Non-linear effects in TXRF spectroscopy: Study on the influence of the sample amount

In this work we have studied the limitations of the TXRF spectroscopy in the upper limit of validity of the technique, when the analyzed specimen ceases to be a thin film. We have evaluated the non-linear effects in spectra obtained from samples made ad-hoc, which were acquired in a pre-established sequence of dilutions. So, the spectra were obtained in conditions of high, medium and low counts, thus the nonlinear effects were sequentially evaluated, as a function of the sample amount. According to the conclusions of this work, the Dead Time should be avoided since its effects are unpredictable and irreversible once the spectra are obtained.

A gamma spectrometry protocol for gold determination in big samples by neutron activation analysis, using a linac as a source of irradiation

This work presents a study on the fundamental aspects of a reliable gold determination in voluminous mineral samples by Neutron Activation Analysis, using a Linear Particle Accelerator as a source of irradiation and a single detector as a detection system. The report includes i) an evaluation of the detection efficiency of the system, particularly the evaluation of the geometric efficiency in samples with significant volumes (with approximate volumes from 20 to 30 cm3); ii) a few methods for the calculation of the gamma ray self attenuation in the sample; iii) some gold in-homogeneity tests in the sample; iv) several validation calculations obtained with the MCNP code - the complete system was modeled with this program. This group of results has produced a gamma-spectrometry protocol for this determination, in order to obtain accurately the gold concentration in mineral samples this study was required by a legal bureau to determine the gold abundance in a Patagonian small deposit. According to the high quality of the results obtained from the process of characterization of this method, it is concluded that this gold analysis would be obtained with an accuracy similar than the one provided by the usual NAA using a reactor, in small samples exactitude values around few %.

An ad-hoc modified Likelihood Function Applied to Optimization of Data Analysis in Atomic Spectroscopy

In this paper we propose an ad-hoc construction of the Likelihood Function, in order to develop a data analysis procedure, to be applied in atomic and nuclear spectral analysis. The classical Likelihood Function was modified taking into account the underlying statistics of the phenomena studied, by the inspection of the residues of the fitting, which should behave with specific statistical properties. This new formulation was analytically developed, but the sought parameter should be evaluated numerically, since it cannot be obtained as a function of each one of the independent variables. For this simple numerical evaluation, along with the acquired data, we also should process many sets of external data, with specific properties - This new data should be uncorrelated with the acquired signal. The developed statistical method was evaluated using computer simulated spectra. The numerical estimations of the calculated parameter applying this method, indicate an improvement over accuracy and precision, being one order of magnitude better than those produced by least squares approaches. We still have to evaluate the improvement produced by this method over Detection and Quantitation Limits, in TXRF spectral analysis.

A Pragmatic Smoothing Method for Improving the Quality of the Results in Atomic Spectroscopy

A new smoothing method for the improvement on the identification and quantification of spectral functions based on the previous knowledge of the signals that are expected to be quantified, is presented. These signals are used as weighted coefficients in the smoothing algorithm. This smoothing method was conceived to be applied in atomic and nuclear spectroscopies preferably to these techniques where net counts are proportional to acquisition time, such as particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and other X-ray fluorescence spectroscopic methods, etc. This algorithm, when properly applied, does not distort the form nor the intensity of the signal, so it is well suited for all kind of spectroscopic techniques. This method is extremely effective at reducing high-frequency noise in the signal much more efficient than a single rectangular smooth of the same width. As all of smoothing techniques, the proposed method improves the precision of the results, but in this case we found also a systematic improvement on the accuracy of the results. We still have to evaluate the improvement on the quality of the results when this method is applied over real experimental results. We expect better characterization of the net area quantification of the peaks, and smaller Detection and Quantification Limits. We have applied this method to signals that obey Poisson statistics, but with the same ideas and criteria, it could be applied to time series. In a general case, when this algorithm is applied over experimental results, also it would be required that the sought characteristic functions, required for this weighted smoothing method, should be obtained from a system with strong stability. If the sought signals are not perfectly clean, this method should be carefully applied

A new methodology which uses a mathematical procedure and pure substances for the determination of a TXRF spectrometer sensitivity curve

The usual method for determining the sensitivity curve of a TXRF spectrometer relies on calibration using a set of vendor-certified concentration values of reference calibration standards. These samples, which are certified by the provider, are costly and their quality cannot be verified. We propose the use of pure substances for calibration, along with a mathematical procedure, that assures a high precision and accuracy of the results. The method described herein is economically efficient and eliminates having to deal with some uncertainties related to the concentration of the standard used in the usual method, thereby improving the quality of the TXRF results.

Analysis of the benefits of designing and implementing a virtual didactic model of multiple choice exam and problem-solving heuristic report, for first year engineering students

Improvements in performance and approval obtained by first year engineering students from University of Concepcion, Chile, were studied, once a virtual didactic model of multiple-choice exam, was implemented. This virtual learning resource was implemented in the Web ARCO platform and allows training, by facing test models comparable in both time and difficulty to those that they will have to solve during the course. It also provides a feedback mechanism for both: 1) The students, since they can verify the level of their knowledge. Once they have finished the simulations, they can access a complete problem-solving heuristic report of each problem; 2) The teachers, since they can obtain information about the habits of the students in their strategies of preparation; and they also can diagnose the weaknesses of the students prior to the exam. This study indicates how this kind of preparation generates substantial improvements on the approval rates by allowing the students: 1) A more structured and oriented systematic study, and 2) To learn, from the feedback report of each problem that the information described in their exams should have, at each stage, a proper logical connection. Likewise, this study allows differentiating how the repetition in the use of the platform and the formality in the time invested indicate clear differences on the obtained performance.

A novel method based on cross correlation maximization, for pattern matching by means of a single parameter. Application to the human voice

This work develops a cross correlation maximization technique, based on statistical concepts, for pattern matching purposes in time series. The technique analytically quantifies the extent of similitude between a known signal within a group of data, by means of a single parameter. Specifically, the method was applied to voice recognition problem, by selecting samples from a given individual recordings of the 5 vowels, in Spanish. The frequency of acquisition of the data was 11.250 Hz. A certain distinctive interval was established from each vowel time series as a representative test function and it was compared both to itself and to the rest of the vowels by means of an algorithm, for a subsequent graphic illustration of the results. We conclude that for a minimum distinctive length, the method meets resemblance between every vowel with itself, and also an irrefutable difference with the rest of the vowels for an estimate length of 30 points (~2 10-3 s).
