Modular invariants and NIM-reps

Given a pivotal module category over a spherical fusion category, we introduce the encircling module, a module over the fusion algebra defined using the pivotal structure, and prove that it is isomorphic to the NIM-rep as a fusion algebra module. When applied to the $\mathcal{TM}$ realisation of the modular invariant partition function (arXiv:1911.09024), this yields an identification of the diagonal entries of the modular invariant with the NIM-rep multiplicities, providing a categorical generalisation of B\"ockenhauer, Evans and Kawahigashi's results (arXiv:math/9907149). We also show that for indecomposable module categories the dimension condition on $\mathcal{TM}$ required for modular invariance is automatically satisfied, and that $\mathcal{TM}$ recovers the full centre construction of Fjelstad, Fuchs, Runkel and Schweigert (arXiv:hep-th/0612306, arXiv:0807.3356).

Lorentzian polynomials and the independence sequences of graphs

We study the multivariate independence polynomials of graphs and the log-concavity of the coefficients of their univariate restrictions. Let $R_{W_4}$ be the operator defined on simple and undirected graphs which replaces each edge with a caterpillar of size $4$. We prove that all graphs in the image of $R_{W_4}$ are what we call pre-Lorentzian, that is, their multivariate independence polynomial becomes Lorentzian after appropriate manipulations. In particular, as pre-Lorentzian graphs have log-concave (and therefore unimodal) independence sequences, our result makes progress on a conjecture of Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erd\H{o}s which asks if the independence sequence of trees or forests is unimodal.

Partition identities from higher level crystals of $A_1^{(1)}$

We study perfect crystals for the standard modules of the affine Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ at all levels using the theory of multi-grounded partitions. We prove a family of partition identities which are reminiscent of the Andrews-Gordon identities and companions to the Meurman-Primc identities, but with simple difference conditions involving absolute values.

Graphical characterization of modular invariance

For a given modular tensor category we study representations of the corresponding tube category whose isomorphism classes are modular invariant matrices. In particular, we provide a characterization of these representations in terms of the annular graphical calculus of the tube category.

Extending the trace of a pivotal monoidal functor

We consider a pivotal monoidal functor whose domain is a modular tensor category (MTC). We show that the trace of such a functor naturally extends to a representation of the corresponding tube category. As irreducible representations of the tube category are indexed by pairs of simple objects in the underlying MTC, the simple multiplicities of this representation form a candidate modular invariant matrix. In general, this matrix will not be modular invariant, however it will always commute with the T-matrix. Furthermore, under certain additional conditions on the original functor, it is shown that the corresponding representation of the tube category is a haploid, symmetric, commutative Frobenius algebra. Such algebras are known to be connected to modular invariants, in particular a result of Kong and Runkel implies that the matrix of simple multiplicities commutes with the S-matrix if and only if the dimension of the algebra is equal to the dimension of the underlying MTC. Finally, we apply these techniques to certain pivotal monoidal functors arising from module categories over the Temperley-Lieb category and the associated MTC. This provides a novel explanation of the A-D-E pattern appearing in the classification of $ A_1^{(1)} $ modular invariants.

A graphical approach to the Drinfeld centre

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a spherical fusion category. The goal of this article is to present the tube category of $\mathcal{C}$, denoted $\mathcal{TC}$, as giving an alternative graphical perspective on the Drinfeld centre of $\mathcal{C}$, denoted $Z(\mathcal{C})$. We then exploit this perspective to obtain an alternative proof of the equivalence between $Z(\mathcal{C})$ and $\mathcal{C} \boxtimes \bar{\mathcal{C}}$ when $\mathcal{C}$ is modular. Sections 2-4 provide a survey of the required prerequisites; readers already familiar with graphical calculus in fusion categories should start at Section 5.

Decomposing the Tube Category

The tube category of a modular tensor category is a variant of the tube algebra, first introduced by Ocneanu. As a category, it can be decomposed in two different, but related, senses. Firstly, via the Yoneda embedding, the Hom spaces decompose into summands factoring though irreducible functors, in a manner analogous to decomposing an algebra as a sum of matrix algebras. We describe these summands. Secondly, under the Yoneda embedding, each object decomposes into irreducibles, which correspond to primitive idempotents in the category itself. We identify these idempotents. We make extensive use of diagram calculus in the description and proof of these decompositions.
