Quench dynamics of a strongly interacting resonant Bose gas

We explore the dynamics of a Bose gas following its quench to a strongly interacting regime near a Feshbach resonance. Within a self-consistent Bogoliubov analysis we find that after the initial condensate-quasiparticle Rabi oscillations, at long time scales the gas is characterized by a nonequilibrium steady-state momentum distribution function, with depletion, condensate density and contact that deviate strongly from their corresponding equilibrium values. These are in a qualitative agreement with recent experiments on Rb85 by Makotyn, et al. Our analysis also suggests that for sufficiently deep quenches close to the resonance the nonequilibrium state undergoes a phase transition to a fully depleted state, characterized by a vanishing condensate density.

Smectic order, pinning, and phase transition in a smectic liquid crystal cell with a random substrate

We study smectic-liquid-crystal order in a cell with a heterogeneous substrate imposing surface random positional and orientational pinnings. Proposing a minimal random elastic model, we demonstrate that, for a thick cell, the smectic state without a rubbed substrate is always unstable at long scales and, for weak random pinning, is replaced by a smectic glass state. We compute the statistics of the associated substrate-driven distortions and the characteristic smectic domain size on the heterogeneous substrate and in the bulk. We find that for weak disorder, the system exhibits a three-dimensional temperature-controlled phase transition between a weakly and strongly pinned smectic glass states akin to the Cardy-Ostlund phase transition. We explore experimental implications of the predicted phenomenology and suggest that it provides a plausible explanation for the experimental observations on polarized light microscopy and x-ray scattering.

Freezing of an unconventional two-dimensional plasma

We study an unconventional two-dimensional, two-component classical plasma on a sphere, with emphasis on detecting signatures of melting transitions. This system is relevant to Ising-type quantum Hall states, and is unconventional in the sense that it features particles interacting via two different two-dimensional Coulomb interactions. One species of particles in the plasma carries charge of both types (Q_1,Q_2), while the other species carries only charge of the second type (0,-Q_2). We find signatures of a freezing transition at Q_1^2 approximately 140. This means that the species with charge of both types will form a Wigner crystal, whereas the species with charge of the second type also shows signatures of being a Wigner crystal, due to the attractive inter-component interaction of the second type. Moreover, there is also a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition at Q_2^2 approximately 4, at which the two species of particles bind to form molecules that are neutral with respect to the second Coulomb interaction. These two transitions appear to be independent of each other, giving a rectangular phase diagram. As a special case, Q_2=0 describes the (conventional) two-dimensional one-component plasma. Our study is consistent with previous studies of this plasma, and sheds new light on the freezing transition of this system.

Frustrated quantum critical theory of putative spin-liquid phenomenology in 6H-B-Ba3NiSb2O9

A recently discovered material, 6H-B-Ba3NiSb2O9 was found to display unusual low-temperature phenomenology, interpreted as a quantum spin liquid with spin S = 1 on a triangular lattice. We study a spin S = 1 quantum exchange model on an AB stacked triangular lattice near its quantum paramagnet-to-spiral magnet transition, driven by easy-plane single-ion anisotropy. We demonstrate that the frustrated inter- and intra-layer exchange interactions induce contour lines of low energy excitations that lead to a broad crossover regime of linear-temperature dependence of the specific heat. Based on this and a variety of other predictions, we argue that the observed phenomenology can be understood in terms of a conventional picture of a proximity to this frustrated critical point.

Smectic-glass transition in a liquid crystal cell with a "dirty" substrate

We explore the smectic liquid crystal order in a cell with a "dirty" substrate imposing random pinnings. Within harmonic elasticity we find a subtle three-dimensional surface disorder-driven transition into a pinned smectic-glass, controlled by a three-dimensional Cardy-Ostlund-like fixed line, akin to a super-rough phase of a two-dimensional xy model. We compute the associated random substrate-driven distortions of the smectic-glass state, identify the characteristic length scales on the heterogeneous substrate and in the bulk, and discuss a variety of experimental signatures.

Quantum liquid-crystal order in resonant atomic gases

I review recent studies that predict quantum liquid-crystalline orders in resonant atomic gases. As examples of such putative systems I will discuss an s-wave resonant imbalanced Fermi gas and a p-wave resonant Bose gas. In the former, the liquid-crystalline smectic, nematic and rich variety of other descendant states emerge from strongly quantum- and thermally- fluctuating Fulde-Ferrell and Larkin-Ovchinnikov states, driven by a competition between resonant pairing and Fermi-surface mismatch. In the latter, at intermediate detuning the p-wave resonant interaction generically drives Bose-condensation at a finite momentum, set by a competition between atomic kinetic energy and atom-molecule hybridization. Because of the underlying rotationally-invariant environment of the atomic gas trapped isotropically, the putative striped superfluid is a realization of a quantum superfluid smectic, that can melt into a variety of interesting phases, such as a quantum nematic. I will discuss the corresponding rich phase diagrams and transitions, as well the low-energy properties of the phases and fractional topological defects generic to striped superfluids and their fluctuation-driven descendants.

Finite-momentum superfluidity and phase transitions in a p-wave resonant Bose gas

We study a degenerate two-species gas of bosonic atoms interacting through a p-wave Feshbach resonance as for example realized in a Rb85-Rb87 mixture. We show that in addition to a conventional atomic and a p-wave molecular spinor-1 superfluidity at large positive and negative detunings, respectively, the system generically exhibits a finite momentum atomic-molecular superfluidity at intermediate detuning around the unitary point. We analyze the detailed nature of the corresponding phases and the associated quantum and thermal phase transitions.

Lattice Induced Resonances in One Dimensional Bosonic Systems

We study the resonant effects produced when a Feshbach dimer crosses a scattering continuum band of atoms in an optical lattice. We numerically obtain the exact spectrum of two particles in a one-dimensional lattice and develop an effective atom-dimer Hamiltonian that accurately captures resonant effects. The lattice-induced resonances lead to the formation of bound states simultaneously above and below the scattering continuum and significantly modify the curvature of the dimer dispersion relation. The nature of the atom-dimer coupling depends strongly on the parity of the dimer state leading to a novel coupling in the case of negative parity dimers. From the exact solutions we extract the dimer Wannier function from which we quantitatively determine the effective Hamiltonian parameters for a many-body description.

Fluctuations and phase transitions in Larkin-Ovchinnikov liquid crystal states of population-imbalanced resonant Fermi gas

Motivated by a realization of imbalanced Feshbach-resonant atomic Fermi gases, we formulate a low-energy theory of the Fulde-Ferrell and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) states and use it to analyze fluctuations, stability, and phase transitions in these enigmatic finite momentum-paired superfluids. Focusing on the unidirectional LO pair-density wave state, that spontaneously breaks the continuous rotational and translational symmetries, we show that it is characterized by two Goldstone modes, corresponding to a superfluid phase and a smectic phonon. Because of the liquid-crystalline "softness" of the latter, at finite temperature the 3d state is characterized by a vanishing LO order parameter, quasi-Bragg peaks in the structure and momentum distribution functions, and a "charge"-4, paired Cooper-pairs, off-diagonal-long-range order, with a superfluid-stiffness anisotropy that diverges near a transition into a nonsuperfluid state. In addition to conventional integer vortices and dislocations the LO superfluid smectic exhibits composite half-integer vortex-dislocation defects. A proliferation of defects leads to a rich variety of descendant states, such as the "charge"-4 superfluid and Fermi-liquid nematics and topologically ordered nonsuperfluid states, that generically intervene between the LO state and the conventional superfluid and the polarized Fermi-liquid at low and high imbalance, respectively. The fermionic sector of the LO gapless superconductor is also quite unique, exhibiting a Fermi surface of Bogoliubov quasiparticles associated with the Andreev band of states, localized on the array of the LO domain-walls.

Nonlinear smectic elasticity of a helical state in cholesterics and helimagnets

General symmetry arguments, dating back to de Gennes dictate that at scales longer than the pitch, the low-energy elasticity of a chiral nematic liquid crystal (cholesteric) and of a Dzyaloshinskii-Morya (DM) spiral state in a helimagnet with negligible crystal symmetry fields (e.g., MnSi, FeGe) is identical to that of a smectic liquid crystal, thereby inheriting its rich phenomenology. Starting with a chiral Frank free-energy (exchange and DM interactions of a helimagnet) we present a transparent derivation of the fully nonlinear Goldstone mode elasticity, which involves an analog of the Anderson-Higgs mechanism that locks the spiral orthonormal (director/magnetic moment) frame to the cholesteric (helical) layers. This shows explicitly the reduction of three orientational modes of a cholesteric down to a single phonon Goldstone mode that emerges on scales longer than the pitch. At a harmonic level our result reduces to that derived many years ago by Lubensky and collaborators.

Stability and distortions of liquid crystal order in a cell with a heterogeneous substrate

We study stability and distortions of liquid crystal nematic order in a cell with a random heterogeneous substrate. Modeling this system as a bulk xy model with quenched disorder confined to a surface, we find that nematic order is marginally unstable to such surface pinning. We compute the length scale beyond which nematic distortions become large and calculate orientational correlation functions using the functional renormalization-group and matching methods, finding universal logarithmic and double-logarithmic distortions in two and three dimensions, respectively. We extend these results to a finite-thickness liquid crystal cell with a second homogeneous substrate, detailing crossovers as a function of random pinning strength and cell thickness. We conclude with analysis of experimental signatures of these distortions in a conventional crossed-polarizer-analyzer light microscopy.

Imbalanced Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases

We present an overview of recent developments in species-imbalanced ("polarized") Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases. We summarize the current status of thermodynamics of these systems in terms of a phase diagram as a function of the Feshbach resonance detuning, polarization and temperature. We review instabilities of the s-wave superfluidity across the BEC-BCS crossover to phase separation, FFLO states, polarized molecular superfluidity and the normal state, driven by the species imbalance. We discuss different models and approximations of this system and compare their predictions to current experiments.

A note on a relation between ac Josephson effect and double-well BEC oscillations

In this brief note we comment on the relation between the ac Josephson effect and the coherent oscillations of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined to a double-well potential. The goal is to elucidate the extent to which the latter is a realization of the former. We detail the correspondence that emerges in the high occupation limit of the double-well potential, and particularly note the relation between the two oscillation frequencies.

Liquid crystal cells with "dirty" substrates

We explore liquid crystal order in a cell with a "dirty" substrate imposing a random surface pinning. Modeling such systems by a random-field xy-model with surface heterogeneity, we find that orientational order in the three-dimensional system is marginally unstable to such surface pinning. We compute the Larkin length scale, and the corresponding surface and bulk distortions. On longer scales we calculate correlation functions using the functional renormalization group and matching methods, finding a universal logarithmic and double-logarithmic roughness in two and three dimensions, respectively. For a finite thickness cell, we explore the interplay of homogeneous-heterogeneous substrate pair and detail crossovers as a function of disorder strength and cell thickness.

p-Wave Resonant Bose Gas: A Finite-Momentum Spinor Superfluid

We show that a degenerate gas of two-species bosonic atoms interacting through a p-wave Feshbach resonance (as realized in, e.g., a 85Rb-87Rb mixture) exhibits a finite-momentum atomic-molecular superfluid (AMSF), sandwiched by a molecular p-wave (orbital spinor) superfluid and by an s-wave atomic superfluid at large negative and positive detunings, respectively. The magnetic field can be used to tune the modulation wave vector of the AMSF state, as well as to drive quantum phase transitions in this rich system.

Quantum liquid crystals in imbalanced Fermi gas: fluctuations and fractional vortices in Larkin-Ovchinnikov states

We develop a low-energy model of a unidirectional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state. Because the underlying rotational and translational symmetries are broken spontaneously, this gapless superfluid is a smectic liquid crystal, that exhibits fluctuations that are qualitatively stronger than in a conventional superfluid, thus requiring a fully nonlinear description of its Goldstone modes. Consequently, at nonzero temperature the LO superfluid is an algebraic phase even in 3d. It exhibits half-integer vortex-dislocation defects, whose unbinding leads to transitions to a superfluid nematic and other phases. In 2d at nonzero temperature, the LO state is always unstable to a charge-4 nematic superfluid. We expect this superfluid liquid-crystal phenomenology to be realizable in imbalanced resonant Fermi gases trapped isotropically.

Conical soliton escape into a third dimension of a surface vortex

We present an exact three-dimensional solitonic solution to a sine-Gordon-type Euler-Lagrange equation, that describes a configuration of a three-dimensional vector field n constrained to a surface p-vortex, with a prescribed polar tilt angle on a planar substrate and escaping into the third dimension in the bulk. The solution is relevant to characterization of a schlieren texture in nematic liquid-crystal films with tangential (in-plane) substrate alignment. The solution is identical to a section of a point defect discovered many years ago by Saupe [Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst. 21, 211 (1973)], when latter is restricted to a surface.

Radio frequency spectroscopy of a strongly imbalanced Feshbach-resonant Fermi gas

A sufficiently large species imbalance (polarization) in a two-component Feshbach resonant Fermi gas is known to drive the system into its normal state. We show that the resulting strongly-interacting state is a conventional Fermi liquid, that is, however, strongly renormalized by pairing fluctuations. Using a controlled 1/N expansion, we calculate the properties of this state with a particular emphasis on the atomic spectral function, the momentum distribution functions displaying the Migdal discontinuity, and the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. We discuss the latter in the light of the recent experiments of Schunck et al. (cond-mat/0702066) on such a resonant Fermi gas, and show that the observations are consistent with a conventional, but strongly renormalized Fermi-liquid picture.
