dirichlet boundary condition. Our analysis also yields, for any $β\in(0,1)$, examples of Fisher-KPP type non-linearities $f\_β$ such that the front for the localFisher-KPP equation with reaction term $f\_β$ is at $2t - O(t^β)$.

Fluctuations of the solutions to the KPZ equation in dimensions three and higher

We prove, using probabilistic techniques and analysis on the Wiener space, that the large scale fluctuations of the KPZ equation in $d\geq 3$ with a small coupling constant, driven by a white in time and colored in space noise, are given by the Edwards-Wilkinson model. This gives an alternative proof, that avoids perturbation expansions, to the results of Magnen and Unterberger \cite{magnen2017diffusive}.

Fractional diffusion limit for a kinetic equation with an interface

We consider the limit of a linear kinetic equation, with reflection-transmission-absorption at an interface, with a degenerate scattering kernel. The equation arise from a microscopic chain of oscillators in contact with a heat bath. In the absence of the interface, the solutions exhibit a superdiffusive behavior in the long time limit. With the interface, the long time limit is the unique solution of a version of the fractional in space heat equation, with reflection-transmission-absorption at the interface. The limit problem corresponds to a certain stable process that is either absorbed, reflected, or transmitted upon crossing the interface.

The speed of a random front for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations with strong noise

We study the asymptotic speed of a random front for solutions $u_t(x)$ to stochastic reaction-diffusion equations of the form \[ \partial_tu=\farc{1}{2}\partial_x^2u+f(u)+σ\sqrt{u(1-u)}\dot{W}(t,x),~t\ge 0,~x\in\Rm, \] arising in population genetics. Here, $f$ is a continuous function with $f(0)=f(1)=0$, and such that~$|f(u)|\le K|u(1-u)|^γ$ with~$γ\ge 1/2$, and $\dot{W}(t,x)$ is a space-time Gaussian white noise. We assume that the initial condition $u_0(x)$ satisfies $0\le u_0(x)\le 1$ for all $x\in\Rm$, $u_0(x)=1$ for~$x R_0$. We show that when $σ>0$, for each $t>0$ there exist~$R(u_t)<+\infty$ and~$L(u_t)<-\infty$ such that $u_t(x)=0$ for $x>R(u_t)$ and $u_t(x)=1$ for~$x 0$ there exists a finite deterministic speed~$V(σ)\in\Rm$ so that~$R(u_t)/t\to V(σ)$ as $t\to+\infty$, almost surely. This is in dramatic contrast with the deterministic case $σ=0$ for nonlinearities of the type $f(u)=u^m(1-u)$ with $0 1/2$ there exists $c_f\in\Rm$, so that~$σ^2V(σ)\to c_f$ as~$σ\to+\infty$ and give a characterization of $c_f$. The last result complements a lower bound obtained by Conlon and Doering \cite{cd05} for the special case of $f(u)=u(1-u)$ where a duality argument is available.

Global well-posedness for the Euler alignment system with mildly singular interactions

We consider the Euler alignment system with mildly singular interaction kernels. When the local repulsion term is of the fractional type, global in time existence of smooth solutions was proved in\cite{do2018global,shvydkoy2017eulerian1,shvydkoy2017eulerian2,shvydkoy2017eulerian3}. Here, we consider a class of less singular interaction kernels and establish the global regularity of solutions as long as the interaction kernels are not integrable. The proof relies on modulus of continuity estimates for a class of parabolic integro-differential equations with a drift and mildly singular kernels.

Fluctuations of random semi-linear advection equations

We consider a semi-linear advection equation driven by a highly-oscillatory space-time Gaussian random field, with the randomness affecting both the drift and the nonlinearity. In the linear setting, classical results show that the characteristics converge in distribution to a homogenized Brownian motion, hence the point-wise law of the solution is close to a functional of the Brownian motion. Our main result is that the nonlinearity plays the role of a \emph{random diffeomorphism}, and the point-wise limiting distribution is obtained by applying the diffeomorphism to the limit in the linear setting.

High frequency limit for a chain of harmonic oscillators with a point Langevin thermostat

We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat at the origin. In the high frequency limit, we establish the reflection-transmission coefficients for the wave energy for the scattering of the thermostat. To our surprise, even though the thermostat fluctuations are time-dependent, the scattering does not couple wave energy at various frequencies.

The Edwards-Wilkinson limit of the random heat equation in dimensions three and higher

We consider the heat equation with a multiplicative Gaussian potential in dimensions $d\geq 3$. We show that the renormalized solution converges to the solution of a deterministic diffusion equation with an effective diffusivity. We also prove that the renormalized large scale random fluctuations are described by the Edwards-Wilkinson model, that is, the stochastic heat equation (SHE) with additive white noise, with an effective variance.

Refined long time asymptotics for Fisher-KPP fronts

We study the one-dimensional Fisher-KPP equation, with an initial condition $u_0(x)$ that coincides with the step function except on a compact set. A well-known result of M. Bramson states that, as $t\to+\infty$, the solution converges to a traveling wave located at the position $X(t)=2t-(3/2)\log t+x_0+o(1)$, with the shift $x_0$ that depends on $u_0$. U. Ebert and W. Van Saarloos have formally derived a correction to the Bramson shift, arguing that $X(t)=2t-(3/2)\log t+x_0-3\sqrtπ/\sqrt{t}+O(1/t)$. Here, we prove that this result does hold, with an error term of the size $O(1/t^{1-γ})$, for any $γ>0$. The interesting aspect of this asymptotics is that the coefficient in front of the $1/\sqrt{t}$-term does not depend on $u_0$.

Global regularity for the fractional Euler alignment system

We study a pressureless Euler system with a nonlinear density-dependent alignment term, originating in the Cucker-Smale swarming models. The alignment term is dissipative in the sense that it tends to equilibrate the velocities. Its density dependence is natural: the alignment rate increases in the areas of high density due to species discomfort. The diffusive term has the order of a fractional Laplacian $(-\partial_{xx})^{α/2}$, $α\in (0, 1)$. The corresponding Burgers equation with a linear dissipation of this type develops shocks in a finite time. We show that the alignment nonlinearity enhances the dissipation, and the solutions are globally regular for all $α\in (0, 1)$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of such regularization due to the non-local nonlinear modulation of dissipation.

The Bramson logarithmic delay in the cane toads equations

We study a nonlocal reaction-diffusion-mutation equation modeling the spreading of a cane toads population structured by a phenotypical trait responsible for the spatial diffusion rate. When the trait space is bounded, the cane toads equation admits traveling wave solutions [7]. Here, we prove a Bramson type spreading result: the lag between the position of solutions with localized initial data and that of the traveling waves grows as (3/(2$λ$ *)) log t. This result relies on a present-time Harnack inequality which allows to compare solutions of the cane toads equation to those of a Fisher-KPP type equation that is local in the trait variable.
