Optimal Control of Left-Invariant Multi-Agent Systems with Asymmetric Formation Constraints

In this work, we study an optimal control problem for a multi-agent system modeled by an undirected formation graph with nodes describing the kinematics of each agent, given by a left-invariant control system on a Lie group. The agents should avoid collision between them in the workspace. Such a task is done by introducing some potential functions into the cost function for the optimal control problem, corresponding to fictitious forces, induced by the formation constraint among agents, that break the symmetry of the individual agents and the cost functions, and rendering the optimal control problem partially invariant by a Lie group of symmetries. Reduced necessary conditions for the existence of normal extremals are obtained using techniques of variational calculus on manifolds. As an application, we study an optimal control problem for multiple unicycles.

Symmetry Reduction in Optimal Control of Multiagent Systems on Lie Groups

We study the reduction of degrees of freedom for the equations that determine necessary optimality conditions for extrema in an optimal control problem for a multiagent system by exploiting the physical symmetries of agents, where the kinematics of each agent is given by a left-invariant control system. Reduced optimality conditions are obtained using techniques from variational calculus and Lagrangian mechanics. A Hamiltonian formalism is also studied, where the problem is explored through an application of Pontryagin's maximum principle for left-invariant systems, and the optimality conditions are obtained as integral curves of a reduced Hamiltonian vector field. We apply the results to an energy-minimum control problem for multiple unicycles.

Forced Variational Integrators for the Formation Control of Multi-Agent Systems

Formation control of autonomous agents can be seen as a physical system of individuals interacting with local potentials, and whose evolution can be described by a Lagrangian function. In this paper, we construct and implement forced variational integrators for the formation control of autonomous agents modeled by double integrators. In particular, we provide an accurate numerical integrator with a lower computational cost than traditional solutions. We find error estimations for the rate of the energy dissipated along with the agents' motion to achieve desired formations. Consequently, this permits to provide sufficient conditions on the simulation's time step for the convergence of discrete formation control systems such as the consensus problem in discrete systems. We present practical applications such as the rapid estimation of regions of attraction to desired shapes in distance-based formation control.

Forced variational integrator for distance-based shape control with flocking behavior of multi-agent systems

A multi-agent system designed to achieve distance-based shape control with flocking behavior can be seen as a mechanical system described by a Lagrangian function and subject to additional external forces. Forced variational integrators are given by the discretization of Lagrange-d'Alembert principle for systems subject to external forces, and have proved useful for numerical simulation studies of complex dynamical systems. We derive forced variational integrators that can be employed in the context of control algorithms for distance-based shape with velocity consensus. In particular, we provide an accurate numerical integrator with a lower computational cost than traditional solutions, while preserving the configuration space and symmetries. We also provide an explicit expression for the integration scheme in the case of an arbitrary number of agents with double integrator dynamics. For a numerical comparison of the performances, we use a planar formation consisting of three autonomous agents.

Symmetries and periodic orbits in simple hybrid Routhian systems

Symmetries are ubiquitous in a wide range of nonlinear systems. Particularly in systems whose dynamics are determined by a Lagrangian or Hamiltonian function. For hybrid systems which possess a continuous-time dynamics determined by a Lagrangian function, with a cyclic variable, the degrees of freedom for the corresponding hybrid Lagrangian system can be reduced by means of a method known as \textit{hybrid Routhian reduction}. In this paper we study sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic orbits in hybrid Routhian systems which also exhibit time-reversal symmetry. Likewise, we explore some stability aspects of such orbits through the characterization of the eigenvalues for the corresponding linearized Poincaré map. Finally, we apply the results to find periodic solutions in underactuated hybrid Routhian control systems.

Variational point-obstacle avoidance on Riemannian manifolds

In this letter we study variational obstacle avoidance problems on complete Riemannian manifolds. The problem consists of minimizing an energy functional depending on the velocity, covariant acceleration and a repulsive potential function used to avoid a static obstacle on the manifold, among a set of admissible curves. We derive the dynamical equations for extrema of the variational problem, in particular on compact connected Lie groups and Riemannian symmetric spaces. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed method.

On the observability of relative positions in left-invariant multi-agent control systems and its application to formation control

We consider the localization problem between agents while they run a formation control algorithm. These algorithms typically demand from the agents the information about their relative positions with respect to their neighbors. We assume that this information is not available. Therefore, the agents need to solve the observability problem of reconstructing their relative positions based on other measurements between them. We first model the relative kinematics between the agents as a left-invariant control system so that we can exploit its appealing properties to solve the observability problem. Then, as a particular application, we will focus on agents running a distance-based control algorithm where their relative positions are not accessible but the distances between them are.

On the Existence and Uniqueness of Poincaré Maps for Systems with Impulse Effects

The Poincaré map is widely used to study the qualitative behavior of dynamical systems. For instance, it can be used to describe the existence of periodic solutions. The Poincaré map for dynamical systems with impulse effects was introduced in the last decade and mainly employed to study the existence of limit cycles (periodic gaits) for the locomotion of bipedal robots. We investigate sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of Poincaré maps for dynamical systems with impulse effects evolving on a differentiable manifold. We apply the results to show the existence and uniqueness of Poincaré maps for systems with multiple domains.

Time-minimum control of quantum purity for 2-level Lindblad equations

We study time-minimum optimal control for a class of quantum two-dimensional dissipative systems whose dynamics are governed by the Lindblad equation and where control inputs acts only in the Hamiltonian. The dynamics of the control system are analyzed as a bi-linear control system on the Bloch ball after a decoupling of such dynamics into intra- and inter-unitary orbits. The (singular) control problem consists of finding a trajectory of the state variables solving a radial equation in the minimum amount of time, starting at the completely mixed state and ending at the state with the maximum achievable purity. The boundary value problem determined by the time-minimum singular optimal control problem is studied numerically. If controls are unbounded, simulations show that multiple local minimal solutions might exist. To find the unique globally minimal solution, we must repeat the algorithm for various initial conditions and find the best solution out of all of the candidates. If controls are bounded, optimal controls are given by bang-bang controls using the Pontryagin minimum principle. Using a switching map we construct optimal solutions consisting of singular arcs. If controls are bounded, the analysis of our model also implies classical analysis done previously for this problem.

Optimal Trajectory Tracking of Nonholonomic Mechanical Systems: a geometric approach

We study the tracking of a trajectory for a nonholonomic system by recasting the problem as an optimal control problem. The cost function is chosen to minimize the error in positions and velocities between the trajectory of a nonholonomic system and the desired reference trajectory evolving on the distribution which defines the nonholonomic constraints. We prepose a geometric framework since it describes the class of nonlinear systems under study in a coordinate-free framework. Necessary conditions for the existence of extrema are determined by the Pontryagin Minimum Principle. A nonholonomic fully actuated particle is used as a benchmark example to show how the proposed method is applied.

Dynamic interpolation for obstacle avoidance on Riemannian manifolds

This work is devoted to studying dynamic interpolation for obstacle avoidance. This is a problem that consists of minimizing a suitable energy functional among a set of admissible curves subject to some interpolation conditions. The given energy functional depends on velocity, covariant acceleration and on artificial potential functions used for avoiding obstacles. We derive first-order necessary conditions for optimality in the proposed problem; that is, given interpolation and boundary conditions we find the set of differential equations describing the evolution of a curve that satisfies the prescribed boundary values, interpolates the given points and is an extremal for the energy functional. We study the problem in different settings including a general one on a Riemannian manifold and a more specific one on a Lie group endowed with a left-invariant metric. We also consider a sub-Riemannian problem. We illustrate the results with examples of rigid bodies, both planar and spatial, and underactuated vehicles including a unicycle and an underactuated unmanned vehicle.

The variational discretization of the constrained higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré equations

In this paper we investigate a variational discretization for the class of mechanical systems in presence of symmetries described by the action of a Lie group which reduces the phase space to a (non-trivial) principal bundle. By introducing a discrete connection we are able to obtain the discrete constrained higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré equations. These equations describe the dynamics of a constrained Lagrangian system when the Lagrangian function and the constraints depend on higher-order derivatives such as the acceleration, jerk or jounces. The equations, under some mild regularity conditions, determine a well defined (local) flow which can be used to define a numerical scheme to integrate the constrained higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré equations. Optimal control problems for underactuated mechanical systems can be viewed as higher-order constrained variational problems. We study how a variational discretization can be used in the construction of variational integrators for optimal control of underactuated mechanical systems where control inputs act soley on the base manifold of a principal bundle (the shape space). Examples include the energy minimum control of an electron in a magnetic field and two coupled rigid bodies attached at a common center of mass.

Variational collision avoidance problems on Riemannian manifolds

In this article we introduce a variational approach to collision avoidance of multiple agents evolving on a Riemannian manifold and derive necessary conditions for extremals. The problem consists of finding non-intersecting trajectories of a given number of agents, among a set of admissible curves, to reach a specified configuration, based on minimizing an energy functional that depends on the velocity, covariant acceleration and an artificial potential function used to prevent collision among the agents. The results are validated through numerical experiments on the manifolds $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ and $S^2$.

Lagrangian Lie subalgebroids generating dynamics for second-order mechanical systems on Lie algebroids

The study of mechanical systems on Lie algebroids permits an understanding of the dynamics described by a Lagrangian or Hamiltonian function for a wide range of mechanical systems in a unified framework. Systems defined in tangent bundles, Lie algebras, principal bundles, reduced systems and constrained are included in such description. In this paper, we investigate how to derive the dynamics associated with a Lagrangian system defined on the set of admissible elements of a given Lie algebroid using Tulczyjew's triple on Lie algebroids and constructing a Lagrangian Lie subalgebroid of a symplectic Lie algebroid, by building on the geometric formalism for mechanics on Lie algebroids developed by M. de León, J.C. Marrero and E. Martínez on "Lagrangian submanifolds and dynamics on Lie algebroids".

Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem for Hybrid Systems

The Poincaré-Bendixson theorem plays an important role in the study of the qualitative behavior of dynamical systems on the plane; it describes the structure of limit sets in such systems. We prove a version of the Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem for two dimensional hybrid dynamical systems and describe a method for computing the derivative of the Poincaré return map, a useful object for the stability analysis of hybrid systems. We also prove a Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem for a class of one dimensional hybrid dynamical systems.

Variational obstacle avoidance problem on Riemannian manifolds

We introduce variational obstacle avoidance problems on Riemannian manifolds and derive necessary conditions for the existence of their normal extremals. The problem consists of minimizing an energy functional depending on the velocity and covariant acceleration, among a set of admissible curves, and also depending on a navigation function used to avoid an obstacle on the workspace, a Riemannian manifold. We study two different scenarios, a general one on a Riemannian manifold and, a sub-Riemannian problem. By introducing a left-invariant metric on a Lie group, we also study the variational obstacle avoidance problem on a Lie group. We apply the results to the obstacle avoidance problem of a planar rigid body and an unicycle.

Optimal Control of Quantum Purity for $n=2$ Systems

The objective of this work is to study time-minimum and energy-minimum global optimal control for dissipative open quantum systems whose dynamics is governed by the Lindblad equation. The controls appear only in the Hamiltonian. Using recent results regarding the decoupling of such dissipative dynamics into intra- and inter-unitary orbits, we transform the control system into a bi-linear control system on the Bloch ball (the unitary sphere together with its interior). We then design a numerical algorithm to construct an optimal path to achieve a desired point given initial states close to the origin (the singular point) of the Bloch ball. This is done both for the minimum-time and minimum -energy control problems.

A variational-geometric approach for the optimal control of nonholonomic systems

Necessary conditions for existence of normal extremals in optimal control of systems subject to nonholonomic constraints are derived as solutions of a constrained second order variational problems. In this work, a geometric interpretation of the derivation is studied from the theory of Lie algebroids. We employ such a framework to describe the problem into a unifying formalism for normal extremals in optimal control of nonholonomic systems and including situations that have not been considered before in the literature from this perspective. We show that necessary conditions for existence of extremals in the optimal control problem can be also determined by a Hamiltonian system on the cotangent bundle of a skew-symmetric algebroid.
