Ricci-inverse gravity: a novel alternative gravity, its flaws, and how to cure them

We introduce a novel theory of gravity based on the inverse of the Ricci tensor, that we call the anticurvature tensor. We derive the general equations of motion for any Lagrangian function of the curvature and anticurvature scalars. We then demonstrate a no-go theorem: no Lagrangian that contains terms linear in any positive or negative power of the anticurvature scalar can drive an evolution from deceleration to acceleration, as required by observations. This effectively rules out many realizations of this theory, as we illustrate in detail in a particular case. Finally, we speculate on how to circumvent the no-go theorem.

An Introduction to Particle Dark Matter

We review the features of Dark Matter as a particle, presenting some old and new instructive models, and looking for their physical implications in the early universe and in the process of structure formation. We also present a schematic of Dark Matter searches and introduce the most promising candidates to the role of Dark Matter particle.

Late-times asymptotic equation of state for a class of nonlocal theories of gravity

We investigate the behavior of the asymptotic late-times effective equation of state for a class of nonlocal theories of gravity. These theories modify the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian introducing terms containing negative powers of the d'Alembert operator acting on the Ricci scalar. We find that imposing vanishing initial conditions for the nonlocal content during the radiation-dominated epoch implies the same asymptotic late-times behavior for most of these models. In terms of the effective equation of state of the universe, we find that asymptotically $ω_{ \rm eff} \rightarrow -1$, approaching the value given by a cosmological constant. On the other hand, unlike in the case of $Λ$CDM, the Hubble factor is a monotonic growing function that diverges asymptotically. We argue that this behavior is not a coincidence and discuss under which conditions this is to be expected in these nonlocal models.

Cosmology and Newtonian limit in a model of gravity with nonlocally interacting metrics

We investigate the features of the cosmological expansion history described by a recent model of gravity characterised by two nonlocally interacting metrics. We perform a detailed analysis of the dynamical system formed by the field equations and we find no stable critical points at finite and infinite distance. Nonetheless, we show that even if the universe does not evolve towards a de Sitter attractor, the effective equation of state parameter $ω_{\rm eff}$ always tends to $-1$, independently from the value of the free parameter $m^2$, which characterises the nonlocality of the theory. We also address the behaviour of gravity on Solar System scales and the growth of small cosmological fluctuations on small scales, in the quasi-static approximation. We find a post-Newtonian $γ$ parameter, a slip parameter and an effective, normalised gravitational coupling different from unity. These differences all depend on $m^2$ and are negligible if one consider the cosmological solution by which $m^2 \sim H_0^2$.

Redshift drift of gravitational lensing

We investigate the effect of the redshift drift in strong gravitational lensing. The redshift drift produces a time variation of $i)$ the apparent position of a lensed source and $ii)$ the time delay among incoming signals from different images. We dub these effects as angular drift and time delay drift, respectively, and analyze their relevance in cosmology.

Hořava-Lifshitz gravity inspired Bianchi-II cosmology and the mixmaster universe

We study different aspects of the Hořava-Lifshitz inspired Bianchi-II cosmology and its relations with the mixmaster universe model. First, we present exact solutions for a toy model, where only the cubic in spatial curvature terms are present in the action; then we briefly discuss some exotic singularities, which can appear in this toy model. We study also the toy model where only the quadratic in spatial curvature terms are present in the action. We establish relations between our results and those obtained by using the Hamiltonian formalism. Finally, we apply the results obtained by studying Bianchi-II cosmology to describe the evolution of the mixmaster universe in terms of the Belinsky-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz formalism. Generally, our analysis gives some arguments in favour of the existence of the oscillatory approach to the singularity in a universe governed by the Hořava-Lifshitz type gravity.
