The explosion problem in a flow

We consider the explosion problem in an incompressible flow introduced in the paper of H. Berestycki, L. Kagan, G. Joulin and G. Sivashinsky. We use a novel $L^p-L^\infty$ estimate for elliptic advection-diffusion problems to show that the explosion threshold obeys a positive lower bound which is uniform in the advecting flow. We also identify the flows for which the explosion threshold tends to infinity as their amplitude grows and obtain an effective description of the explosion threshold in the strong flow asymptotics in a two-dimensional one-cell flow.

Traveling waves in a one-dimensional random medium

We consider solutions of a scalar reaction-diffusion equation of the ignition type with a random, stationary and ergodic reaction rate. We show that solutions of the Cauchy problem spread with a deterministic rate in the long time limit. We also establish existence of generalized random traveling waves and of transition fronts in general heterogeneous media.

KPP Pulsating Front Speed-up by Flows

We obtain a criterion for pulsating front speed-up by general periodic incompressible flows in two dimensions and in the presence of KPP nonlinearities. We achieve this by showing that the ratio of the minimal front speed and the effective diffusivity of the flow is bounded away from zero and infinity by constants independent of the flow. We also study speed-up of reaction-diffusion fronts by various examples of flows in two and three dimensions.

Passive tracer in a slowly decorrelating random flow with a large mean

We consider the movement of a particle advected by a random flow of the form $\vv+δ\bF(\vx)$, with $\vv\in\R^d$ a constant drift, $\bF(\vx)$ -- the fluctuation -- given by a zero mean, stationary random field and $δ\ll 1$ so that the drift dominates over the fluctuation. The two-point correlation matrix $\bR(\vx)$ of the random field decays as $|\vx|^{2α-2}$, as $|\vx|\to+\infty$ with $α<1$. The Kubo formula for the effective diffusion coefficient obtained in \cite{kp79} for rapidly decorrelating fields diverges when $1/2\leα<1$. We show formally that on the time scale $δ^{-1/α}$ the deviation of the trajectory from its mean $\by(t)=\vx(t)-\vv t$ converges to a fractional Brownian motion $B_α(t)$ in this range of the exponent $α$. We also prove rigorously upper and lower bounds which show that $\E[|\by(t)|^2]$ converges to zero for times $t\llδ^{-1/α}$ and to infinity on time scales $t\gg δ^{-1/α}$ as $δ\to 0$ when $α\in(1/2,1)$. On the other hand, when $α<1/2$ non-trivial behavior is observed on the time-scale $O(δ^{-2})$.

Wave field correlations in weakly mismatched random media

This paper concerns the derivation of a Fokker-Planck equation for the correlation of two high frequency wave fields propagating in two different random media. The mismatch between the random media need be small, on the order of the wavelength, and their correlation length need be large relative to the wavelength. The loss of correlation caused by the mismatch in the random media is quantified and the limit process for the phase difference is obtained. The derivation is based on a random Liouville equation to model high frequency correlations and on the method of characteristics to characterize mixing in the random Liouville equation. Applications of such correlation loss include the monitoring in time of random media and the analysis of time reversed waves in changing heterogeneous domains.

Stability of time reversed waves in changing media

We analyze the refocusing properties of time reversed waves that propagate in two different media during the forward and backward stages of a time-reversal experiment. We consider two regimes of wave propagation modeled by the paraxial wave equation with a smooth random refraction coefficient and the Itô-Schrödinger equation, respectively. In both regimes, we rigorously characterize the refocused signal in the high frequency limit and show that it is statistically stable, that is, independent of the realizations of the two media. The analysis is based on a characterization of the high frequency limit of the Wigner transform of two fields propagating in different media. The refocusing quality of the back-propagated signal is determined by the cross correlation of the two media. When the two media decorrelate, two distinct de-focusing effects are observed. The first one is a purely absorbing effect due to the loss of coherence at a fixed frequency. The second one is a phase modulation effect of the refocused signal at each frequency. This causes de-focusing of the back-propagated signal in the time domain.

Fronts in reactive convection: bounds, stability and instability

We consider front propagation in a reactive Boussinesq system in an infinite vertical strip. We establish nonlinear stability of planar fronts for narrow domains when the Rayleigh number is not too large. Planar fronts are shown to be linearly unstable with respect to long wavelength perturbations if the Rayleigh number is sufficiently large. We also prove uniform bounds on the bulk burning rate and the Nusselt number in the KPP reaction case.
